Sean - Again, a light in the darkness. As I sit and blast through my three digests a day, ignoring Spice girls, talks on list politics, and vacant comments on what peoples favorite clouds are, I'm wondering what I'm doing here. I haven't listened to POY in 6 months. I listened through the JewelStock tapes a few times, and the Christmas stuff and Boston show, and was amazed, but it's some how disappointing. There's an emptiness that I feel when I listen to Jewel, that is remarkably like when I listen to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Janis, Jimi, Ella Fizgerald, old Bob Dylan, and other people that I can never see as they once were. Someone or something has died, and it makes me sad. I love Jewel's music. But she's not the same performer that I knew a year or two ago. Jewel, the small venue artist who had no qualms about telling people who were talking in her show to "shut the fuck up", is gone. Two hit singles, and she's doing MTV unplugged. Clapton did MTV Unplugged, and he's been in the music business since rock was ROCK. What's happening here? She'll never be the same. And you'll never pay $10 to see her in a 100 person venue again. Am I disappointed? Yes, but not really. It's kind of like when one of your old girlfriends gets married. (yes, I'm that old that it's happening a lot :) You always are a little bit jealous. But you have to be happy for them. They are happy, and that has to make you happy. Hurts a little, but the intellect in you realized that people do grow and change, and sometimes people leave and do different things, and that's got to be ok. Do I think differently about Jewel? I missed JewelStock, something I can never forgive myself for. The next time I got to see Jewel was with 4000 screaming teenagers yelling "I love you Jewel", not for her music and her soul, but for her smile and her tits. I was disappointed. I actually had to tell two young girls to shut up so I could hear jewel sing, because they were too busy talking during the concert. I don't think I will ever see Jewel in concert again, if this is the kind of venue that she's playing in. Rockfest? Get real. I'm losing my hair and getting old. My back hurts when I sleep on my bed, let alone in a car in some concert venue. Lilith Fair? No way. Most of the people at the show could be my kids. I want to SEE Jewel, not some speck on some stage who's got 35 minutes of time allotted to her. Why am I here? One of the reasons that I'm still here is for and because of people like you. I don't know you other than from your occasional biting posts. I like what you have to say. You are a thinker, and that's most important to me. But you are losing the faith, if one can call it that. But there's hope. The other reason I'm here is for what happened to me on Monday night. I went to see Tara MacLean. She's how I imagine Jewel was 2 to 3 years ago. Just touring, living out of a bus, leading in for various artists that themselves are unknown. I talked to her after the show, told her I was an EDA, and she instantly was my friend. She was meeting people like us all over the country, and even though she was in a strange town, tired from the road, and probably a little bit lonely, she found someone who she could consider a friend, even though she had never met me before. It was a wonderful moment that never would have happened if I didn't listen to Jewel's music. Or if I stopped getting this list, like I was going to numerous times. Keep the faith, my friend. There are thousands of Jewel's out there, some will get to be famous and turn in to pop stars. Some will play coffee houses for the rest of their lives. I just want the chance to see a few of them and tell them to keep doing what they do. They make a meaning to people's lives. Chris P.s. Posting this ramble to the list also. Might help some others of us out there. Or maybe I'm just thinking to much of my self. Either way, it here. Christopher G. But we cannot expect Jewel to remain static and shy away from larger venues like arenas and instead continue to play in smaller and more intimate places like the InnerChange Coffeehouse. Jewel is never selfish with her music, and when her album "Pieces of You" first released she performed in about every concerts that she could perform in. Granted, she probably didn't have any choice cuz she had to promote her music and radio stations refused to play her songs on the air. But Jewel believes that her music can make a difference, and her songs like WwSYS and POY contains messages that, I think, are very social-conscious and inspiring. Right now, it's difficult to tell which Jewel fans are real and who are not...only time will tell. But Jewel should be allowed to evolve musically and creatively, in her own terms. We as EDAs should not be selfish with her music because I do think her music can change the world (or at least let them take a hard look at themselves). Jewel can go where she wants to go, whether in a small coffeehouse or Dodger's stadium, and we as Jewel fans should always be there to support her. Kim ______________________________________________________________________ JIMMY STEWART DIES AT 89 As Jimmy Stewart, whose long, gawky, slow manner used to give impersonators a lot to chew on, used to say: "If I had my career over again? I'd speed it up." It seemed, however, that the only time the beloved actor's timing was off was recently. Slowed by age, still mourning the loss of his devoted wife Gloria in 1994 to cancer, Stewart himself has finally succumbed. He died in his Beverly Hills home Wednesday of an apparent heart attack. He was 89. Now he is gone, the last male of his generation of the first great stars of the talkies -- perhaps the generation of greatest movie stars of all time. James Stewart was born on May 20, 1908, in Indiana, Penn. His dad ran a hardware store, and the boy grew up wanting to be a magician or an accordionist -- much like the adolescent dreamer he played in "It's a Wonderful Life." He caught the acting bug while in the Boy Scouts, and joined the drama group at Princeton, where he majored in architecture. In 1935 he met his lifelong friend, Henry Fonda -- who was a staunch liberal, just as Stewart was and remained a rock hard conservative -- and together they set their sights on Broadway first, then Hollywood. (They both admitted that the secret to their friendship was that they never discussed politics.) Both actors' careers got going at about the same time, though Stewart's took off like a rocket when director Frank Capra capitalized on his special manner, and cast him in "You Can't Take It With You" (1938) and "Mr.Smith Goes to Washington" (1939). For 1940's brilliant social comedy, "The Philadelphia Story," with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, Stewart won his Oscar -- which his dad took and displayed in the hometown hardware store. (It still remains on a museum near the very same site.) During World War II, Stewart flew 20 missions over Germany, and emerged from the service the highest decorated entertainer in the U.S. military. Returning to Hollywood after the War, he started taking on interesting, darker roles, such as that of the prosecutor in "Anatomy of a Murder," and his series of work with director Alfred Hitchcock -- including the recently restored "Vertigo." Stewart also finally married, after having been one of Hollywood's longest and most eligible bachelors. He and Gloria wed in 1949, when he was 41, and they had four children. A socially prominent couple (their Beverly Hills mansion stood next door to Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz's), the Stewarts were considered among the movie community's happiest husband and wife. "I'm an inarticulate man who tries," Stewart once modestly said of himself "I don't really have all the answers, but for some reason, somehow, I make it." Way to make us newbies feel welcome... :) I'm not trying to criticize, honestly...it's just seeing that all these posts downing the new people on the list and the new Jewel fans is really funny when seen next to all the "We are everyday angels" and "We love everyone" mission statements I keep reading here... The reason I say I'm not criticizing is because I can understand...I know what it's like to have a strong love and loyalty for a little-known artist and then see that artist become a big MtV star...In a way it's painful...But as far as Jewel goes, you have to realize she's a *unique* artist...Because of her unusual (by today's pop music standards) sincerety, gentleness, positive attitude and true poetic ability, Jewel is the kind of artist that is not goign to touch everybody...Sure, there are those out there who only like jewel because she's cute, or who are only into her radio singles...So be it...Maybe that sucks, but it's the way it is... But you see, by the very nature of Jewels unusual and beautiful way of touching people, the people she attracts and the very nature of her attraction as a musician is different than that of say, No Doubt, or even Alanis...I don't think she can be exploited as easily as those others because the people who would exploit her, her fans, usually do not have that in their natures...And the way we feel about Jewel, there's no way it would ever cross our minds to compromise her image in any way...I hope I'm explaining this right... What I'm trying to get across is that if Jewel's music really touches you, it *TOUCHES* you...it doesn't matter if You've been a loyal follower of Jewel since the beginning or if you've just heard WWSYS for the first time...transcendence is transcendence, and that's what I feel when I listen to Jewel...It's a kind of positive energy I've needed for a *LONG* time...And this is coming from a total Cynical/Nirvana-loving/Flannel wearing child of grunge, so it really means something when I say that... :) Basically, I'm saying please don't give up on Jewel, and please don't sterotype those of us who are new here and who never got to see her in person, never got to go to Jewelstock, etc...She's one of the only artists I've ever heard who has publically talked about her struggle to maintain integrity and spirituality in a very commercial business... I don't think she will compromise herself in a way that will alienate those of us who love her... Anyway... Thanks for listening... heart, Dancer ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jul 1997 20:48:57 -0500 From: Steve Garrett Subject: MTV UNPLUGGED JUst have to say one thing about that show...totally awesome. I really = liked how she mostly sang songs not from her album. As usual, Jewel is = awesome. I guess what makes her so good is the content of her music, = and how she puts so much feeling into her music, like it's a part of = her. Hopefully, they'll come out with the CD, before her album so we = can enjoy something new until it comes out. I'm not saying her album is = getting old, I mean, well, I still love it...well, you guys know what = I'm trying to say :)> Well, I really enjoyed it, and I'm glad they = aired it again, 'cause I missed it the first time.=20 Steve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jul 1997 20:45:08 -0500 From: Steve Garrett Subject: Re: Jewel's Popularity Hey all, This subject has been disturbing me quite a lot. Many of you have good = points that everyone should be happy for her fame, and that playing to = large audiences is good for her success. Also, many of you also have = other good points, such as many people don't appreciate her music as we = EDA's do, and that it would be better for her to have a small audience = because it sounds better, and it is better. I aggree mostly with everyone, but why discuss. Why not celebrate her = success. Why do we have to ponder on her popularity? So what, a lot of = people don't appreciate her to the fullest, not everyone enjoys her = music like an EDA, and not everyone is an EDA...the world is not perfect = :) I'm just glad that she has hit it so big, and even though there are = some idiots who go to see her just because she's beauitful, and they're = to shallow minded to enjoy and understand her other songs, not just the = singles, there are people like us EDA's who truly love her, her music, = and we can understand them, therefore understanding each other and other = EDA's. =20 Steve Garrett ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jul 1997 22:01:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Sean Hooks Subject: Pro-Popularity Idiocy Date: 02-Jul-1997 09:37pm EDT From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: Pro-Popularity Idiocy In my original post that started the renewed super-popularity/Time mag discussion I was very emotional I guess, for me. Well, that passed, I was hurt and in pain from what I see happening to an artist whose music I love. I must warn you that this post is much more logical, realistic, and less touchy, so dont anyone get their feelings hurt, dont get ruffled, this isnt a flame, its just a point of view. What are you pro-popularity people thinking?!?!?!?! Lets start by saying some good things though, like the guy who agreed with me sayin gthat I was a light in the darkness in a list of boring and irrelevent posts. Thank you. He had some very interesting things to say but unfortuanately he made one crucial error. In his post he said there are a thousand Jewels out there in coffeehouses just starting who are unpopular etc. That is so wrong. There is only one Jewel and the only people who she should be compared to are the likes of Dylan, Springsteen, Mitchell, etc. Yes shes that good when shes on. Is seeing her at a big venue going to be the life changing experience that a smaller one provides, no. Becuase Jewel is like he said, like all those other artists he mentioned, now untouchable un reachable and beyond us. She4 is a celebrity. Then there was the guy who said that the small venues are always better argument is wrong. That may hold true at coffeehouses but not at small venue concerts. There is a difference, I never yearned in my post or anytime for a return to Innerchange style lack of popularity. I yearn for small under one thousand seat venues where Jewel headlines, and although that me be impossible, at least keep it in the low thousands. Then there was the guy who said that we cant blame Jewel. Hey I like blaming Atlantic too but they dont totally control her. If she wants to walk out on that stage every night and announce at the beginning of each show that she will be refusing to play WWSYS or YFMFM and that everyone who is there just to here them should get the fuck out, she can do that. But that is a bit extreme. Why cant she be more like Tori Amos who is ironically also on Atlantic proving my point. Tori has 3 albums already compared to Jewels one and she has had NUMEROUS opportunities to release singles and get huge and has chosen not to. That is why you dont see her on MTV and pop top 40 radio, it is her choice. Jewel has the same choice, no? Or what about Phish who undoubtedly has the fan base to become super huge pop successes and have many pop sounding songs. They go as far as to REFUSE to let MTV play their videos and release their many videos only to local video stations or local access type stations. These are just two examples but you can see my point. Jewel has choices, she is not just a pawn to Atlantic. Another point somebody brought up is that soon she will fade from popularity and the spotlight sighting Pearl Jam and Alannis as examples. Well, Pearl Jam had to try damn hard and endure an afwul lot to become unpopular. And Alannis is still huge, bad example there. So why would Jewel just suddenly become unpopular? As long as she looks good mass media pop mainstream will exploit her. Speaking of looks, this may be what disturbs me most about Jewel even though it is on the surface a very superficial issue. Two things, big issues, jump straight to mind and they are both very recent. Jewel is a luminous beauty as she is described in RS, and most of us have seen her in person or from back in the day when she wore no or little makeup. What the fuck is up with this caked on ugly ass makes her look like a slut-whore makeup?!?!?!?! On SNL, Interview, and Details she looks like shit compared to her stunning earthy young face on days gone by. Again she has choice here, she may now have pro makeup people to do it for her which she didnt have before, but its not like someone is tying her to a chair and spraying it on her. And second, the body double in the new video. How offensive is that?? If you dont want to do something cause its too revealing or whatever, dont fucking do, having a body double is something very heinous because it is fake and deceptive. Why Jewel why? Now please dont get the impression that I am anti Jewel . If these are all things that she actively wants then so be it, her choices are supported by me, but with her naivete and innocence and faith, she is probly moreeasily manipulated and exploited than most. It s been said by her back 2 years ago. When she was with Sean Penn. She said the one thing she couldnt handle was beign with him in public. He was constantly mobbed and invaded. She said she would be so intimidated and hateful of that kind of fame and those kinds of intrusions on her personal life. Well, you got what you feared Jewel, happy?? Oh, and then there was the guy who said that Jewel was living in vans and doing meaningless jobs cause she wanted to be famous sopmeday, wrong. She just wanted to make music and be real, regardless of how many people listened, again see above. This is the guy who says he wouldve never seen her if not for large venues? Well why not? Do you only attend shows of artists that everyone knows that are on the radio and TV? Why would you say you can only attent big shows, that just makes no sense to me. And lastly I guess, he said that how can I criticize people or say that they cannot appreciate Jewel. Because I can and because I am right. I see how the pop mainstream works and the sickening array of half hearted so called fans that it attracts. I was at the Beacon show in March where she was thoroughly disrespected at an audience of annoying teeny chicks who screamed DURING songs and outright misogynists who berated her through the night. It resulted ina sickening short hour long set that was on top of everything else, being performed by a Jewel who was literally ill. HAve some faith, it will get better?? I'm tired of that bullshit, its bad and not looking bright. And basically the same holds true for the Wallflowers by the way who I knew since their first album but who are now an overplayed pop mainstream creation as well. AAAAHH!! And again, in defense of myself, I still love Jewel and the Wallflowers, they can do things in large venues and make points to many people that you dont have the methodology to fo in small venues when youre less popular. Its the baggage that comes with the popularity that insenses me, not the fact that lots of people are becoming fans or hearing a message. That I adore and respect and is the only saving grace of becoming more popular. That is not the type of attitude I have towards the situation at all so please dont misread it. But I have been criticized for being selfish about Jewel and her music. Well, as Ayn Rand so eloquently put it, Selfishness is a Virtue. Guess thats it for me, this wasnt as incidiary or angry as I thought it might become. Me actually admitting that having a bigger fanbase has some good points. Guess I'm getting soft in my old age :) Well, whatever, see you all later, I just felt it necessary to respond. Talk well of me, well, actually, just talk of me, I wont be in the chat room or posting for a while now I hope. So bye kids.
