It's hard for people to accept others, especially when they do something that is the opposite of what's expected from them, such as listening to music that others with the same "label" wouldn't listen to. I hear ya. My sister feeds me the same crap your brother's feeding you. She hates Jewel, Tori, etc, and refuses to listen to them, favoring Nirvana and Marilyn Manson. But the fact that she hates my music, doesn't make me want to stop listening to it. Don't sacrifice your happiness because someone else can't handle it. Eventually, people will realize they can't change you, and leave you alone. And if they don't, you could always just turn "Sometimes it be that Way" up REALLY loud and drown them out. I wrote to many people privately and asked if they would be willing to contribute. Many people that I knew of with Jewel memorabilia were asked. A few declined. No hard feelings. I didn't post and announce that they turned me down. Many people came forward on their own and offered items for the raffle. One person was Bob Scott. He offered 8 photos. He even donated a one of a kind autographed Jewel photo. On top of his generous offer, he also sent a full set directly to James. Then he offered three tapes as well. Bob Scott makes his living as a photographer. He is also a reader and contributor on this list. Bob made sure only the winners would get the photos by offering to mail them directly to them. Erick Garske also donated some rare pictures of Jewel from the Innerchange days. Those pictures may be a part of the EDA interview on CBS this Saturday. They took copies to consider for use in the interview. When I saw Richard's post about a Jewel photo, I contacted him privately about considering donating a copy of the photo for the raffle. He never even responded. If he had said he didn't want to, that would have been fine. If he had asked for more information, that also would have been fine. The fact that he didn't even answer was ok. But Richard, I think I can see through your real intent for posting this letter. Both Bob and Erick have gotten their work into Jewels hands. Many EDAs have even purchased photos from them. On the other hand it seems you can't even get through the front door. I am inclined to believe that you are only looking to make a Jewel connection at this point. In total, close to $5000 was donated. Some came in from purchases of Jewels poem book. Others donated through the raffle. Many just sent in money directly to the James Paul Kalanick Trust. None of those people contacted Atlantic Records before donating their hard earned money. On the other hand I did do some research first before getting involved. First I contacted James' employer who had first started raising money for James. I even talked to the bank to make sure that all the money would eventually reach James. I even got then to finally waive a fee on Canadian checks. Then I contacted James' family. Finally I met James. At no time did I try to contact Jewel or her people about this. That is because it was about James and not Jewel. If your intention was to make sure this was a legitimate cause, then I don't blame you for checking. But SHAME ON YOU if your only intention was self promotion. I am quoting your entire letter so the EDA list can decide for themselves. But I seem to smell a bad odor from it. First, the relationship between Jewel and this list is unique and organic in a way that you may not be expecting. Anything Igor is involved with would certainly be a "valid" fundraiser. It's not even a question. But since this list works not like a bureaucracy or officious corporate rock interface with "management" of Jewel, it's good to know how the JPK Trust campaign began... The Every Day Angels were thinking up many wonderful ideas to celebrate Jewel's birthday, and she sent word that she had a cause that was worthy of supporting -- that of James who was needing to raise funds for a specially equipped vehicle (he was the victim of a hit-and-run). SO, the EDAs have contributed through cash donations, by purchasing Jewel's poetry books (70% of sales going to JPK), and through donating/participating in an EDA raffle that developed spontaneously -- with photographs and other special Jewel memorabilia being contributed by EDAs and other patrons helping to raise funds and interests for this cause chosen by Jewel. That's just one example of the special way things work with this group. Through mutual respect and love, Jewel, her mom Lenedra, and the EDAs work together to make the world better, as "in the end only kindness matters" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jun 1997 11:33:05 EDT From: lotbm@juno.com Subject: getting to know u One more thing... Like Bob Scott, I make my living as a photographer. You can pick up the current (Sept.97) issue of Metal Edge and see my name listed on page 26. I wish to continue to make a living as a photographer. I am not here to sell images of Jewel to her fans. I deal with Newspapers, Magazines, Record Companies and other media outlets. Do you know that if I tried to sell a image of the No Doubt, the Rolling Stones or Van Halen to a fan I could end up in court? Even if I sell the image at my cost because even though I did not make a profit the lab I used made a profit from me. What would that do to my credability as a photojournalist if I were selling photos and making a profit from their fans. I just photographed Tina Turner last week. Do you think her manager would allow me to photographer her so I can sell them to her fans? I have to be suspicious when someone contacts me directly for photos. I have a agent, Photfeatures (http://pw2.netcom.com/~photof/menu.html) in Los Angeles that handels my work. My work can be seen in magazines in the US, Canada, Japan, the UK and Paris. I get about three emails a month from people claiming to be Magazines, or Student Newspapers looking for photos. I ask them to send me a copy of the publication and a letter of assignment from their editor. to this day, I have yet to recieve any materials from them. This is not about me getting my foot in the door, I have been shooting for over ten years. I am established in the music business (I even have a platinum record from Guns N' Roses), brows through my web pages http://members.aol.com/Morava2/welcome.html . You will see I have photographed my share of people in the business. The images that are up, represent only a small fraction of my work. I would like to work with you and I am sure the James Paul Kalanick Trust can still use more help. This should be a on going event, be it yearly or monthly. I want to help and I will recontact Atlantic Records Monday. If anyone here on the list can have Jewel's Managment also contact Atlantic Records publicity (New York). We should have this matter taken care of shortly. Sorry this was so long... Richard R. But lately, I stopped turning the station when a Bush song came on. Why? I gained the ability to block out Gavin's voice (it annoys me) and the lyrics (I get the impression he just thinks of two or three semi-cool lines and words that rhyme). When they don't drown out the music with the ohsogrunge shitty pedals, the music is pretty damn good. I really have to respect that they do almost everything. How many non-prog rock bands arrange the strings on their albums? Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and Nigel of Bush are the only ones off the top of my head. --Josh >Hello Fellow Angelz!! >I've been wanting to ask this question for a long time, but felt kind of >dumb asking it, BUT here goes, How many of you on this List like The Band >Bush? Tara was amazing every time. She has a very human approachability to her songs that enable the listener to become one with the song. She also has the presence of someone with twice her experience. She was able to go from playing to six people in a bar in Maine, to the next night playing a packed show at the Kendall Cafe, and then playing an opening set for Barenaked Ladies at the Hampton Beach Casino. This is no easy task, it takes a change in energy and a change in tempo of the show. It also really impressed me at the Barenaked Ladies show that not only did she play a wonderful set but was able to keep a majority of the 3,000 person audience from talking through her set. For those of you that have gone to decent size concerts you know how hard it is for a performer to grab an audience like that. The Kendall Cafe show had it's own challenges. There were about 125 people crammed into a space that accomadated 80 people, but more improtantly were the program directors for 3 radio stations, 4 record guys, 2 concert promoters, and assorted others from local print media. I have never performed but I would think a situation like having careermakers in the audience would have to be excruciatingly hard. The reason I am writing all of this is beacuse for many of you Tara Maclean is coming to a town near you. I can not urge you enough to go to a show, or two. I garuntee you will not be dissapointed. I know that some of the people on this list have seen her before and will agree with me that she is absolutely amazing. So if you get a chance go to one of the shows, and make sure you say hi to Tara but also to Bill Bell her accompanist. and if you feel like it you can even tell them hi from me. So here they are, the tour dates for Tara Maclean in her North American tour. 6/21/97 New York NY Mercury Lounge 06/22/97 Philadelphia PA Tin Angel 06/24/97 Nashville TN Exit / In 06/25/97 Atlanta GA Smith's Olde Bar 06/27/97 Cleveland OH Wilbert's 06/28/97 Pontiac 7th House 06/30/97 Chicago IL Schuba's 07/01/97 Minneapolis MN Fine Line Music Cafe 07/02/97 Canandaigua NY Finger Lakes P.A.C.
