Hi guys! I had the most dramatic two days of the summer, up to now, I just thought I would share some thoughts with you and stories, little ones, I promise... Okay.. Yesterday, there was a contest on the radio station I was listening to, (Jet FM 102 out of Erie Pa, for those of you interested..)anyhoo, I was going to play but the song right after the touchtones( the signal for calling) was Jewel's YWMFM. So I said what the hell. I called. The first time it was busy, and I tried dialing again, twice, actually and the number got messed up, but the next time I got through... I was so excited that I sounded really idiotic on the radio but I got four free movie passes to a "special screening" with free breakfast and free movies and stuff! I am sooo excited. The only bad part is that it's on a Saturday morning at 10am...oh well, it will be worth it. And those of you interested in teh DJ dating part can email me...Yes and next week....to answer the most important questions....:-) Well, today went well, I picked up my tickets with my friend Mike who drives me too and from work everyday because my car was totalled in a car accident..well anyway...Today, we are at work and he says "Do you think Amy can take you home?" Well, Amy is my friend whose uncle died yesterday and she is still upset..I didn't want to ask her and impose..well, he is being a really big you know what.. So I wasn't talking to him, he gets all mad and says fine! Find another ride to work etc..... I hate the fact that when you give someone the best parts of yourself the through them in your face... I don't know what to do, and if I have to do something...I just feel, well, misunderstood, unappreciated, and used..... But, here are some versus that sprang to mind earlier... It was inspired by some conversation had in discussion of the earlier situation... Words I loathe..... By gentle, my angel wings are newly pressed and very fragile.... oh, and I know that this wont be as good as Stephs or anyone else but my writing techinique has room for development..okay, on with the show.. You are not welcome here! Your knuckles ache from wrapping Knocking at the oak door which stands in front of you. You pound until you can hear it's heart beat, or is that yours? You try to feel it, to find the secret which unlocks it. Harder! You begin to feel your arm hurt. The pain travels down, from your fingers to your wrist. Continuing to your elbows and shoulders. Haunted by pain for an eternity. You call desperately, "Is anyone home?" The knocking has not opened that strong door. The persistance of your voice has not opened that door. You sweat with trials and disapointment. What I am doing wrong? What I am forgetting? Why is the door so stubborn? Why are we made this way? Pondering these questions, you breathe. In and out, In and out. The rythm and movement. Natural and sensuous movements. A calm, patient air overcomes you. Irritation and anger, frustration and pain. Needless. Love, Loyalty, Community abound. The welcome mat is placed on the floor In front of the stong stubborn oak door. It is unlocked. Okay, that is pretty sketchy..and I know most of you will probably delete this by the time you have read this far anyway...I was just in need of some loving friends tonight. Steph, thanks for everything, I admire you so much and...don't blush.... Okay, I am off to bed, hopefully, to have inspirations and pleasant dreams. I with the same to all of you! I love discussing this junk, so feel free to rant to me or > agree. Good point. Gender has become a genre because of the past inequality of the music industry, and this is a fact. It is true that some people just like female artists the best, and I'm sure many Jewel listeners are in this category. But others, like myself, just find themselves talking more about the female artists they like because we know that they need it more in this music industry, which is much more fickle with its females than males. Case in point: if someone looks at my 350+ cd collection, they generally say I have nearly all female, when in fact the collection is nearly equal. I love Tracy Chapman, Alanis, Jewel, Tori, Ani, Brenda Kahn, Sinead O'Connor, Heather Nova, Joan Osborne, but also the Counting Crows, Dan Bern, Wally Pleasant, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Harry Chapin, Weezer, Ben Lee, and Wilco. I don't really know if I'm making a point or not, but I think the main reason that people discuss their female singers on this list more than male is that the males really don't need to be discussed as much... others do enough discussing for them, and the music industry is designed more for them. John -- thanks for that quotation -- it is an essential and simple truth, IMHO. Speaking of small daily differences, I had an idea today on how I can help to spread the literal "joy" of a wonderful artist who happens to be among the friends of Jewel on the San Diego music scene. I got to meet and speak with -- but not hear -- Joy Eden Harrison at Java Joe's last Friday, after the Cindy Lee Berryhill show. I bought her cd from her, and I told her that if I didn't like it, then "nothing ventured, nothing gained," but if I DID like it, then it is possible that some nice and unexpected things might happen. Well, I've got to tell you, Joy is an astonishing singer/songwriter. (I just LOVE how being an EDA lets you say words like "astonishing" -- and really mean it -- so often!) Many of the EDAs have heard her sing with Jewel on the Innerchange tapes; she wrote and performs "Where Have You Gone, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean." Every song on her cd is of a similar genre and as good or better than that tune; image the sultry crooner singing very late at night in a smoke-filled basement Paris cabaret, bringing you heartbreak with ennui on a silver-throated platter. No wonder she told me that the French "get it." You do NOT have to be French to get it. You do not even have to be in San Diego to get it! That's because, in an effort to spread her wonderful music beyond the confines of Joy's car and Bob Duffey's cocktail table (he manages her as well as the Rugburns, when they allow themselves to be managed), I am hereby volunteering to do the following: For the first ten EDAs who reply with their interest, I will pick up her cd for you at cost -- $15.00 (a bargain at twice the price!) and send it to you.... -- AND -- I will dub a recent Jewel concert on a blank cassette for you. All you need to do is send me the 15 dollars, a blank 100-minute Maxell II or TDK-SA (or better) tape, a padded mailer, and return postage (best bet is a 3 dollar priority mail stamp and label). I'm going out on the proverbial limb again with this one; I'm going to scavenge for ten copies of the cd before I hear back from anyone (and before they disappear and become priceless collectors' items). I've listened to Joy's cd every day since Saturday, more than once each day. All I can say is that her parents named her right! Try to get back to me before Friday, as I am venturing down to the SD area and hope to start mining for this gem then. tty'all later, - -=-Larry-=- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 01:42:46 -0700 From: christa edwards Subject: Re: Jewel: The Next Dylan? >PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT JEWEL AND DYLAN- THEY ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE >>DIFFERENT LIVES DIFFERENT MUSIC- THIS IS A JEWEL PAGE- STOP BRINGING IN OTHER >>ARTISTS! > >I'll talk about Dylan whenever and wherever I feel like it. I post the lyrics here because I know not everyone has seen them and I just think they are so beautiful. And SO TRUE! I am a Priestess, a follower of the Old Religion, from a time when women were closer, an ancient time when the Goddess was worshipped. I know the bond between women. I know the sacred circle. Now please don't get me wrong - I LOVE MEN! :) But what Jewel writes about is most definitely true. Anyway, I've rambled enough, please excuse me. I don't want to overdo my welcome. I would just like Jewel to know that these words really really touched my heart. And they inspired me to write something of my own (although completely unrelated to the subject in "Dance"), which follows Jewel's lyrics. ***** Dance Between Two Women by Jewel Thank you for the flowers you brought me today And thank you for the kindness you showed me today No love can be stronger than between two strong women No man can ever know the dance between two women We can dance... My lady... May I have this dance? Thank you for the wisdom the knowing from inside And thank you for the comfort only a woman can provide No man can ever know the dance between two women Love can't be stronger than between two strong women We can dance... My lady... May I have this dance? Thank you for the strength without a need for power And thank you for the rhythym, the sacred circle Love can't be stronger than between two strong women No man can ever know the dance between two women Like you and I We can dance... My lady... May I have this dance? ***** They Just Do Waves of water crash the shoreline, dust dances in the light rays No one tells them how, they just do what they do Birds bring food to their young, bees buzz as they fly What makes them move? How do they know what to do? They just do People playing games everyday, winning wars, losing lives Living without love, loving without life No one tells them how, and they just do it They just do I woke up when I realized, you lied to me No one showed me, no one told me But I see what you do, and I may not know why But you do it, you just do I get up, wash my weary face Take my place in the 9 to 5 world Ecstatic existence slipping further away Elevator full of people like me No one tells us how, we just do it We just do. - - Diamond 6/18/97 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 07:07:53 -0400 (EDT) From: Grrly1@aol.com Subject: Re: SJC: Female singers/grrl bands In a message dated 6/19/97 11:56:09 AM, you wrote: > >1) Where did this whole "grrl" thing come from? >(I have a lot of legitimately feminist friends, so what I get from a lot of >others is a"I spell it grrl, aren't I breaking ground" attitude, and it >annoys me) Well Girl sounds very innocent and not at all harmful... but Girls started calling it Grrl because they were angry... Try to get back to me before Friday, as I am venturing down to the SD area and hope to start mining for this gem then. tty'all later, - -=-Larry-=- - --------------65433A44D972BD410B7776AF-- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 07:28:32 EDT From: banana_cracker@juno.com (mike g fulcher) Subject: http://neverending.com Most of you guys/girls know what a BBS is but for those who don't check out http://neverendingcom There are special interest groups like newsgroups however flaming is moderated as well as the seven dirty words. I have no particular reason for writing this. I just really haven't posted in awhile and didn't want anyone to forget about me. Since everyone always throws their two cents in about "other" music and bands, I think that I am going to do the same. I just got a cd by the band "Sister Hazel". A buncha guys from Gainsville Flordia. Man do these guys rock! Awesome, awesome, awesome. You should all check them out. hmmm...What else? I'm going to Lilith Fair here in Pittsburgh with my MOM!! hahaha. I find that kind of amusing. She LOVES Jewel and I think that she is close to as excited about it as I am. Anytime she hears her, she's like "I CAN'T believe you are letting me go see her with you!!". So it'll be some mother/daughter bonding. Well, everyone have a GOOD day!!! I know I will. For all the NHL fans, you know that this weekend is the draft. Well, it is here in Pittsburgh. AND rumor has it that the Pittsburgh Airport is a GREAT place to be today. HA HA HA!! WOOHOO!! Over 150 guys that are MY AGE, 17 and 18!! AND they play HOCKEY!! What else could I ask for?!! I hope everyone has their red ribbon on their tree in honor of the down and out Red Wings! They'll be in our thoughts at the draft!! Have a WONDERFUL day! Love, Mandy P.S.--I know a secret. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 1997 05:33:35 -0700 From: "Larry G."
