(Err, something someone once said to me, that is...) "Ask the question, and the Universe will answer!" The Rugburns announced their east coast MA/NY tour swing for June 6th and 7th -- the same two days I'm hanging out in New Hampshire with Lakota medicine man Wallace Black Elk, looking for a little religion. So the dilemna was, do I hang with John, Stinky and Steve (and whatever EDAs show up)... or learn the secrets of the universe? (Tough decision) Well, in a rare mature fashion,I was about to pass on the 'Burns when they announced their Paradise show in Boston this Thursday -- WOO-HOO! So like Mr. Christopher Snyder says, everyone show up! For those of you who don't know, the Paradise Rock club is the site of the ORIGINAL EDA Gathering last May (yes, a full eight weeks BEFORE JewelStock at Bearsville, my babies) and the venue that produced the phenomenal "Jewel Rocks the Paradise" tape tree! So, let's plan a get-together and we might run into those wacky "crepe wagon" girls again this year! (Chris, Paul Kim, Bill and Steve -- ya'll getting this?) The venue is PERFECT for the Rugburns -- it's small, and there really isn't a bad "seat" (all general admission). If you are within a two hour drive of the Boston University area, do NOT miss this! I give it a potential four stars! If you are considering going, send me an e-mail. Last time I ran into the Steve and Stinky they entertained us for hours on end in the Morales' backyard (can you say Hot Dog Fest?) Trust me, these guys are insane, in every good sense of the word. It's just too preposterous for words! - - ----------- As the first single, "Shame On You" starts into the Top 40, the music world was set on its ear by today's announcement of Amy Ray's engagement to rapper Coolio, whose tune "Gangsta's Paradise" was perhaps the most well-known song on the soundtrack "Dangerous Minds." "I'm very happy for Amy," said her co-Indigo Girl Emily Saliers, who has been involved in a lesbian relationship for the last 2 1/2 years. "I hope she and Coolio will be very happy. He's a really nice guy." Ray herself was adamantly lesbian for at least two decades before the announcement of her engagement, and only recently ended a 7-year relationship with guitarist Cooper Seay, formerly of the Atlanta underground group Ellen James Society. ________ Coolio??? It's gotta be a joke. It has to be. God between the Jeff Buckley stuff today and now this, it's been an interesting couple of days. The fact that Amy could go straight isn't the problem. I know what I want to do but would like some private mail with your opinions first. The real reason that I haven't posted the winners of the Raffle is because 15 people that have pledged to send in a check have not done so. Two of them are among the winners. Everyone that pledged their support had tickets entered in the raffle. My feeling is that everyone will eventually send in their checks. If they don't, they probably have either forgotten or something came up and they now can't. If I announce the winners and a person hasn't sent in a check and finds they are not a winner, will they still keep their promise? Very few people participated just to win something. I trust all of you. But I don't think it would be fair to all the people that did send in a check and aren't one of the winners. Remember that everyone wins in more ways then one. Everyone gets a tape made for them by Tom Morales. Some will be the winners of some great prizes. But most of all we are all winners because we were able to come together a community of angels and help someone in need. If you haven't sent a check, this is a reminder. Please send it. If you can't send in a check, just tell me. You don't have to tell me why. It's ok. Things happen. If you can give me advice on how you think I should proceed, let me know. Just hit reply now or put Angel Advice in the subject line. Your suggestions will be confidential unless you CC: it to the list as well. Igor P.S. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!" He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all the time. How do you do it?" Jerry replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, 'Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose to positive side of life." "Yeah, right, it's not that easy", I protested. "Yes it is," Jerry said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. you choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or a bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life." I reflected on what Jerry said. Soon thereafter I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it. Several years later, I heard that Jerry did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant usiness: He left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpont by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Luckily, Jerry was found rather quickly and rushed to the local trauma center. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Jerry was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body. I saw Jerry about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Jerry replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live" "Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Jerry continued, "The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, 'He's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action." "What did you do?" I asked. "Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Jerry. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes', I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Bullets! Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead." Jerry lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have a choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything. U have 2 choices now: 1. Delete this message or ignore it. 2. Forward it to your dear ones and choose." - -- Westley Dent westleyd@juno.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Jun 1997 14:42:28 EDT From: tiltedhalo@juno.com (Tom Harris) Subject: EDA Birthday Announcements -- Oops! :->*cry* i'm hurt :( :->you forgot my birthday - June 16th :( :-> -linda Apologies are, of course, in order. Hello EDAers, After reading the e-mail(which I have attached) I did not feel particularly angelic. Actually, I felt nothing but HATE and RAGE, and would have liked nothing more than to kill those bastards who committed such a horrfic act. I'm having a lot of problems dealing with this (I myself have experienced being chased by a group of racists screaming various ethnic slurs). I guess the reason I'm posting this is so people may be more aware of the atrocities that continue to take place everyday and I ask for your support in this matter by boycotting Denny's. Thank you. As for what happened, I'll let the e-mail speak for itself: >>>>>> What's up everyone? No, this is not a forward, it's one of my really >>>>>> important letters so be sure you read every word of this. Well, a >>>>>> reallybad incident happened two weeks ago in my college....Syracuse >>>>>> University. >>>>>> >>>>>> My friends decided to go out on a Thursday night to a bar. Wasn't it something like Sorry my heart breaking ruined your day? But I did get the part with Steve!! He is so cool!! in fact he's a friendly lot! :-) All I could keep thinking was wow jewel is lucky to have a friend like him. He's really neat. Now I have half a mind to go out and buy one of the Rugburns cds..any ideas for which one? or perhaps a good website? Umm..i think that was it. I want to meet Jewel! I think I think she's even cooler because of how she was with her parents. That makes her seem more like a real person than a lot of those music people. Ok. I feel that same type of challenge should apply to people writing about Jewel: if you can do an article on Jewel without mentioning Alaska, that damn homestead, dumpster diving, and hands manifesting thought, then you get the gold star for the day. I'm so tired of the same old fluff on Jewel being rehased that I find myslef wondering why the only thing my hands manifest are five dollar bills to read esentially the same interview again and again. The Acoustic Guitar magazine article is the same old stuff you already know with the exception of a note to Jewel's parents from her sixth grade teacher: "We appreciate her artistic endeavors, but can you please ask Jewel not to yodel in math class?" There's an excellent interview with Danny Ferrington about what went into making Big Blue if you're interested in guitars (Ferington was the one who built it, in case you didn't know). Nice cover and pictures of Jewel. The Guitar World Acoustic interview is done from a musician's perspective, which is a nice change of pace. Jewel talks about her schooling and her creative process. But of course, the interviewer couldn't resist the urge to bring up a certain state and a certain homestead. By the way...why does everyone keep calling it a "homestead"...you never hear "ranch" or "farm" or "cabin". I don't know why that bothers me, it just does...like locks on a 24-hour-a-day convienience store. - --Garrett ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Jun 1997 18:10:02 -0400 (EDT) From: DRotter154@aol.com Subject: JEWEL ON VH1 TONIGHT Angels-- For all of you who have missed Hard Rock Cafe time time again it tonight at 8:00! so set your VCRS!!
