When the word "I" is outlawed, selfishness indeed becomes a virtue. > promotes selfishness in her songs? I've heard all this talk about random acts In a sense, yes. There is a positive selfishness. Jewel speaks of maintaining innocence, of learning to fly to spite another. There is also a view that pretty much makes the concept of altruism impossible. Consider this. People do good deeds because it gives them a sense of having done good. We feed ourselves spiritually by helping others. In a sense, it's our selfish desire for satisfaction that motivates us. Even if we gain no sense of pleasure, it can be argued that we're acting to prevent our own guilt for not acting. Mother Theresa becomes the most selfish person around, then. Although I do see her popularity soaring to new heights with the eventual release of her follow up album I believe there will be a time when Jewel's popularity will fade. That is all the more reason to cherish her success now because we she may never get a chance to experience it again. I am glad that she is successful so she can hopefully touch more people across the planet and some of them will become Jewel fans for life. Jewel's current success can ensure that she will no longer have to worry about her finances and she can afford to tour in small venues for years to come and do HER music, not what the record companies want her to do. Although I believe Jewel is extremely talented, there will no doubt be a time when she is no longer 'in' and all the teenage girls will find another singer to adore and scream over. It is then that Jewel will return to the small venues and those of us who saw her through her popularity will see her return to the intimate settings we once knew. I believe that Jewel has many more powerful and emotional performances left in her and she will continue to tour for decades to come. And I know that when those days arrive I will look around the crowd and see the familiar faces of such friends as Mike Connell, Mr. BB, Dennis Harris, Sean Hooks, Liz, Igor, and many more EDA's. After a period of study in Geneva and Rome, Giacometti settled in Paris in 1922. He established himself as one of the leading surrealist sculptors of the 1930s with work that showed a great deal of wit and imagination. Perhaps the most outstanding of his surrealist pieces is The Palace at 4 AM (1932-33, Museum of Modern Art, New York City), an architectonic skeleton holding suspended figures and objects that expresses the subjectivity and the fragility of the human sense of time and space. In 1948 Giacometti exhibited his works after a 12-year lapse, during which he experimented in sculpture and painting. From his experiments Giacometti evolved a distinctive style of highly expressive, attenuated figures. Infused with a pervasive melancholy, both his paintings and sculptures convey a sense of tenuous existence, as though the figures were constantly threatened with obliteration by the surrounding space. In such paintings as The Artist's Mother (1950, Museum of Modern Art), the seated figure seems about to disappear in the web of lines and strokes that delineates the sitting room and its faintly ominous furnishings. Hope this helps y'all, Neal ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jul 1997 16:48:41 -0700 From: naveenrao@juno.com (Naveen Rao) Subject: JC: Jewel's music vs. lyrics With all the posts about whether people take the time to listen to Jewel's lyrics and understand what she is singing about, I wanted to relate my perspective. While most singers/songwriters have a lot of meaning and symbolism within their lyrics, few people take notice. In this post, I'm not going to wish that more people would listen to the meaning...instead, I want to talk about why people DON'T listen to it. A lot of us may understand the symbolism behind Jewel's, as well as others musicians' lyrics. But I'm sure that a lot of people on the list may not care what the lyrics mean, and that is perfectly okay - they just enjoy the music at face value. The music listening population in general is continuously searching for good music, regardless of whether the lyrics mean anything. We shouldn't judge music on whether it has meaning or not... I, too, am guilty of this. When we get annoyed with people who dismiss Jewel as a bad musician, why worry about it? There's no point trying to convince them "she's a great musician, especially because of the lyrics" - they probably just don't like the style of music. Playing them other Jewel songs is great, though, because it gives them more MUSIC to think about and base their decision on. For example...we all know that Bob Dylan is a prime example of lyrical symbolism. But if I didn't also like his style, then I probably wouldn't like Dylan altogether. There are countless artists who have meaning to their songs... yes, even the Spice Girls or Hanson - people like or dislike them, however, based on their unique STYLE of music. So if people like WWSYS or YWMFM after hearing on the radio because it was catchy, that's just fine, even if they don't have a clue about what the lyrics mean. When I hear songs on the radio, I love to sing along... songs such as Push (matchbox 20) or The Only Difference (Wallflowers) or even Sunny Came Home (Shawn Colvin)...but I don't have the slightest idea what they mean. I'm sure it would be interesting to find out, but quite frankly, I'm not really interested. I suppose a hard core fan of one of these artists would condemn me for my ignorance, but hey, I like the MUSIC, and that's all that's important for me. So anyway, what I've been trying to say in this confusing and disorganized post is that it's okay if people don't understand the lyrics; they may love the music. And it's also okay if they hate the music altogether...they probably just don't like the style. On the other hand, by all means correct them if they have a misperception about the artist, such as (God have mercy) "Jewel is a slut". Sorry I had to say that and make it so vulgar, but I've heard it before. Naveen P.S. I went to the library today and chanced upon a book all about Modigliani...here's what I gathered. Amedeo Modigliani, son of Italian Jewish painters, studied art in Florence in Venice in the late 1800's and early 1900's. In 1906, Modigliani moved to Paris where he became a legend for his African-influenced paintings and sculptures. Very "Picasso-esque", Modigliani's art is almost cubist at times. This isn't too surprising since Picasso and Braque were working on the cubist style at the time. (I think - correct me if I'm wrong, though) Wow...I can't believe I remembered that much from Humanities :-) While his art was not aesthetically pleasing to me, it was certainly unique. Well, that's about all the useless trivia I could find, but heck, in case you make it on Jeopardy one day, you'll thank me =) An interesting thing I found when I was browsing some of Modigliani's color plates in the book - his works seem to have influenced Jewel's work a great deal...not only in "Memoirs of A Housewife", but also in her original artwork. If you compare her drawings in the Tiny Lights Tour Book to Modigliani's work, you'll probably find a striking resemblence. I'm just anxious to see this pop star fame fade away leaving Jewel with a few new fans and ALL the old ones. I'm sure the cycle will follow through just like that. It happened a few years ago to another one of my favourite bands, Primus. That dang beaver song (from their FIFTH album) comes out and suddenly everyone LOVES Primus! I had to see them in an arena on that tour. Then a year later they came back to town and played a club fitting less than 2000. If we're patient, we'll see Jewel's fame reach a comfortable equlibrium. Yesterday I got a tape made by you guys, the EDA Cover tape and I love it. I am surpised of the talent that many of you have and although I can't play the guitar yet ( I would like to learn it) I know that some of you must do something with that talent. Especially I would like to say to Katie McCurry: keep on doing this! You are so good in making music! Start something on your own or with a couple of musicians/friends/angels and make your own music, I think your are creative enough...... And I don't want to left the other great artists out of this so come on and make that music and go for a serious contract. Thank you Debbie for this tape and I will treasure it for always! Finally I would like to know what you guys did to make this tape. How did you organize this Eric (Eric Montas)? Could you contact me and I will think about doing something like this in Holland also, for all the Etheridge fans I met last year. I know they will appreciate an idea like this one! Thank you for your time. The only part I disagree with is the travelling to NC to do a coffeehouse show before she was famous. I met Jewel 3 weeks before her CD came out in a coffeehouse here in Philadelphia... she was doing several shows a week on the coast. On Fridays she played Philly, then she drove up to Boston for a Monday show (i think), then down to somewhere in Maryland (again, I think) and would end up back in Philly for friday. I could not believe the devotion she had, to drive so much, sleep so little, and do so much. I agree with just about everything else you said. While I did enjoy her and her music before she was famous, for someone to say that another is not a true fan because they were drawn in by WWSYS is... well, preposterous. Anyway... just adding my ten cents John ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Jul 1997 09:43:46 EDT From: stratman7@juno.com (JAMES R BAILEY) Subject: Re: scrolling I do Jules, glad i am not the only one! :0) c-ya, JULES (stratmans wife) " I'll get you my pretty..............and your little dog too." ~wicked witch of the west On Wed, 02 Jul 1997 00:27:19 -0400 julie writes: >Just wondering. It was: <> It seems too me that Sean is jumping to major conclusions with absolutely zero information on which to base the above statement. Sean, did it ever cross your mind that perhaps they wanted a sequence where two Jewel's were simultaneously on screen? Perhaps the body double was used to simply achieve this without using cheesy special effects. I'm not sure because I haven't seen the video yet, but you are making some pretty strong statements based on nothing. Please don't take this as a flame either, because I've always respected your opinion, even though I disagree with much of what you say. You're posts are always well thought out & thought provoking. However, that above statement really cannot be made by anyone who has not seen the video. I'll be leaving town for a few days & I hope everyone has a pleasant holiday weekend. I recently received a free copy of "The Web Magazine" and lo and behold, Jewel is on the cover. What luck, I tell you. I took a browse through the magazine's web site, but all I could find was an image of the cover displaying Jewel. I don't want to regurgitate the entire article, since it's not ALL about Jewel, but here are some excerpts from the article. Oh, and if you would like to try your luck, I believe you can sign up for a free trial issue of the mag online. Maybe you'll get as lucky as me. :-) *********************************************************************** Publication: The Web Magazine Issue: July 1997, pp 28-29 Title: WHO MAKES THE HITS? One-name wonders Jewel and Poe sing the web's praises Author: Laura Victoria, former lead singer for _Daddy Don't Go_ Web site: www.webmagazine.com ...up-and-coming rock stars publicly recognize that the Web can help sell a million records, help land a record deal, or at least inflate a weary ego with an adoring Web site from a fan or two. The [success] of...Jewel Kilcher, [an artist] on Atlantic records, [proves] this. Listen to the stories told by the massively popular Jewel (whose biggest songs so far are "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "You Were Meant for Me"), who got her start doing the open-mike coffee-shop circuit. "I have an incredible fan base.... The radio stations wouldn't play me, but my fans spread the word about me so much, and through the Internet... they got radio to play it, and I'm really thankful." Jewel's Web based fans have even organized a group called the Every Day Angels--with their own Web sites. "I talk to the Every Day Angels (EDA) a lot," says Jewel. "They show up at my shows with little signs and blue guitars with little EDAs painted on them. When I was recording in Woodstock, they asked if they all got there would I put on a free concert? I said sure! So all these EDAs that have known each other for two years--since the beginning of my album--all met through the computer. 'Jewelstock' they called it. They drove from Missouri, San Francisco, everywhere, to come to Jewelstock, and I put on two shows for them." CAN THE WEB BREAK AN ARTIST? Though the Internet played an important role in launching their careers,...Jewel still had to promote [her butt] off through standard media outlets. When record labels and rock stars aren't counting the cash, they may be searching their souls. That's another scenario where the Net can help. "When I get upset or disillusioned by the business," says Jewel, "it's really refreshing.... The Every Day Angels' site sends me e-mails telling me they appreciate what I'm doing, and I can't tell you how much it helps me at times. When you become jaded and cynical, when you think you have to be high-tech, slick, and too cool, they let you know that sincerity is what they really respond to." *************************************************************** Cheers!
