And the small audience of about 250 is really enjoying it. Until she stops abruptly. "I hate to do a song-us interruptus," she says, "but if I finish this, they may use it, and I made a lot of mistakes." Colvin is stressed because this is no mere concert: She's taping an appearance on Hard Rock Live, VH1's ambitious new weekly concert series, which airs Sunday nights at 8 P.M./ET and repeats throughout the week. (A "best of" show drawing from the first eight hour-long shows will debut May 25, featuring Jewel, Lou Reed, Cheap Trick, and Chicago, among others.) The point of Colvin's performance isn't to make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the invited crowd -- though that may happen -- but to make the show look like one. Take the Lemonheads' appearance, which aired last month. Folks at home might describe lead singer Evan Dando as enthusiastic. "Thank you! Thank you! This is amazing!" he said at one point during the televised show. But at the February taping, he was obviously being sarcastic, mocking the kind of rock-star pose you'd find at a real concert. "Come out and see us at a club sometime," he said. "It'll be a lot more fun -- for me, anyway." (That comment didn't air.) The slings and arrows of making music for TV also flew for Paula Cole, who had the misfortune to play right after pop sensation Jewel. She hit the stage to find that the thick crowd had largely dispersed and those remaining seemed to have never heard of her. But by the time her performance aired (she and Reed were featured on the May 4 show), Cole had a hit song in "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" -- and thanks to selective camera angles, she seemed to be playing to an enthusiastic crowd. But that's to be expected: Hard Rock Live wants to introduce new artists such as Cole, soul singer Maxwell, and the band Rusted Root. It also showcases established acts: Upcoming shows include INXS, k.d. lang, and Hall and Oates. Executive producer Robert Small, who created the now-legendary MTV Unplugged series, points out that live-music fans have generally had to rely on the occasional Unplugged or awards show to see bands in concert settings. "Very few outlets are willing to take a chance on [live music]," he says. "The networks don't even consider it, because it doesn't get the ratings." The ghost of the ongoing Unplugged series lingers over Live, which is taped in the very studio where Tony Bennett dusted off his black tie and tails for a new generation of fans in 1994; it's the same stage where Nirvana's Kurt Cobain sat surrounded by candles and gave one of his last performances. And while Hard Rock Live lacks the hip gimmickry of its MTV counterpart, a few artists have already turned in performances that were remarkably spirited -- both live and on tape. Jewel's show was supposed to be edited to appear with Rusted Root's, but she so charmed VH1 executives that they devoted the entire March 30 series premiere to her performance. So viewers got to see the 22-year-old yodeling with her father, Atz Kilcher, and doing an impromptu rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" with her mother, Nedra Carroll. But the real highlight so far has been a transcendent evening with Reed, the rock icon and former front man for the Velvet Underground. The TV version offered just five songs, including collaborations with performance artist Laurie Anderson (she is also Reed's girlfriend) and saxophonist David Sanborn. The live audience, however, got a special treat: two hours of music, including such Reed classics as "I'll Be Your Mirror," "A Perfect Day," "Satellite of Love," and "White Light/White Heat," which didn't make the broadcast. Sometimes, unfortunately, there's no substitute for being there. __________ /\//\\///\\\////\\\\/////\\\\\//////\\\\\\/////\\\\\////\\\\///\\\//\\/\ \ New to the list and confused? That was because July 9th is Lilith Fair at Irvine and 8th at Mountain View. Many EDAs will be in the area. The gathering is meant to last all weekend. Remember we are sleeping under the stars on the beach. What do you think? School will be out. A lot of people will be on vacation. And most important, many people will be in the area to see Jewel. Maybe Jewel could even find time to drop by for a surfing lesson from Sinjin. That is if he can find time between vollyball and frisbee lessons. He also has to find time away from chasing all the women. We could do it Fourth of July weekend. Or we could pick a date when travel would be easier. That weekend would be busy on the highways. Unlike some of the gatherings, this one has tons of space. You can bring friends and family. Even if every person on the list came, we would have enough room. In my first post, I gave a few hints about the secret location. No one has guessed the spot. You don't have to live in California to guess. Use the web. More hints: It is off of Highway 101. Rocket scientist could be our only problem. Sand dunes are close by but not on our beach. If you are traveling north, you can stop for a real danish. If you travel south, stop at bubble-gum alley. Cabbage is a fall vegetable. Amtrack doesn't stop there but United does. Tri-tip. Help needed for a pre event site inspection. Sinjin and I are going to look over the site and take some pictures. If you live north of Pea Soup Anderson or south of Madonna's Inn, please contact me or Sinjin. Anyone living close by knows what I'm talking about. We could meet you and you could help give us your opinion. I hope you enjoy this mystery game. I'll disclose the secret spot after we inspect it or if someone guesses the location. At this time of the year, California camp sites are impossible to reserve. But no one knows about this beautiful place. I can't wait until people see it. I expect a lot of uhs and ahs. Last year I took a friend visiting from New Jersey to this beach. He is a world traveler. His opinion was that it is one of the most beautiful beaches he has ever seen. Also in my first post, I gave credit to Sinjin and myself for the idea. I forgot to also give Jerome credit. Igor P.S. I sit in the channel for hours sometimes without saying anything, and others are even worse than that... Now, something that will get you kicked out in a heart beat is trying to do something that violates the same spirit as the EDA list. For instance, continually talking about boot CD's or distribution of Angel Food to non-EDA members. You can find me on the undernet as Wells. I decided to wait until I got home to put in an order and in my haste, i forgot the email address. It was a unique system, one where the tapes were provided and all you had to do was send in your money. There was an email confirmation first and the person asked that we keep the requests to 2 tapes. If it helps, all of the tapes were being purchased at Blockbuster in order to help out any EDA's for rockfest tickets. If anyone knows what i'm talking about, i'd appreciate it if you could privately email with the person's address. thanks a lot. jeff. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 May 1997 18:18:24 -0500 From: Jessica Subject: Re: SJC: #jewel on undernet reminder Jon Akers wrote: > > This is just a reminder to people that there is a Jewel discussion group on > the undernet network for IRC. On y107 in Los Angeles, they're doing this thing where if they play a live song, you have to be the 7th caller and you win all these y107 stuff. Well, while they were playing the Cranberries song "Linger", I called in and I was actually surprised, because I thought I was a little too early. But some guy picked up and he sounded really far away. I think he was the d.j., and at first, I thought I got the wrong # because he didn't say anything. I had to start off. It went something like this: DJ: Hello? M: Hello...are you playing the live song right now? DJ: Yes we are! M: What number am I? DJ: You're # 7!!! M: (a little shocked, and sounding really dorky) Yes! (Yes, that's all I said..heheh..I'm such a dork.) DJ: What's your name? M: Mark DJ: Your last name? M: Awit A-W-I-T DJ: Your SS #? M: (I told him to hold on, because I didn't memorize it; had to go to my computer to tell him) DJ: Okay, so here's the deal [he starts telling me that I won all these things from them], but since you're only 17, you're not eligible for the grand prize. This was the biggest drawback. The grandprize is a concert in Houston with the Wallflowers, Bush, Depeche Mode, Counting Crows, and and and...ahh..I can't believe I lost this! =( Jewel!!! I want to see her soooo badly, and because I'm a freaking year younger, I can't. I would give it all up and all those other bands just to see her. =( That's the main reason I called too. Why didn't they tell me that if you're under 18, you're not eligible for that stuff? And when they announced my name on the radio a few minutes ago, they didn't even mention that. They lied and said that I was eligible for the grand prize. I guess they don't want the public, especially the younger ones, to stop listening to them. Okay, so just so you know if you call, you won't be eligible for that. =( Arghh...anyways, we both say thanks for calling and thanks for the stuff and all that other stuff, and we hang up. I was probably the boringest winner they've ever had. Oh well, at least I won the little things, but no concert! =( Next year, baby!! Actually a 10 more months!
