She got there at 7AM bright and early and was the first one in line. 10AM rolls around, the outlet opens, and the clerk tells her, "Oh, I'm sorry tickets don't go on sale till next Saturday." UGH! I spoke to James yesterday, and he informed me that he got the van that he so desperately needed, thanks mostly in part, to our consorted efforts as EDA's with the various fundraisers that we all contributed to! You guys, we have made his life so much better! See what every little dollar can do to change a life? He explained that since acquiring the van, he has been able to maintain a much more "normal" existence of a 21 year old. He sounded very enthused about his trips to the mall, where he got tons of new clothes (and didn't bring me anything..shheesh), and the movies, as well as countless Padre games. He also added that now, he and I can go places easier, since the van cannot be driven by him...but I could drive him, and we have many adventures planned beginning with him buying me a new pair of fabulous shoes that he owes me! (Details later) Anyway, he and I are planning to attend some more Padre games, and I am happy to say that he is more than ready to hit the bars on Garnet with me...and so, if you are in San Diego, and happen to see a crazy blonde, on a skateboard that is taller than she is...with a big butt and too much makeup, being pulled along by a hottie in a wheelchair, say hello, because that is me and James! (He said he shopped for a sidecar for me to ride in, but that we would have to sale more bagels for that...and that we were all sick of them by now.) I would also like to pass along that James' physical therapy is progressing amazingly, and he stood up, with help, for the first time in 8 months just this week. He feels very confident that he will be stealing my waves soon! That made me happy! Hope you guys all can fathom the effect you have all had on this remarkable, fun-loving guy! When one tooth on top doesn't have another tooth on the bottom to impact against, the jaw bones start changing shape. After a while some of the teeth will get so crooked that they may loosen and she could loose some. Infections in your mouth lead to infections in your sinuses and ear canal. Do you know how important it is for a singer to be able to hear themselves sing. Try listening to someone singing along while they have headphones on. I think what you really mean is that Jewel is perfect despite her imperfections. Me to. Yea, she won't die from crooked teeth, but you shouldn't hate her if she fixes them to improve her health. Would the person that posted the links to the pictures in that British magazine please contact me. I deleted your post. In the picture is a close up of her mouth wide open. Her one wiggly tooth on top is kind of cute and is her trademark. But when you see what is happening to all her bottom teeth, you will understand my point. The only reason I like Jewel's teeth the way they are is because they are part of her and they just prove how Jewel hasn't let stardom go to her head. Haven't seen the picture in question, but I thought I'd interject anyway. ;) I don't know anybody who's had work done on their bottom teeth, but the one person I know who as an adult had minor (probably considerably less significant than would be required to fix Jewel's cute wiggler) cosmetic work done on her upper teeth now sounds like a completely different person. The voice is the same, but pronunciation is entirely different. Next time you find yourself talking, count the number of times your tounge hits your front teeth or the roof of your mouth or your bottom lip hits your front teeth and you'll understand why. She didn't have a lisp or any "problems" before, nor has she developed any since, but it sounds like a different person talking. "s"'s, "f"'s, "th"'s, "n"'s, "l"'s, "t"'s, "d"'s, etc are all significantly and unmistakably different coming out of her mouth now. Not better or worse, just *different*. I seriously doubt the bottom set of teeth impact speech as severly as the top row, and as you mentioned if severely out of whack, it could pose health problems later. But if that severe, it could require work on her jaw as well. Guess what I'm trying to say is that Jewel has more reason to fear the dentist (and more reason to care for her mouth) than most of us. ;) bob ------------------------------ Date: 5 Jul 97 19:29:44 +0100 From: Chris Groves Subject: Jewel's Teeth PLEASE IGNORE IF YOU'RE NOT INTERESTED IN JEWEL'S TEETH. Back to lurkdom, Heather .c The Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - Chart-topping singer Jewel has heard the comparisons to Joni Mitchell. She just doesn't understand them. ``I'd never heard Joni Mitchell before I did my album,'' the 23-year-old singer-songwriter says in the August issue of US magazine. ``I'd heard a lot of Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald. ... I've never been a real music fan. I'm odd that way.'' So odd, she confesses, that a friend used to bring her up to speed by playing selections from his record collection. ``I'd never heard the Replacements,'' she says. ``I'd never heard the Beatles' `White Album.' He sat me down and had what he called Jewel 101 classes.'' Her debut, ``Pieces of You,'' has already spawned two hit singles - ``Who Will Save Your Soul?'' and ``You Were Meant for Me.'' Jewel says she is simply amazed by her success. ``It's like a jalopy winning the Indy 500,'' she says. AP-NY-07-05-97 1440EDT Copyright 1997 The Associated Press. I agree with you on a couple of points. We all have our opinions and everyone should feel free to give them, and not feel afraid to do so. Be careful of groups where you don't feel comfortable expressing a different viewpoint from the rest of the group. However, I'm curious. What makes you feel that Jewel is "closer to a goddess than most"? I don't see Jewel that way at all. I love her lyrics and I think she has a ton of potential, but a GODDESS? I DON'T THINK SO. You know, this is something I've never understood. Why is it that people in the public eye are seen with such rose-tinted glasses? Jewel is a human woman. She's not a supernatural being. She's not an angel (anyway, who IS? Certainly not me...) And she's definitely not a goddess. She could be the most wonderful person on the planet and she would still NOT be a goddess. Does anyone worship Mother Theresa and have a "shrine" on the internet for her and call her a "goddess"? Hell No. Good honest everyday people who radiate love and do great works are not called gods and goddesses, but if you can play music or sports, you are guaranteed of drawing Instant Worshippers. Makes me seriously wonder about us and our priorities. I'm not flaming anyone and I'm sorry for the rant, but I just had to get it out. There is nothing wrong with being a fan of someone, but I believe there is something seriously wrong when we start to worship people who are not "better" than you are. And this creates a potential of being manipulated and used by people who believe you "worship" them. Let's try to keep our feet on the ground, being honest and sincere. No one should feel that Jewel is a goddess, and therefore above reproach or criticism. And no one should be afraid to criticize Jewel if they do it in a non-judgmental way, non-attacking way. I end up deleting more than half my mail on this list because it's all about silly nonesense. For example, what kind of toilet paper Jewel uses. I mean, really, who cares? I was afraid to speak my true opinion about all of this until Casey spoke up. Now I know I'm not alone. Jewel is an artist. I don't think she'd feel extremely proud if she knew people were talking about her hair and teeth, etc. Any musician wants to know that people are discussing their music, not their personal life. So, please, if you are truly moved by Jewel's lyrics and voice, talk about her music. If you want only to know about hair, nails, teeth, toilet paper, stick to tabloids and stop writing about the superficial stuff. I can't speak for anybody else, but I know that I am not interested in any of that garbage. Thanks for listening. An "Honest" EDA ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Jul 1997 15:30:29 -0700 From: naveenrao@juno.com (Naveen Rao) Subject: SJC: The comprehensive wonky tooth post, and my braces story Well, I thought long and hard about this thread this morning and decided to join in...I'm no dental student, but I am a braces veteran =) I guess there are basically two ways to fix crooked teeth... One, maxillofacial surgery. I had this surgery a few years ago to pull down one of my teeth for braces...it was real short and didn't hurt much, but it was only one tooth. It straightened that one tooth, but if Jewel was to hae this surgery on all of her wonky teeth, it could be quite painful. Plus, you have to have novocaine in your mouth and you can't feel it for about a week. So speaking is out of the question, and forget singing. The next option is, yes, braces...*shudder*. Five long years of braces, elastics, and retainers and I've finally got straight teeth. During that time, I went through hellish pain and torture ;-) . For those of you who haven't had braces or don't plan on getting them, and for those of you who were born with straight teeth, (damn you ;-) they stuff your mouth with metal brackets, wires, and cement until you wanna throw up. They say it won't look bad, but they've never had braces themselves. :-) So your mouth is stuffed with this mass of metal, and you can't talk right until you get them off. Five years of muffled speech, not smiling in pictures, and not being able to whistle, combined with never being able to eat corn on the cob or chewing gum and living with the constant fear of getting food stuck in your teeth, it's a very bleak five years. So anyway, this is a very unlikely option for Jewel, or anyone in the public eye...not only does it make you look strange, but it really affects your speech and singing. It's kind of sad...she couldn't get braces when she was younger, and now that she can afford them, she won't get them because, let's face it, people will think it looks strange for a singer to have braces. I guess she'll just have to settle for keeping her bottom lip closed most of the time (which is what I'm sure she does). Oh well, sometimes it be that way.
