I mean, if every EDA helped out a kid that had fallen off his bike on the side of the road wouldn't that be impressive? As a formal organization, the EDAF could alienate itself a bit from the mainstream. A lot of people don't want to join any "groups" or "organizations". However, I believe they still have the will to do good. So if each EDA did good things, sometimes banding together with other EDAs, wouldn't that be more of an infectious goodness than if we were an official organization? Just a thought. Lenedra just sent me a message to forward to you all. Read on & enjoy. Best wishes, Alan(MrBB) Hello all, Yesterday we shot the new video for 'Foolish Games' and I thought you would enjoy a note about that. It was with director Matthew Rolston who shot her photos for Rolling Stone. He was very excited to do this because it would be a departure from his previous videos, a change he was looking forward to making. It was shot on an outdoor location in the hilltops in Browns Canyon about an hour and a half from LA, on Boyle Ranch. The shoot began early with hair and makeup on site at 7am. Fog engulfed the mountain top and shooting didnt begin until about 10am. It was a hot high grassland sort of terrain. Trailers for wardrobe, production, makeup, etc. were brought in and a Winnebago for Jewel. Several semi trucks were there with equipment, full crew and catering making a rather large group on the hilltop. A knoll was prepared as the set: tons of black sand was brought in, and combined with charred trees and some cactus created a miminal terrain with a sort of Hawiaan volcano feel. Jewel had many scenes singing in front of a scrim--a sort of hanging net. She was wearing a black net dress with a cream colored under dress. This was all under a large three sided tent that opened to the net and landscape, but kept Jewel and crew and equipment in the shade. There was also shots of a very beautiful black horse, some with Jewel riding it. In addition she worked in some scenes with a body double whose name was Amy. In these scenes they alternated between the black net dress and a similar one in white sheer with non sheer under dress. Sometimes Amy was in the white one and sometimes Jewel was. Amy will write a paragraph about her experience and send it to me so that I can send it on to you. Jewel wanted some figures in kimonos as well, so there are three women in black robes who add an unusual Oriental touch. I wont spoil the fun by being more descriptive. It will be on TV by July 15 I think. By the way, though it will say Batman video in the credits, no Batman footage was used. "I didn't think anybody would come," she trills unconvincingly. This is a woman whose first album has sold close on five million in the United States. She has seen too many people pack out places she's never heard of over the past four years to be surprised at another crowd. Jewel pauses, her tone more measured: "We are small, but we are mighty," she says, addressing her embryonic British fan base. Somehow this sounds more honest. "We are small but we are mighty" is very Jewel. For a minute, I wonder where she has picked up this aphorism - the Bible, maybe? I ask a couple of people and they say it's new to them. A whisper goes round that REM's Michael Stipe is here at the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden, north London, to see Alaskan-born Jewel. She's wearing a sexy blue top and someone tells me she's also wearing a sexy little skirt, but I'm damned if I can see. She's done her hair up prettily, and is looking very Jennifer Aniston. Hours earlier, 22 year-old Jewel was sitting on a posh central London hotel bed, again the queen of all she surveys. Her hair falls straight down, lashing her checked trousers and cowboy boots; her funny cleft tooth is prominent, and pockets of puppy fat poke out of her tight sweater. If she were older and a man, you would talk about her love handles. "My initial goal was 30,000", she says. We're talking about the album, Pieces of You, a terrific collection of self-penned songs about love and hope, anger and wasted lives, bigotry and redemption. She has been compared with Joni Mitchell and Suzanne Vega, although Rickie Lee Jones is nearer the mark. "At the back of my mind I thought a big success would be 100,000." I say this shows great self belief - if I were to make a record I would expect a couple of friends and my mum to buy it. "Oh, no that was very humble of me - 30,000 is nothing." Like all singer-songwriters, Jewel trades on her sincerity. "When I am criticized, I'm criticized for who I am. It's not that every song is about my life, but I am honest about what I do. I'm not trying to come on as a cool person," she says, kicking a cowboy boot in the air for emphasis. But sincerity and marketing are not mutually exclusive. Back at the Mean Fiddler, she plays a clever game. She says she has been reading Zen and The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance. Her voice has a slightly affected, coquettish touch of Marilyn Monroe. Every time her car broke down, she says, she interpreted it as Bad Karma, an indication that her soul was out of sorts. The name-check is a neat way of introducing her life story. The Jewel fact sheet, provided by her record company, eastwest (lower case E), tells us that she was born in Alaska, "with very few luxuries" - no TV, no shower, no running water, baths once a week if she was lucky. After graduating on a vocal scholarship in Michigan, she moved to San Diego and lived in a van. So we get the Zen story, by the end of which we understand the importance of motor cars, are invited to share the spiritualism that teeters on New Age daffiness and also realize she's self-aware enough to wink at her belief-systems. Actually, the fact sheet doesn't convey half the fullness of Jewel's life. When her parents divorced, she went to live with her father, who taught her how to yodel. Then he began to drink too much and got mean, so she moved in with her mother, a failed singer, who taught her how to exist on scraps. Somewhere in the middle she got herself adopted by an Indian family. Jewel was dyslexic, but became a voracious reader, learning to trick her disability by reading the shapes between the letters. When she left school she worked, miserably, in a cafe, picking up the leftovers from customers' plates, going without pills when she was ill, which often was due to a long-term kidney condition. "I was living in an apartment with my Mom, and I wouldn't spend any money on toothpaste or food, I'd pay my last five dollars' rent in change. My life got so crappy that I had to say "OK, I stay in there forever and drown myself, or is change possible, hope possible? Where do I want to focus my energies?" At which point, Jewel, then 18, decided to concentrate on music. "For me it was the ultimate happiness, saying, 'OK, I'm dropping out of the world, I'm not going to exist anymore if that's what existence means, I'm just going to do what I love, what makes me feel I can face every waking, conscious day.'" She got herself the second-hand van and moved into it. Meanwhile, her mother also got herself a live-in van and parked it nearby. Jewel says she suddenly rediscovered how to be happy. In one of her poems on her album sleeve, "Upon Moving Into My Van," she writes: "Grumpy old men/have wings/Burns sport haloes/And everyday dullness/has begun to breathe/as I remember the/incredible lightness/of living". A few months later she signed a record contract, was spotted by Sean Penn, had a year-long affair with him and allowed him to nurture her talent. Her mother became her manager as the record started selling in 1995, and she was asked to open for Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Johnny Cash. Jewel - Jewel Kilcher if you must know - has a good way with words. When I ask her about her influences, she doesn't mention folk or country or pop stars. "I'd have to say Ella Fitzgerald, Cole Porter and Pablo Neruda." Neruda, who's he? "Only one of the greatest poets known to man." She runs through his political life in Chile for my benefit, before telling me that poetry is music. Has her dyslexia been a handicap? "Most genius people are dyslexic. Einstein was dyslexic, Jefferson was, Roosevelt. It's great company, I'm hardly worthy" - but you don't trust her diffidence. A few of the songs from the album are syrupy and naive. Most are lovely and moving. "Who Will Save Your Soul," a massive hit in the U.S., is like so much of her work, about finding redemption in a mucky world of easy temptations. Just as she seems in danger of being swamped by the prissily evangelical, she sings songs raging against bigotry, longing for sexual abandon ("My how you remind me of a man I used to sleep with/That's a face I'd never forget/You can be Henry Miller and I'll be Anais Nin") and vengeance ("Sometimes I want to bash in your teeth daddy/Gonna use your tongue as a stamp/Gonna rip your heart out the way you did mine, daddy/Go ahead and psychoanalyze that"). At their best, her lyrics - dialogues often - echo the literature of America's South, like a nascent Carson McCullers. Jewel is not a great guitarist. It often sounds as if she's broken a string, even though she hasn't. So it comes as a relief when she prepares us for a guest. Jewel's mother looks lovely, like an older sister, as she's supposed to in the old-fashioned way of things. When they put their heads together to duet, it's difficult to tell them apart and they burst out laughing. Whereas Jewel has incredible range, her mother's voice is that of a tired, beaten-down angel. She sings the song she used to lullaby her daughter to sleep with. It's about flying - "because Jewel always wanted to fly as a child, without touching the ground." The marketing people must love mom and her metaphors. We talk about her life and Jewel is now bored, yawning. She may not yet be well known, but she expects to be soon - - so interviews are already formalized hotel junkets. Every minute I take beyond the customary half-hour she seems to regard as an impertinence. Does she still see Sean Penn? "That's none of your business." Is he a nice man? "Uhm." He's terribly talented, isn't he? "I like him a lot that way. He's a great writer, a great director." How did she get on with Dylan? "Fine. What's your point?" She tells me how solitary she is and I suggest it's easier being alone when you know you don't have to be. "What's your question?" It's obvious she has no interest in answering questions, so I ask her what she'd like to talk about, and she launches into a Billy Graham type of mission statement. "I thought you had to be slick and produced to be popular. All the stuff you've seen on TV - I've never been really good at that. I'm a phenomenon, and that's a very strange situation to be in. "My songs could have died in my car and I could have gone back to being a waitress, and the only thing that brought a change in my life was when I insisted the world shape itself around my conviction. We should not spend and waste our time, our flesh and our creativity, on survival. It's a waste of time." I ask her if that is a quote and she looks confused and gives a terse "No." It must have been frightening as a youngster on the road, having to rely on the comfort of strangers, being so far from home. I ask if she was ever scared, and she gives such a strange single-minded answer. "Yes, there was a lot at stake. What if I was wasting my youth on a career that didn't work out?" Why has she not made another album since Pieces Of You? "Because it took this long to make this one work. For three years I've toured 40 cities every 30 days." Isn't she exhausted? "Yes, it's tiring and I'd like a break ... but this is what I'm made for." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jun 1997 10:22:03 -0700 From: christa edwards Subject: Re: MRBB-LENEDRA message-NEW Foolish Games video YAY!! Then came the = Wallflowers - blah blah blah. And, of course, Jewel followed after = almost an hour delay since she wasn't supposed to be there until 5:30 = and everyone else was running ahead of schedule. Tien and I made our = way down in front of the stage and found Derrick and Ashe. We lost = everyone else along the way - ya gotta know how to push your way through = or you'll never make it. :) Actually, I think push and shove were the = key words for the day. Anyway, Jewel took the stage and opened with = POY. She satisfied the guys' hormonal urges afterward by taking off her = jacket - which led to more "Take it off" chants, which Jewel gracefully = ignored. Since Mia already posted the set list, I won't bother. I do = want to mention, though, that I absolutely loved the "rockin" version of = YWMFM - the crowd definitely got into it. And Jewel handled the crowd = quite well!! After experiencing crowd surfing, public urination, and = just about everything else possible, Tien and I headed back to the grass = to watch the rest of the bands. Tien's post pretty well sums up the = rest of the night, so I'll leave that part out, except for one thing. = We met two of the sweetest girls, Angel and Stacy, while we were sitting = there on our blanket watching the video screen of the performance. I = believe they both went to the University of Memphis (Tien, correct me if = I'm wrong) and were both public relations majors. We hung with them for = the rest of the show (No Doubt and Bush) and attempted to protect each = other from the barrage of flying bottles, cans, coolers, chairs, = fireworks, etc. It was interesting watching people climbing the border = fence since the exit/entrance line was so long. After the show, we said = goodbye to Angel and Stacy and headed back to the campsite. After a = failed attempt at leaving to join everyone else at Lake Grapevine, we = decided to crash and leave the next morning. After some initial = confusion, we finally found Farr, etc. and Eric, Steve, and I decided to = stay and hang out with them some more since we probably wouldn't see = those guys for quite a while. We weathered through a typical TX = thunderstorm, enjoyed some FARR-jitas, played frisbee, and watched two = ducks do the wild thing (did anyone get pics of that?). Eric, Steve, = and I eventually left and headed to Arkansas to meet up with Kate, = Christina, Brian, and Jason for some camping. We eventually made it to = Lake Catherine SP sometime around midnight. We crashed for the night = and then headed for Natchez Trace SP in Tennessee the next morning. We = arrived at Natchez later that afternoon, sometime around 6 I believe and = met up again with Kate and Christina, etc. who had just arrived before = us. We found a campsite and settled down for the evening. The next = morning, (after doing some laundry), we departed and headed for the = other end of TN and Smoky Mts. National Forest. Earlier, I had gotten a = call from Jen (JenBug57), who lives in Nashville, TN. Since we were = going to be driving through Nashville on our way to Smoky Mts. National = Forest and we weren't going to miss a chance to meet a fellow EDA, we = decided to stop by and say hi. Well, we ended up staying instead for = the next two days. What happened during those two days will follow in = the next post. Miles" Subject: njc: Rockfest and more!! (part 3 - aka Jenfest and Tarafest) Ok, so we (Eric, Steve, and I) meet up with JenBug at a Taco Bell in = Nashville and follow her back to her place. There we hung out for a = while and talked and got to know each other. Chelsea called from = Colorado, so we all talked for a while (I miss ya madly Chelsbabe - = sorry we weren't there when ya called back!) We ordered some pizza for = dinner (thanks Eric!). Afterward, we headed out to Tower Records to = check out some cd's. Eric managed to get his hands on the last copy of = the Rugburns "Taking the World By Donkey" - you lucky dog!). I picked = up "Mommy I'm Sorry" and Patty Griffin's "Living With Ghosts". While = there, Jen notices that Tara Maclean is playing at a local bar called = the Exit/In opening up for Ron Sexsmith. So, we decide to go see her. We arrive at the bar, but they wouldn't let Steve in b/c he didn't have = a driver's license for ID. So, we sat out front and pondered the = possiblity of finding Tara before the show so we could at least buy a = copy of her cd. So, Eric goes back inside and attempts to try to find = out if anyone knew where Tara was hiding (she had actually walked in = right in front of us and nobody recognized her!). So, Eric gets in = touch with Ron Sexsmith's manager/representative, who takes us around = back to the backstage entrance, where we meet Tara and Dave (her = manager)!! We introduce ourselves to Tara and Dave, and tell them that = we're EDA's etc. Tara graciously offers to play a song for us just in = case we couldn't sneak Steve into the show. We all gather around and = listen to her play a beautiful song called "If Only", which she said was = going to be her opening song for the show. We all sat there completely = absorbed by the beauty of the song and of Tara - she's an amazing = musician with an absolutely beautiful voice. Afterward, she signed our = cd's (she signed mine "My smallest concert ever! Love and Light, Tara = xo"). Thanks to Dave and Tara, Steve was able to get in when Tara went = onstage. Tara played a beautiful 8-song set of mostly material from her = debut cd "Silence". My favorite was her last song - an acapella version = of Silence. After the show, Tara and Dave came up to us and we said our = goodbyes since they had to get back to the hotel before a 5 a.m. drive = to Atlanta the next morning. They thanked us for coming, and we thanked = them for all that they had done for us that evening. We stuck around = for part of Ron's set, but then headed back to Jen's place to watch the = tapes of Rockfest and Unplugged, and of course, chat on AOL/IRC. The = next morning we got up, ate breakfast courtesy of Jen, and began our = journey into downtown Nashville. We visited a used cd store, a guitar = store, Planet Hollywood, and ate lunch at Hard Rock Cafe. We then went = back to Jen's and hopped into the pool for some much needed refreshment. = Afterward, we hung around, chatted some more on IRC, ate some cookies, = once again courtesy of Jen, and then crashed since we all had to get up = early. The next morning, after saying our goodbyes to Jen (goodbyes = suck!), we hopped in the car and departed for PA, arriving sometime = around 9 p.m. Eric and Steve departed for NY/NJ shortly thereafter, = arriving home safe and sound sometime around midnight or so. And so = ends our extremely fun-filled week of excitement. It was great to see = everyone again (Farr, Mia, Dan) and to meet some new friends (Jessica, = Jen, Ashe, Derrick, Bill, Carrie, Tien, Angela). If I've left anyone = out, I sincerely apologize, as it was quite a week! Now to go unpack, = clean the car, etc. Tom :) - -- "Just let the elevator door close one more time" - ChelsStock '97 "Soulmates are forever" "Goodbyes are only temporary, for in our hearts we are always together" "I'm gonna take the time to show you I'm a friend" - Blessed Union of = Souls "My smallest concert ever!" - Tara Maclean "We are EveryDay Angels, be careful with me 'cause I'd like to stay that = way" - Jewel Thomas N.
