Well, not to be argumentative or anything, but kindly state the innovations that Jewel has brought to the music industry. :-) Seriously, I have to defend Emily a bit here. Let's look at the dictionary. There are two shadings of "original": "pertaining to or belonging to the origin or first state of something" and "a work not copied from another". No one would argue that Jewel has originated music in the first sense of the word; and few, I think, would dispute that most modern artists create music that isn't copied from another (except for cover tunes of course). So yes, Jewel's music is not copied or plagiarized, and in that sense it is original. Of course, that IN ITSELF does not make her unique. "Innovative": "changing or altering by introducing something new". Well, what do we mean by "new"? Again, all Jewel's songs are written by her and not plagiarized. But has she played chords never before heard? Used rhyme schemes totally invented by her? Added progressions unique to music? Of course not. What IS original about Jewel is that she writes a combination of music and lyrics that touch us (this large and growing group of Angel-fans) in ways that no other artist before ever has. This is something unique -- but let's not abuse the words "original" and "innovative". Use of electronic synthesizers, electric guitars, digital real-time effects, pitch shifting, sampling... all these things are innovative and powerful, though not necessarily musically useful or emotive. It's the artist in the equation that makes music worth listening to. I hope no one thinks I an trying to belittle Jewel's accomplishments. I remain in awe of her beautiful tunes and lyrics, and am moved to tears by her music as with few others. Let's honor her for this, and not beat the deceased equestrian when it comes to labels and shadings of meaning. OK? Peace. - -- | Greg Dunn | And all you touch and all you see | | gregdunn@indy.net | Is all your life will ever be. | | GregDunn@aol.com | Pink Floyd | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 18:17:22 -0700 From: Casey Hansen Subject: Roc-fest YWMFM I thought the up tempo thing was just awesome! Does anyone have a CD-ROM with recording capabilities? This would make for some great angelfood, don't you think? A CD-ROM drive of this nature currently goes for $500 but they were $600 a month ago. (With DVD already showing up in home computer packages these CD-ROMs are only bound to get even less expensive.) A blank disc costs about $10 or cheaper if bought in bulk; a real bargain for angelfood that won't wear out with use. So if anyone wanted to start making digital angelfood, they could charge $15 or $20 per disc for a while to offset the cost of the hardware. This isn't commercial bootlegging (like that IIInfamous CD) because no profit would be made; ALL the money goes into producing the recorded material. Now of course, the master copy would have to be a tape because you can't record a CD anywhere but your computer. But imagine the quality of angelfood copied off that tape digitally! I don't plan on doing this myself. I don't have the money to invest and I don't want angelfood production as a hobby. It's a suggestion for anyone who thinks they might want to try it. If there's an ethical problem that I've overlooked, then someone please point it out to me. I don't mean to undermine "angelfood rules". I just thought this would make a good thing better. Jewel and her mother/manager have made it perfectly clear to us not to put any of her music on a CD for any reason what so ever. From my "newbie" web site: Jewel and Lenedra regularly supply the list with advance motice of news about Jewel (via Mr BB) and at times authorize the treeing of tapes, of which at times THEY provide the recorded material. The condoning of bootleg CDs on this list and/or even the private manufacturing of them for personal enjoyment can and will jeopardize that relationship we have with them and perhaps even end it. It's a risk tha tmany EDAs don't want to take and we have and will defend this "list policy" if someone posts to the list about boot CDs or making CDs of Jewel music/Angelfood. But imagine the > quality of angelfood copied off that tape digitally! Actually, having played with some of it, the problem is in the analog conversion... using a sound card to do it is just terrible, due to the incredible amounts of noise generated by all the computer components... Most PC sound cards offer little to no shielding. A good tape deck will have less noise than most sound cards. External Analog to Digital conversion adds enough cost to make it hard to do it on a not-for-profit basis. Even sound cards with good shielding are going to cost hundreds. > If there's an ethical problem that I've overlooked, then someone > please point it out to me. I don't mean to undermine "angelfood > rules". I just thought this would make a good thing better. The real reason not to do it, is simply that the terms from Jewel and Lenedra clearly state, "NO DIGITAL COPIES." I personally disagree with their position, but still accept it under the terms laid down for free distribution of Angelfood. This hasn't changed in the year+ I've been on the list, and it's been restated numerous times... I think it's on Mike's guidelines page, too. Angels Angels are the guardians of hope and wonder, the keepers of magic and dreams. Angels watch over you wherever you go, keeping each day perfect and promising a bright new tomorrow. The motto of all angels is "it's a wonderful life." Wherever there is love, an angel is flying by. Angels help you carry the ball, carry a tune, carry your weight and carry on! Your guardian angel knows you inside and out and loves you just the way you are. Angels keep the world safe for hummingbirds and butterflies and rainbows in spring. Angels keep it simple and always travel light. Angels love whipering secrets and whistling in the dark. Whenever you hear music, an angel is speaking to you. Remember to leave space in your relationships so the angels have room to play. Your guardian angel helps you find a place when you feel there's no place to go. Keep a spare angel in your pocket. Angels carry high-beam lights to help you through the darkest hours. Whenever you feel lonely, a special angel drops in for tea. Angels know that love is the only four letter word. We are always "angels on call" for a friend. Everytime you hear a bell, another angel has earned its wings. Angels are with you every step of the way and help you soar with amazing grace. After all, we are angels in training; all we have to do is spread our wings and fly. Ok so it's not really a poem. But it's nice and Jewel seems to have a fetish for angels:) She also seems to have a thing for the word "fragile," though that has nothing to do with this poem. My dad xeroxed the poem from a card he got from the Franciscan Mission Associates. It has a picture at the top of the angels from, I think, the sistine chapel. Oh, somebody was asking about other artists that might be liked on this list (or something to that effect. at least that's how I remember it, so flame me if I'm wrong. I mean sue me! no flames please. I'm covered in gasoline and would be flambe if flamed). Kristin Hersh was a good consideration. I think if yer going for the good guitar-work and honest lyrics on the rockish side, go for Ani DiFranco (always plays a mean acoustic on her six albums and has spoken word poems on a few) or Melissa Ferrick (her second album Willing to Wait is more acoustic than her first). On a folky vein, try Christine Lavin (hilarious songs), Patty Larkin (excellent guitar player and good lyrics), Dar Williams, Susan Werner (folk and blues mix). Then there's Sarah McLachlan (my personal fav, tied with Jewel that is) whose second album, Solace is IMHO her best. It's warmer and acousticier than her first, Touch (more Kate Bush, synth, ethereal), and her latest Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (more moody, alternative-but-not-quite). And then there's Tori Amos. All of these people give great performances live and I recommend them live and recorded. Oh and in a jazzy frame, go for Holly Cole or Jane Siberry. I like Canadians! ok all done bye-bye:) hugs to all. I know I need a couple. I am so happy, I mean this cd-rom is probably a year old, and everyone probably knows about it, and I was just clued out or something- but I found the cd-rom Launch with Jewel, and it is just so cool! I also got the Details, and Web magazine, the POY cd for my friend's birthday, and a Jewel single, taped Jewel at Rock Fest, so today was just like my "Jewel" day. I also saw her in Interview i know of and Details.. I also, believe it or not, pulled a picture of her out of a Bop! magazine from Pathmark (i ain't paying 3 bucks for a bunch of dumb girly gossip, i'm sorry :) ) But i was wondering what other magazines she was in besides these and the new Guitar World Acoustic and Acoustic Guitar magazines... I already have 3 walls in my room devoted to Bush and no doubt pictures and i started the celing on them too and i've finally added some jewel pictures (thanks rolling stone) but i really need some more jewel stuff - are there any posters out there? thanks ttyl - -linda :) _\|/_ o o ...ooo....(_)....ooo...................................................... | | | | Linda E. I gotta tell ya, it was great seeing so many responses and different opinions. That's the stuff that keeps music and popular culture interesting, everyone digs what they wanna dig. Dig? :) Hehee....well I wrote my previous post at about 3 AM without hearing anyone contracdict my usually opnionated thoughts for about 6 hours so...I was feeling a little self-rightous when I was banging on the 'ol keys. I just re-read it and got a few chuckles out of it (who did I think I was? Kurt Loder with an attitude) But generally, that;s still how I feel. I love to debate my musical opinions and I usually play devil's advocate when in comes to arguing about them. How some ever....there was one statement someone sent back which went a little something like this... "Gavin has even admitted to being influenced by Nirvana - whome they havebeen the base of many comparisons... Well of course they get called Nirvana wannabes and "seattle-sounding" - what else are you gonna call a band with guitars and vocals that aren't screetchy-high?" Hmmm...I call them The Jayhwaks, Soul Asylum, Blues Traveler, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Ben Folds 5....There are alot of rock combos out there that play great stuff without "setting their stomp boxes on self destruct" (the guy from Radiohead said that...I think it was Martin Short... :) ) and singing as if they just barely crammed certain parts of their respective anatomies into their "zebra-striped underwear" (thanks Jewel :) ) . Keep yo' ears open...I know I will....I might even dig a Bush song someday :) Thanks for all the feedback! JAC "Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth.
