All the shows are either sold out or close to it, making it the most successful of the summer festivals so far.=20 =A0 Close to 20,000 people -- the woman/man ratio in the audience was about 60/40 and the crowd was as diverse as I've seen at any festival -- flocked to the event celebrating female performers.=20 =A0 It was mellow in that apart from standout sets by lively up-and-comer Paula Cole and folk-rocker Tracy Chapman on the main stage, which overlooked the magnificent Columbia River Gorge and the surrounding hills, the event was in serious need of some female rockers.=20 =A0 And we all know they're out there. In fact, Sheryl Crow was rumored to be making a surprise appearance Saturday night but never showed. (Thankfully the Toronto dates include Indigo Girls and Meredith Brooks on the rotating lineup.)=20 =A0 "We did ask some harder edged artists," McLachlan said at a news conference just before the music got under way.=20 =A0 "Some of them had been on the road for a long time and were sick of touring, which I can certainly respect. Others were in the studios and others just looked at it and went, 'Well, that's not my scene.' We got about 90% of the people we asked for."=20 =A0 When asked if The Spice Girls were on her wish list, McLachlan joked: "We didn't think we'd get them. But we're all Spice Girls up here anyway."=20 =A0 As it was, folk was definitely the order of the day at The Gorge, with the mainstage lineup rounded out by Suzanne Vega, Jewel and, of course,= McLachlan.=20 =A0 One notable exception was jazz singer Cassandra Wilson, who knocked everyone out with her half-hour, smooth-as-they-come set on the smaller stage.=20 =A0 Vega said she was honored to be "the first act on the first night of the first Lilith Fair."=20 =A0 Cole echoed those sentiments. "I'm really proud that Lilith Fair exists today. I think it's a symbol of hope."=20 =A0 Jewel, as lovely as she is to look at, really didn't need to shove it down our throats. Photographers jumped all over each other to shoot her as she performed in a clingy, sheer, red cocktail dress and black, high-heeled sandals. As the sun set behind her not much was left to the imagination.=20 =A0 Interestingly, Jewel had earlier told the news conference: "I think women have been pretty dependent on their sex to sell themselves, generally in a lot of businesses, and something I've really respected from a lot of the women here is that they're very balanced in their sexuality." Oh, well.=20 =A0 McLachlan treated a small audience to an acoustic set on the smaller stage first -- "I just want to say I'm glad there's so many men out there," she commented -- before her headline performance four and a half hours after= Vega.=20 =A0 Unfortunately the crowd, who spent a lot of the hot day either eating, standing in long bathroom lineups or shopping at the various stands (business was slow at the Love Tent while Seattle-based magazine RockGrl was selling out of its Lilith Fair issue), was weary by the time she appeared.= =20 =A0 Wearing a long, flowing black gown and what appeared to be a gold, sequined top in the design of a breastplate, McLachlan was nonetheless a perfect ending to the long day as her ethereal voice rang out into the starry night.= =20 =A0 "I've been looking forward to this for a really long time," McLachlan said earlier. "It's a beautiful day and I'm surrounded by beautiful women. Hell, what could be better."=20 =A0 For a lot of people, it seems, not much.=20 =A0 SUN RATING 3 OUT OF 5=20 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jul 1997 08:25:53 -0700 From: smithr@agcs.com (Roger Smith) Subject: Re: I Gots A Question Love is just another 4 letter word... :P~~~ On Jul 6, 5:10pm, Karen Miller wrote: > Subject: RE: I Gots A Question > i am in love right now his name is luis he is so sweet but he lives far away so am i really in love? > > rose > > ---------- > From: That Little Voice Inside Your Head[SMTP:layaway@earthlink.net] > Sent: Sunday, July 06, 1997 1:14 PM > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: NJC: I Gots A Question > > > > > > How Many Of You Angels Have Ever Been In Love, Like Trully In Love With > Someone, I've Been Thinking A Lot Lately, And I've Noticed Whenever I Give > A Lot Of Love To Someone, They Go To Someone Else, I Mean It's Happened A > Lot, And It's Kinda Sad, But I Wanna Know About You Angels, How Many Of You > Have Been In Love, Has Their Ever Been Like A Puppy Or A Stuffed Animal > That You Just Loved And It Was Ripped Away From You, Or Anything, Just Tell > Me, Because I Feel Like I'm The Only Person That Has Ever Felt This Way In > The World Right Now. > > > > > > Love, > > > Lora > ****************************************** > > "Never Before, Never Again You Will Ignore, I Will Pretend. But all worries aside, I want to ask everyones opinion on something. There are a few message boards that I go often when I am on AOL, and one of them has gotten me really upset. Someone, a non-EDA, non Jewel fan, saw Jewel in Details and posted that "the dress she is wearing just makes her looks like the trash that she is." you probably all know the dress that this person was referring to, the one that Jewel tried on in her hotel room and didnt realize until later that it was see-through. I was so upset that someone could say something like that about Jewel, because I'm sure alot of you can understand how I feel about her, that she is just ... an angel. So I posted my response on how Jewel didnt know it was see-through, she is definately NOT trash and a few words on her talent. Then this person posted again, the next day, comparing Jewel to Gwen Stefani (of No Doubt, of all people) saying that Gwen had much more talent and more class then Jewel, called Jewel classless trash, and then commented on her "crooked teeth, and stringy hair". This, to me, was like being hit over the head. I tried to stay mature about it, so I just responded about how beautiful Jewel is and again on how she wasnt trash and all that. by this time I had a few people on my side, also sticking up for Jewel, but this person posted again. This time she decided to go on and on about Jewel not wearing a bra, saying she was fat (huh?), talentless, and ugly. So, my question is do you all think that I should just ignore this pointless battle? Or should I keep sticking up for Jewel? It really is annoying when people dont understand Jewel. I've got a solution to my own problem. This is something I used to to while tape trading. You can buy IRCs (International Reply Coupons), which are basically postage meter stamps that the Canadian (or elsewhere) Post Office will place on your SASE. You tell them where you are sending your self-adressed stamped envelope (ie. California), and they'll place enough postage in IRCs on the envelope to get it back to whereever you live (therefore you have to mail it from the town that you want to receive it in!). Thanks, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Jul 1997 14:05:02 -0400 From: Paul Noble Subject: Looking for a guitar for beginning player -Reply Hmm I get asked this question a lot. The answer depends on you. Here are a few things to consider though when buying a first time guitar.... Typically, a lessor expensive guitar doesn't sound as good and is harder to play than an expensive one. I say typically, because that isn't always the case. If playing the guitar is something you KNOW you're going to stick with come hell or high water, then I suggest going for it and get something nice. I own an old Guild F-50 and love it. However, if you are the 'like to start something but rarely finish it' type of person then buying a less expensive guitar might be the way to go. Also note this... Most guitars that you try out in the music stores are not 'set up'. Meaning that the action is usually too high, (means you have to push a lot harder to play the chords and notes), the neck might be a little warped (won't stay in tune and makes the action higher) and other things. So its not always easy to tell exactly how well a guitar plays right off the rack. If it plays pretty well off the rack than count on it being at least a little easier to play after its set up. Also note that buying a cheaper harder to play guitar makes the task of learning to play the guitar harder. If you have the bucks and the desire, get a good one. You can always sell it if you loose interest. Good guitars typically hold or increase in value over time. Its outrageous (goodly outrageous that is) how much my LesPaul has increased in value over the years. I'd like one of those Taylors myself. :) Hope that helps.. - -Paul >>> 07/06/97 08:23pm >>> Hi everybody. I am really to buy a guitar, partly because of inspiration from watching Jewel live. :) Anyway I would like to know which type of guitar is better for long term(since I want to play guitar for awhile), classical or folk guitar is better? Do you think I should buy one that is more expensive or a cheap one to get me started then switch to more expensive one when I know how to play? Lastly what brand of guitar is good? Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions. As the sun set behind her not much was left to the imagination. I don't want to be cynical, but someone please convince me that Ms. Stevenson, whom we already know dislikes Jewel, would have said this about anyone else. It's funny how she phrases it; like Jewel knew what would happen when the sun set behind her and she MUST have known that her set would happen during sunset. (Shifting fully into sarcasm because it feels better to vent this way...) And besides she's always coaxing the media to jump all over her. After all, the press never does anything but the will of its subject. > Interestingly, Jewel had earlier told the news conference: "I think > women have been pretty dependent on their sex to sell themselves, > generally in a lot of businesses, and something I've really > respected from a lot of the women here is that they're very balanced > in their sexuality." Oh, well. So what Jewel meant was, "In this day and age women don't need to depend on sex appeal to be successful, so sexuality should just get locked up in a closet." Well THAT would be balanced wouldn't it? Going by Ms. Stevenson's comment it seems that it would be. Silly Jewel! When will she understand that intelligent respectful people CAN'T be sexy? That's like saying, whats the point in reading People magazine, or US Interview. It's just something we're interested in. Whats the point in starting a conversation about the weather? You cant change it. What about discussing movies you saw with friends? You cant change the way they'll end the next time you watch them? I think people just do it because they enjoy it. They like to see what other people thing and feel strongly about their views. I couldnt say much about the actual discussion because I just delete all the messages in that string because, well it doesnt interest me to terribly, which I'd suggest you do, if you dont like a string, just delete it, no bother. :) Well, I guess that's all she wrote. :-) :~P ;-] :-* :·>, Christian > Why argue about Jewel's popularity? But, if you feel like it then go on ahead and stand up for Jewel, just don't like, get too caught up into it like I did cause it'll turn out really ugly.... One more thing if you can please don't insult Gwen Stafani of No Doubt cause she's my role model right next to Jewel. OK?? ONE more little thing, ht eperson is probably bored and doesn't have anything to do so they go ahead and say this crap and if you want you could ignore it. But I wouldn't it would be kinda fun battling for Jewel. You never know she might be right there reading the thing as you reply, so you never know...... No grills, but it does have picnic tables, so, anyone who can might want to bring a grill (maybe tabletop grills?) There is no set check-in time, but if nobody's available when we ring the buzzer, we may have to wait (whoever arrives first ;-) The check-out time is loosely set at noon, but it depends on us - I assured her we would not have trash all over the place and that our group would be picking up after themselves :-) :-) :-) I believe Rob and I (and the kids) will be there around 3pm on Friday. I'll let you all know if that changes :-) I sent a questionnaire to everyone that is on my attendee list - If you did not receive it, then I either missed it, or you're not on the list - in which case, please contact us at BRSVL97@aol.com.- I have approx 40 ppl on my list so far and a couple others who I need to contact, so it's shaping up to be quite a turnout :-) It's only 10 days away, so keep us posted about your plans :-) Tammy :-) Check out the site at http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/bv97/bv97.htm :-) :-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Jul 1997 16:18:55 -0400 From: sm_kartalopo@ACAD.FANDM.EDU (Stephanie Kartalopoulos) Subject: hello...can someone help please? oh, BTW, NJC =) Hello my loves...
