People played really mean games with my head and sent me overboard. I don't go to counseling or anything because i know it doesn't work and I'm as impatient as hell. But anyway, my point.. A lot of my friends always talk about how fine she is, but they barely even talk about her songs. But these are people that don't really know her that much. They have only heard WWSYS and YWMFM on the radio and don't even care to hear her other songs. Jewel should be more careful. I'm sure she doesn't want to attract the wrong kind of fans that only like her body and yell out "Take it off!" at her concerts. I think she's done a pretty good job so far, but that dress at the Grammies was very risky. I just don't want her outer beauty (and boy does she have sooo much of that!) to over shadow her inner beauty. Mark - --- Inside my heart there's an empty room. Subject: What is required to become an EDA? There are lots of newbie requests relating to what the requirements are for *becoming* an EDA. Well, don't tell ANYBODY, but the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, NJ has finished compiling the first *official* EDA Admissions Test (acronym: EDA-Admit). And, leave it to the EDAs: a pre-release copy of the test has seemingly flown out of that "secure" facility as if on angel wings and is hereby treed! So now, it'll be easy even for the newbies and the *seniles* (<----me, Igor, and I forget who else) to pass the test. Here are the questions (don't peek, and use number 2 pencils only): 1. How many stars on Big Blue? (See how easy this is?) 2. Where is Orleans Avenue? (These are all gimmes.) 3. What is Java Joe's last name? (What, do they think we can't use the internet to find out anything we want to?) 4. Jewel:X :: Pirsig:Y What are X and Y? (ETS just loves these kinds of questions!) 5. List 6 venues Jewel played during her fall, 1996 European tour, between October 15 and November 4 (no credit for radio or tv appearances; actual venues required). (ETS loves to give "lip service" to its lack of cultural bias in its questions.) 6. Who is Jewel's booking agent? (Extra credit for address and telephone number.) 7. Which A&R person at Atlantic signed Jewel, and what was the *trick* s/he used to seal the deal? ("S/he who has not learned the lessons of his/herstory is condemned to repeat the test.") <----- direct quote from ETS BS PC "EDA-Admit for Dummies," 8th Edition) 8. What is Jewel's rising sign? (Helloo?? Can we say url?) 9. Tell us about the White Buffalo Woman. 10. What is Jewel's favorite Rugburns song? 11. Define Harris. 12. Define Martin. 13. What is a "Tom"? (I don't THINK they mean in the context of the U.S.'s ignominious history of race relations, but sometimes you can outsmart yourself at these formulaic tests!) 14. Where was Jewel born (partial credit for getting the town right; exact location is required). 15. Which of the following are true statements: a) Jewel grew up without television. b) As a child, Jewel snuck out to watch television in the barn. c) Jewel's favorite tv show while growing up was "The Flintstones." d) Jewel learned about the Beatles only after moving to San Diego. e) Until recently, Jewel thought "The Velveteen Rabbit" was a poem written by Pablo Neruda. f) The "goddess" in "Daddy, She's A Goddess" is named Selena. 16. How long do Jewel's dreams last? Show your work. 17. What FLAVOR lollipop? What brand? (If your name is Tegan, you get no credit on this question). 18. How many EDAs can fit on the Big Blue Llama? 19. How many EDAs can dance on the cap of a bottle of Rolling Rock? 20. Average the two different ages that Jewel began singing in bars; add the number of EDAs who attended Jewelstock; then subtract the number of EDAs that Jewel said were at Jewelstock. Show your work. (I think this is a trick question; I came up with a negative number. Hint: When you launch your inquiry, enter from the east.) 21. Who were the members of Jewel's first touring band, and when did they first perform together? 22. When (if ever) did Jewel first recite poetry in public? 23. "This is a new song." What does Jewel mean when she says this? 24. Which line from SIBTW was "stolen" (according to Jewel) from which line in which Bob Dylan song? (James Reach, Ade DuPlessis and Kris Kane get no credit for answering this correctly.) 25. What does it mean to be an EDA? Scoring: 24-25 -- Harris Brother 2-23 -- Clueless Newbie 1-25 -- Certified EDA Zero, zip, naught -- one-way ticket to Homer. Learn to defrost outhouse seats. Practice "pee stance" and "peace dance." Hey guys Please excuse my typos...those of you who I tlak to on IRC know that I am typo queen and those of you who just read the posts probably know all too well my typos whenever I type. Anyways I was looking through old emails of mind from the list and came across one that Crunch (aww I love you Mark) posted at the end of May about a Jewelstock reunion in the middle of July. I know that people have tons of plans this summer with Lillith Fair and Rockfest and all sorts of other stuff and that money is starting to get tight for many people (hell the only thing I have been to so far is Great Adventure and I am so totally broke...), but I think it would be so great to have a camping weekend type of thing that same weekend of last year's Jewelstock (July 17-18 or something like that). I think Mark said he wanted to explore the Woodstock area, I have never been there but it is absolutely beautiful from all that I have heard. I am more than willing to plan this weekend with a couple other people, but I have a proposal. Instead of calling it a Jewelstock reunion, can we call it EDAstock? In various posts by different people and, more directly, in something Larry Graywolf Lawyer Dude said, the "We started as fans of Jewel and then became fans of each other" comment (sorry if I misquoted...but y'all get the picture), I think that an outright EDAstock is in order here. We have had mini "-stock" get togethers all over..>Lizstock, ChelsStock, and, this Thursday, StephStock (you can STILL come if you want...just email tmiles@ptd.net for more info...please come, I love y'all to death...), and countless others. We have the EDA cover tape which has circulated (I still need a copy of that...hrmm...) and which has amazed us all. We have had spontaneous poetry readings at events, we have heard about musical, writing, visually-artistic, academic, and all sorts of talents that each and every single EDA has. We have all found the talent and capacity to love, welcome, and care inside each other. We truly have become each other's biggest fans and biggest advocates. So I think a celebration is in order. This should not be merely a Jewelstock reunion, for there are many EDAs who have joined this group after Jewelstock or who have not been able to attend. This should be a time for all of us to celebrate each other, EDAs new, old, and all of us eternal. Anyone interested? Hell, I love y'all to death, and we truly have become a family. If anyone wants to collaborate and get this thing going, then let's talk. Really. Just imagine how beautiful the weekend would be...BETTER than away-camp was when I was a little kid. Imagine Steve or Chris Moynehan strumming their guitars around a campfire as we all sing along...Puddie doing her Grease impressions, Teagen and countless other people passing around their Jewel pictures for everyone to see. We'll roast marshmallows. We'll spread around tons of hugs. We'll sing Kumbaya. And hell, I'll read to you all (sorry if I sound less than modest right now, but right now I am on one of my RARE somewhat self-esteem kicks...and besides, it is a major sign of affection for me to offer to read my poetry to people...one of my biggest signs of affection other than giving huge long warm hugs which i thrive on). Hell, we can even throw in a few boxes of tissues for all those people (like myself) who become teary eyed at anything even a fraction as beautiful as this can be... WELL, I have taken up enough of your time, but what can I say? I LOVE YOU ALL MADLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and an EDAstock would be SO cool love you all stephanie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 11:23:32 -0400 (EDT) From: JEWELFAN22@aol.com Subject: Our Juno crashed/ Shelly to Philly Hello Angels- This is Shelly, using Liz's aol account. Every time I wish Jewel would really cut loose with her voice, I find that she just kept it all in, and I thought it was really subdued. I was hoping for something like the JRTP version, because that moves me every time I hear it and I'm expecting lots of airplay from the song. Jewel's name was mentioned second on the sticker on the cd (after Smashing Pumpkins), so that leads me to believe her's is going to be the second single released from the soundtrack. Europe has a far different tradition of listening to "pop" music than does America. From the "British invasion", through Eurovision song contests, countless "one-hit wonders" (some of which have been brilliant singles), the Spice Girls and other blasts of commercial pop churning the airwaves overseas -- especially in the UK -- listeners there are more accustomed to fresh sounds and immediacy of "product". To some Brits I know, if a song is more than even a few months on the shelf its old news - -- if it was on paper it would be fish and chip wrap. So, rather than trying to introduce Europe to the wonders of Jewel through singles off Pieces of You -- now 2 years and 4 months old (which is more time that Liam and Noel Gallagher have spent on good terms with each other in their lives, probably) -- I'd suggest a different approach. Release a single (or, possibly, an EP) with brand new, and distinctly different, songs on it -- my picks would be Down and Cleveland -- sell it initially only in Europe so as to make it clear that it's not some American retread (as some sensibilities in the U.K. may consider an "old" US recording). For a while at least, this would be available in the U.S. and Canada only as an import single -- adding cachet and collectability. Then, with radio listeners in Europe feeling special and knocked out by Jewel's music, they'd be more willing to investigate POY. Especially since by the time the Down and Cleveland (or ?) tunes had finished topping the charts, Jewel's next CD (Fritz Creek Store or whatever it will be called) could be released simultaneously in America and Europe -- bringing us all together and up to date with Jewel. (This would also give everyone a chance, sooner rather than later, to hear the spectrum of Jewel's songs.) Well, that's my marketing inspiration for the day. Anyone else have ideas on what would work if we were Atlantic Records execs (AREs), and not EDAs, for a day? What I get from this is, a nice ass isn't going to sustain a relationship past two seconds, but it can spark interest. I'll tell you right now that I love my girlfriend very much but it was her looks that brought me to her. Two years later, I know her almost as well as I know myself and I love her very much. And, I'd add, have it be a recording of a live performance where Jewel really cuts loose and lets her voice fly, not one of these studio versions. "Pieces of You" has proven that it doesn't have to be a studio recording to be a commercial success. Jewel is a success in her own right. Her songwriting, her voice and especially her ability to communicate to a live audience stand on their own. Don't wall her off in an artificial environment and baffle her to death. I don't know Jewel, neither do most of the EDA's. When we consider the chosen few who have met her lucky, obviously most have no clue about her REAl personality. I'd like to believe she's as nice as I imagine her to be, but unless I meet her someday, I'll never know. Well, okay, so > you can see indirect expressions of a personality at that distance > but that's it. You make it sound like that's nothing, but you couldn't be farther from the truth. The way a person holds themselves, how they dress, how they gesture and how they communicate all reveal a great deal about who they are. These things ARE their personality. You don't know their word usage or whether or not they waterski, are accomplished writers or poets, successsful businessmen/women or engineers, but you DO get a very large exposure of their personality. Anyone who says otherwise obviously as their priorities in a person elsewhere. Body language reveals a lot of a person's fears, confidence, discomfort, arrogance, or kindness. Richard Bach wrote that your friends will know you more in the first few minutes of meeting you than your acquaintences will know in a life time. This is absolutely true. Who a person is inside is there in plain view if you stop oggling at other things. > Let's look closer at the original message... Roy said looks account > for FIRST attraction. I've seen similar relationships start the same way and end in murder. The point here is each case will be unique and each person sees different things. How the relationship turns out is up to them. Many will just see the superificial looks. A smaller number will see the personality manifest in action. And a tinier minority will see things the majority will never be able to see. The world is colorful place, but what we see depends on what we're looking for. > Just adding some perspective. *nod* Just adding some more. :) Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 15:32:18 -0400 (EDT) From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Jewel@Java Joe's Open Mike Night last night Hi all, My pal Dan F informs me that Jewel popped into Java Joe's last night for "Wendy's Open Mike Night". A lot of the time they are just looking for attention and some of you people give it to them by inudating them with mail saying that they are 'stupid' and 'shallow', why not just ignore them. When they see they don't have an audience for that type of obscenity, they will go away... Jewel is an attractive women and bound to get negativ energy in her direction, from pig-headed men. Are you saying that physical attraction means nothing or that people who are physically attracted to one another are shallow and their relationships will end in murder? I agree physical attraction can be what sparks and interest and IS HEALTHY if that isn't the only thing going in the relationship! I use the word 'hit' as defined in the Guiness Book of British Hit Singles, where a hit is a single that appears in the UK charts even for just one week at number 75. If you don't already know WWSYS debuted this week at number 52. I believe this is a very creditable position for an unknown American folk singer. It's certainly better than Sheryl Crow's debut single a few years back which only managed one week at number 66. And looking a little higher up the current UK charts, at number 40 is Beth Orton who has achieved her first top 40 entry at her fourth attempt and she's British! Regarding airplay of the single, CapitalFM the largest radio station in London have been playing WWSYS on a regular basis, and last week they were broadcasting an advert for the single describing Jewel as a "singer you will not have heard off, but one that you will not forget" So hopefully with the next European tour (more UK dates please) and the next single release (YWMFM or FG or perhaps God's Gift to Women?) I believe we can look forward to greater success over here for Jewel. Chris. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #426 ***************************
