I realize that this has been addressed earlier, but just read it for myself. In the June issue of Pulse (a magazine put out by Tower Records) there is a brief interlude about Atlantic Records developing a musical and a soundtrack based on the Civil War. It does state that Jewel is a signed on member of the project. Unfortunately, with the way the article is written, it is hard to determine whether Jewel is a part of the musical, or simply the soundtrack, and I believe this is where the confusion was before on the list. Did we ever come to a conclusion based on any valid information? Just curious. Well, that's just it isn't it? We don't know for certain and it's probably because we see postings of Jewel's schedule and then know what happens when she gets sick that these questions are raised. I'd like to believe that you're right, but the problem with logic is what we believe is irrelevant if the facts are otherwise. What's probably most troublesome is that we actually see the manifested effects, effects that I know a bit too well because I know what extreme lack of sleep did to me over a prolonged period of time. I really screwed myself badly not because I didn't have the will or didn't believe what I was doing was right, but because the biolgical machine just couldn't keep up. I hope you're right, but all of the classic warning signs were there and felt it was a bit too personal to ignore. > Sleep deprivation is not a good thing, but it's something i got through A > LOT!!! I am a very busy person, and during the school year, I am probably > just as busy as Jewel is when she's on the road. I know I've never been on > a tour like that, but for most of the year, I'll get about 5 hours of sleep > every night, with the exception of about one night a week where I'll get a > reasonable amount of sleep. Hey Emily, that's not healthy! You should get more sleep! All in all your schedule isn't too horribly crippling but there's nothing in Jewel's schedule which could have indicated she was on a similar schedule to you. 5 hours is pretty decent each night for a minimum with one day to get a good full sleep cycle, but posts from some of the European EDAs indicated that the problem may be chronic with as little as 3 hours each night. The fact EDAs are thinking that she's tired when she performs is definitely not a good sign. We all love Jewel, but ask yourself how tired you have to be for lack of sleep to show through? We can usually hide 5 hours of sleep each night pretty well. It's a lot harder to hide 3 or even less. I guess the point is, she shouldn't at all seem tired when she performs. The fact some people are thinking that she's tired (from interviews, performances, etc) is something that's almost unheard of when you talk about any kind of public appearance. I ran conventions where I survived off of 4 hours on a good day, but come day 3 of only 3-4 hours a night and it's really REALLY hard to hide it. It just doesn't happen or manifest itself so obviously unless it's happening chronically. I think you can agree that it's hard to be your best day after day on such little sleep. > And I think Jewel is able to at least get > this. She is still dead tired, I know that, but I wouldn't worry too much > about her. Well, I hope you're right. I'm seeing a lot of warning signs in her past 2 tours, but I really hope you're right. And Emily, try to get more sleep! :) You're not doing too bad with 5 hours/night, just don't go below that. As long as you're getting one good 7-8 hour block a week you should be ok, but try to get more sleep anyways! I know I'm just not the same person without a full 7 hours of sleep. > She has plenty of time over the summer to recooperate and she's > doing what she loves to do. *nod* I'm very glad she's resting now. I definitely don't think there's any question that she's doing what she loves to do, but again my point from before is that though her spirit is indominable, the biological machine isn't. You can push yourself to do things because you feel they are just and right and love every minute of it, but it doesn't mean that you'll be healthy because of it. The Will can push the human body to go so far, but when things start to break, they will break not because the Will isn't there, but because the machine itself can't go any farther. > Even though it's hard for her to get through > the day sometimes, I think we all must agree that she would much rather be > touring endlessly than being a waitress and not fufilling her dreams. Well, I don't think there's any doubt that's true. :) I guess the concern I have is for anyone (this means you too Emily!) who's pushing themselves a bit too hard and placing themselves in harms way doing it. A very close friend of mine is going on 2 hours of sleep a night and has been chronically ill for the past year catching basically everything under the sun she's exposed to. She basically runs 2 businesses and just can't seem to get the sleep and is on so many prescription drugs (an effect of pneumonia) that some of them are essentially killing her. She has problems breathing and doesn't have the strength to survive some days at all. It's something that I don't want to see happen especially to anyone here so everyone take care of yourselves ok? Everyone has to take time outs at least once in a while to rest- including Jewel. I know it is inner beauty that matters the most in life and being completely beautiful looking can put you on a lonely pedestal sometimes but to me it is worth it. To me inner beauty is secondary to outer beauty because that is something you can always change and improve, but your appearance you can not (you can alter it slightly but you can not be a completely different body). If you are an ugly (according to society's standards) body then there is nothing you can do because some people will never give you a chance because of that fact. Why? I have no clue, that is just the superficial world we live in. Now if you caught me on another day I would say the exact opposite but I tonight a lot of really perfect looking guys came into the store and it just would be nice to be one of them sometimes. I like myself, I like my personality, this isn't a self-esteem thing, it just would be nice sometimes. =| Yeah, I know I'm going to get a lot of angels saying, "I don't care how I look" but inside you know you do. Everybody wants to be desired by others if not by your personality, your looks. With that in mind, what do other angels think about this? I know most of you will respond with the proverbial "inner beauty is what matters most" and all that good stuff, but what do you really think if you think about it long and hard? Would you trade yourself to be someone else (not necessarily meaning that all good looking folk are bad souls too, I know many good souls who also happen to be totally attractive, and they are the lucky ones). =) Well, take care and have a great day angels. One of the things I have admired the most about Jewel is how she has been able to be so sucessful with only her voice and a guitar. She hasen't needed backup singers, bands, orchastras, or big special effects like the rest of the artists out there today. She has been able to inspire so many people with out all of that kind of stuff. More bands have been added to the line-up. On Friday....THIRD EYE BLIND and STORYVILLE have been confirmed. Plans for Sunday have diverted from the waterpark to camping and festivites at a local lake. Seems the local waterpark was too expensive for most to afford and we wanted more people to be able to join the festivites on Sunday. The RV will be there on Sunday and you all are welcome to join the fun. The lake will be disclosed soon. A little more info on camping at RF and the RV. Since the show on Saturday won't be over till about 1:00 am I am 90% sure that we won't have to leave until Sunday afternoon from the Speedway. That means you all are welcome to stay at the EDA site until then which is where we will be. Hotels are mostly full so if you want to go to a hotel at 3 in the morn on Sun after the show you better call em now, otherwise you are welcome to save a few bicks and camp with us. The RV will be there for sure. I was able to work a deal with em. I have figured that if everyone chips in about $20 this will cover the RV, food and drink for the whole weekend, and and the campsite related costs. I will be BBQing on Friday and will have food there for Sat so we won't have to stop in the middle of any bands on Sat. You don't neccisarily have to sleep in the RV any day the whole weekend but might find that is is nice to have to take a shower in, use the kitchen, electricity to dub, Air Conditioning to get out of the hot sun, etc..... We will have it through Monday morning and all are free to stay in it at RF or the campsite. If you count the cost to camp and buy food for both days it would be well over $20. $30 for camping and maybe $20 to $50 for food. So $20 will be a big savings if I can get the support. We will arrange a place to meet for those who are camping on Friday so they can ride in the venue with the RV and not have to pay the $30 camping fee. This will also save you. I did have to make the deposti today and will have to pay for it before I leave so if anyone is able to send their contribution early that would REALLY HELP. I don't have that much money layin around. If everyone would like to send in their requests for food and beverages for the weekend I will do my best to accomadate everyone; ie soft drink of choice, beer, food preferences, favorite munchie, etc........ Not that I am not concerned about anyone who seems ill with their health, but the reality that you posted is quite nice to see. I too, am a college student. I also work a full 40 hour business week (which puts school at night on a full-time basis as well). It is certainly a RARE occasion that I get over 4 1/2 hours of sleep...and I function just fine. So, for all that are worried...please don't take it too seriously. I hope you are all doing fine. When is VH1 going to start airing the actual video for "Foolish Games"? Does anyone know? Still, the Crossroads performance is a good one. Also, does anyone have the track listing for the "I Shot Andy Warhol" soundtrack? I ordered it from a CD club and I'm curious as to what's on it (Other than Jewel). Thanks to all for being so helpful in answering all the questions that I have had! Thanks a lot! It was her (guitarless), a Cello and violin I believe and a piano(ist). I'd never seen this before, but it was awesome. I was at my sisters, it came on (they were waiting for Duncan Sheik), and they were about the change the channel when I threatened their lives. The performance was awesome, and she looked absolutely goregous. I don't think I've seen look this well before. Anyway... I am Paul Jarvis from Mississauga, Ontario. I bought pieces of you a couple years ago and loved it from the start... Well, I first saw Jewel on May 3, 1996 at the Opera House. Me and my friends (I like bad grammar if you must no) got front row centre in the general admission. I could have touched her if I had so desired. She rocked, and I got a pick. That was pretty cool. On Thursday March 6, 1997, me and my friends (hey Nathan and Allie!!!) got the brilliant idea to bring her water colored roses (for painters) and find some way of giving them to her. When she was singing racecar driverm, she forgot the words and I shouted them out (so did Nathan, he did so with a bit more pizzazz though). When she was singing painters, she forgot the very part about water colored roses!!!!!!! Well, I just got up and yelled the lyrics out!!!! She saw me (we had REALLY good seats) and called me up on stage. My friends and I got to be on stage with Jewel! We all gave her the flowers and I got the hold the lyrics of painters while she sand.... That was really neat and possibly one of the best nights of my life, I got the talk to Jewel!!!! She knows (or knew for a brief moment) my name! It was funny, when she said'hi Paul', the audience said 'hi Paul' too! That's all... Yet just because you do the above doesn't mean you can't live. I have realatives who have done all the above except travel a little, they traveled a lot. That's living they spent their life going around the world and that's what made their life so grand. Now don't flame, I understand what your saying. (correct me if I'm wrong) but your saying that people can have a life doing what Tori said, but it seems hard to when all you have is a 9 to 5, 5 days a week with kids and stuff inbetween. I think people find their own life in those things as a sideline. My uncle for instance has a car (a '56 Chevy Bel Air convertable if anyone was woundering) and that's how he makes life liveable between all the above. On the other hand Tori's life can seem dead. Suffice it to say she does give spectacular concerts to tons of fans, but other than that she spends hours upon hours on a bus going from gig to gig. That's living? I think that no matter what situtation people are in, in there lives they find time to live one way or the other. bruce ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 16:56:10 +0000 From: jnj@mail.better.net Subject: Re: THE TIME I MET JEWEL > From: "Paul Jarvis" > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: THE TIME I MET JEWEL > Date: Wed, 04 Jun 1997 13:41:21 PDT > I guess I should introduce myself... > > I am Paul Jarvis from Mississauga, Ontario. Here is the info. 8pm doors 9pm Mudhens 10pm Rugburns 18+ show. If your not drinking they don't check IDs. $5 admission. I talked to the box office today and thhe said the show was way undersold. I would guess that less than 100 tickets have been sold. If there is anyway you can get to this show you need to be here. I know there are alot of people going to the NoHo show and it would be great if some of you could also make it to this show. As Dennis mentioned before this is the scene of the concert that you can hear on the legendary tape Jewel Rocks The Paradise. That was a great show and this one should be just as amazing. Even if you have never heard of the Rugburns come to this show. They are a band that has to be experienced not just listened to. So come and see the best band in the land. Hope to see you there. This is a state where one is fully aware of one's self and others. All actions, all occurences have immediate, obvious meaning to an enlightened one. There are a large number of people that will go through their lives in a stimulus/response sort of pattern. Actions are actually just reactions. These are people who would like any song if the radio played it enough. They'd like any author if enough movies were made of their books. They'd fall in love with anyone who showed them enough attention. Stimulus... Response. I think what Tori meant was that there are a great many people who get married and have kids who have never really considered who they are. They are zombies of the suburbs. To them, poetry is frivolous and music is just background noise. Look around a high school math class and you will find plenty of nice people with no insight to offer. If I may offer some hope for the human race... We can all be inspired. We just need to push ourselves to feel. Everyone is capable of considering their own existence. Sadly, most of the people that read this have already come to realize themselves as individuals. For those who haven't (if you've read this far) please, for your own sake, ask yourself who you are. Don't stop asking before you have an answer. PS. You will probably die before getting your answer; most of us will. The important thing is to never stop asking.
