Brian, I am concerned about your exposure to the Beatles. You don't know any songs they sing? How very very sad. I strongly encourage you to take a moment to listen to the perfection that is the Beatles. They are (IMHO) the greatest band of this century. They are still ahead of their time. They are ageless. Please listen to them! Fellow Beatles fans, PLEASE support me on this. It was Jewel and the Beatles that inspired me to play guitar. The Beatles also inspired my dad to play guitar. Hey Eda's-- You guys are probably sick of seeing this, but yes I'm a newbie. I've been on for a couple weeks and finally figured out how to post, thank you Zach! I saw Jewel in concert for the first time April 4 at UC San Diego. I loved it! Like each one of you, Jewel's moved me in a way no other artist has in a VERY long time. I'm trying to adopt her positivity, but it's difficult for me I won't give up though. I'm not so much a cynic on the surface but deep inside I'm just down about a lot of things. Don't you guys think, though, her songs on Pieces of You are just depressing??? Sometimes I have to stop myself from playing her CD, cuz it gets me moody. Anyways! Irvine Lilith Fair July 9th, is there still going to be a gathering the next day at some beach? I would love to meet EDA SoCal'ers. Also, can someone e-mail me the lyrics and guitar tab to My Own Private God's Gift to Women to me? I have a Real audio file of it, and i can barely make out the lyrics, much less the story she tells about it. You guys are a powerful group and I'm looking forward to being part of it. It was big. So was the parking lot. Friday: Call in sick. Pack. Start on my 4 hour drive. 4 hours later (about 3 oclock): ARRIVE!!! YEAH! Next 2 hours: Search for EDA HQ. After not finding it I park a meer twenty yards from it. 5 o'clock: Line Up, Tailgate time! 5:45 : Get in the raceway and try to spot edas. (While searching, listening to awesome music provided by Duncan Shiek, 10,000 maniacs, Nixons, others... totally awesome) 9: Go watch Duncan talk to AJ from VH1 about touring and I talk to AJ about the 5 days left on his contract. Bummer. (Ten cheers to anyone who knows what sitcom AJ was on before VH1). 10pm: This is where the 19yr. old boy part took over and the EDA part was taken hostage. I've heard the next few hours summed up as a riot but I don't think it was anywhere close to that. 10-7am: Forklifts, dumptrucks, mud, people, t-shirts, bared skin, stripped cars, flying bottles, loud music, an occasional policeman, more mud, search for edas (yeah right), and on and on. 7am Friday: Time to line up again already??? Inside the Raceway: The BIG DAY!! With the REALLY big crowd. Some said about 350k, definately more than 300k. Absolutely hugeymungoso. I drank 6.5 liters of water that day. I needed it. About 6pm: Jewel is incredible! This was the first time I'd seen her live and I loved almost every minute of it. Why not all of it you ask? Cuz there were some major sound problems that needed to be worked out during the cello part, massive reverb that drowned out everything else. Yet Jewel looked awesome in those shorts (hey, what can I say). I was really surprised to see how well YWMFM could be rocked up. Very upbeat Very cool. Heard STIBTW for the first time, cool too. After Jewel: Go back to the car and lo 'n behold, EDAHQ!! Not more than twenty yards from were I parked!! How in the world could I have missed it???? Ribbons everywhere! And EDA cars too! Man, I am blind. I meet the others who made their way back after Jewel (Hey Crashboy, make it home ok?) Chat and chat some more. It was great to finally meet some of you guys/gals face to face. Sorry I didn't make it to the lake but I had fun anyway. Two hours later: Time to go back in. Counting Crows are playing, cool. I make my way up to about the 30th row before they quit. Standing room only. Crowd-surfers everywhere. You would think that girls would learn that certain events are a given when they decide to crowd surf. Surfer-Beware! I sqeeze my way to the third row before No Doubt hit the stage. Squished like a squished thing between two things that are squishing it. It sucked yet rocked at the same time. No Doubt ruled, Gwen really knows how to get the crowd invovled. Lose my glasses. Yup, sure did. About this time I decide to call it quits and head back out to the parking lot. I make it back and notice a very large presence of off-duty police officers there, no party tonight folks. Fall asleep in my car and wake up around 6:30 to the sound of really heavy rain all around me. Cool I can sleep in this, WAIT, rain + dirt = MUD!! Sure enough my car has begun to sink so I spin my wheels trying to get out. I do. Go back to sleep on the asphalt parking lot. Wake up at about 10:00 and decide it's time to head home. Go back to sleep and wake up at 12. Start on my way home. Is it over? NO! Just outside of Wichita Falls a rear-end collision happens not 50 feet in front of me at 70 miles an hour. I swerve off into the median and go sideways for about 50 yards before I can correct and pull back onto the road. Nasty. I'm so freaked out I don't even think about stopping to see if anyone was hurt. Oh, well. I've collected about 10 pounds of seeds/weeds in various places around my car which I clean out at the next McDonalds. Luckily the rest of the trip was not even half as eventful. I had a good time and thanks to everyone that showed up to make RockFest the biggest one day music event in Rock HISTORY!! WooHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Goodnight. That's Jewel. I'm still having trouble defining "creative" to my satisfaction, but I think this is the commonly used sense of "original" that we're trying to express. >Poltz observed that Jewel, >because she wasn't schooled in the standard songwriting and guitar-playing >tradition, was able to bring an original perspective to her lyric writing >and song structure. There's the missing link. "In silence we create ourselves", right? I agree that whatever Jewel has created, she has done by writing music un-influenced by external stimuli (other music). If she has truly innovated, it's in her writing by feel rather than by rote. Steve mentioned this to me when we talked briefly in Toledo. He counterbalanced her undisciplined but fresh writing style with his traditional one, and some fresh songs were the result. >But does adding a string, or >electricity, or synthesizing something really mean it's original? Or is it >just carrying on tradition with the latest available apparatus or >technology -- whether that means the mouth-bow or the loop sample? >Something like Tricky's trip-hop music may be considered innovative or >original by short term definitions, but it's likely that, in a way, someone >in Africa or New Guinea or Iceland or somewhere, some long time ago, was >doing the equivalent on whatever stones or wire or whatever they had >available. Exactly what I had in mind. Jewel is trying to express herself, and she is constrained to using currently available instruments. So she has expressed, by lyric and tone, her thoughts as best she is able. Her thought processes and method of committing them to music may be the spark that we recognize as her "signature" of originality. >I'd choose a timeless length of cycle in >viewing originality as an expression of the soul rather than as the >adaptation of the latest development in an increasingly technologically >inventive age. An artist, such as Jewel, with the ability to communicate >soul-to-soul has found, or reconnected with the original, the universal, >language. And I can't add anything to that, except to say that I am humbled by a much better choice of words than I achieved. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | And all you touch and all you see | | gregdunn@indy.net | Is all your life will ever be. | | GregDunn@aol.com | Pink Floyd | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jun 1997 01:53:55 -0400 From: bizmarquee@juno.com (Tony K Tran) Subject: Re:Subjection We all, in a matter of a fact, have met Jewel through her music!! I just want to share some more info that Akira left out or did not know. Lenedra told me: 1) It turns out that Hiranya's computer has taken the byg byte and died. So until she gets a new computer or the old one fixed, DO NOT EMAIL HIRANYA until she posts again. For those of you that have been faxing her about JewelStock t-shirt designs etc, it is OK (I assume) to continue with that, but do not expect a response. I will ask Lenedra tomorrow to convey to me any more on that subject and/or if I can act as that contact for you JewelStock t-shirters. If you guys are done with that, let me know and I won't bother. Lenedra has given us two phone numbers, one in Bearsville and one in San Diego, so we now have a direct link to Jewel for info/concerns on this event. 2) Jewel says she does not mind if alcohol is served, but the TOP priority is that under age people be allowed in the venue, so alcohol would be ruled out if it meant no unders otherwise. 3) There is a rehersal hall at the studio that we just might be able to use as the venue, so cost would = almost zero, but food and refreshments would be a concern we would have to take care of/arrange. So we may need volunteers to work shifts in that area, but I'll let you know more about that after more is decided on that. 4) While Alan Bershaw (sp?) will be doing the audio recording, many of you have expressed a query about video. Lenedra will discuss with Jewel about the possibility of a video recording of the show, but they would likely want owners rights to the original copy if permission is granted. So, anyone who already expressed an interest in handling that chore, PLEASE get back to me again. If Lenedra and/or Jewel OK's video, I'll ask Lenedra if she wants to choose the person or leave it up to us. 5) As Akira said, the likely date(s) will be July 17th (Wednesday), or the 18th. The event will be very near Woodstock NY. 6) Time of the show: To be determined, will ask Lenedra tomorrow if they have ANY idea as to that. As I said, at the moment, my ducksoup@spectra.net address is down, but anyone EMAILing me, PLEASE continue to send EMAILs there, but please CC those EMAILs to this address duckofprey@aol.com for the time being, as a back up. As Akira said, Lenedra said Jewel is looking forward to this VERY much, she wants to give. That alone shows what a special person she is. I saw them live twice: once at Shea Stadium in New York (on their first US tour) once at Municiple Stadium in Cleveland I'd recommend starting off with "Rubber Soul" (to me this is when the Beatles started getting interesting). It's also around the time that Bob Dylan chastised them for having the ear of the world and saying nothing. The lyrics took on a new dimension with "Rubber Soul". "Revolver" was awesome. Now they're in *high* gear! ;-) Of course "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band" is one of the five most important rock albums of all time. It blew the mind's of people all over the world and pop music was never the same afterwards. "Magical Mystery Tour" is wonderful also. After that the Beatles began to fall apart as a band but musically there are still gems in the folowing albums: "The White Album" "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" Enjoy, Kris Kane _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ "Everything is holy! everybody's holy! everywhere is holy! everyday is in eternity! Yeah Ryan, you see, i could have acted harshly at what Tessa wrote, but i know her and she's a dork in many ways so its not her fault :-P (i'm gonna get it for that one) >I think Nathan said it best... I live in Irvine, but I'm not going to Lilith Fair (because I'm a minor and my parents won't let me) so I was thinking ... Perhaps, if any of you EDA's who will be arriving in Irvine _before_ the 9th, would any of you be interested in having a little, mini gathering at the hottest place in town (aka the 'Irvine Spectrum')? It's a great 'tourist' attraction with lots to do for everyone of all ages and stuff. :) There is a huge movie theater with 21 theaters and an IMAX. Plus an arcade (Sega City) and lots of different restaurants. It's a great place to hang out! :o) Oh, and it doesn't cost any money to get in. We can wander around all day. :) However, there _is_ a dress code, but it's not too strict. It was just a thought because I really hate to think that I'm losing the chance to meet you sweet people in real life. =) If anyone is interested, please e-mail me at romarch@juno.com. Maybe we all can arrange something, hopefully. =) Love you all to kibbles and bits, Sharon :o) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jun 1997 04:06:19 EDT From: romarch@juno.com (Grape Woman) Subject: Getting to know you survey :) NAME: Sharon Pham AGE: 17 WHERABOUTS: Irvine, CA (right between Los Angeles and San Diego) DO YOU GO TO SCHOOL, AND IF SO, WHERE?
