Yup, makes lots of sense to me. I've always thought this about Jewel, and I think she's a really good role model for teenage girls. Jewel is beautiful in the commercial sense in the way that she has a pretty face and big tits. But she would never be able to make it as a model because she doesn't have the real commercial beauty other than that. If she ever went to a modeling agency (before she was famous of course) they would tell her to lost 30 pounds, get her teeth straightened, and then talk about modeling. She is not the image of beautiful that everyone (especially young girls) is force fed by Hollywood and modeling agencies. HOWEVER... Jewel is beautiful, and she knows that she's beautiful just the way she is. She doesn't try to fit into the mold of beauty that everyone sees in magazines and in movies. Someone wrote about how girls might feel bad about themselves knowing that they could never look like Jewel. Well, I think (actually, I know, since I am a teen girl) that Jewel actually makes girls feel better about themselves. Imagine looking through a typical seventeen magazine, seeing one perfect, skinny, model after the next and thinking that your perfectly average and healthy sized body is fat. Then, you see a picture of a girl who probably weighs about 30 pounds more than every other girl in the magazine, but is more beautiful than all of them combined. She is more beautiful because she is imperfect, she is normal, she doesn't torture herself to try and stay stick thin. This girl is Jewel. And Jewel shows us what true beauty is. *hugs* Emily ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 01:50:04 -0400 (EDT) From: Rutabaga Subject: Re: NJC: What Exactly Would All Of You Do For A Klondike Bar? The EDA Foundation is being worked on long and hard by some of the list veterans who want to hear from all the rest of us EDAs about our ideas and abilities to help make this project work. The ONLY thing I've tried to do to help out in my way is to hopefully find an organized way, using this unique medium of the internet, to encourage us to crystallize our thoughts and ideas collectively so it's easier to understand what it will mean. And that really just involves getting the topic in heavy rotation (sort of like calling the radio to play WWSYS, or YWMFM or Foolish Games). All EDAs are working together and the EDAF project never went away -- we just stopped talking about it here. Now it's about to happen it's really good that we're all discussing it again so that the input of each and every EDA can be considered. I just finished reading "Little > Birds" by Anais Nin...and my friend finished the book I suggested "Still Life > With Woodpecker" by Tom Robbins (GREAT BOOK!) So, I decided to ask the > list...what is your favorite book? Tell me a little about it! Hmmm, that's an awfully hard questions, bibliophilic considerations aside, it would have to be a favourite-book-this-second type of decision... And that would likely be a tie :-) both Gabriel Garcia Marquez though... There's a really neat collection of short stories called: Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Collected Novellas ... my favourite of which is "No One Writes to the Colonel", the ending is a bit crappy :-) but I really love the way the story flows. "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" is a pretty darn good read too. Oh, oh I almost forgot "Leaf Storm" which is fantastic... ...these stories are hard to describe, they all contain elements of magic realism; bits and pieces of magic in a realistic setting that under other circumstances might tend towards the apocryphal, but to the characters seem perfectly normal. (Some of my favourite Canadian authors tend to borrow this invention as well... ...mainly Robert Kroetsch who is mondo cool! check out _The_Studhorse_Man_, _Alibi_ and _What_The_Crow_Said_. He's probably my favourite serious, literary-genre author... ...he's a contemporary of Michael Ondaatje (of _The_English_ _Patient_ fame, though I like _The_Collected_Works_of_Billy_the_Kid_ much better.)... see I can't pick _just_ one or three or four!) The other is a similar volume, same publisher called: Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Collected Stories ... "The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Erendira and Her Heartless Grandmother" is great... ...its funny in that almost surreal magic-realism sort of way. So those two are my current favs... (well...and the Kroetsch ones too... :-) :-) ) I'm going to stop now before I recommend yet another book :-) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- And I, infinitesmal being, drunk with the great starry void, likeness, image of mystery, I felt myself a pure part of the abyss, I wheeled with the stars, my heart broke loose on the wind. - Poetry, Pablo Neruda ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 11:51:53 -0400 (EDT) From: CONNELL@taurus.cs.lmco.com Subject: RE: JC: Unplugged and Farm Aid Mike G wrote: > Just wanted to let everyone know that Unplugged will be repeated July > 1st @ 8:00pm EST. I am assuming Mike G. meant the Jewel Unplugged. I may be wrong, but I believe this is not true. (Check your local listings to verify....I think it's NOT the Jewel one) Unplugged is a weekly feature on MTV on Tuesdays for the summer, with a new artist each week. I think this one on July 1 (tomorrow) is the new one, and if I heard the comercials right, this week it may be the Wallflowers. Anyone check the MTV web site to verify??? A woman's worth is only partly defined by the way she looks, BUT the way she looks is the first step. Ask yourself who you'd rather chat with at a party- a well dressed person who appears to have their stuff together, or a guy who's wearing rags, appears drunk, smells horrible, and is holding a 40 of Old English? This is an extreme example, obviously, but appearance does matter. As for a question of beauty- it's in the eye of the beholder, and sometimes not even then. It's always in CONTROL of the individual- you can control to a great extent how "beautiful" you appear to be- it's called kyojitsu tenkan ho in Japanese, the process by which you can change how you appear by doing very little. Just spend time acting and working with folks in theatre or acting. The best actors I've ever met and seen are people who actually submerge their own identities beneath those of their characters- becoming their characters, as it were. As for music, I have the distinct impression that very few people in general have any idea of what people look like. I could have sworn that the lead of Dave Mathews Band and John Popper (Blues Traveller) would have looked identical when I first heard their premiere singles out. Only a few subtle nuances to Popper's voice give you any indication of what he might look like. Besides, most people sleepwalk through life on autopilot anyway. Looking at Jewel's body is a lot easier for these people than actually having to listen carefully to her message- and then making the resulting changes that come from that kind of message. I for one am fortunate that my own personal mission and her message are nearly synonymous. Saves a great deal of time. One last thing to keep in mind is that watching Jewel is almost as important as listening. If you get a hold of the MTV unplugged tape, watch the various emotions and mental states that move across her face while she's singing. Watch how her breathing changes when she moves from her head voice to her chest voice. It's an amazing thing, it is." I may have just said "feminism strikes us" but this is what I meant.
