For starters, I understand that this is just your opinion, but I can't understand some of the judgements. A lot of your "new innovators" I would put in the other category. And vice versa. Look at Alanis Morrisette. Understandably, she is not necessarily so original as Jewel, but there must be millions of people out there who think she's not bad....how many more albums has she sold than ANY other female musician? And Nirvana...I was never particularly their fan, but I have to respect them. Yes, Bush is a clone, but Nirvana was more original. Who are the Wallflowers a clone of? Or do you think they are "just plain bad"? They have worked really hard to get where they are, trying to overcome their singer's heritage. I don't even like Paula Cole, but I don't think she's that awful. I just think that you are too quick to judge these people....didn't you expect this reaction, though? sarah p.s. I'm not trying to flame you, just your categorizing techniques. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 1997 14:07:20 -0400 From: Crunch Subject: List Memories : 6/21/96 ************************************************************************* * PLEASE note that this is a repost of e-mail * * * that was sent to Jewel@smoe exactly * Questions? * * ONE YEAR AGO today. You guys are beautiful people in your own special way, and I love each and every one of you for it, I am gonna share a couple poems with you, because I know I can, without you seeing me differently, Thank you, for reading, and please tell me what you think. I Know I know we make mistakes I know everyone wishes they could do it over Everyone hurts And I know you lie countless times to yourself and me Love is taken for granted by many Yet sometimes not taken at all I don't know why yet I do I know we hide behind masquerade masks hoping not to recognize ourselves We play hide and seek with our dreams Hoping not to find true meaning We just spin together in a circle till it all falls down and crashes amoungst us But it just builds up again, each of us another block that creates things which are never finished, just rebuilt over and over over and over falling and crashing crashing and falling hate and love love and hate lies and truth truth and lies Tears help nothing...they just lead us deeper into something we are not ever ready to jump into, Though you are knee deep in yourself Okies, that is one, here is another one, it's kind of lame but, it had a nice water color I drew and stuff so why not. Where I Go River through the trees, The suns' reflection shining through your mirror I splash through your water of life with you currents rushing through my heart Your stream so fresh and pure like a daisy in recluse on a hill Never picked, never touched. This earth I sit on as I peer into your mirror I realize now your the closest thing I ever want to be near. this next one was written for two of my friends that have passed away, This is dedicated to Brittany and Eric. This was written when I was in a depressing mood so please don't think I am gonna up and kill myself. Where Did You Go Where did you go beautiful angel beautiful soul Fragile faces lay on soft cushions so soft so pure so dead, dead You died you left me you died you hurt me me, should've been me Swallowed into death eaten by truth absorbed in your death I died with you with you you're alone like me, like me desserted, nowhere to turn deadend... brickwall Ok, now here is another one, I think it's really good, my friend wrote it, it's neat, I really liked it. Written On The Stationary Lover under a tree talking of the furture the past and the present A kiss a goodbye a farewell an often "I love you" What changes when change is hard Tears on a pillow as a letter being written by a stone soul a tear falls the ink bleeds; as a broken heart bleeds A fractured heart is like a... peddle from a rose falling to the ground; being forgotten as the rose grows and as the noses come to smell the rose; but that pettle forgotten a broken heart The walk home the cool breeze carressing pure, young skin as the fear the sorrow and the feeling of something happening sets in Who chose the harder path when the easy path is right there A thought comes it stays A empty hand reaches gets a sheet of stationary and a pen from a desk begin; began; to write a tear falls letter deform A lick of a stamp The opening of the letter Every feeling written on the stationary I like that a lot, here is a small one. [Untitled] The body is the soul's costume This next one is kinda embarrassing, but I wrote it last night, before I went to sleep and I hope that special person knows who it is for, it's kinda cheesy but *shrug* oh well. Touch How I long to feel Your fingers along my skin Or your sweet lips be one with mine The sweet taste of "I love you" in my ears. To feel your tongue moisten my lips Or your touch along my breast. For the love we have is sacred. For you have my heart. Our love is everlasting. and I will love you forever. and even more when we are apart. Told you heehee can we say "cheese" heehee ok, ummm I got one more, that's only cause I don't wanna annoy. You The waves that once rushed through my soul are no longer there Though I still have the sand between my toes I'm not there The flame you lite has burnt out The clown was I another attraction for you to view I gave you myself and you had me You told me lies, and I recieved them. Yes, you told me bullshit, and I believe it. I loved you despite your fingers like knives along my back The dried tears I wept as you scoughed at me. Your glare showed me nothing. You took my hand and led me down the path only to disappear. Ok, please tell me honestly, what you think, I would really appreciate it. I love you all. Peace and Love And Flowers. Nothing personal to anyone, my vehemence is directed at the principles, not the people. >Why is it that people today are so fascinated by death and sickness and >pain? I'm fascinated with death. How can you be living and NOT be? It doesn't mean I'm Goth Boy or anything. I'm just interested in the human condition. Not so odd, considering I happen to be one. >Being an EDA is, in my opinion, making a commitment to all that is good in the >>world. Posts like this are shocking and repulsive. So is the six o'clock news. The post in question was pointless, and complete bullshit, but actually rather good reading. I also enjoy horror movies. Are they "repulsive"? Many could be considered so. Oh, well, guess I'm a sick person. >I don't know who sent that or whatever but I think that it >is unsuitable to be read. I think we should be looking at the good things >on life and trying to stop the bad, instead of glamorizing them in >Hollywood and with letters like that. I get very tired of the way in which the movies and TV are portrayed as being responsible for our society's faults. They are first and foremost the OUTPUT of society. Where do you think they get these stories? Real life. Why should we write happy, clean and graceful? All the best movies are about pain, anguish and sorrow, at least in part. Look at The Sound of Music. The ultimate in happy movies, right. By the way, the Von Trapps were running from the Nazis and the surety of horrible deaths. Without that fact, you have "Do, a deer, a female deer." Gee, that's clever. Could you hand me that shotgun? My point is that to only look at the good is naive. To stop the bad, you must first get the message out that it is happening. Look at Tibet. Rage was blasted for putting a burning monk on their album cover. Why don't we blast China instead? The attempted genocide of an entire ethnic group isn't as repulsive as a picture? If it's bad, say so, but unless someone is being hurt by something, don't give me that hackneyed offensive bit. Sorry for the length and the angst-ridden tone. - --Josh, the super-liberal first amendment angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jun 1997 16:33:26, -0500 From: HCCZ70C@prodigy.com ( SARAH MERRITT) Subject: get to know ME Everyone else is filling these out......I'm such a follower... You see, I've enjoyed the Batman films, especially "Batman Forever," with the inspired choice of Jim Carrey as the villain (his best role to date), and with some more interesting actors cast as villains in this film -- Arnold Schwartzneggar and Uma Thurman -- I didn't think it could go wrong. How sadly I was mistaken. Director Joel Schumaker -- a decent but quite hammy filmmaker -- knows it was the villains that propelled the first three films. Jack Nicholson ran away with the original, Michelle Pfieffer was by far the best thing about "Batman Returns," and Carrey was splendid in "Batman Forever." However, Schumaker uses his villains more in this film than in any of the other, and, unfortunately, the result just sinks. Most culpable is Ah-nuld, who does the worst job I have ever seen an actor do in any role in any film. He's a distracting mess, playing please-quote-me Mr. Freeze as a straw that sucks life out of the film whenever he shows up. Uma Thurman fares better, but not nearly enough. Her character threatens to bring the film to respectability when she appears, but she begins to grate as the film moves on. Perhaps it was just disconcerting to see such a fine actress (terrific in "Pulp Fiction") play such poorly-perceived character. Or perhaps Thurman just forgot to put the cap on her camp before it overtook her Poison Ivy. Lost in all this is a fine cast of good guys. George Clooney steps into the role as Batman, and is perfectly cast. He brings a sense of fun to the role, and is quite good. Chris O'Donnell is again agreeable as Robin, while Alicia Silverstone makes a nice BatGirl. Fine actor Michael Gough reprises his role as the loyal butler. Unfortunately, the four are given much less screen time than the villains, who ruin the film. I would have rather watched these four actors brush their teeth than listen to one more of Ah-nuld's terrible puns. Shumaker again perks up the screen with vibrant colors and shades; the art direction is terrific (a scene in which Poison Ivy and her thug take over a junkyard from a gang is like a vivid dream sequence). The makeup is also sensational. Too bad they forgot to make a movie. Grade: D. - -- Mark A.
