Here's a copy of the original post that was sent out by Crunch: =) Hi everyone! =) My name is Mark Nissley. Most of you know me by the name of "Crunch". Alan was recently given an idea by Jewel. I volunteeed to research it and present it to the list. This is an idea for some- thing to do for Jewel for her birthday, not because we "deify" her, but it is something that she cares about, and we care about her. If this project does not sound right for you, there have been many other options made available on the list. Please maximize your window! ================================================== For those of you that have been following Alan(MrBB) and Mike's posts recently, they have been saying something VERY big was in the works for Jewel's birthday. Well, folks, THIS IS IT. There have been SO MANY good posts recently about birthday gifts for Jewel. We are a very creative, caring, and thoughtful community of angels. So thoughtful and creative, in fact, that we came up with many more possibilities than we could possibly put into action right now. So, after the outpouring of ideas from the list, it seemed the hardest part was finding something simple and angelic. This in mind, Alan explained our wishes to Jewel's mother, Lenedra. After telling her about the many wonderful suggestions from the EDA's, Alan asked for her advice. Much to our surprise, Lenedra had an immediate recommendation! It may accomplish in one opportunity all of the things we hope for Jewel on her birthday. Jewel was recently given a letter at one of the San Diego shows that was a little different than most. It captured her attention. This is the letter: ********************************************************** April 4, 97 Dear Jewel, When you went to collect your award at the American Music Awards show, you made a point of telling people, "never give up hope...it's what got me where I am today.". Meet James Kalanick. A 20 year old without much hope these days. You see, last fall James was returning to his car after running out of gas on the freeway near PB when he was struck from behind by a hit and run driver. The accident leaves James in a quadriplegic state, requiring motorized wheel chair and full time care taker. He will need both for the rest of his life. The driver never slowed or stopped and was never identified. The family had no insurance and live on a limited income. State programs have helped the family on most of the medical bills... Which brings us back to hope. Being confined to a wheel chair for the rest of your life can drastically alter one's dreams. James worked for Baltimore Bagel Co. in La Jolla prior to the accident. Admittedly, he was carefree and hadn't figured out what he wanted to do for a living. Now, however, his dream is to gain a sense of control and independence in his life and return to a job. As his former employer, we're trying to help. James needs a van equipped with a special hydraulic lift for transportration. The total cost is around $40,000. Baltimore Bagel (changing it's name to Einstein Bros Bagels) is having a couple of benefits to raise the necessary money for this vehicle. Would you consider helping us out? .....Matt Sullivan -- Einstein Bros Bagels, San Diego,CA.>> ************************************************************** Many of the ideas that were discussed concerning gifts for Jewel did not involve money. Many, if not most of us, can not afford much in the way of a sizeable donation. Individually, our contribu- tions may seem insignificant. However, small donations from each of us will grow into a combined "EDA Gift" that will make an unmistakable difference. Some intial phone calls have been made to see how easy it would be to put this plan into action. This is what we know: 1) There are other San Diego area benefits going on for James and we can be a small part of accomplishing this very "tangible goal". 2) There are no administration people making money. No money is being spent on advertising, etc. Every single dollar will go towards the equipment James needs. 3) Donations can be sent directly to the James Paul Kalanick Trust already set up specifically for James' equipment. 4) Jewel suggested it. The support of the EDA community toward the JPK Trust need not stop individual EDAs from following through on other great ideas they may have an interest in. The JPK Trust is one very worthy goal that we can all contribute to together. Donations, both large and small, all contribute to the same goal so it doesn't matter what financial situation you are presently in. We need not, and can not, try to raise $40K. Any donation (even one single dollar) is one step closer to the goal. There is alot of people on this list, just imagine if each person donated $5. Jewel's birthday is in just over a month. Jewel has received many gifts throughout her most recent tour and often she responds to them in the same way. She asks that we give to others the hope and inspiration that we once gave her. This is a chance for us to "manifest" that wish. So, how do we do this? How do we donate a few dollars to the James Paul Kalanick Trust for a collective EDA Gift to Jewel on her birthday? After just a few phone calls, it became apparent how simple this would be for us to do as EDAs. Matt Sullivan, James Kalanick's former employer and head of the JPK Trust, is an extremely helpful man. He truly appreciates Jewel's talents and is amazed that she read the letter, let alone get a call from her fans. He had all sorts of questions about who the EDAs are and what it is we are all about. After discussing Jewel and EDAs, Matt described exactly how easy it is to give whatever is available. Each of us can send a check, however large or small, directly to the bank that is holding the James Paul Kalanick Trust (Wells Fargo Bank). Step by step, here it is: Address a check to: James Paul Kalanick Trust In the memo postion of the check write the account number like this: Acct# 6671946366 Post the check in an envelope addressed to: James Paul Kalanick Trust Wells Fargo Bank 1302 Garnet Ave San Diego, CA, 92109 To keep an up to date record of what we have given, an E-mail account has been set up. After each of us has given our small part for James Kalanick, send an e-mail to . Let us know what you gave, the date it was sent off, and the check number. This info will be used to parallel the bank's records and to give the list updates about our efforts. In this way, we can each donate a small amount ($1, $5, $20, or more) to a cause which has captured Jewel's personal attention. Lenedra recommended this as something we could do for Jewel on her birthday. Another EDA offered the idea of sending Jewel a birthday card letting her know what we are doing. She will recieve the card on her birthday while on tour in Europe, reminding her that there are EDAs doing things for her while she is out on the road! This card is in progress, as is a web page (the address to be posted soon!) ***IMPORTANT: PLEASE forward any questions that you have to a new account I have set up for this project at . ALSO, to keep our own tally of the contributions, PLEASE send an email to AFTER you have sent your check stating how much you sent. Liz, Steve Poltz's future wife, is going to keep our efforts updated from this address. Please, carefully read this post again (I know, it's long!). Any comments can be posted to the list. Well, I agree that a lot of bands these days have a Seattle sound, but I don't agree about the bands you have listed. silverchair (with a little "s" people, that's how they write it) did have a few songs on Frogstomp that had a grungy, Seattle sound to them, but that's it. Most people classify them as a Seattle wannabe band because they've only heard songs like Tomorrow and Pure Massacre, and they haven't heard many of their other songs. Other than maybe 4 songs on Frogstomp, they don't sound Seattleish at all. And you want a good album, go buy Freak Show (their newest album). I can say that they do sound a lot like another band, but it isn't a band that comes from Seattle. They sound like Helmet if anything people. If you take the time to actually listen to silverchair's music, I think you'll realize this. I agree w/ you about Bush. They have Seattle written all over them. I've met people that didn't even know they were English because they say Gavin sounds like he's a Seattle singer. And I used to have Sixteen Stone, and have heard most of Razorblade Suitcase, so I can fairly say this, I'm not just judging it on one or two songs. I don't know how you can think that The Verve Pipe, Radiohead and Tool have a Seattle sound. I've never heard that before. I've only heard 4 or 5 of Verve Pipe's songs, but what I've heard doesn't sound like the distortion filled, angst ridden Seattle music that I know. Ditto for Radiohead. And you talk later in your letter about bands that are making new sounds, and uh... Tool is one of these bands. I can see that you've never really given them a listen other than the maybe 2 songs you've heard from them. I don't know of any other bands that sound like Tool. They aren't your everyday hard rock/metal band. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't judge bands before you actually know what they sound like. One song doesn't really tell you much about them. I'm sure you get angry when people who have only heard YWMFM and WWSYS start dissing Jewel and saying she's a no talent, so don't do the same for other bands. I'm not saying you have to like these bands, but don't say they're copying Seattle sounds, because most of them aren't. > It's great to know some artists with orignal sounds are finally > getting the attention they deserve though....Beck, Jewel, Garbage, Ehricka > Badu (I wish I could spell her name), Victoria Williams. Someone took a Umm... well I love Jewel to death, but I wouldn't say that she has an "original" sound. She isn't trying anything innovative in her songs. Yes she is more talented than almost all songwriters making big bucks these days, but what about her is so original? She writes great songs, sings, and plays guitar. I don't see that as anything original... but I'm not denying that she's incredible. Anyway, thanks if you read this far, I'm sorry to go so off topic. *hugs* Emily ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 13:02:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Matt Willcourt Subject: Re: WWSYS and Love me Just Leave Me Alone I also haven't listened to POY for a long time, after getting the treed tapes. Hi Angelz Me(Margaret) again.... I'm feeling really pissed off, sad, and jealous at the same time, so if you don't want to read why, then just delete this message... Well, here goes, There was a major party yesterday with like all of the important people from our school (meaning famous students or whatever.) were there. Like an hour or so before the party while I'm picking out what to wear my mother walks in the room asking me what I'm doing and where I'm going. I tell her to a prty. She says What Party. I say the one that my friend Veronica is having. NOTE; It's not a birthday party. Then my mom says oh no uh uh you are not going to that party.... I was like excuse me?? What did you just say?? so she repeats it. I start b*tching off how unfair it is that my brothers get to go wherever they please without even asking.... this is the second or maybe even third time this has happened my parents did this to me. They don't let me go anywhere with my friends they treat me like a baby. And trust me it's not because they care. They don't. And I know that for sure.. My friends get to have parties got to parties and I'm stuck at home doing nothing. The only good part about staying home is working on the computer. I feel jealous or should I say insanely jealous because my friends have all of the laughter have all of the fun and I don't. I feel really left out when they start talking about the parties they've been to when I call them....I mean it's not like I'm a party freak or anything but who doesnt want to go to a party every now and then. I just don;'t think it's worth living anymore. I just want to die and not have to worry about anything at all. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 16:18:27 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel and Foolish Games on VH1 Show Sunday/tonight I just found this on the VH1 web site, not sure what version of "Foolish Games" they will play: Hollywood and Vinyl:Batman This half hour show features soundtrack hits from hot movies. This episode features music videos from all of the Batman films, including: Prince "Batdance," Seal "Kiss By a Rose," U2 "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me," and new music from "Batman & Robin" by R. Kelly and Jewel. It's airing tonight at 11pm EST, not sure of other time zones. I know they've shown this episode of "Hollywood & Vinyl" before and I do remember people posting about "Foolish Games" on MTV & VH1 and it being recent footage from the upcoming Unplugged, so I'm not sure if this is what they saw. Have you ever even listened to a whole album? Their new album is coming out July 1st, that makes three. And from what I've heard (it's been released in Europe and Japan already) it is an awesome album. And they are doing new inovative stuff. I'm sure your'e basing your judgement on Creep. It's a good song, but definetly not their best. - -=Court /* Court Schuett, a totally modern boy. schuett@waldo.ivcc.edu ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When you're following an angel Does it mean you have to throw your body off a building?
