She has a strong voice, and beautiful lyrics. though she isnt anything like jewel Imho... she is definetly more on the "Rock" side of folk. i dont know that many artists so it would be very hard for me to make a fair comparison. This is the CD that i have been falling to sleep to for the last few weeks. its very soothing for some reason... even though its not soft music. (i find jewel very hard to fall asleep to though.) after listening to Zoe's "Hammer" for awhile i went out and bought another album by her. its from the early 90s (1991 i believe) and i have to say it is in no way comparable... her style has changed dramatically since then. her first album "Scarlet red and blue" is very much like alot of the other early 90s pop music. its sort of "inspirational pop" although the lyrics are still extreemly poetic, the music just didnt touch me as much as they do in "hammer". Anyways, i just thought i'd write about this terrific artist because no one else seems to know who she is. so go out and buy the album! I almost didn't get the chance to see her because of transportation problems but i finally made it :-) She is an outstanding live performer, she is humble and funny on stage, and you just can't help liking her for it :-) i really don't know the songs too much but she only played about 30-40min set but there is another thing :-) I got to meet her after her set, i waited outside where they were selling her CD and i asked the lady there if she would be coming back out to maybe sign some CD's? and she said that her guitarist (who is the nicest guy) would be coming out and sell the CD's and talk to fans, well he did come out and i talked to him for a little while till he asked me if i wanted to meet her in her room, well i said.. umm.. SURE! :-) We walked to her room and she was so nice to me, i began the conversation saying if she knew Dan Stark and she said " Are you an EDA?" and i said yes :-) she is really into the EDA thing :-) i was very pleased with that, we talked for awhile and then i asked her if she would be palying the Toronto lilithfair, and the answer is no.. which is too bad.. but she was excited about playing in Detroit, where i just might go see her :-) Finally she signed my CD with "To Gian, Always great to meet EDA'S" and she drew little angel wings around it :-) and then something that i could not make out, it looks like it said.. Love and Fight.. which i don't really know what means :-) but it was so awesome to meet her, she also liked my name ;-) Anyway, that was my exciting night and i will also be seeing her again on Saturday along with Dan Stark, Mia Vlah, Steve Ito and some other toronto based Eda's, can't wait. :-) i think that counts as an official EDA event ;-) possibly called, ToroTaraStock ;-) (Steve Ito named it) :-) btw, sorry for the NJC :-) take care... - -Gian- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 1997 03:11:31 -0400 (EDT) From: gegertha@tiac.net (Chris Snyder) Subject: Boston Harborlights Aug 29th info Hi Angels I've already posted details so I'll just give a quick version. "I don't think cynicism's smarter, it's just safer," declares a characteristically defiant JEWEL, on the subject of the raw, heartfelt songs that grace her debut LP, 'Pieces of You'. And she can afford to be smug. Two of those songs, the uplifting 'Who Will Save Your Soul?' and the tender 'You Were Made for Me' have recently shot their way up the US Top Ten. She's currently on the cover of Rolling Stone. She's been feted by the likes of Neil Young and Bob Dylan (who let her tweak his nose), and even Smokin' Bill Clinton had her 'round for a bit of a campfire singalong at one of his inaugural balls. Things are clearly on the up for the 23-year-old singer-songwriter who was, not so long ago, eking a demoralising living waiting tables in San Diego and living on carrots and peanut butter in the back of her van. Is the smell of success sweet?=20 "Even half an hour of a bad show is better than three hours of waitressing," she grimaces. "But yeah, it's fun to see all the people kiss my butt that said would they play my records of the radio over their dead bodies." Two and a half years of hard touring =D0 consisting of "opening up for punk and goth bands and playing tiny clubs and hating life; doing 40 cities every 30 days and driving myself everywhere in a rental car" =D0 later, Jewel's reward has come in the shape of four million album sales, and a devoted fanbase coast to coast. "I'm not real comfortable with it,' she sighs, with the pained air of a lo-fi shrinking violet. "But a friend of mine who is a movie actor said 'it's an adjustment well worth making'."=20 Ah. That'll be Sean Penn, with whom Jewel has had a much-publicised affair. But enough scurrilous tongue-wagging; what about the none-less-rock poems that litter the album sleeve? (One is called 'Las Vegas', and it's great: "Women who suck/their cigarettes/as though they were/giving their/hatred head".) Why are these tacked on as an afterthought? A torrent of sincerity wells up: "It was more out of humility than an afterthought. I've always been such an accidental writer. I never thought I was a songwriter. I never thought I was a poet. Bukowski's a poet! Jesus, I'm a kid living in a car!"=20 by Kitty Empire=20 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 1997 07:40:12 -0400 (EDT) From: TJtalken@aol.com Subject: NJC: ellen flashback i was sitting watching a rerun of ellen wednesday, and had flashbacks of previous shows before all the lesbian hype. i turned to capello "isn't this the show that they used to spend a bunch of time in her apartment?" guess capello knew what i was talking about or wanted to shut me up?..."yes, duff" so isn't this the show that on VH-1 for awhile they were having tv shows come on and they would watch a bunch of videos and talk about them. i have no idea what it was called but i distinctly remember watching at least twice ellen and crew watch the jewel video for WWSYS and ellen commented that she realllllllly liked it? okay sort of irrevalant and maybe it was a dream..but capello's here to back me up. it did happen, even if it was only in my dreams. any further comments should be directed to me personally :-) duff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Jun 1991 19:03:17 +0800 From: "Andrew Watson" Subject: #Jewel IRC Channel Hi everyone, I have a Jewel channel on IceNet (#Jewel of couse:). God. That's all I really have to say at the moment ( but it certainly won't stop me from saying more ! ) First of all, I've decided there's no way a review of a Rugs show can be done like a review of a Jewel show. Things don't show up in my mind in the right order. The show was almost 3 hours long. The bar didn't have any Jim Beam, so they were doing shots of tequila.. :) My God, I don't even really remember most of the show. But, um, I DO remember the highlights... After about 2 hours of the show, Steve was GONE :). Completely out of it :). He was saying they were gonna get kicked out, four years in a band and this is what it comes to, blah blah blah. I requested ABC Song AGAIN, and Steve said he'd play it for me. But they got lost somewhere near the end of the song. and just started jumping around the stage... then Steve looked at me, took his guitar off, crossed the stage to me, and began unbuttoning his shirt. He kept staring at me and started rubbing his chest... and then took his belt off. THEN he pulled his pants down. ( Great boxers, might I add :) ).Then he started pulling his boxers down.... Now, girls, you KNOW all the cool parts of a man's body that you can see when they pull their boxers down from the side. And NOT what everyone is thinking, I'm talking belly button, that awesome little rise guys have on their hips... OK, I'm getting carried away. Let's just say... I saw everything of Steve's EXCEPT :). Then he hopped back over to the mic ( pants still down ), ( or actually maybe this was part of anther song, it all blends together ) ,stuck his naked butt out, and told everyone to line up and spank him :). Around the end of the show, they spent a lot of time just lying on the stage. At one point Steve was over John, and trying to drool into John's mouth. And tons of other things I'm SURE I'm forgetting...oh, Stinky walked around and used the ENTIRE room as a drum set :). Anyway, when Steve jumped off the stage, he jumped towards the EDAs. I think he hugged a guy before me, then came over to me and gave me easily one of the BEST hugs EVER. And a kiss on the cheek. When John came down from the stage, he walked over to me and said, "Hey, sweetie! " and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I didn't think he remembered me, but he said "Of COURSE I remember you", which made me say, "Oh yeah, prove it ?" He said, "You baked us cookies, you went to about 3 or 4 Jewel shows in a row"... so he DID rememeber me :) . Anyway.. my God, it was an incredible show. AND the music was great too, even if I DID forget to talk about it. I had the hugest headache on earth on the way home, and it took me a long time to get to sleep, but now I'm ALL ready for tonight's show . YAY ! The Rugburns are utterly and completely insane. If there was ever a question genius borders on insanity, the Rugburns have removed it. Together Steve, John and Stinky are a musical powerhouse to be reckoned with, if only they weren't so insane. Between Steve taking his pants off, mooning the audience of 60 or so, and encouraging people to spank him, and Stinky running round using everything in sight as a drumset, it is their showmanship as much as their musical genius that makes the Rugburns so entertaining to watch. As time went on and the Rugburns circumed deeper and deeper to the effects of beer and Tequilla, a darker incarnation of Yakko, Wakko, and John surfaced. The Rugburns have in one night re-defined what insanity as all about. No script could have matched what we saw this evening- some of it you couldn't ever show on TV. This was my first Rugburns show, and without question THE most bizarre show I have ever been to. Oddly enough the evening started well and normal enough. Steve performed a lovely rendition of You Were Meant for Me and Luca (ala Suzanne Vega) and a number of tunes alternating between ballads and rockier folk to heavy rock. He sang songs to people on the spot, improvising as he went. He even sang a Birthday tune he improvised to a girl in the audience named Stephanie as he went along. The folks in the Paradise tried to get them to quit at one point, but Steve said hell no [in much more colorful language paired with obscene gestures] and kept on going. From renditions of Gilligan's Island in folk to hard rock, to flipping between cover songs of other artists every 20 seconds, the Rugburns were the incarnation of plastered-rock. Their antics ranged from amusing, hilarious, and amazing, to downright nasty, disgusting (Steve trying to spit in John's mouth), and profane (John pretending he was giving Steve oral sex on stage). It was all joking around and in good fun, but the absolute insanity of the Rugburns and their utter unpredictability (I've been informed this was definitely not a normal Rugburns show), makes them an oddly compelling group to watch. Where genius meets insanity, the Rugburns draw their power. Some of them would, but not many in my opinion. > -Kelly :) In my opinion,a whole lot. Just because I like Jewel doesn't mean I think her style is the epitome of good. It doesn't even mean I don't like other bands/artists better. Who cares if Bono wouldn't have made it without U2? He's just as good as Jewel in my not-so-humble opinion. He has U2, and they made it. Without the big screens. That's something they always wanted to do, but haven't had the money for. Just because it's flashy doesn't mean it detracts from the music, or that it's mindless drivel. U2 made an artistic statement about the spread of commer- cialism into rock. So what if it costs millions? Not only does that enhance the irony, it IS within their budget. In today's art world, we're witnessing a breakdown of the barriers between media. Artists like Jewel are excellent reminders of how good one medium (music) can be. But why not two? If you can except a musical (i.e. The Wizard of OZ), why can't you accept Pink Floyd's space rock concerts? They aren't just blinding lasers. Roger Waters and Co. went to Art School for a reason. Marcel DuChamp pieces are thoughtless abstraction. Pink Floyd shows are performance art. I plan to go into film and theater. I also plan to be involved in music. If the band I start with today made it as far as U2 (laugh at this. Trust me, it's funny). I would most definitely merge the two. There are performers in Boston performing rock opera at music clubs. It's called growth people. Exploration? Ever hear these words?
