I am a new member to the list but, I read this essay that was inspired by Jewel in one of the web pages and thought that you might like it.(this is only one paragraph of the essay). Jewel reminds us to look at ourselves and ask ourselves who we are and what we need to do to be happy. One flame among billions, she shines brightly because of the choices she made so long ago, undoubtedly much of the early seeds of life instilled within by her parents. Life is all about choices, touching others, and being touched by others each day. It's about who we really are. It's about finding our true selves and being honest about what we feel and what we believe every hour of every day. Jewel is a nexus for all of us who call ourselves Every Day Angels. In her, we see a piece of ourselves. She is as much a piece of us as we are a piece of her. And though many will flock to her concerts for other superficial reasons devoid of understanding for her message, many more of us will be reminded of the truths she sings in her passion, be strengthened by the honesty of her words, and be reminded never to give up their dreams. To read the whole essay go to http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html On this web page you can also download the whole performance of "Foolish Games" from the David Letterman show. P.S. I am looking for Angel Food, I am new to the list and do not have any, so if anybody is willing to make it just e mail me with what you have and the cost and i will get back to you. thanx. P.S.S. Does anyone know when Jewel will be performing in southern california P.S.S.S. Does anyone know an adress to send either e-mail or regular mail that Jewel might actually get. I am not looking for her personal address, knowing that she needs her privacy but, just something like a fan mail that she might actually read. Wish me luck. Right now, My Dad, my brother, and I are just getting over the aftermath of the final court date of my parent's divorce, which was probably about five weeks ago, but It's taken until four days ago for the judge to sign it off. The oddest thing about it, my Mom left us, and she is getting most of the stuff. Like, by next Friday, I think, my Dad has to come up with $5,000 dollars, as of which we are somewhat ok about coming up with. That amount is just the start of what totals $83,000 dollars over the next seven years. added to that, we are probably $40,000+ in debt. I don't have any problem in dealing with the financial situation. What really hurts me is that she doesn't realize what she does half of the time. She does half of what she does out of rage and jealousy. The other half of the things she does is either around my brother and I, or away from our family and friends. I just wish that she would get a grip on reality so that someone can get a fresh start to life. She just doesn't understand that she isn't part of our lives anymore, and it's because she is always doing outrageous things that we wouldn't let her back in either. For those of you that pray, please lift up my mother and pray that she will realize what she is doing to all of the people around her, and pray for me and my brother, and my father, that we can have peace within us, no matter what happens. I don't think Bob > Dylan would have done this. This is disturbing to me also, but for a different reason. Some one recently ventured that Jewel's next CD will knock our socks off. I agree that it will prbably be an instant million seller. But will it be an artistic triumph? One thing against that is that it's been almost a year since the original tracks were laid down. Now she has gone back to redo many of them. Some, like Foolish Games' new release, may have different producers (am I right about this?) than other tracks. The songs might get better after tweaking and tuning, but they may also get over-worked. We'l just have to wait and see. But one thing is for sure, the new CD will not be a time-capsule of Jewel's artistic development like POY and that is a dissappointment. And I agree, Atlantic's milking every last dime out of a product they originally though would only sell 50K copies is shameful. This was aggravating for me, because I have been trying to record that video for about a week now, and I even taped the countdown. I've never posted a poem before, but I feel like I have to share this "poem". It was actually going to be a song, but I don't think I have it in me to write more angry music than I already have. Anyways, It was inspired by a phone call I got from my friend from Utha. She used to be one of my best friends, and I always thought that somehow I'd end up with her. She did move away about 10 months ago, but she was supposed to come over for the summer. Last Sunday when she called, she told me that she had gotten pregnant and that she would not come this summer. I really don't know what I should do. Maybe I shouldn't call her for a while. I was supposed to go with her to Lilith Fair, but I'd say chances of that aren't good. Any of you Phoenix EDAs want to go with me??? WHAT'S THERE LEFT TO SAY I know that I sound selfish when I ask: How could you do this to me? God, I feel so split in half, Its all your fault, you see. Lately I am drowning in these pools of stupid dreams Because who you sometimes think you know, Is not exactly who it seems. I'm sorry if what I'm telling you somehow sounds absurd. Delurking w/ exciting news ;) first a short explanation about TV in Israel. If you're not interested, skip ahead to the segment after the #s. Until a few years ago, Israelis had a wide choice of one channel received via antennas (sp), supervised by the Israeli government, as well as low quality reception of broadcasts from Jordan and Cyprus. Eventually a second channel (Channel 2), managed by a group of companies and supported by ads, was created, and accepted by the law. After a while of this, a great revolution rose, in the form of cable TV, through which Israelis now recieve both Channel 1 (with two new branches) and Channel 2, as well as a family channel, a movies channel, sports channels (1 cable produced and 2 via satelite), a children's channel, MTV Europe, a culture channel (Discovery, that kind of stuff), a community channel, [V] (the music channel for Asia), CNN, BBC, Sky news, Star plus, NBC Europe, a home shopping channel, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, the Arab satelite, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Luxemburg, and India. the two new branches of Channel 1 (which I have mentioned b4) are channel 23 (which is an educational channel, and is rarely watched by anyone) and Channel 33 (which broadcasts the Knesset meetings when there are any, and runs all sorts of (usually) boring stuff when there aren't any, and is therefor even more rarely watched by anyone). And still, w/ all this channels, there's nothing to watch. ##################################### Now for the exciting part. There I was a couple of days ago, changing channels frantically because MTV had smartly decided to put a whole show on, dedicated to the Spice Goyls, when something caught my attention on Channel 33. "Hey, I know that face" I said to myself, "That's Jewel!". It took me a few painfully regretted mins to realize what's going on and leap at my VCR, change cassettes, and start recording. It was a part of a show called "Entertainment News" of unknown origin, probably somewhere in the US. The actual value of this appearence is not THAT high, as noone watchs Channel 33 (see explanation above), however, this is the first time Jewel has ever been on "proper" Israeli TV, and further, it's the first time I've seen her name typed in Hebrew, and let me tell you, it was a very strange feeling. Hopefully, this will not be a singular event, but rather the first of many appearences from Jewel on Israeli screens :). 42, Tuff - TIE relurking (: ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jun 1997 06:53:03 -0500 From: "John Thayer" Subject: Re: Bob Dylan vs Jewel John Thayer 06/18/97 06:53 AM To: jewel @ smoe.org cc: (bcc: John Thayer/MTC/TSS) From: Fett30 @ aol.com Date: 06/17/97 02:06:07 PM AST Subject: Bob Dylan vs Jewel ok, i KNOW i'm going to catch hell for this, but as a musician i can't just sit back. Who a person is inside is there in plain view if > you stop oggling at other things. Richard Bach also wrote that the first thing he looked for in a mate was physical beauty, so go figure. For what it's worth, I think that physical appearance is possibly, but not necessarily, one of the things that attracts people to one another. It's probably a major one. Unfortunately, some relationships seem to be based solely on this one aspect. IMO, people in these relationships should be called shallow, not those for whom appearance is one in a group of characteristics that attracts them to others. I saw Jerry Maguire the other day on the plane, and I would say the Renee Z. (I can't even attempt to spell her name) character was almost exclusively attracted to Jerry/Tom based on his looks. Sure, it helped that he was "a nice guy," but I think her main attraction to him was his looks. Just an example. OK, (shields up), flame away. Kris Kane responds: Hmmmmm...I guess you're right...it must be have been the phase of the moon that made me compare Jewel's talents to those of the greatest singer/songwriter of the past thirty years. And, to think that I even suggested that she has the potential to be a powerful social force into the 21st century. Sorry, I'm just crazy that way. Let's go back to discussing what kind of car she drives and how she rolls her toilet paper. No, wait a second....you almost convinced me. It wasn't the phase of the moon. I actually believe it. Jewel *is* the most talented singer/songwriter to come down the pike in quite a while. And yes, Christa, "Jewel appeals to people because of her fresh outlook on the world". And yes, Nathan, "she has a wonderful talent for writing songs (duh!), she has sufficient public acceptance for her to be recognized upon achieving this goal". And yes, David, "Dylan and Jewel are definitely multidimensional artists, and I think that there are certain parallels". And yes, Peter, "i plan on being inspired by Jewel for many years to come" And yes, Helen, "There is something about Jewel's positive attitude that works as an antedote to the negativity that prevails today. In a word, it's lovely". And yes, Igor, "Wouldn't it be better if we could go into a record store and try to decide which Jewel CD to buy rather than which artists CD we should buy". And thanks Mark for that great "Song for Bob Dylan" by Wally Pleasant and your clear and insightful point-by-point analysis. And thanks Adrian for the great Joan Baez quote about the "Dada King". And, thanks bob for what Helen described as "one of the most interesting and intelligent letters I've read in a while on this list". And yes, Adrian, "Jewel's power is in her philosophy, her way of being -- that sets her apart from many other talented musicians and makes her the 90s parallel to Dylan as a potential cultural force..." And yes, Chopped Liver, "She may not yet be the annointed one, but in my opinion she is a good candidate". Now that we've gotten all of that out of the way, let's go back to discussing toilet paper.
