That's right -- it's official! The Cindy Lee Berryhill / Elizabeth Hummel Living Room Tour stops right HERE next month! Tuesday, August 5, 1997 at our house in Greenfield, IN, the renowned duo from San Diego will perform a one-evening acoustic concert in our living room; attendance is open to all! After a successful couple of private appearances already in Toledo and Boston, you won't want to miss this one. I've already sent in my deposit, so all I have to do now is enlist 20 or more people to enjoy the concert. I wish I could afford to throw a free party like Jared has announced, but alas -- with two kids in school and a newly remodelled basement, I need to at least recoup enough money to make sure the the ladies have their expenses paid. That being said, I guarantee they won't lose money on the stop; but any profit will go to them, not to me. :-) So I'm asking a $10 donation from each attendee, and I would really really like to have everyone confirm in advance if at all possible, to avoid disappointment. We'll probably have space for 25 people in our living room, and I don't want a SRO crowd because I want everyone to enjoy the show instead of being crushed like a sardine. :-) I'd like everyone who seriously plans to attend, to let me know before July 29. If we're short, that will give me a chance to entice some more people to attend. :-) I want to emphasize that there is limited seating, so if you're really serious about attending, let me know ASAP. I won't insist on advance payment, but it will definitely guarantee you a good seat. :-) Reports from their last tour indicate that this is an event not to be missed. Don't pass up a chance to see these talented performers before their star rises like Jewel's! Email me for personalized directions to the concert. There will be limited crash space available to EDAs who need to spend the night, first come first served. We'll do what we can to help everyone out. I thought I'd give you all my top 10 list.. along with books i'm about to read too that I have here.. 1. J.C. Herz's "Surfing the Internet" - it's not an educational book, it's just about this girl's journeys through the internet, very witty, and incredibly funny. You can even find some of the people mentioned in here on irc 2. Douglas Coupland's "Shampoo Planet" - It's just a little story about this guy Tyler Johnson's life in Washington or wherever he lives, I kinda forgot But I guess the title is derived from his favorite store In the run-down strip mall in his town - Shampoo Planet The book starts off with Tyler's mother waking up to the word "DIVORCE" written on her forehead in a felt-tip pen in mirror writing. Yeeowch.. Quote from the main char? "Hair is your document - What's on your head says what's in your head" 3. Douglas Coupland's "Microserfs" - Life at Microsoft... it's another little go-along tale like "Shampoo Planet" except one of the roomies has an ingenious idea, get's called in by Bill (gates) and convinces the rest of the group to give up their careers in coding at Microsoft to go work with him. 4. Douglas Coupland's "Polaroids from the Dead" - More or less a Grateful Dead tribute - several sided stories from people, just living and going to different revivals and stuff - very neat 5. Douglas Coupland's "Life After God" - Just a life of this guy who has gone everywhere, there's plenty of little stories that go off on a tangent, but it's very good nonetheless - Definitely toilet reading 6. Douglas Coupland's "Generation X" - I bought this one a month or so ago for my birthday and I've gotten half into it and I love it to death. It's so perfect for the 20-something generation and focuses a lot on the discussions of existence and lots about just a lot of weird stuff that most people would say "Does anyone care?" to. All these books by Douglas Coupland you would definitely need to be in a thinking mood to read. I particularly like Claire's story in this book. (They all tell each other stories, it's really cool). Nonetheless, this is a great book. 7. Mary Higgins Clark's "Loves Music, Loves to Dance" - This was a really good mystery/suspense novel, even though I'm not too into those. What made it even better was the fact that the murders in the book were held at a remote part of Bridgewater, NJ - which is the home of my favorite hangout on Fridays - The Bridgewater Commons, AKA The Mall. It's basically just a guy who's one of those Personal Ads killers. Really great stuff. 8. ??'s "Jersey Diners" - I know, it's not really a novel, but it is in a way. It goes into the daily lives of all these waitresses and Diner owners and the history of diners. Did you know that New Jersey has the most diners in the world? It's funny since diners are my favorite places to be. They're so.. so.. Marge (read "Shampoo Planet") 9. Anne Rice's "Servant of the Bones" - What can I say? Devilish, chaotic.. yummy... 10. Paul Auster's "Leviathan" - I didn't read this yet but I didn't have any other books to put on here that I especially liked. I'm going to read this one though.. I hear this guy Is a way kick-butt author. So lemme know what books you all like or whatever... especially if you like Douglas Coupland (who I damn near worship) ttyl - -linda :) _\|/_ o o ...ooo....(_)....ooo..................................................... | | | | Linda E. I know this has nothing to do with Jewel, but I figured that you were the largest audience to my troubles, and since you were angels, you would at least respond honestly. Here's my problem : I have the biggest crush on a girl...she is going to be a sophomore but is old for her grade (16). I go to her swimming club, and I see her occasionally. I have this thing where if I like somebody, I tend to ignore them. One time, after getting out of the pool, I passed by her and we made eye contact, but not one word escaped and I walked by. I'm also incredibly shy around her...it's not completely like me to be shy around girls, but around her, I lose all rationale. Two times, I walked into the swim center and she said 'hi' really friendly-like...and then I said hi back, but not like I normally do...I said it like I had to go to the bathroom or something...one time I even called her and I intended to have a nice conversation, but instead, my voice trembled and I was soaked in sweat after I hung up from asking her what the schedule was for Saturday practice. Anyhow, I wouldn't be writing this if I didn't believe that she is somewhat attracted to me...it looks like the first thing we both do when we both get there is find where we are...I've asked one of my friends who has a sister that is best friends with this girl to see if she is dating anyone right now...I have yet to hear from him and my dilemma is this : should I ask her out if she isn't and if she says yes, then what am I going to do (because I know I'll just break down in front of her)? Honestly, I don't think rejection would hurt me, but more help me because I've got this vanity problem...Another thing, how would it look if there was this asian guy going out with this white girl? I live in a nice suburb of Los Angeles and so does she...really close. Oh, and just as a sideline, she is one of the prettiest girls at our school, and she looks like Brooke Shields...I sincerely believe that I will kill myself in the future when I turn on the tube at 30 years old and see her as the star of some hit show...what should I do????? Im not trying to be perverted but my family is big into fashion and fashion lines and those Chiffon Dresses are so beautiful and the layering of lingerie and slips can only be done by artists. Plus they are really expensive to make cause the material costs alot and the material is really soft and comfortable. Look at Jewel in the Details mag and look at how beautiful she and the dress are. The layering and red splashes on different parts of the dress!!!! She is both sensitive yet sexy. She looked very happy and radient in that dress. I think she made that right choice for the dress cause she has said before it made her feel angelic and happy!! You actually have to send those in a padded envelope. (ya know, those ones with the bubbles in 'em). And if you did have to use those, the postage would be 55 or 78 cents instead of 32 cents. Plus, it would be safer if the guitar picks were sent in a bubble envelope as they have less chance of breakage. so, anyway, you might consider using a bubble envelope with 55 cents postage. It costs a little more, but it might be worth it. anyway, if anybody can confirm this or otherwise...post it! thanks everybody. .-Kori _______________________________________________________ Get Private Web-Based Email Free http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Jul 1997 02:27:39 -0400 From: Clover Subject: Re: my first >I dont even have to say anything about Gwen having more class!! =) Wot's so wrong with Gwen? If I were you, I would just wing it and ask her out, I mean what harm can be done? I've gone out with a cacausian (spelling?) girl before, and trust me, she wouldn't care if you were asian, ugly, or whatever deficiencies you may have. Man your off to college too! (They then also bring complaints to the list manager...now me) Yes, we've had some ridiculous threads lately that were not 'shut down' (toilet paper thread come to mind?), but it's hard to judge in advance what will turn into a thread. (That one I did not expect to take off and have a life of it's own) Besides, JC threads [Jewel-Content] are of course good, but they seem to be few and far between. :\ Now I know a book or movie review won't usually cause any flame war problems, but they DO have the potential to go on & on as everyone has favorite books or movies to post about. With 1300+ people on the Jewel & Jewel-digest lists, it could and likely will get out of hand. (we've already had a handful or two of book & movie reviews in the last few days) So, please consider it official list policy to NOT post book or movie reviews, unless of course they (movies) have Jewel songs or Jewel stuff in them Even then please try to limit it to Jewel commentary and/or a *short* recommendation or not (Recommendations are another thing, it's the longer reviews that are not desired) I know you want to share what you like with your EDA friends, but there is a limit here, as we do have 1300+ folk and many are here for more of the topical stuff, so we have to consider their desires too. (It's for that very reason we invented the NJC acronym....if your post is primarity Non-Jewel Content, please lead off your subject with "NJC") If anyone differs with this policy, please write me privately :) Your fellow EDA, Mike - list manager :) **** The Jewel Mailing List Netiquette & New Member Guide at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Bearsville97/JewelStock Reunion/EDA Gathering site at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv97/bv97.htm EDA Guitar Picks Online at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/edapicks.htm Patty Griffin Tour Dates & more at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/patttour.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com **** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 1997 09:30:03 -0400 (EDT) From: GraywolfLA@aol.com Subject: Fwd: LRT--the press release (NJC) Hi all: I want to forward this message to you from Paul Williams, an "honorary" EDA who also is Cindy lee Berryhill's boyfriend and who conceived the "Livingroom Tour" after the hugely successful EDA Cafe in Boston: (Open your browser to maximum width; the lines are long.) Bring the people to the music." Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel, two singer-songwriters based in San Diego, California, are embarking on a new kind of musical tour in the northeastern U.S.A. in early August 1997, thanks to the Internet and the enthusiastic and supportive fans of their singer-songwriter friend Jewel Kilcher. A group of 1000 Jewel fans who call themselves the EDAs (Everyday Angels) send personal messages to each other daily on an Internet "mailing list" that differs from most music discussion groups on the Internet in the participants' idealism, their friendliness towards each other (getting together in person on occasions other than Jewel performances) and their interest in (and growing enthusiasm for) other musicians from the "scene" (or anyway city) where Jewel found her muse, such as Berryhill, Hummel, Steve Poltz of the Rugburns (co-author of Jewel's huge hit "You Were Meant for Me") and others. Berryhill and Hummel found themselves with a few extra days in Boston last April when a Berryhill gig in Albany was rescheduled at the last minute. They contacted an EDA friend in Los Angeles who, with 24 hours notice, arranged a party at a private home in Boston via the Internet that brought together 20 EDAs from all over New England. The ladies sang and played for four hours and the audience responded so enthusiastically that soon the Internet was ringing with requests from around the U.S. for another "EDA Cafe." Berryhill and Hummel responded by offering to play a "Living Room Tour" of EDA house parties if the hosts would cover travel expenses by charging $10. per attendee and if logistical issues of travel distance and time could be worked out. So, at a time when the live music business in the U.S. is having great difficulty getting people out of their homes to attend big-name concert tours, a new form of musical D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) is being pioneered by Berryhill and Hummel, who will play Old Bridge NJ, Lancaster PA, Cincinnati, Greenfield IN, South Bend IN (the only non-EDA living room show, organized by the father of a young woman who saw Berryhill perform on a visit to San Diego), Toledo, Cape Cod, Boston and Long Island between Aug. 1 and Aug. 11. Some would-be EDA hosts were disappointed when their cities couldn't be fit into the low-budget itinerary, but plans are already being made for future Living Room Tours, and Berryhill and Hummel have promised to play for what seems likely to become a large EDA gathering on a Canadian island between Vancouver and Seattle, made possible by Berryhill's scheduled appearance a few days later at Seattle's annual Bumbershoot Festival. Elizabeth Hummel is a well-established performer in San Diego clubs and coffee houses whose first album, The Caldron, was released in 1995. Cindy Lee Berryhill has released four albums, including 1996's Straight Outta Marysville; England's Record Collector magazine says she is "as unconventional and inspired as any rock performer in America...tomorrow's cult artist today." Jewel Kilcher has sold more than three million copies of her first album, Pieces of You. The EDAs offer hope that Internet communities are not limited to sitting in front of computer screens. I just wanted to reiterate a few things that have been said many times on this list, and have been proven to be helpful for posters and readers alike. First, before you post something to the list realize that there are over 1,000 people on this list and that your message will go to ALL of them. Ask yourself this question: If what you are about to send was coming from someone else known or not, would you want to read it? If not, chances are they won't want to read it either. What I mean is don't post something unless you are pretty sure that at least some of the people on this list will want to read it. Another thing to remember is when to post to EVERYONE on the list and when to respond PRIVATELY. The list is like a giant classroom. A 1400 person classroom. Posting to the list is the same thing as getting up in front of the entire class and saying something. If you think something is important, post it, but if you are replying to someone particular on something that doesn't interest the entire list please e-mail that person only. There is nothing worse than sitting down to your computer and reading 50 posts that should have been made privately. Would you get up in front of 1400 people just to say "me too"? One other tip is for everyone to try to put as much as they can into one post. Rather than post five one line messages, post one message that includes each of those one liners. Also make sure anytime you are posting that you refer to what your post is in response to, but please _don't_ repost a whole four page post just to add 2 lines at the bottom. For example, suppose I made a post about cheese but in the last line I included a song lyric. You were reading my post and reached the lyric and wanted to know who the song was by. Just quote the song lyric rather than quoting my whole message or not quoting any of my message. I think these are some things that most people who have been on this list for awhile will agree make things easier on everyone. I hope everyone that has come on to the list recently likes it here. We are really one of the most amazing places in the computer/telephone world. Talk to you soon. Also, yesterday morning on Good Morning America there was a brief segment on LF in which Jewel was interviewed and a tiny bit of her performance was shown. For anyone very familiar with Jewel's newer material , you may find this very funny. There are a few reviews flying around that call "Fragile Flame" "Fat Boy.' It's understandable given that the song titles are not yet known to media folks , but it's ever so funny:) Hugs and Halos~~Hil ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 1997 09:49:35 -0500 From: gosiam@juno.com (Margaret E Milsztajn) Subject: Re:: my first Ok Angelz, I personally LOVE Jewel AND Gwen. They both have their own unique style and taste! That is just one of the many reasons why I love them both so much. I mean sure they dress differently but they have characteristics that are alike such as: They both don't care what people think of them, they don't pretend or lie about anything...... And they both like each other! I'm serious, there was an interview Gwen once and they asked her ' What do you think of all ht eother female artists such as: Fiona Apple, JEWEL, Sheryl Crow etc? You actually have to send those in a The issue for the post office is parcel disintegration. If you're talking about bottle-caps, they have a tendency to tear right through the paper, and people blame the post office for this. There's a slight chance of a pick slicing open an edge on the envelope, but a little scotch tape around the edges goes a long way to reducing that likelihood. (I've done this at the post office for some dogtags I was mailing someone, in full view of the postal worker, so it's definitely considered acceptable.) Or, as already suggested, fold the picks into a small piece of paper inside, this will "trap" the picks, so they can't tear the envelope. Fellow angels, Hi there everyone! :o) The past few weeks a few of you have spoken about dreams you had that included Jewel. Well, I'm here to riddle the list with another such post :o) The setting was my old boarding school in the huge theatre building, Jewel was performing a concert for the local Hersheyites. The theatre was practically empty. I was sitting in the very front row, off to the left. I watched her performance in awe :o) And when it was over everyone just sorta walked out... I, being the infatuated Jewel fan I am, walked up on stage and helped her with her guitars (I held Big Blue!) and equipment. We talked about her performance and what we each thought about it. She critiqued herself in depth and description. We headed out of the theatre as if we were close friends, having a very nice conversation. That's when I remembered to tell her I was an EDA. And she looks at me with this playful look and says "Oh REally!?!" and does her patented wiggly voiced "Oh My God!" :o) We laugh a little and walk around the rotunda where there is some boy scout chess competition going on. Jewel walks up to them and says to me, "I wish I knew how to play." One of the boys looks up and says "It's Jewel!" but the others give a quizzical stare and continue their deep concentration. Jewel and I continue to walk around, and continue our friendlike conversation (she was really fun in my dream) and she says "This is a really nice place, I'd like to live here," and I, actually experienced on the school, say, "NO, you wouldn't!" At about this time we head out to the front of the building where there is a (Honda Accord-like) car. We walk upto the car and she rounds it and opens the driver side door. She says, "Bibi isn't with me today, so I can take you were you want..." but I say it's ok, I can walk home. She says it was nice talking with me and that she hoped to see me again soon, I say the same, she enters the car and drives away. And as she drove away, I suddenly realize something and yell out "What about your equipment!?!" but she was already to far down the road to hear. :o) And that was it. Wow my first Jewel dream... I hope there are more :o) The Quiet Angel Abel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Jul 1997 11:40:27 +0000 From: sscfl@mail.jax.bellsouth.net Subject: Spokane, WA review of George, WA Lilith Fair 97/07/07 Spokesman-Review; All-woman concert proves it's a winner; Winda Benedetti The concert was more acoustic-based introspection than it was rock and roll frenzy. And although the music simmered often, only rarely did it heat to a full boil. But if the first all-woman music festival known as Lilith Fair didn't rock out the way its male counterparts do, well, that's OK. It was never intended to. Judging from the Lilith Fair's first showing, however, it did achieve exactly what its founder wanted. It proved to the music industry that the public will pay to hear one superb musician after another -- even if they are all girls. Lilith Fair was created by singer Sarah McLachlan -- known for folk-laden tunes like ``Possession'' and ``Good Enough'' -- after she observed the masculinity of Lollapalooza-like festival lineups. And for eight hours Saturday in front of a capacity crowd, the Gorge became a showbox for some of the prime female voices in the music business -- Jewel, McLachlan and Tracy Chapman among them. Theirs were earnest voices, unafraid to wrap their emotions about them like a sarong. They sang about poverty and child abuse, about domestic violence and divorce. Jewel told the audience about a friend who committed suicide because he was fat and thought no one would love him. For all its serious mindedness, the concert also had the feel of a joyously-overgrown slumber party. With women sitting cross-legged in the grass at her feet, McLachlan started off the event mid-afternoon with an intimate acoustic set on a small side stage. Nearby a skin care company blanketed the crowd with samples of ``Pore Perfect,'' an adhesive strip that plucks blackheads from clogged nose flesh. At The Love Tent, vendors hawked flowing cotton dresses. A shoe manufacturer was on hand with the latest in fashionable footwear. The second stage performers offered up the heaviest musical dose while combating clipping winds and a sound system that made it seem as though they sang through jello. Leah Andreone's nimble voice pierced with aching conviction on ``It's Alright, It's OK'' and a cover of Nirvana's ``Come As You Are.'' On the main stage, Suzanne Vega opened with favorites like ``Luka'' and ``Tom's Diner,'' while Paula Cole thumped the audience with rousing versions of ``Tiger'' and ``Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?'' Jewel's warbly vocal gymnastics were right on with their clarity and near childlike purity in songs like ``Who Will Save Your Soul.'' Although McLachlan deserves heaps of praise for being forward thinking enough to put together such a festival, the headlining spot should have gone to Tracy Chapman. Chapman's fantastically energetic set had the crowd on its feet with blues-licked songs like ``Give Me One Reason.'' She was cheered back on for an encore. Although dulcetly executed, McLachlan's closing set ended the evening on a mellow note. Still, the crowd was polite enough to cheer her on for an encore as well. In truth, the main stage was heavy on heart-felt folk style rock to a flaw. Jewel hit it on the head when, upon picking up a new instrument, she joked, ``Oh God, I have an electric guitar in my hands.'' And although the festival was created to celebrate women in music, all of the main acts were backed by all-male bands -- except McLachlan who had one female vocalist. It would have been nice to see an all-woman band in the lineup. L7 or Babes in Toyland -- although out of place with their aggressive anger-driven racket -- would have been a welcome change of pace. Of course, no matter what headway McLachlan and crew make for womankind with Lilith Fair, it seems some things will never change: Visits to the portable restrooms found that the men still forgot to put the toilet seats down. - -30- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #538 ***************************
