We all have our own mind, heart and soul. Because I think you're getting at what I said, I'll respond. I don't mean that since this burst of fame, Jewel can't touch any new fan's heart. What I meant was, the fans acquired through MTV (as opposed to those acquired through more active means) are generally of a less loyal quality. Now I'm sure that there ARE people among the MTV- drawn crowd who really do appreciate Jewel. All I'm saying is, the fans gained through touring and the early buzz about POY, seem to be more loyal and active in appreciating Jewel's music because the means by which they found Jewel shows a certain passion for music. I think it comes down to quality vs. quantity. Do we want Jewel to play arenas half filled with people who came for the singles or do we want concert halls packed with EDA-types waiting anxiously to hear the latest thing Jewel wrote? (Sorry but I get a little offended to hear people who call themselves Jewel fans acting like she's only got about 10 minutes worth of decent music.) Which scenario of the above would you prefer if you were her? I am amazed that > some people are just sitting around waiting for the fame to go away so that > Jewel can return to the small coffee house concerts. Sorry, but I would You know, I finally realized something here... The conclusion that fame is bad seems to be, primarily, based on the assumption that Jewel can't be appreciated in large groups. She's popular right now, so being at these big venues is the thing to do; people see her because it's cool to see her, not for her music; blahblahblah. For many artists, I've made referrence to the way Glenn Gould described a proper musical experience as "an expression of pure ecstasy," one in which all participants are so emotionally drawn into the performance, that the performance becomes an intense shared experience. Over in the various Deborah Gibson discussion areas (mailing lists, newsgroup, etc), people have recently been discussing how wonderful it's been to catch her in 50-100 person venues... It's obvious that small places are the place to play, everyone loves you there, right? HORSE MANURE. Much historical reconstruction has gone on, methinks. Go to any coffee shop and play before the 40 or so people hanging out, plus the various people that pass through. Go around afterwards and ask people what you played. Sure, if you're Jewel, and you're really popular now, everyone remebers vividly. Substitute someone new, or go back in time when Jewel got her fist few gigs. Sure, you'll catch a few people's hearts, entwine yourself in a few minds, but after that half dozen that fell in love, there's the dozen that didn't care, the 20 who are in the coffee shop because it's cool to be in a coffee shop. We can appreciate Jewel in a small venue because we already appreciate her. Small venues allow an artist to make it an experience, because winning over the audience doesn't require winning over as many people. It's sheer arrogance to think the coffee shop audience will automatically appreciate a talent, even one as great as Jewel, however. Thinking about it, I really can't bring myself to believe that first Innerchange crew was any more appreciative than anywhere else. Sure, they probably didn't holler about body parts, but those are shallow insults, ones that don't pierce anywhere near as deeply into the soul as to be quietly looked at, then ignored. Hmmm... I need to lighten up, today. Open your minds the next time you're at a large venue. Sure, it's not the intimacy of the coffeeshop, but there's a completely different world of experience you can find there. 3,000 people snapping their fingers quietly is an absolutely amazing experience that 30 or even 300 just doesn't quiet accomplish... I can understand why some girls would be offended by how guys would look at Jewel and talk about how hot she is andmake it seem that that is what she's all about. But I believe the sexuality part that women are naturally associated with in our society cannot be changed. That doesn't mean that it's disrespectful necessarily. It's a compliment! And you can bet that if guys are looking at Jewel long enough, they'll see that there's a lot more to her than her beauty. Besides girls, we do it too! c'mon you can't tell me that you haven't been out with girlfriends and checked out some FINE guys and made some kinda sexual comment. haha =) To be honest, and pleeease don't send me hate mail! :) :) I think Jewel is definitely above average and very cutesy, innocent looking but I don't think that simply taken physically, that she is ALLLL that and a box of chocolates. But her music, the way her personality shines in her performances, her openness, her mind makes her all the more beautiful than any model. In all honesty, and feel free to discuss this, sometimes I think that Jewel would not have gotten so popular if she was a lot more, shall we say, average looking. What do you think? I've also seen posts about Jewel's growing popularity and that post about getting into a fight with a friend who didn't like Jewel. At school, I've bumped into TONS of people who don't like Jewel and call her whiny and crap. And I'm like what??? But I have to admit, I don't think I would like Jewel so much had my roommate not played her stupid CD over and OVER again. hehehe And it was truly only after seeing her in concert that I saw her so much more clearly, even though it was almost from the last row. It was the last night of her Tiny Lights tour in San Diego, april 4th. I waited by the stage for her to come out but she just HAD to go home. damn her, just kidding! sorry, I digress.. I can identify with what Sean, i think it was, said about hating how Jewel seems to have so much transient popularity now. Especially with her style, you don't want to let go of the moment because she's so very engaging. And being a fan, we're all kind of selfish and wish we could have her to ourselves sometimes. Yeah, I wish I could hire Jewel to do a private party for me in my backyard. :) But if she's selling triple platinum, i think that's saying more about how she is genuinely affecting a lot of people. I could be very wrong, but I'd rather give people the benefit of the doubt and be hopeful that someone like Jewel can change so many people. EDAs are living proof of that too! Anyways! I do think that it's very important to focus the energy that Jewel has revived in all of us on our own lives, even though we all are guilty of idolizing her. It's really amazing to see how we can all share each other's hardships together and to pull out of the mud together as well. I'm only so jealous of the old fogies on here =) who share the experience of Jewelstock. life DOES move on! love, christine ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jul 1997 15:42:01 -0400 From: Jeffrey Miller Subject: Re: memoirs of a housewife Horter3@aol.com wrote: > > > It was me that replied before, and I said Modigliani's. To all who thought this might be a good idea, I wrote asking if it would be possible for these two performers to come down. The response is that it is to far out of the way. We will work on a future engagement though. I will in addition try to get Tara to head down to this area of the country through either her or her management. If any of yall who do happen to see her in concert and get the chance to speak to her in person or her managers, I would appreciate it if you could pass along this small possibility. Those of us in the southeast are starving for these new artists that seemto skip this area of the country. Thank you.
