It may not worry her, but she *does* sing, >"Who will save your soul after all the ____ that you told?" > Isn't that line supposed to be, "Who will save your SOULS after all THOSE ____ that YOU'VE told?" Just a little thing that I've caught. I think that they should check out their trivia questions before they ask other people to answer them. Okay, so It was just a little mistake. :-) Westley Dent westleyd@juno.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 1997 19:19:23 +0000 From: "Nathan" Subject: NJC: this thread about musical style vs. style in music Since I joined the list a few weeks ago, I've probably made apparent my tendency to have an opinion on EVERYTHING. So here's my opinion on this current thread about some performers putting style over substance... I believe that with any music, the question one must ask one's self is "why do I believe this music was made?" If the answer is, "this music was made as a vehicle to fame and adulation", then my suggestion is stop the CD, put on some Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, Charles Mingus, Jewel, Dave Matthews, hell ANYTHING that documents a person's soul, and try again. However if the answer is "this music was made because the artist performing it dearly loves music and wanted to contribute to the art," then you've found a winner. These musicians are playing or singing or writing from the heart. This is an excerpt from an interview with Robert Fripp of King Crimson on what "playing from the heart" means to him: This would imply that the playing was an act of commitment. In other words, is this true? The criterion which I apply when listening to any musician, or the work of any artist, is simply the question, Is this true? If a musician is true, despite whatever orientation or nature of person they are, if it's true to them, to me it's all convincing. - -- Guitar Player July 1995 So before U2 gets bashed for using additional media to express their message, and before we all drool all over Jewel for having a style evolved out of poverty, let's get back to the heart of the matter: music. If a person makes music as an act of commitment, not as a hobby (which true art never is), not only for financial gain, not as a ticket to fame, but as a tribute to the art they love, then that music is true. That's why Steve Poltz is as valid as John Coltrane or Robert Fripp. Each is a musician because they love music. Conversely, when music is performed by people who didn't write (or rearrange) it, it is usually pretty much invalid. For instance, will Celine Dion go down in history for anything other than how much money she made for her record company? That is, will she be known for her loyal fans, critical acclaim, trend-setting, generation representation, song craftsmanship, instrumental virtuosity, genre bending/creating)? Not likely. Someone like Jewel, on the other hand, is a truly gifted songwriter, she is like nothing else on a top 40 chart, and she has some of the most loyal fans in the world, including me.
