And the first time I saw Jewel was when WWSYS first came out on video back in `94. I was channel surfing and saw her and said "Wow, she's gorgeous" This doesn't prove my point does it? I'll get back to that. Back to beauty, I find, for example Sandra Bullock so-so, but one of my friends almost starts hyperventilating every time he sees her. There are tons more examples I could say but I won't. Of course now I'm talking about physical beauty, which could be changed very easily, Courtney Love comes into mind, so much difference from what she looked like before People vs. Larry Flynt. Although physical beauty can be easily modified, and this is what initially attracts you to somebody whether it be a singer or boyfriend\girlfriend, the inner beauty is what keeps you interested in that person. If you don't like that person's attitude or per- sonality chances are you won't listen or talk to that person. But about icons, I think if Jewel didn't want to become an icon she should have kept on waitressing. I know she never thought she would have become this big, but I'm sure she can handle it. She has until now. She should have seen it coming once PoY started selling or if not then, at Jewelstock. Icons are only people being put on pedestals by their fans (the media helps a bit too). Back to my third line, who has actually listened to Jewel since her first single came out. As I said, I stopped channel surfing upon seeing her beauty. But I listened to her music because I found it terrific. But even though some singers attract some fans by beauty, some actually see if they could sell without any biases by beauty. The example I mean here is Wild Orchid, three lovely(gorgeous) ladies who did not have a picture of themselves on their first single to see if infact people would like them for their music instead of their looks. And their single did awfully well(Talk to Me). Thought I'd mention it I've rambled enough for now. Thanks Pat PS. I would really like any angelfood anybody might have. Please e-mail me privatly. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 13:07:50 -0700 From: millerk@cport.com (Karen Miller) Subject: RE: NJC, yet another poem from me... that was a realy cool poem do you have any more? holly - ---------- From: SM_KARTALOPO@ACAD.FANDM.EDU[SMTP:SM_KARTALOPO@ACAD.FANDM.EDU] Sent: Monday, June 30, 1997 8:28 AM To: JEWEL@smoe.org Subject: NJC, yet another poem from me... McCarthy was right, communism is a threat because it is > always corrupted when put into practice because it never works out, there > is no reward for doing the best you can. Yep, you found the evil in communism. People are lazy. That's why COMMUNISM is evil and corrupt, because people are lazy and would rather watch their nation deteriorate into nothingness than do a bit of work. It's not communism that's corrupt, it's people. I find satisfaction to be a nice reward for doing well. Also, if the nation works hard, they prosper. If they are lazy, they fail. When people see that, they will try. Also, I missed one thing in my earlier post. In communism all people are equal. There is no ruler, no president, no king, no czar, no government of any kind. Total equality. The people support each other. And what do we do with the people who are lazy? Well, we can throw them to the lions, like in the old days. Just kidding. Seriously, you have a good point, except, as I said, communism isn't corrupt, it's the few lazy people. So perhaps the world isn't ready for communism yet. Perhaps we must wait untill we have evolved past all this greed and laziness. Travis p.s. I lost all respect for your argument when you said McCarthy was right. He destroyed peoples lives for their beliefs. He was a monster. The scene in "Beauty and the Beast" where Belle and the Beast are dancing and Mrs. Pots is singing their song used to make me cry because I think it's so beautiful and artistically done...the way they choreographed the whole scene and everything..... Joe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 18:13:48 -0400 (EDT) From: SDAngelLI@aol.com Subject: Help!!!(Radio Stations) I spoke with Jewel in San Diego just before Hot Dog Fest regarding our help with an old matter. She asked a small audience that at the sound check during her last concert of the "tiny lights tour" to start calling radio stations and request her new single "Foolish Games" I told her that we were working on a Rugburn song, that Steve told me was released. Turns out that the song was not released. Anyway Jewel asked that we start requesting FG. The radio stations didn't have the CD yet, at the time so a few list veterans advised that we wait until now. For you newbies, Jewel is not only a favorite singer that we all share. She's a good friend to all of us! You may never have met her, and still she holds a special place in heart for you as an EDA. When Chelsea and I met her in Denver, Chelsea mentioned "Everyday Angels" and Jewel's face lit up like we were her family. Please, help our friend out by calling as many radio stations as you possibly can. When we call a radio station, we are not Everyday Angels or fans of Jewel in an unconventional way. We are fans of music, in general and a sample of the general population of listeners, and the song that we want to hear, is "Foolish Games" by Jewel. If you choose to call a radio station outside of your area, dial *67 first so that you make it immpossible for them to trace the call. However, in my opinion, openly discussing about the least favorite or the worst Jewel songs ever produced is pointless, and only serve those critics who don't want to give Jewel the recognition that she deserves. Why should we talk about the bad points in others, esp. Jewel? As EDA, we should support Jewel always cuz we know we are not just admirers of Jewel or just want to jump on the Jewel bandwagon, now that she's famous. We love Jewel because we see the beauty from within Jewel and we're inspired by the powerful messages behind her music. To begin a topic about the Jewel songs that you dislike is to see Jewel as just another pop artist on the music world today, not as a wonderful individual who used her perseverence and faith to achieve the success she deserves today, and who tries to bring happiness and hope to those who listen to her music. Well, this is just my .02 and you may disagree if you want, but I will not engage nor participate in discussion about the least favorite Jewel song...Jewel is much more than just music. BTW, I love all Jewel's songs. Steven "What we call Human Nature in actuality is Human Habit." - -Jewel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #512 ***************************
