When I send a message to the list, it appears 3 times. I don't know why. But, I've witnessed a post I sent once come to me in the mail, 3 times. 2. Is it just cause I live in Delawhere? Two days I posted a request for guitar tab information. I recieved responses that day (thank you those who did). The next day (today) I recieved the my post (3 times of course), for the first time. How come I don't get my mail even on the same day as everyone else? That's it. If anyone has any feedback for me, please send it. If there are any Ben Harper fans out there, I definately recommend picking up his new album, The Will to Live. I bought it yesterday, and let me tell you, the thing blew my mind. It just might be better than his last phenomenal album, Fight for your Mind. It is a little harder-edged than the previous album, but definately just as stirring. For those of you who don't know who I am talking about, Ben Harper is an amazing singer-songwriter signed to the Virgin lable. Ben, together with his band the Innocent Criminals, has released three albums including the two that I have mentioned and Welcome to the Cruel World. Ben plays a unique instrument called the Weissenborn that gives his music a distinct, soulful and earthy sound. The themes of his songs are generally quite positive, dealing with such topics as love, spirituality, self-improvement and renewal and freedom from oppression. But I beleive the number one theme is spirituality. Ben's music conveys a love for a higher power that is both humbling and uplifting. Furthermore, his music carries a social-consciense such as that seen in the work of artists ranging from Bob Dylan to Bob Marley. I definately reccomend Ben Harper's music to anyone who is looking for a positive, uplifting and soul-stirring experience. Ben's music definately touches both the mind and the soul. Take care. I have to side with Josh on this one... there is no one way to make a poem great... to say that never saying you had a crappy day in a poem titled crappy day makes it great (because you descibed it) is ludicris Some of the greatest songs in human history have been repetative, as well as poems... now I am no real Doors fan, but most people think Jim Morrison was a fantastic poet, but yet he states the name of his poem in the poem The Beatles... think of the lyrics to "Yesterday", "Hard Days Night", "Strawberry Fields", or Aerosmith's "Crazy", "Angel", "Love in an Elevator".... or, here's a stretch, Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me", "Who Will Save Your Soul", "Angel Standing Bye", "God's Gift To Women" etc etc etc... It's a comanality, and it works So for any one person to say what makes a poem great is wrong. What makes peotry great is where it comes from, and what it does to others who read it. But then plans changed, and she changed the recording dates, but overall it is Atlantic holding off. Now they must have their reasons... they've been pushing her all the way... from my source "It's very rare to have a label as big as Atlantic push any musician like they're doing to Jewel. Date: 19-Jun-1997 12:57pm EDT From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: Dylan never sold out, Jewel... Well, there are definite comparisons evident between Bob Dylan and Jewel, especially Jewel live. But Dylan was never as controlled by his record companies into making the pop attention plays that Jewel has been used for. Admittedly music was a lot different back then, a lot less of a business, but still, Dylan seemed to be totally about the music. He wasn't radio friendly and proud of it. Jewel is young and naive to some extent and has been manipulated into a pop star. Now, this usually doesnt bother me too much although it does make me sick of her played out radio songs, and now I have to see her in thousand seat venues with sreaming teenage girls everywhere. But Dylan got huge and popular and had to start playing big venues too. The thing about Jewel that concerns me is not that she is holding back the new album, I dont like it anyway when artists realize material more than once every two years, its overload. She still tours relentlessly but is again, an icon of the mainstream now. She changes her songs to make them shorter and more radio-friendly, that is very close to complete sell-out even if it isnt her fault or choice. But redoing YWMFM and now shortening and removing whole lines from Foolish Games, plus doing a cheesy video for it, why she put it on that soundtrack in the first place is beyond me, is just plain bad. If anything, Jewel should learn from Dylan who to use her popularity and influence and popularity to enact change, she has the voice, the spotlight on her, now do something with it. Make a statement. Be more political. Make all the philosophies that are well known to us EDAs well known to the public. Stop doing so many talk shows, and when you do, use them to make a point, not just to sing your new hit song. Now, being rebellious and outspoken often gets artists even more attention and popularity, but I believe it is a risk worth taking. Look at one of Dylan's greatest moments-when he had the courage to walk on stage at Luve Aid and basically say, you know, this helping out hunger in Ethiopia is a good cause and all, but there are people starving right here in the US in the midwest as farming is phased out of the new American lifestyle, what about those people, let's help them first, lets worry about out own home and our own people before we start raising money for Africa. And that is how Farm Aid started. I dunno I guess I am rambling at this point, in a montt or two I will be sick of Foolish Games too which is sad cause I really used to like that song a lot. And another thing, when Jewel plays in concert, she should purposely not play WWSYS or YWMFM every night, or only play one, that way it shows the people that just showed up for those songs that Jewel Kilcher and her music is much more than that. Tori does it playing "Silent All These Years" and "Crucify" rarely, Dave Matthews Band hasnt played "What Would You Say" or "satellite" this tour, things like that. Jewel should take a stand against the pop mainstream instead of being controlled by it, control it and use it for good. Dylan did. Later, Sean Hooks "Doesn't it make you feel ashamed to live in a land where justice is a game?" - -Bob Dylan(from a vrey political, long, statement, anti-mainstream song) "Our standard of living somehow got stuck on survive." - -Jewel Kilcher(more Deep Water type messages and less YWMFM and that pop stuff) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 13:55:56 -0400 (EDT) From: FabCAGal@aol.com Subject: Re: NJC: Correction...women artist statistics John-Eric is the BIGGEST Alanis Morissette fan in the world...and hence, an expert on this matter. (she's already said she has many things she wants to do, including acting and writing, but that singing is what she is doing now.) peace (love and understanding too) -paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 14:17:26 EDT From: eda-westleyd@juno.com (Westley A Dent) Subject: Re: What does this list entail? We will have an RV decorated in blue ribbons with a couple of blue flags on the roof so everyone will be able to find it when they arrive. Farr is providing the RV as well as the food and drinks with the help of anyone who would like to contribute. If anyone plans on using the EDA RV for shelter, food, and/or drinks, please try to give Farr some money to help cover the costs of everything. We'll have restrooms, A/C, plenty of food and drinks, and a place to sleep (limited) for those of you wishing to sleep in the RV. Lora, you are not a bad person. Maybe they just didn't understand how uncomfortable you were at graduation. My parents get like that every now and then, too. But hey, sometimes I just want to be alone. Sometimes being alone, to me, is the greatest feeling in the world. Don't worry about it...you are just fine. Flame > away. > > -- > I can agree with Mark on this point mainly because of my taste in music. i know that I like to listen to the music from the 50's and 60's alot, and there was a certain flow to that sort of music that it seems to be missing from today's music. As well as the fact that alot of todays music doesn't fit into the categories that they are slotted for. Take for instance the artist that this list was based off of. Her music fits into Rock, Country, and Folk. as well as other genres that I don't see. But the point I am trying to make is that in terms of tone, a lot of the femal artists have a softer voice, tone that they set, (notice I said a lot, not all. There are some who take a heavier approach but they do not fit with my interests IMHO) and are expanding to seem to fit better. That is as Mark said, probably due to the fat that there are more of them now and their numbers are increasing as the years go by. I'll admit, not much of the music from today can motivate me due to having a not to understandable set of lyrics set to harsh music IMHO. That is one thing that I like about the female songwriters and singers of today, it is not as harsh. But that is just my taste, not everyone else's.
