Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 16:03:13 -0400 From: sm_kartalopo@ACAD.FANDM.EDU (Stephanie Kartalopoulos) Subject: NJC My dearest family, WHen I was young, I saw something that not many kids my age saw-meaning in the stars. The stars which illuminate the night sky were no longer pretty little points set against a sea of black, but were something magical, something miraculous, something real. For me, the stars were light, warmth, goodness, love, and hope. For me the stars were everything. I believe certain things about our dearest companions. I always believed that they started out so small and then grew bigger because, as each person finds him or herself in the stars, in the moon, in nature, in each other, and in themselves, each person finds a certain caliber of goodness and warmth which can never be replaced or diminished. As this happens under the night sky, displayed in all its glory for nature, the stars drink up this goodness and warmth and radiate it all in its purest possible form, love. This is not some typical type of love that people can think will come and go; it is something much deeper ad much truer. I can only describe this perfect love in a Greek word, "agape." Agape is love, but it is not just *any* love. It is *the* love. It is that deep spiritual love which was never created and can never be destroyed. Agape is the love that comes from mind, body, and soul. Agape is the love that allows us to live, that allows us to have angels, that allows us to love and be loved, that allows us to dream, hope, care, and do so much more. Because of all that I have ever believed about the stars, I always correlated them with angels. Our angels are there for us, unconditionally, to guide us with love, hope, warmth, and kindness towards amazing realizations that we oftentimes can not even imagine. Our angels fill up our souls with warmth when we feel loneliness to remind us that we are indeed never alone. Our angels guide, teach, and protect us throughout their lives, especially throughout the immortal lives of our souls. Each and every one of you has been my angel and has been my point of light, goodness, warmth, hope, and agape. In the sea of blackness that can be associated with the world in which we live, all of you have stood out, radiating goodness and love. It is through this radiation that your wings are known, felt, admired, and loved. I love each and everyone of you dearly, mind, body, and soul, and I thank you for being such precious parts of my life and for welcoming me into yours with such open arms. You have supported me and my dreams, and you constantly continue to encourage me to stay true to myself by letting my soul, my hopes, and my dreams guide me. Truly there is nothing more beautiful than all that you have given me and all that you are. I thank you dearly, with all my soul and all my love. At StephStock, when I was blowing out my candles, I was told to make a wish. What wish cthat I could possibly make could be better than all that you have given me and than the beauty with which you have surrounded me? I did not make a wish, rather, I thanked God, my angels, and my stars for being surrounded by all of you, my infinitely beautiful points of hope, warmth, light, goodness, and agape. I wrote this poem at the end of March, and it somehow got lost, shoved between two pages in the back of my journal. I was recently flipping through my journal while getting material together for my portfolio when I found this poem. As I read it, I began crying, for I realized that, in many ways, you are the stars of which this poem speaks. I dedicate this poem to all of you, to my angels, to my stars, to my family, to the EDAs. I love you madly, Stephanie POEM: by Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos "I wonder if tonight will be a starry night" She says this, of course, as if it were her only reason for living. With hope in her eyes, fear quivering in her voice, her fingers crossed, prayers to the moon running through her head, she looks for her stars. The clouds disguise what she knows is there, but still she looks and still she hopes yet still she prays. The motion of the sky- the game-like movement of the clouds- pleases her, brings a smile to her face, reassures the hope in her eyes. And it's all because the clouds part, they reveal a star, just a small one, as if freeing it from a sort of prison. Her hope has never steered her wrong. Her prayers have never lead her astray. Her faith has never abandoned her. Another cloud moves- another star freed from enjailment. Slowly she is winning tonight's battle against those evil clouds, those wretched beasts which try to disguise her heaven her beauty her pride her love. And still she says- "I wonder if tonight will be a starry night." Knowing that there are a lot of Bob Dylan fans on this list, I thought they would enjoy it. If you aren't a Dylan fan, you can disregard it. ****************************************************************** Bob Dylan "There was a violent, angry emotion running through me then. I just played the guitar and harmonica and sang those songs and that was it." The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan "There's too many old-fashioned songs in there, stuff I tried to write like Woody [Guthrie]." The Times They are A-Changin' "When I first started writing those kind of songs, there wasn't anybody doing things like that." Another Side of Bob Dylan "The songs are insanely honest, not meanin' to twist any head and written only for the reason that I myself, me alone, wanted and needed to write them." Bringing It All Back Home "There's more symbolism, they're written on more than one level." Highway 61 Revisited "I'm not gonna be able to make a record better than that one.'Highway 61' is just too good. There's a lot of stuff on there that I would listen to." Blonde on Blonde "In 'Blonde on Blonde' I wrote out all the songs in the studio." "The closest I ever got to the sounds I hear in my mind was on the individual bands in the 'Blonde on Blonde' album." John Wesley Harding "We recorded that album and I didn't know what to mke of it. Lots of times people will get excited and say 'This is great this is fantastic'. But usually they're full of shit." Nashville Skyline "On 'Nashville skyline' you had to read between the lines. I was trying to grasp [for] something that would lead me on to where I thought I should be, and didn't go nowhere." Self Portrait "That album was put out...[because] at that time...I didn't like the attention I was getting. I [had] never been a person that wanted attention." New Morning "I didn't say 'Oh my god, they don't like this (Self Portrait), let me do another one'. It wasn't like that." Pat Garrett & Billy the KidOriginal soundtrack from the movie. Dylan "I didn't think it was that bad really." Blood on the tracks "A lot of people tell me they enjoy that album. It's hard for me to relate to that...I mean, it, you know, people enjoying the type of pain, you know?" "I was fighting sentimentality all the way down the line." Desire "That was new. I didn't take that as far as I wanted to, I didn't have the chance to do that. I wanted to do more harmonica and violin together but we never got a chance to do that" Street-Legal "The critics treatd this record spitefully...I saw one review that accused me of going to 'Vegas' and copying Bruce Springsteen because I was using Steve Douglas, a saxophone player..." Bob Dylan at Budokan "They twisted my arm to do a live album for Japan." Slow Train Coming "The songs that I wrote for 'Slow Train' album [frightened me]...I didn't plan to write them, but I wrote them anyway." Saved "People didn't like those tunes, they rejected all my stuff when my show would be all off the new album." Shot of Love "People didn't listen to that album in a realistic way." Infidels "Somehow , I figured I could always get away with just playing the songs live in the studio and leaving. It got to the point where I felt people expected that from me." Empire Burlesque "I'm the final judge of what goes on and off my records." Down in the Groove "There's no rule that claims that anyone must write their own songs. And I do. I write a lot of songs. But so what, you know?" A Bush thread! ***Please Note: This Is a Bit of a Rant, I'm probably going to get flamed off the face of the planet....but....it's just how I feel...here goes! *** Hmm... My 1st reaction to the question of "do you guys like bush." was originally, "no....as far as I'm concerned, they blow." Well....now that I think about it, it's still my reaction, but I won't leave it at that....I'll provide some backup... Okay...I guess maybe it's not *just* Bush that bugs me, it's the fact that they sound like everything else. Seriously kids (I use "kids" not as a word pertaining to age, but just as "folks", so please don't think I'm saying just kids listen to Bush :) ) turn on your radios to your "alternative/rock" stations, what have we here....? Hmmm....Silverchair, Bush, The (auurg!) Verve Pipe, Radiohead, Tool, and a few other bands that seem to pop up, have a hit and leave our ears ringing (Seven Mary Who?). All these bands seem to be derivative of one common sound, Seattle. There were a few cool bands that came out of Seattle and the whole "alt" rock thing, Pearl Jam, Nirvana (I wasn't crazy about them, but credit must be given) Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. These bands were, and some are, doing something new. Making new sounds, blending musical genres, and experimenting with new techniques. And in doing so they (and others) layed the blueprints which many bands follow and and add little or nothing to. And what have we got? A lovely little recipie for pop/alterna/rock. How many times have you listened to a song that goes like this......heavy guitar intro ("It goes up to 11..."), slow quiet verse, loud repetitive chorus, slow verse...blah, blah, blah....fade out. A few, right? (Live....I'm looking in your direction....) Basically, what I'm saying is that there were a few influential bands that came out, they sold some records, people liked them, and copied them. I mean...this isn't anything new either. (Weren't Journey, Foreigner, and Survivor really the same band?) This has been around since the roots of rock and roll in the days of jump blues bands, doo-wop, and rockabilly. How many 50's "teen idols" sounded surprisingly like Elvis? About as many as the amount of alterna-rock frontmen that sound like Eddie Vedder or Kurt Cobain today. (Scott Weiland and Gavin R. , I'm looking in your direction respectively) I guess it all boils down to a matter of opinion in the end. My opinion: Bush and all those others are just clones, there are some really great original sounds out there these days that are getting ignored because our radio stations and our record stores have seen the formula work in the past and change is an expensive thing to them. It's great to know some artists with orignal sounds are finally getting the attention they deserve though....Beck, Jewel, Garbage, Ehricka Badu (I wish I could spell her name), Victoria Williams. Someone took a risk on these artists, took a risk on something that wasn't 3 chords and a little radio-friendly attitude. I'm sure the Jewel clones, and the Beck clones, etc. will be finding their ways onto the shelves and into the airwaves soon, my hope is that the innovators, like Jewel etc. will be given credit for what they have done and not just get lumped in with the bands that have just copied what they heard ther last album. Oh....and brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are fresh. Just something for the New Englanders out there..... :) JAC "Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. That is incredibly sad but true. Our radio stations suck supremely, and we only have ONE record store that I would even consider having new bands' new albums, and it probably doesn't. My >opinion: Bush and all those others are just clones, there are some really >great original sounds out there these days that are getting ignored because >our radio stations and our record stores have seen the formula work in the >past and change is an expensive thing to them. I totally agree. I've thought for a long time that about 90% of music that gets played on the radio is totally lacking in originality and integrity. Most of it is just commercial crap that's churned out by the pop music machine to make money. I rarely hear anyone out there who is saying something, either 1) worth saying, or 2) that has a sense of integrity or real commitment. Most of pop music is just posturing, devoid of sincerity. I really believe that that is why the music industry is so screwed up these days. The spiritual vaccuum of the Seattle scene manifested in a slew of mediocre grunge bands that pored forth their masturbatory whining over the airwaves. That's what makes Jewel (as well as artists like Tara McLean, Patty Griffin, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel, Joy Eden Harrison and the Rugburns) so special. There is a quality to their music that can only be described as "honest". I hope that Jewel is paving the way for a trend toward "honesty" in pop music and that, seeing her success, many others will seek not to be Jewel clones but to express themselves, in their own unique way, as honestly as she has.
