Health has been on my mind lately re Jewel, so mortality is worth considering (as recent tributes to Allen Ginsberg evidence). Peace and good health, Adrian Wednesday, May 28, 1997 Bob Dylan hospitalized with chest pains, infection   NEW YORK (AP) -- Bob Dylan was hospitalized with a potentially fatal lung infection that forced him to cancel a European tour, his record label said Wednesday.   Dylan, who turned 56 on Saturday, was admitted to a hospital over the weekend with severe chest pains, Columbia Records said in a statement.   The statement indicated the ailment was histoplasmosis, a fungal infection of the lung that causes swelling of the pericardium, the sac surrounding the heart.   Dr. Jeffrey Gold, head of the cardiothoracic surgery department at Montefiore-Einstein Medical Center in the Bronx, said histoplasmosis carries "pneumonia-like symptoms" and people can be infected for "20 or 30 years before it causes trouble."   "Sometimes it just heals itself," other times antibiotics are required, and in advanced stages, draining the pericardium or surgery is necessary, Gold said.   The statement from Colombia did not say where Dylan was hospitalized or disclose his condition, and spokesmen for Dylan and the record label would not elaborate.   Dylan was "undergoing treatment and will remain hospitalized in the care of his physicians until such time as they feel confident that his condition has improved," Columbia Records said.   The singer-songwriter, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame whose songs include "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Like a Rolling Stone," was forced to cancel a tour of the United Kingdom and Switzerland.   Although widely viewed as reclusive, Dylan has toured relentlessly in recent years, performing concerts all over the world.   He has also continued to record, but recent albums, including collections of traditional folk songs and an "MTV Unplugged" recording of his own work, have met with less success than his earlier albums.   Widely regarded as the best songwriter of his generation, his work has been performed by, and cited as an influence, on scores of others.   ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 1997 22:37:14 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: Re: Bob Dylan Hospitalized Hi everyone: I just got my Jewel Digest and see that Igor and Peter Jones have flagged the Bob Dylan concerns. I would like to update everyone on the plans for RockFest for those of you who are starting to make travel arrangments. Only three more weeks. So far we have things in the works for activities Friday Saturday and Sunday for those of you that can participate. FRIDAY is the official Blockbuster tailgate party. On sight camping will be allowed for those who want to camp on Firday night to avoid the traffic and see the additional bands. There is a camping fee for every vehicle which covers them for the weekend. This fee is $30, thats a big chunk of change to pay out for weekend parking. We are in the process of obtaining an RV for the weekend if everyone is willing to chip in. We feel that this will save in the long-run on camping fees for all the EDA's who are going to be present for both days. There will be a large food court at the Speedway but it is sure to be very expensive so we will also use the RV as the EDA HQ. We are hoping to BBQ and keep all the food that we will need for both days in the RV. This too will save money for all involved. The gates for camping will be open at 8:00am on Friday June 20 for early arrivers. If we are able to obtain the RV for the weekend then we will make arrangements for everyones cars at one of the local EDA homes so we can all ride in the RV and save on parking fees. The actual TailGate party starts at 5:30 on Friday June 20. This is when the live music will begin from bands other than those who are headlining on Saturday. I am told that there will be an autographing session for the bands whick will be in the Main Blockbuster tent on Friday so bring your Sharpies and favorite pics. There will be only one stage, not two as was thought, but it is an enormous stage which is about 170 yards in length. Some of the non headlinig bands that will be playing on Friday will be TOAD THE WET SPROCKET, PAULA COLE, THE NIXONS, MATCHBOX 20 and MORE..... The venue will NOT be serving alcohol at the show but is allowing spectators to bring in coolers up to 14x14x14 with food and BEER (no hard liquor or glass containers) with a charge of $10 per cooler. SATURDAY gates open at 6:00 am and there will be a $5.00 charge for parking for cars and $30 or RV parking. the gates will not open until 8:00 am on Saturday. Preshow is schedule to start at 10:00 am and the show will start at 2:00. This is where all the headliners will begin to perform. We have available a list of local hotels if anyone would like to stay the night on Saturday. We may have a local EDA house to stay at but at the moment we are unsure. PLEASE REMEBER that BlockBuster has given away and sold over 1 MILLION TICKETS to this show so the TRAFFIC will be horrible. So don't expect to get anywhere fast before or after the event. SUNDAY. An EDA gathering wouldn't be complete without the TRADITIONAL EDA BREAKFAST on Sunday morning. Most likely we will eat at a local IHOP but we will have to wait to see how many people will be in attendance. ALSO, for those who will be in town on Sunday, we are making arrangements for everyone to attend the FIRST EVER........AQUA ANGELS. Thats right, how can you not want to get wet in the HOT TEXAS SUN without getting soaked by your favorite Angel. Plans are in the mix for a Massive waterpark bonanza for Sunday after breakfast. More details are to come on this but don't forget to bring your swimsuit =) If there is anyone who has an RV and could bring it down for the weekend than please contact me. If you still want to come and don't have a ride or ticket DON'T FRET, if you E Mail Christina or myself we can most likely get you a ride from anywhere in the country from one of the EDA's already attending. And tickets, well they always seem to manifest themselves =) Our committee does have extras so don't use that as an excuse. For all of you who are flying in, if you want to contact one of us we can gladly make arrangments to get you to and from the airport. I still need everyone to RSVP me so we can have an idea of what kind of food we will need and sleeping accomadations. We hope to see you all there. More to come soon. I've been on the EDA list now for almost two months, and this is my first mass-post. Kinda ironic that this is the thread that I'm responding to, because originally I wasn't going to because I knew that I'd write out a huge list, with several explanations why I like the particular artist, but I guess the music I listen to kinda describes me better than I could myself. Well, I'm sure some of you might've thought this was a dead thread by now, but here's my influences and tastes. I feel I had to break 'em out though, into three categories. One : The Words Two : The Music Three : Just good old party music Words : Jewel (newest addition to the list, been hooked since I first heard her, I just haven't been able to get this disc outta my changer :) Paul Simon (next to Bob Dylan, the best intepreter of "Americana" there is, IMO) Bob Dylan (the man is a pure genius, period, IMO) Phil Ochs (the best of the political folkies of the sixties, IMO) John Lennon (the layman's thinking man) Rickie Lee Jones (this woman has more scenes and characters than anyone except maybe Dylan, and that voice...) Neil Young (a fantastic social commentator, and extremely diverse in approach) Nirvana (yup, no typo, Kurt Cobain is the epitome of the tortured genius. I'll never forget the first time I heard the unplugged performance. I remember telling a friend that he would die soon. The pain in his performance was unreal. Unfortunately, I was right) Indigo Girls (The words, the harmonies,...just great stuff) Pink Floyd (could easily fall in the "music" heading also. Pink Floyd is one of those bands I can't listen to just anytime. I have to be in the mood. But, when I'm in that mood, Pink Floyd is all I want to hear.) The Who/Pete Townshend (ditto)(Could this band have ever made it without each other? I don't think so. The friction WAS their creativity. And what creativity it was) Syd Barrett (Another tortured, albeit obscure, genius. Original founder of Pink Floyd, and an unfortunate LSD casualty) The Doors (Jim Morrison dared us to take chances. Test the boundaries. Open doors to new experiences. The defiant hero.) Liz Phair ("Exile In Guyville" flat kicked my ass! I was NOT prepared for it. Women had been tough before, but not quite like this.) Sarah McLachlan ("The Freedom Sessions" is one of the most warm and friendly albums I've heard in a long time. Wish I coulda been there.) Velvet Underground (Hey, not everything was incense and peppermints in the Summer of Love. Just listen to "The Velvet Underground and Nico") Music : Ten Years After (One of the most technically adept groups in rock. Any doubters just need to listen to the "Undead" album. Jazzy bluesy rock) Beatles (Some of the most timeless music ever recorded) Rory Gallagher (Fairly obscure (at least in the U.S.) Irish blues guitarist. One of my all-time fave performers.) Jimi Hendrix (What can I say that hasn't been said? Simply the greatest guitarist who ever lived, IMO) Leo Kottke (This man is amazing! I swear, sometimes it sounds like two guitarists at once, he's so lightning quick.) Metallica (Yup, metal with an attitude AND a brain) Led Zeppelin (Actually coulda fell into any of the groupings. Probably my all-time favorite band. Timeless music, that ages very well.) Frank Zappa (What Dylan is to the word, Zappa is to the music. Extremely diverse, not for everybody) Party : Bob Seger (My all-time fave party music. Great in concert too. Have yet to meet anyone who really dislikes Seger) Creedence Clearwater Revival (ditto. The missing link between country/rock/pop/blues?) J Geils Band (Helluva party band. Especially live. Anybody who's ever seen 'em in concert knows what I'm talking about) Bad Company (Paul Rodgers has perhaps (along with Robert Plant), the best male voice in rock and roll) Aerosmith (the EARLY stuff! "Rocks" era and earlier. Raw, gritty,...they were still hungry, and put forth a LOT more effort than they do now, IMO) Rolling Stones (A great catalog. A band that always kept up with the times, and usually put out quality work.) Iggy Pop and The Stooges (Some of the most raw, intense music you could ever hope to listen to. This is rock and roll with a real attitude. Unfortunately, Iggy just never was able to get in the same groove solo. There's a reason this man was the ONLY serious consideration to replace Morrison in the Doors. One listen to "Funhouse", and you'll know why.) (BTW...Stooges shouldn't be in Party, so much as in Music. Not exactly upbeat stuff. I'm just too lazy to go back and retype it in the appropriate space.) OK, folks...this was by no means complete. These are just the artists who came to mind right off the bat. Sorry to take up so much space. Next time I write something, I'll try to make it short and sweet. Let me just say one more time that being an adoptive parent is VERY EASY. Your responsibilities as an adoptive parent are : - -- being nice to a newbie and answering any questions he/she has - -- watching your newbie on the list- and then nicely correcting any list etiquette problems they have ( like posting 4 one-sentence posts in a day ) THAT'S IT ! you, as a parent, do NOT have to : - -- make any tapes for your newbie ( although it's nice ) - -- invite your newbie over for sleepovers - -- literally ADOPT your newbie as a new family member - -- induct your newbie into the secret order of the Harris Clan It's not even hard to become a parent. No scary environment or background checks. I only ask a few things of adoptive parents : - -- Familiarity with the story of how JewelStock came to be, whether or not they attended - -- What Jewel's middle name is ( this one's REALLY easy ) - -- The TRUE story behind the Harris Brothers ( which I didn't learn until months after I'd joined the list, and I'd met them both ) - -- List etiquette IF you are interested in becoming an adoptive parent, please go to http://www.thespis.com/newbies and fil out a survey. I'll send you a copy of the survey your newbie filled out, send your newbie the copy of YOUR survey, and voila ! A pretty little nuclear family you will be !! HOWEVER, I saw that news item a few weeks ago and it said that Jewel is in the studio "re-recording the song Foolish Games off POY for inclusion into the soundtrack." Or something like that. If you ask me, putting "Foolish Games" into the Batman & Robin soundtrack is like putting a Tori Amos or Dylan song into The Predator soundtrack or something. I just got off the phone with Ticketmaster. Tickets go on sale for the August 9th Lilith Fair at Tinley Park, IL at noon on Saturday, May 31st. The good news is that I was told that tickets will *not* be available sooner for Gold or Platinum Card holders, which can be problematic, since good seats can disappear before they are available to the general public. Fortunately, we don't have to worry about that in this case. The three different ticket prices are $36, 28.50 and $21. The $36 and $28.50 seats are obviously for closer or farther away in the actual seats, while the $21 tickets are for the seating on the hill behind the seats. When I saw Alanis there last year, we sat on the hill and, even though we were far away, we enjoyed it tremendously! It sounds like there are going to be a lot of EDA's there so try to make it. Here's an extra incentive to go. Shana (Crying Angel) will give an audio tape (which turned out fantastic) of Jewel's concert at the Quasimodo Club in Berlin on May 26th to every EDA who we see at the Lilith Fair. See ya, :-) Kris (Zero Gravity) and Shana (Crying Angel) PS We're preparing an in depth review of the entire trip to Germany to see Jewel. Well, that makes 2 of us. ^_^; Chris is the most experienced and knowledgable with the Boston area. I can volunteer to keep a running list of the EDAs who are relatively certain they can go, but organizing ticket purchases is going to be out of my league and I suspect a little tricky I think. If we plan to get the seats the day they go on sale, so all the EDAs can sit together, we are going to have to know everyone who's going in about 1 week's time. So comments- is it realistic to try to get everyone in the same area especially if some EDAs won't know until well after tickets go on sale? Are there EDAs out there who won't know until much later if they'll be going? I have a feeling the answers to the second question will dictate our best course of action. If most EDAs won't know until well after the tickets go on sale if they can come, then there's no way everyone can sit together and there probably won't be as big a rush. Chris- if we get the tickets as they go on sale, do you know what are the best seats we can get? Now, if JK was fooling around with Steve Poltz again, _that_ would be news. Liz would be awfully disapointed, but it'd still be news. - -- Reverend Angus I don't post much anymore... avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 May 1997 18:41:38 EDT From: jewelfan1@juno.com (Liz A Clark) Subject: NJC: The Rugburns last weekend Hi all, I was privileged to see The Rugburns last Friday in Cleveland, Saturday in Toledo (even though it was 18+...thanks Nancy!!), and Sunday in Columbus. Tom and Nancy Morales, Kaili, Greg Dunn, Mia, Tim Burke, Dan Stark, his friend Kris, Toni Dunn other members of her band Chuck Marten (Rusty & Sharron), all came last weekend for a magnificent party in my town!! =) The Friday night show was great, content wise, they played for about 3 hours. They were in tune totally. The highlight of the evening was "My Girlfriend", and "Sun Piss". Stink was crazy as usual, he even cracked one of his cymbals. Steve was as cute as usual, as was Johnny. We ended up getting home from Cleveland at about 4:00 am. When we finally woke up Saturday morning, we were greeted by more friends (Tom, Nancy, Kaili, Shelly and I were already at my house). More and more guests arrived, and soon Kaili and I began to weep because we couldn't attend the Toledo show because it was 18+. =( We decided to dress up and pretend we could go though! =) Toni Dunn said that she would take us to the concert, and if there was some way we could get in we would, if not, she was going to take us home. We realized the odds but decided to go for it anyway. When we got to Frankies, Johnny and Steve gave Kaili and I the strangest looks because they didn't know that we were going to attempt to get in. At the door, Nancy worked her charm, with the help of Stinky, and we were able to get into the 18+ show!!! I love you Nancy!! It even makes up for having Tom pour my contact down the drain!!!!! ;-) Please don't apologize again!!! =) Anyway, we hung out the venue for awhile, just dancing around and stuff. We were acting pretty crazy!! Stevie sang a song for me, and he even included this lyric in an improv, "I've got a 16 year old girlfriend Liz, who I am saving til graduation day, she kissed me in the boys' bathroom at a bar in Tijuana." Everyone started cheering and I started blushing BIG TIME!! =) We also got to hear the classic "Take the Skinheads Bowling". After the show, we got a hotel with the mysterious room 211...I think. The hotel has now been coined "The Days Inn of Death". Don't ask! ;-) So, I stayed up until 6:30 in the morning chatting with my buddies. Sunday, everyone was DEAD TIRED!!! We got to Columbus that evening practically falling asleep on the table. Kaili and I were forced to show our "Steve Polt'z Girlfriend" t-shirts. Nancy, Sharron, and Shelly were attacking us...we had no choice!!!!!! =) The set wasn't that long, but we were dancing up a storm. I was headbanging and nearly killed Shelly with my hair. After the show, we had a little dance party of our own. Kaili is a crazy one!! I love her...she is my adopted lil sis!! Then crazy boy Jeff grabbed Sharron and they were swing dancin like madmen! It was really cool!!!! Stevie wasn't feeling too well, he was coming down with a cold. I guess he has got it pretty bad. Guess what? I have a bad cold too! ;-) Shelly mysteriously contracted this cold too. I just don't where we got it from...hehehehe. Love you guys! Thanks to everyone who came and contributed to a f**king rockin good time!!! I miss you Kai!! So does Shelly!! ~Liz I know that it sounds cliche, but I'm tired of all this violence ~Steven J. Jewel Harborlights on sale: 6/7 10am tickets $26 performance: August 29th 7:30 or 8pm. As of right now they have no opening act but someone should be added. Talk to you soon. And keep sending those reservations for this show. If people want tickets as a group I need names and amounts ahead of time. Have a wonderful day. Chris Snyder PS Hopefully everything will be cleared up soon. Just by calling the ticket line and the actual store I got different info. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 May 1997 18:11:03 est From: iamkelly@juno.com (Kelly K Miller) Subject: Hi Angels Hi everyone! Hi people: It looks like there is enough interest to make this a success. there may not be a lot of people, but it will be fun! We have several descisions to make... *******Descision # 1: Would you all rather just have it at World's of Fun, Just have it at Oceans of Fun, or have it at both.(We will be there from 10am-12am, it is a long time!) So take that into consideration when you make the descision) ********Descision # 2: Would anybody be interested in possibly doing community service on Sunday or something? TJTALKEN asked about it and I think it is a great idea. Let me know when you resond to this if you would be interested in going to breakfast then maybe going out somewhere to do service. I owuld find an organization ahead of time for us to do some work for.... Please mail me as soon as you get this and let me know...... P>S> somebody had a great idea: How about we drink lots of sprite at the picnic. I hear that the sprite cans help you to receive $6.00 of admission! Mail Me Soon!
