Luckily I caught myself earlier today from accidentally e-mailing to this list a lengthy report on a Canadian stock scam. I almost automatically enter jewel@smoe.org now when I address any e-mail. Since the company found no gold (but said it had the world's biggest gold find!) and nothing precious it definitely would be counted as No Jewel Nontent. I think we mostly know why this list is so special -- it's because everyone talks about everything in life. Seinfeld may be about nothing, but this list is about everything. Which, in a way, demonstrates that it's not really about idolizing any individual, it's about a collective spirit - -- many people joined by a common interest, Jewel, who share what matters to them with one another. Jewel shares many of the same values as those on this list and vice versa. One could say that it's all Jewel content when it's about learning, helping, growing and caring. With the exception of those rare posts from people being mean (and who may be subscribing and then unsubscribing after their quick and pointless attacks -- those fakes/flamers gotta go), there's little policing that this community requires or needs. Jeff, you have the gratitude and support of this list so don't let the occasional sniping get you down. A rare thing these days here. I think the list is fine. There aren't *too* many posts that are completely off Jewel. I sometimes like reading the sigs, and sometimes don't mind reading posts that have nothing to do with Jewel. I personally think the list is in good condition and doesn't really need any moderator right now. I was just listening to Selena this morning, and it got me thinking. How could a member of a fan club KILL the person that they "worship"?! Especially the LEADER of the club! He also STOLE money from her ... what kind of person is that?! I start thinking of our Angel ... it's just not possible that any of us would KILL her, or even think of doing anything harmful to her. We're all so devoted to her, which must have been the way that most people in the Selena fan club were, too. I don't understand why a person would want to kill their "idol" ... it's just so stupid! Selena's music was so beautiful and heart-warming ... she was an extraordinary person, who always brought love and happiness into the world. SO WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO MURDER HER?!?! I'm just real sad ... I love Selena, and always get angry to think that a person in HER OWN fan club killed her. :( Anyways, those are my thoughts of the day. :) Lotsa love, Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 May 1997 01:05:08 PDT From: "Andrea .........." Then I knew I wanted to keep updated with the latest about new material, concerts, and TV appearances. But soon I got hooked on personalities on the list. What a joy it was to come home to a filled inbox. Soon I was making friendships that felt stronger than I had with people I knew for years. Once I finally got to meet other EDAs face to face, it was all over. I knew I was part of something much bigger than just an electronic fan club. Many of us shared in making a difference to people with troubled lives. A few people that didn't think life was worth living were convinced otherwise by fellow EDAs. My greatest pleasure since I joined this mailing list came when I saw James Paul Kalanick smile at Java Joe's the night we hung out with him. As if that wasn't enough payback for me, he said as he left that he had a lot of fun and added, "Let's do it again sometime." Tonight I have two EDAs sleeping in my house as I type this letter. Larry has driven the 125 miles from LA several times before and has slept here. I never knew him until he asked me to join him at a concert about 6 months ago. The other person is Karen. She drove down from Santa Monica to join us at Java Joe's to see Elizabeth Hummel. Tonight was the first time I have ever met her. How many of you would just invite strangers into your home. I never would have before joining this list. Sure I belong to other lists. I read the others. But this one I enjoy. Why do I want to be part of a list that spoon feeds me only what someone thinks I should read. I don't want to be policed, controlled, censored, and have my content edited. I know how to use the delete button and I learned how to reply to letters both publicly and privately. The members of the list have learned all the unwritten rules without being bullied around. We learned how to police the list ourselves. Getting the list back on track when it does occasionally get out of hand is not hard to do. It is better than having someone tell us what we can or can't say. Sounds like something everybody wants to do, go and join a mailing list so they can be led around by a nose ring. If you do, just ask Fred. He bounds like he belongs to several. At least on this list you could ask Fred a question like that without it being off-topic. If your time is limited and you don't have any interest in the EDA community, it doesn't make you a bad person. Just join the jewel-news list. But don't play with my freedom and my new found family of friends. You may have missed the letter from Jewel that was recently posted by MrBB. If you read it again you will notice she is very happy about the Foundation. The Foundation would have never even been discussed on other lists. Igor P.S. I often go through the list and just skim, deleting NJC from people I don't know. Occasionally I'll read something that looks like the subject is important, but the letter is NJC, and I get upset. BUT I also understand that we've all got our little friendships with eachother on the list. While I wouldn't mind learning something boring about , say, Mia's personal life, a lot of the people who don't know her wouldn't care. The same goes with the things that are posted that _I_ think are inappropriate. It's all personal choice. I can kind of remember the list before JewelStock; it was all Jewel or list related. Nobody really knew each other too well. Suddenly, after JewelStock, we realized we all were friends. It was amazing. I really think THAT'S when all the NJC started. And I love it. So I'll say what Andrea said : Everyone please use NJC if your letter is NOT Jewel related. If you don't use NJC, it's considered that it IS Jewel related. LC stands for list content. I'll also say what Igor said : If you're on the list only for Jewel info and you're getting sick of all the discussion, switch over to the Jewel News list. This list can take care of itself. We do our own support of eachother, and our own "disciplining". I think we're great, and every time we get off track, something happens that brings us back together. We don't need anyone who considers themselves an expert telling us what to do. I mean, you can't force people to buying tickets through a FAULTY medium. Well, not unless you're Ticketmaster. What I meant to do was respond to the message about how this list isn't just for Jewel content. That's the role of the news only list. This is a gathering of people whose common thread is a love for one young woman's music. Coincidentally, we share other interests, hence the healthy amount of NJC messages. Now for those of us who really have a problem with NJC messages, why don't the rest of us just take a little more care in including those three little letters? Can't we all just get along? Endless thanks to DuckOfPrey (Mike Connell) for our new webpage on RockFest. You can find this at http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/rockfest97/edarockfest97.htm This will keep all who interested up to date on what we are doing to help everyone attend. I thought all you travelers would like to know that I am in the process of getting us a Class C MoblieHome, which will serve as the EDA HQ. This will be big enough to accomadate 20 EDA's who don't mind sharing. I will have it there for us on Friday through Monday for anyone who would like to take advantage of it. It will serve to house our food for the event and a place to sleep for the tailgaters and for anyone who doesn't want to leave until Monday. I have 3 different sizes to choose from and would like to get the largest but it all depends on YOU. We are renting this and will only be able to do so if everyone who would like to take part ships in. Right now we are looking at it being $35 per EDA at the most. This will include food for Friday and Saturday, space rent for the campground, and the cost of the RV. I think this is a pretty good deal. It will save you from having to buy food or beverages on Fri or Sat at the show which could amount to that alone. Not only that, but everyone will have a place to stay. There will be a few EDA homes that we may be able to meet at on Friday morning and Sunday, but the majority of the time we can stay together at the HQ. This RV will have facilities for showers, a private beedroom, a TV for games or VCR dubbing, a kitchen, and electricity, what more can you ask for. If enough EDA's ptich in then the price per person will go down, but to be conservative I am saying around $35 right now. Anyone who would like to stay in the RV on Sunday night before their trip home is welcome to as well. I need to know though who is interested and if they can afford that. I think it is a must for anyone who was planning on staying in a hotel because the hotels will probly all be booked and who wants to travel back and forth in the traffic when you can stay with all us EDA's =) I also want to warn people that it IS going to be blistering hot so please bring protection like sunblock and hats. Umbrellas will not be allowed at the show because they may block the view of spectators so please be warned. If you would like to arrange stay in the EDA HQ just give me a E Hollar. I guess there is a line of fierce love that says, 'if I cant have them, no one can...". There are mental people in the world. These mental people kill people, regardless of whether they are 'nice' or not. There are bad apples in every crowd and when that crowd is 5 billion people, that amounts to a lot of bad apples... Still, I think that sort of behavior is one of completely insanity, beyond simple curing. - -Pol - --------------------------------------------------------- Get Your *Web-Based* Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - --------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 May 1997 18:32:51 -0400 (EDT) From: gegertha@tiac.net (Chris Snyder) Subject: NJC: Jennifer Kimball(former member of the Story) NYC dates Hi Angels I got this off the Jennifer Kimball mailing list.
