I was trying to figure out if I should take a mini-vacation near my birthday on July 7th. Coincidentally, I had been listening to some Jewel (the adolescents I work with are absolutely nuts about Jewel), and thought about Jewelstock a year ago on July 18th and 19th... And you know what? I noticed that those dates fall on a Friday and Saturday this year! =) I remember how absolutely beautiful Woodstock and the surrounding area was at that time of year. I also remember the many things I wanted to do, such as seeing the Buddhist temple, exploring Woodstock more, and just hang out more. I didn't get to do all these things last year because I was busy and pressed for time last year. =) So, I'm thinking.... What a wonderful place to take a few days off and relax this summer! I think it would absolutely kick *ss if I met some of you that I met there last year, and we sat around and had a few beers, reminisced, and just relaxed. Think about it..... =) =) Sounds pretty great, doesn't it? =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 May 1997 01:32:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Little Earthquake Subject: NJC:Duncan Sheik Hard Rock Live Everyone deserves a long and pointless post at least once in theor life...so here's mine.... >22 John Hiatt, Duncan Sheik & Jill Sobule Hello! I should have mentoned this earlier but I forgot about it. I saw Duncan Sheik at the Cotton Club in Atlanta where he opened for Jewel last year. (My SO had lunch (unknowingly) with Duncan and the keyboard player that he had at the time.) So, of course I got his autograph and stuff, but i think I talked to (or listened to ) the bass player for a little longer. He mentioned that they had taped a Hard Rock Live so they taped it before April 6. (That's when the concert was.) BTW for those who don't know Jill Sobule is opening for Duncan Sheik on this leg of the tour. (Since she's on that show and all) Well, that's all. Oh, yeah, I'm getting a guitar tomorrow. :) I only know bits of three songs (YWMFM, WWSYS, and The World I Know (Collective Soul) but I'll learn.:) Jenn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 May 1997 01:59:19 EDT From: jewlieb@juno.com Subject: Jewel in Salem (Only 38 days left :) Date: Wed, 28 May 1997 00:25:14 -0700 From: "Larry G." That's right folks, all of you out of towners can get tix just as easily as us locals! Just point your web browser at: http://www.ticketmaster.ca/tmfiles/ac_help.htm and in the search window, type "lilith". Tix range from $22.50 - $42.50 Canadian (around $15-$30 US) Cheapest seats are General admission lawn seats, the rest should be reserved admission (with the possible exception of the pit area at the very front). It's at the Molson Wankitheatre (amphitheatre) which is a truly hideous venue as far as I'm concerned, but then I hate most huge venues. Good luck, and hope to be seeing many of you in August. There's been many great EDA parties around the country. Some of these had incredible entertainment provided by other San Diego area musicians such as The Rugburns, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel & Gregory Page. (All friends of Jewel, by the way) In the case of the Hot Dog Festival (HDF), thrown by the Morales Family in Dana Point, Ca, Steve & Jeff (aka Stinky) from The Rugburns dropped by & played a short but wonderfully unique set. There's many brand new songs (some still have unidentified titles) & those who were there can testify it was quite unlike any Rugburns show of late. Shortly after that, an impromtu EDA Cafe (EDAC) was thrown together at The Snyder family's home in Boston,Ma. Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel cancelled a gig in Albany & joined us for an incredible night of music & EDA hilarity. I'm sure Cindy Lee & Elizabeth will agree it was a highlight of their tour. It was certainly the longest gig of the tour! (I'd also like to say that any hardcore "Pet Sounds/Smile era Brian Wilson" fans will be absolutely blown away by Cindy Lee's new "keyboard" material! I personally love "Antarctica", "Missing Link","Aquamarine" & "She Rides The Wild White Horse" more than any other songs I've heard by anyone this year!) I plan on distributing (free of charge, of course) the 1st two volumes of a new ongoing tape tree series that will contain all the performances from both of these events. These particular EDA events are becoming legendary & thus the name "Future Folklore"..... These recordings will be different than the elaborate authorized Jewel recordings that we've treed in the past. Both of these events were recorded without the use of a mixing desk & are more reflective of the actual events. The music is still crystal clear but you also hear the EDA interaction (as well as the birds & ocean at HDF!). Tegan Godwin made the "ambiant" HDF recording & its really quite nice & captures some of the spirit of this historically significant EDA gathering. At EDAC, Phil & I collaborated on last minute equipment, but it worked out well. We ran a seperate mic on vocals, one on instruments & one on the room so everything was captured clearly. (If any techies are curious about the recording techniques utilized, write to me privately.) Its also important to note that the musicians have all been incredibly generous enough to authorize the release of these recordings for this project. I have two goals for this project: I certainly hope to turn more EDAs on to these other San Diego artists. They can all benefit from our continued support. But more than that, I want to share a little of that "x factor" that happens when EDAs get together. There's something very special going on that I want to see continued. Lovable Lawyer Larry said it best: "We all began as fans of Jewel & then became fans of each other". It's looking like Mike is gonna take the big plunge & administrate this free tape tree once again so that's now together. Dennis Harris is busy with j-card design & I'm sure they'll be mind blowing, as usual. He was at both events & has many photos from both to incorporate into the j-card graphics. These volumes of "Future Folklore" will consist of two 100 minute cassettes. Instructions will be posted in approximately a month & sign-up will begin. This tree will be different & we're working out exact procedure still. It's very important to me to include the Rugburns list & the CLB list, as well as the EDAs this time. Logistics are being worked on. (Please wait for these instructional posts BEFORE requesting copies or volunteering participation in this tree.) Following this message is the tentative track listings. This music is really something special. If this is successful, I'm willing to donate my resources to continue this series on an ongoing basis. I'm hoping "Future Folklore" Volumes 1 & 2 will be enthusiastically recieved. If nothing else, I sincerely hope this series will help encourage more events like this in the future. Here are my thoughts: these could change upon your suggestions.. OKAY, FRIDAY.....(the end of july, or early August)***picnic at Shawnee Mission PArk....Everybody attending the bbq pay $5 towards a BBQ. We could buy hot dogs, brats, veggie kabobs(Erin), hamburgers, etc. chips, potato salad, well you get the idea. The people form the KC metro area would be responsible for buying the food, etc. when the money gets in! This would kind of be the GET TO KNOW YOU dinner. We could all get together a game of softball or frisbee, you know that fun park stuff....When the sun went down, we could all travel to the plaza..(this is a well known historic shopping area)Everybody could go back to the hotel or their homes that night. SATURDAY-We would all meet at World's of Fun and Ocean's of Fun at 10 am, when the parks open. World's of Fun is the ammusemant park, it is home to the world's second largest wooden rollercoaster....Ocean's of Fun has a wave pool, huge slides, etc...1 day passes to both parks average about $40 dollars a piece, but if you think about it you would be ther 14 hours..or $1.42 per hour each park.Anyway, we could all BBQ for lunch there or whatever. World's of Fun has Saturday night fireworks so that would be a plus. There is definatly 14 hours worth of fun at both the parks. The parks close at midnight! SO after that day of fun was over everybody would go home(hotels, etc.) SUNDAY-Everybody could meet for breakfast at Shoney's or somewhere with a breakfast bar..we could all say our goodbyes and we would just depart from there. That would put you out of KC around 12:00 if you were traveling back somewhere.. *******SO, I am asking if you have even the littlest interest in being part of this that you email me, if you do not want to go to all three days that is ok, just let me know of any interest, so I know whether or not to persue this!*************** THANks, MANDY:) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 May 1997 14:26:03 -0400 From: Burkeman Subject: NJC: Adventures in NJ and with the Rugburns I know this is late but I've been busy. All that can be said about the EDAdventure has been said, it was a wonderful time for all. Thanks to Rob and Tammy, hi to everyone I met, and to the people I had met previously at gatherings, well you know. :) HOWEVER no one knows the secrets surrounding the 'special guests' (myself, Mia, and Dan) and their midnight eight-hour drive to New Jersey. Until now. For example: No one knows that Mia and I had to convince Dan repeatedly that our destination was not Danville, PA. AND No one knows that the reason we took an hour-long detour is because we saw the sign saying "To Harrisburg" and took that exit. OR No one knows about Dan's early morning rendez-vous with the Amish maid. (okay maybe that didn't happen but maybe it did.) In any case it was a fine fine weekend and great fun. - ------ Second of all, this past weekend with the Rugburns... All I knew upon leaving for Cleveland Friday night was that Liz and Shelly would be there with some special guests who were flying in. My curiosity was piqued all the more when I arrived to find out the Moraleses were in town! It was indeed an honor to meet the people for whom I ate hot dogs 39 days in a row. Mia had also made the trip into town for her home concert. However... I was in a bar, and had some work to do. I was getting bored with Iran, so I decided to work the room. Now, there is still debate over the ages of the twins. They told me they were seniors at Kent State... but this is another story. In any case, I had some friends for the evening. Two very.. interesting opening acts played to a somewhat enthusiastic crowd. "Loud" and "Good" are both four letter words, but that's where the similarity ends. The second band was getting them confused. Then the Rugburns came on for a mind-boggling almost-3-hour show. The crowd, now overly enthusiastic, found the need to slam-dance to even the slowest Rugburns songs. In fact, I think some guys were even moshing to "My Body Is Changing" but I could be wrong. All the favorites were played as Nancy was constantly harrassed by the lone security guard for sitting on the stage. You tell 'im Nancy! Of course I'd like to have Tom on my side any time :) Kaili too, for I can always use the cute factor :) My twins left me at the end of the night for someone else. Not to be discouraged... this single life sure is fun. Another late-nite 3 hour drive home and I walked in the front door at 4:30 a.m. A little sleep and then... I always wonder that bands don't, because Providence could be so much cooler than Boston. It just hasn't realized its potential yet. Oh well Later, Josh ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 May 1997 14:41:47 -0400 From: Burkeman Subject: NJC: Adventures continued Where was I? Ah, yes, Frankie's. I tape a little bit of their soundcheck, when FINALLY my crew arrives and gets in by some shifty dealings by Nancy. Boy is she smooth. I am accosted and forced to pay the cover charge, even though I'm already in the bar. ? oh well. Walking in are... Greg, Toni, Rusty, and Sharron all the way from Indianapolis. Plus Tom, Nancy, Kaili, Liz, Shelly, Mia, and eventually Dan and his friend Kris, who were definitely the butt of many many cultural jokes throughout the evening. So we again see a fine Toledo band open, they weren't bad. They weren't good either. But they gave me a free CD so I won't complain. I am cornered by a couple fellows who want to trade me for the video, I trade addresses with them and immediately lose their addresses. (one of them sent me something today though so I'm doin okay). Anyway. I pull out the printout of Larry's post about the Billboard songwriters chart and show it to Steve. He is VERY impressed. I think he never imagined his name would be on the Billboard charts. I saw the emotions flow within him as he tried to laugh it off. But I know he was touched. Still hurting from being dumped by the twins, I am led through the bar by Nancy, looking for another nice girl. Nancy, I love you! Even if you told her I was shy. In any case, I met her. The girl of my dreams. But this is also another story entirely. Baby, can't you see I got tears in my eyes? The Rugburns took the stage (if you can call it that) eventually, and opened with Greg Dunn's request for Silver Lining. The Rugburns play a great two-hour set, ending on one of the more interesting renditions of Dick's Automotive. Included in the set are songs featuring Liz and an improv about the bartender. A must. Also featured were: Stinky's destructive streak protruding to smashing a bottle all over Nancy. And many other highlights I can't remember right now. So the show ends, and we hang out in the bar as late as possible until we're kicked out. I get the vital information from my new friend I just met, promise to keep in touch and say goodbye. We all retire to the local hotel where Dan the Man breaks out the Candian brew. We sit around for awhile, having fun, etc etc. We get hungry (mind you it is 4 am at this time) and so Dan, Kris, and I are dispatched to go to go get food. So we stumbled to my car and drove real slow to Denny's. Let me tell you this waitress I'm not going anywhere near. We somehow make it back. We sleep. I think. Our sleep may just be a rumor. Steve and Stinky were around. Somewhere. We parted with Dan and Kris, and headed to Liz and Shelly's but apparently my side trip meant missing out on saying goodbye to Mia. :( ah well. I am treated to some soothing acoustic guitar playing from Sharron, but soon it is time for me to go. That's it! It was a great fun weekend spent with EDAs from all over. It is the largest telescope in the US, capable of viewing a range of over 1 billion light years. We all know that a certain star now has become suddenly brighter. I was on a mission. Someone at this very important place had to be told that one of the stars now had a San Diego connection. My first contact was a ground keeper. As I told him the story, he just kept on nodding his head until he finally said something in Spanish. Next person I tried to engage in conversation was the person running the gift store. I had to tell her, "No I'm not with those Heaven's Gate people, I'm an EveryDay Angel." So I went into the museum and fold a couple from Nebraska. I told them the whole history of Jewel and the EDA. They invited me out to Nebraska to do star viewing. "You'all got to come to Nebraska to see stars. We got no smog, no city lights, no hills to block your view. Just one big night time canopy of stars. The most in the whole country." So now I told them about Vincent van Gogh and Starry Night. I told them to head towards Santa Maria with their RV. They could go home and add memories of angels to their view of the stars. This nice couple from Nebraska, William and Karen "Harris"son would be the volunteers to pick the winners of the Raffle. I pulled out a huge bag of raffle tickets and explained that each ticket represented a dollar of very heartfelt contributions for a James Paul Kalanick who has become a symbol of hope for us all. All the numbers have been picked and are in a sealed envelope which will be opened tonight before EDA witnesses. I tried to find a place to pick the winners that would somehow relate to Jewel. First it was to be Java Joe's. Then I wanted to do it at James' house. This place is perfect. It is only a stones throw from Jewel's favorite spots in the desert. As the concert gets closer, the "tailgate EDA's list" will be narrowed down to those that are *for sure* going to attend. *Any EDA's that will need a place to stay OR can offer a place for other EDA's to stay, please e-mail Farr. He is compiling a list with this info. *Anyone that needs a ride or can give a ride to others, please e-mail Christina about that. She is keeping a list of carpool info. Also, if anyone sees another person here from their area on this list, you might try just sending them a letter to arrange a ride if possible. If so, please let Christina know so she can update her list. - ------------------------------------------------ * New artists added to the Rockfest Line-up!!! * * Paula Cole, The Nixons, and Matchbox 20! * - ------------------------------------------------ - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- *** ROCKFEST '97 EDA LIST *** ============================= *Angela DiIulio - Fort Worth, TX - earthsis@spindle.net *Christina Ferrara - York, PA - cferrara@eagle.ycp.edu *Derrick Karacostas - Hitchcock, TX - dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu *Farr Shepherd - Tecumseh, OK - obie1@ou.edu *Demian Blair - Pittsburgh, PA - dblair@aecnet.com *Michael Cherman - Newport Beach, CA - mcherman@uci.edu *John Cummings - Columbus, OH - cummings.65@postbox.acs.ohio-state.edu *Bill and Carrie Dallner - Chicago, IL - dallfin@flash.net *Douglas Stephen Garay - Dallas, TX - dsg0001@jove.acs.unt.edu *Jon Hargett - Auburn, AL - e-mail address *Jennifer Hicks - Atlanta, GA - gs14jrh@panther.gsu.edu *James Judd - Auburn, AL - James.Judd@Eng.Auburn.EDU *Steve Mier - Omaha, NE - e-mail address *Eric Montas - Union NJ - RoninAM@worldnet.att.net (riding with Terrence) *Luke Nye - Omaha, NE - jnye@probe.net (may ride with Steve) *Chris Pavek - Amarillo, TX - kulisu@arn.net *Mike Spring - Orlando, FL - exit28@juno.com *Dan Stark - Windsor, Ontario - danstark@MNSi.Net *Amelia Vlah (Mia) - Cleveland, OH- asv@po.CWRU.edu (riding with Dan Stark) *Andy Wang - Seattle, WA - Andy.Wang@MSNBC.COM (news media guy) *Terrence R.
