Okay, this is just my opinion and I'm not trying to start a war but how can you like that article? IMO, that article is pretty degrading towards Jewel. Hi Rafa, Thought you might like this story. I haven't posted it to the list yet. Last Saturday, I was sitting outside of Java Joe's talking to EDA Mandy and Erick Garske. It was a few hours before the show started. Carlos Olmeda was playing that night. I hadn't heard him yet but couldn't stay for the show. But he started a sound check. At first I hear a beautiful voice coming from the stage and he was singing in Spanish, so I didn't know the song. Suddenly I recognized the song. It was YWMFM. I ran in to watch him sing it. You didn't have to understand the language to like the song. He sang it with a beautiful voice filled with feeling and emotion. When he got done, I talked to him. He said that Steve and Jewel want him to record it in Spanish. If he does, Steve can go out and buy a new house with the royalties it will bring in. Without any doubt, it would be a tremendous international hit. Igor P.S. SORRY :`( ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 1997 19:56:35 +0000 From: "Nathan" Subject: the SLAMM article It seemed that the article was criticizing that which surrounds Jewel, and not her personally. The author dwells on her breasts because, let's face it, she likes to flaunt them a bit. There's nothing wrong with a little vanity; when you've got it, why be ashamed? The reason this so interesting with Jewel is, she's a legitimate artist. This is highly unusual as far as musicians with sex appeal. Bon Jovi is a mimbo and Tom Waits is a "legitimate artist", Spice Girls are babes and The Indigo Girls are "legitimate artists". Do we see the pattern? Then came Jewel. The wonderfully angelic singer/songwriter with lyrics of pure poetry. The old soul in the 20 year old body. Whoops! Now how about that body? This can't be right, she's a devoted artist and she's sexy! So therein lies the conflict with which the media and the Johnny-come-lately fans are dealing. Then there's the Alaska thing. Here, I take issue with the author. Though she found her fame in San Diego, Jewel spent her childhood and early adolesence in Alaska. Which makes more of an impact on one's persona, their childhood or a couple of years in their late teens? Now an experience in one's teenage years can definitely bring about change. However, it is the childhood that shapes the teenager! What makes Jewel what she is is a combination of Alaska and everywhere else she's lived. Or at least, if I were her, that's how I would be affected. Anyway, knowing the general chronology of Jewel's life, would we say she's from San Diego or Alaska? My answer is Alaska. The end of the article was fitting. Yes, it's true: to some, god gives with six hands and to the rest, just one. This was an... experience... for some it was their first ride on a New york City subway (and look, you survived!) the wait for the train was long... long enough to go through a long round of "Throw the Zzand" and still enough time for Kelly to tell her amazing dream about a baby that turns into her kitten. we boarded the train, Jared and i showed chels how to "Surf the subway" We get to The bleecker street "block party" (if thats what you call it) and split up. I go with Kelly and Abel (i spend most of the day with them) and we get a pizza together for lunch and discuss Piercings (kelly is the Impaled angel) tattoos, and other various things that should not be discussed while eating. Kelly rinced her mouth with listerine, and we were on our way back outside to shop. I bought 3 CDs for $1 each. (i got a K's choice promo, a tuscadero EP and a Folk album by two girls i had never heard of, Shannon Worrell and Kristin Asbury) Steve said they all sounded like Liz phair (um... if you say so) Then we found a table selling COncert tapes. the guy told me that the last Jewel tape was JUST taken. (its okay, i probably already had that tape) then steve bought a $4 milk can full of Chupa Chups lollypops, which we ALL signed (the EDAs can get a little carried away with signing things, we're a sentimental bunch) Then we headed for the mercury lounge. on th way there tom pointed out the Angelika film center to me (its an indie film theater that i had been drooling over for a long time, i WILL go there some day) we walked... and walked... and walked... until we spotted STEVE POLTZ! i heard someone say "hey theres steve" i looked around and when i spotted him all i could say was "OHMYGOD!" we crossed the street to go stalk steve. i think we may have caught him off gaurd. he was already surrounded by teenage girls when we got there. we talked, introduced ourselves, told him we were EDAs yadda yadda... the we followed steve to the mercury lounge (hey we were going there in the first place) So we all crowded around steve, and laughed at everything he said. we took pictures. Steve signed the milk can. and kissed all the girls as he was leaving. (heehee... steve kissed me!) we then went to the famous Katz deli (it was the deli that was in that famous scene in "when harry met sally" where meg ryan faked the orgasm) i had a hotdog... and i believe erica had pudding, but i'm not sure. we went back to chels' hotel from there i think (my mind failing me at this point) and figured out what everyone is doing... we split into 3 main groups. the rugburns group (this was the over 21 people who were going to the show) The Jeckyl and hyde group (they went to a theme restaurant called jeckyl and hydes) and the Chasing amy group, we were Suppsed to go to a movie theater to see "chasing amy" this group consisted of Kelly, Steve, Abel and me. continued once again ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 1997 20:26:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Grrly1@aol.com Subject: Chelsstock Page 3 the movie was sold out, so instead we walked to a acrade, there was a laster tag room downstairs, but we didnt play laser tag, we just sat down under the blacklight and noted hwo our clothes were hlowing, my jeans looked like they were acid washed, which brought us into a corus of "Rocker girl". we left after finding out that we didnt have the winning raffle tickets to win a trip to the carribean (oh darn!) we walked a lonh time more and came to a huge Picture of jewel hanging on the MTV building advertizing that she will be playing aty the MTV movie awards (we all kneeled down and prayed to the mighty Jewel ;) we then got on another train and went back to the mercury lounge to see what was going on over there. we spotted stinky outside with Amy, and eric... Steve immediatlyu wished he hadnt left his signed milk can with chels. Kelly presented stinky with a bottle of Evian for him to sign. he wrote "Oh how big it is, i love you. Jeff stinky" haha. after trying again to get into the show we left and tried to get to the last showing of Chasing amy at the angelika, but it wasnt for another hour, and we didnt want to wait. so we went back to toms hotel. (Hotel??? dude, this is a CLOSET!) we found Rachel and tom o'brien snuggling on the bed, while erica was asleep in the closet (the room had a closet but no bathroom) we must have stayed in the room for 2 hours... we ordered pizza and ahem... beverages... then kelly and russ left to catch their trains. i was getting very board. so i suggested that Steve, abel and i go for a walk. we went to a small grocery store and bought more... Beverages. we sat down in front of a closed store to finish our drinks and then we walked around... got a bit lost... and ended up in front of chels' hotel. but decided not to bother her. so we tried to find our way back to toms hotel, and after about an hour we actually did find it. On the way back we found discarded passes to a billboard party and Abel was given a pink ribbon by a very generous young man (hehe Abel, i had to do it!) i used the ribbon to tie abels hair up ("aww... doesnt he look cute?") we went back to tom miles' hotel FINALLY and found everyone either sleeping or very drunk. so tom o'brien drove us all home (with the exception of jared who passed out on floor of the hotel room) In the car we noticed that the sun was coming up... that was very cool. i walked in the house at 4:42am, and got on the computer... hmmm strange, no one was online... wonder why ;) i woke up at 5pm today ;) all in all a wonderful and memorable night. It starts off when i woke up at 10am. (i went to sleep at 1am the night before, and thats very early for me) Tom (tomtom) O'brien came over ON TIME at 11am. (yes note the "on time", its not a usual occurance that EDAs are on time for anything) We got to Chelseas hotel and spotted Ericas yellow hat. then we saw everyone else. i had met most of them previously. The people i had not met were Kelly, Abel and CHELS. chels was a sweety... i didnt recognize her at first, but she jumped up and hugged me. thats went i realized who chels was. and then i looked at the other two and we introduced ourselves. Abel is VERY quiet. it took alot to get him to open up for us. Kelly is a very interesting person, and has tons of stories to tell. We then took the trip to Central park. i was afraid it would rain, but it didnt! we passed around the fruit and Bree (ick!) Looked at photos of... well of everything, Eric (bond, eric bond)'s pictures from his trip to alaska. (no he didnt make the homage to the kilcher farm) and then we looke dta all the pictures from the Great EDAdventure (uh huh tammy, SURE it was the cameras fault ;) then there was a little guitar playing by Erica And Steve (when is there NOT guitar playing at an EDA gathering?). We ate hot dogs and Mentos (Kelly: "Its strange, i came over here for ice cream, but i ended up with a hotdog") jared wrestled with tammys little girls (i think he enjoyed it a little too much ;) then i played with puds hair (i played with everyone hair at some point in the day) We then made our way to FAO shwarts and spotted a huge assorment of Blue M&Ms of every shade of blue. i was then on the search for any kind of blue putty or slime. which abel and i found later in the nickoleon section of the store. We found a wonderful little invention called "Zzand" its a mixture of sand and some kinda blue stuff, it smelled like suntan lotion. anyways, we had a blast with the zzand... (Abel thank you SOOO much. i just wish you had let me pay for half of it) Outside we passed the Zzand around to anyone without a squimish stomach. hehe. Chels informed us that there was a Patti rothberg concert going on at a block party. so tammy and rob said goodbye, and we headed back to chelseas hotel to make phone calls. We called Rachels boyfriend, and we called Russ, and ericas mom ("HI MOM") russ was in central park... looking for us (hahaha, "i'll meet you in central park!" yeah right. do you know how big that place is?) anyways, Kelly and I decided to look for REM and Alanis morrissette, we dragged Abel along with us. we had an inside tip that REM was staying on the 32nd floor, we did not find REM or alanis but we DID find a tray of Room service food that we convinced ourselves could not have belonged to anyone other than the guys in REM. We Went to the Pent house pool at look out the window (what kind of genius puts a pool on the 42nd floor?) Kelly was amazed at the view of the park. and on our way out of the pool room we spotted the "Pool rules" sign listing the many and sometimes strange rules. continued... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 1997 21:09:24 -0700 From: red_ranger@juno.com (Nick the blured Angel) Subject: Jewel stuff I would LOVE to get my hands on some Jewel stuff. Skip to end of message if you've already read the original post.) Hi all, I'd like to take this opportunity to explain my new project idea called "Future Folklore". There's been many great EDA parties around the country. Some of these had incredible entertainment provided by other San Diego area musicians such as The Rugburns, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel & Gregory Page. (All friends of Jewel, by the way) In the case of the Hot Dog Festival (HDF), thrown by the Morales Family in Dana Point, Ca, Steve & Jeff (aka Stinky) from The Rugburns dropped by & played a short but wonderfully unique set. There's many brand new songs (some still have unidentified titles) & those who were there can testify it was quite unlike any Rugburns show of late. Shortly after that, an impromtu EDA Cafe (EDAC) was thrown together at The Snyder family's home in Boston,Ma. Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel cancelled a gig in Albany & joined us for an incredible night of music & EDA hilarity. I'm sure Cindy Lee & Elizabeth will agree it was a highlight of their tour. It was certainly the longest gig of the tour! (I'd also like to say that any hardcore "Pet Sounds/Smile era Brian Wilson" fans will be absolutely blown away by Cindy Lee's new "keyboard" material! I personally love "Antarctica", "Missing Link","Aquamarine" & "She Rides The Wild White Horse" more than any other songs I've heard by anyone this year!) I plan on distributing (free of charge, of course) the 1st two volumes of a new ongoing tape tree series that will contain all the performances from both of these events. These particular EDA events are becoming legendary & thus the name "Future Folklore"..... These recordings will be different than the elaborate authorized Jewel recordings that we've treed in the past. Both of these events were recorded without the use of a mixing desk & are more reflective of the actual events. The music is still crystal clear but you also hear the EDA interaction (as well as the birds & ocean at HDF!). Tegan Godwin made the "ambiant" HDF recording & its really quite nice & captures some of the spirit of this historically significant EDA gathering. At EDAC, Phil & I collaborated on last minute equipment, but it worked out well. We ran a seperate mic on vocals, one on instruments & one on the room so everything was captured clearly. (If any techies are curious about the recording techniques utilized, write to me privately.) Its also important to note that the musicians have all been incredibly generous enough to authorize the release of these recordings for this project. I have two goals for this project: I certainly hope to turn more EDAs on to these other San Diego artists. They can all benefit from our continued support. But more than that, I want to share a little of that "x factor" that happens when EDAs get together. There's something very special going on that I want to see continued. Lovable Lawyer Larry said it best: "We all began as fans of Jewel & then became fans of each other". It's looking like Mike is gonna take the big plunge & administrate this free tape tree once again so that's now together. Dennis Harris is busy with j-card design & I'm sure they'll be mind blowing, as usual. He was at both events & has many photos from both to incorporate into the j-card graphics. These volumes of "Future Folklore" will consist of two 100 minute cassettes. Instructions will be posted in a few weeks & then sign-up will begin. This tree will be different & we're working out exact procedure still. It's very important to me to include the Rugburns list & the CLB list, as well as the EDAs this time. Logistics are being worked on. (Please wait for these instructional posts BEFORE requesting copies or volunteering participation in this tree.) Following this message is the tentative track listings. This music is really something special. If this is successful, I'm willing to donate my resources to continue this series on an ongoing basis. I'm hoping "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2 will be enthusiastically recieved. If nothing else, I sincerely hope this series will help encourage more events like this in the future. I think the people disliking the article are misinterpreting it. It sometimes is hard to tell what an author is trying to get across when you read something rather than hearing it. The author of the Slamm article is trying to get people to get over the whole Alaskan yodelling good girl with big tits image that she has. Almost every article found on Jewel talks about her upbringing in Alaska, and that Grammy dress that showed her well-endowed self. The Slamm article was something different that was much more interesting to read. But it's all in the way you interpret it. And not to pick on you but... weren't you the one who also found problems with the JOKING ops in the #jewel channel?? *hugs* Emily ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 1997 22:47:28 -0400 (EDT) From: AngelKM97@aol.com Subject: Kelly's version of chelsStock, part 2 ...okay, so we are all waiting for the subway, and after having a heart attack cause I didn't know where my back pack was, we got to the mercury lounge, and who do we see on the street but...STEVE POLTZ! I was soo shy cause I never met him before, and I was a little mad cause I had nothing for him to sign, and I was too shy to ask him to sign a piece of Post it paper. I did get my picture taken with him though, and he kissed me on the cheek, along with everyone else. Let me just say one thing about Steve Poltz...for a guy that is way too old for me, he is certainly a hottie! Okay, so after the Mercury, we went to Chelsea's hotel, and we split up into groups...the over 21 people that were going to the burns show, the rich people that could afford to go to Jeckyl and Hyde's, and then the under 21 people...Me, thirza, Abel, Steve and Russ. The 5 of us planned to go see Chasing Amy, but It was sold out by the time we got there, so we got on the subway to try to go to the Angelika place to see chasing amy, but it was showing too late. So we went to the Mercury to try to sneak into the Burns show, where we met Jeff aka stinky, who was very nice as well. He introduced himself to me, shook my hand and smooshed my face for a good 10 seconds. Then he saw his ex girlfriend or something, and we left. We then went to the laser tag place, and sang rocker girl cause our jeans looked acid washed in the balcklight. After not winning our trip to the carribean, we went back to the subway, where the bitch in the booth yelled at Steve and the girl behind her for no reason...RUDE!! The dumb lady told Steve to hop the turnstile, which he did, and I was afraid he was gonna get arrested by the transit police. We found our way back by Tom's hotel, and stopped for pizza on the way, which by the way, was the ABSOLUTE BEST PIZZA I have ever eaten. we got to tom's closet-like hotel room to find Erica asleep in the buggy closet, and Rachel and Tom O'brien cuddling on the bed. We hung out a little more, and Erica and I sang "Look at me I'm sandra Dee" from grease. At about 2am, russ and I had to go to catch our trains, and I got home at about 330am. This was my first gathering and I loved everyone... I am now an official "Gathering-a-holic" I have this crazy feeling I left some stuff out, but it's nothing you guys won't read from everyone else. Well. I have to go to bed now, cause I have to go to work at 8am...have a good nite everyone!! Love, Kelly, the impaled angel {\o/} /_\ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 1997 22:54:58 -0400 From: "Tom O'Brien" Subject: Chelstock: ok, I guess I'll chime in here, too Part I) Well, you've heard all of the specifics from a few different point of views. Here's mine.Let me just say that, not only did I pick up Thirza ON TIME, but it was exactly on time 11:00 on the dot.So, we make it to the Parker Meridien for the familiar game of "Let's meet old friends and make some new ones." I tried to point out to everybody that we were right across the street form the Italian Restaurant that Billy Joel based "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" on, but everybody looked at me like I had three heads, except Kelly, who went to the same High School as Billy Joel. Then we go to Central Park, just to hang. Then, we walk to FAO Schwartz to meet Chelsmom and Chelsdad. Everyone goes in, except me, Tom Miles, and (wow, I'm drawing a blank as to who went with us, Anthony and Stevfe, I think?). Anyway, we go to help Tom check into his hotel room. Not a bad place, all things considered. And the ladies at the front desk sure made up for any other problems. :-) Well, we make it back to FAO Schwartz and begin the day long game of "What do we do next?" I heard someone mention Patti Rothberg and a block party/street fair at 3:30. I think this is very cool, consider the fact that it is know 3:00 and think "wow, we should get moving." I then spent the next fifteen minutes trying to figure out if anyone knew where we were walking to. We end up in Chelsea's hotel room to toss around the now famous Zzand (horrid stuff, really.) ... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jun 1997 23:04:58 -0400 From: "Tom O'Brien" Subject: Chelstock: I guess I'll chime in here, too (Part II) So, we're in the hotel room and we beep Russ, who it ends up is looking for us in Shepard's Meadow. He makes it to the hotel in seemingly record time. We all subway it down to the street fair, which we had aimed to get to at 3:30. (We got there at five). We all split up, then meet back at six. (By the way Thirza, Eric got the last Jewel tape from the bootleg stand.) Me and Eric taught Rachel the fine art of Girl Watching. ("Hey Tom, 9 O'Clock" "Umm, Eric, is that 9 O'Clock for you or for me?") Then the whole Steve Poltz thing happened. Then we head back Chelsea's hotel room. Me, Erika and Rachel went to Jekyl and Hyde's. It's a real cool theme restaurant with like monters and stuff. I'll let Rachel tell you the specifics about it. ("Is it cold in here or"...oh never mind) Then the three of us head back to Tom's hotel room to wait for the others. We had the key and at some point we realized that the other group of people had the wrong address for the hotel. (D'oh). The three of us are there for a couple of hours until the others start showing up. I can't tell you what went on with me and the two girls in the room, because it would violate Internet Pornongraphy laws, but let's just say that Erika ended up in the closet. ;-) (just kidding). Russ, Steve, Kelly, Abel and Thirza finally show up, just as me and Rachel start falling asleep (Erika was already knocked out). They come in the room and see Erika asleep in the closet and the only thing the could think to ask is, "Why does Erika have X's on her hands?" ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #421 ***************************
