Even though I knew there was no concert i decided to go there. It was really fantastic. I met Kris Kane and the Crying Angel who were really sad that the concert couldn't take place due to the illness of Jewel. We wish her all the best and a happy birthday in Oslo. It was really wonderful talking to them and I enjoyed it very much. During our conversation we got to one question: Will there be a concert in Berlin on the 26th. If it takes place Kris would take a later flight and go to the concert. Otherwise he would leave again on monday to the USA. So if anyone get some information please contact me: email: ugje@rz.uni-karlsruhe.de I got the phone number of Kris in Cologne so I'll give him the information I receive. Thank you very much. Hey there, Well, since everyone is trying to say "Happy Birthday" in different languages, here is a birthday wish in Polish: Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji urodzin! That actually means, "Best wishes for your birthday", but close enough. Allie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 22:28:15 EDT From: spacelysprockets@juno.com (Joseph C Cheng) Subject: A fledgling angel Greetings Angels, I don't know how group therapy sessions go, but because this is my introductory post, I'll begin with, "Hi, my name is Joseph and I'm a Jewel-aholic. At first I didn't think much of it: a video now and then on MTV and VH1; then singing along when Jewel was on the radio; but I found myself needing more and More and MORE, UNTIL... But seriously, I've been a fan of Jewel's music for 'bout 3 weeks now. I had never been particularly interested in contemporary music; my exposure to it was limited to my friends' hip hop and those Mariah Carey/Celine Dion-ish covers--stuff that's as inspiring as a STUMP. So, relegated mostly to golden oldies, my ear for music had remained dormant for a long time. In eighteen years of life, I probably know more about Papua New Guinea than music. (I don't expect much empathy, so I'll settle for your pity.) And along came Jewel. Try not to hate me too much for this, but I bought "Pieces of You" a few weeks ago only for the reasons that I thought YWMFM was a charming melody and Jewel was a hottie. Boy-oh-boy was I shocked when I finished the disc! From beginning to end I found Jewel's music to be enthralling, provoking, and so easy to open up to; I hadn't experienced anything like it since my dad got "Tapestry" oh so long ago. (Yes, that is how LAME I am; I cannot think of another record since 1971 to compare to POY.) Within a few hours of listening to POY, I was thoroughly convinced that Jewel's was a sound of which I wanted to hear much more. Two days later, I surfed the web and a number of Jewel sites. Watching a bit of her San Diego concert on the Mediadome site and reading about Jewel's other performances, I thought "I MUST see this for myself!" And three days later, I was in possession of tickets--lousy ones though they may be--to her Jones Beach concert. (I've never been to a concert before!!!) I guess I've been pretty enthusiastic about this. :-) The worst/best thing is, I've found it difficult to listen to anything else now. I have been without my disc for a few days--a terrible thing--because I lent it to a friend in exchange for a Susanna Hoffs CD. Oooooohhh, I know what you're thinking (if you've listened to Susanna Hoffs, trust me, I know), but let me expound: my friend and I are trying to convince each other to go to the concerts of our respective favorites. So we exchanged discs because I was unfamiliar with Hoffs and he Jewel. Simple right? Boy-oh-boy, let me tell you, it was torture!!! I almost died after going over his disc a second time. Images of STUMPS once again congealed in my head. I believe in the adage 'if you don't have anything good to say...' but really, that CD sucked soooo bad and soooo hard, it made my head spin. And it made me miss my Jewel CD even more. I returned the CD the next day, but my friend still held onto POY. Hearing Jewel's damn tunes in my head all day long, I was driven to buy the YWMFM single; fortunately it only set me back 3 beans. Since my friend still has the album, the single has been on HEAVY rotation for the past few days. At this point, I'm afraid that my enthusiasm may erupt into a fanaticism, about which, frankly, I'm pretty concerned. I realize that your reading this dribble may have been a strain, but thanx for reading nonetheless. I really know no one with whom to talk about Jewel, so I guess I needed to write this long, meandering post--I should have warned you that I'd pull a Tolstoy. When I signed onto the mailing list, I thought I would just receive touring info and trivial miscellany and such. I was shocked to find such an incredible world of Jewel-enthusiasts, all of whom maintain such close relationships and correspondences. The love you guys share seems to extend far beyond Jewel's music, and I've found reading your EDA list a wonderful experience. I suppose the atmosphere you've all created in this mail forum made me more comfortable with writing this post. Now that you've finished this entire spiel, first, Congratulations!, and second, thank you--you truly are angels. Joey BTW--can anyone help me find Innerchange Days/Jewelstock/or whatever stuff? I hope these tapes aren't too hard to get. Being new to this, I don't know what is usually involved in these transactions, but if they require my running naked through Central Park screaming "EDAs rock my world!" I would just ask that you to wait until the weather gets a bit warmer. But seriously, I'd be really appreciative and willing to do anything, humiliating or otherwise, to get the recordings. (I have neither pride nor shame!) of course, SPECIAL shout-out to the brithday later. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 22:32:26 EDT From: spacelysprockets@juno.com (Joseph C Cheng) Subject: fledgling angel (cont'd) WHOOPS, let me finish that-- special shout-out to the birthday girl, Jewel. peace. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 1997 19:30:23 -0700 From: Victor Igor Wasylczenko Subject: NJC: Letter from John-Eric John-Eric asked me to post this: I am looking for two room mates. I don't believe it's necessary for me to list every type of music I enjoy, especially considering that nearly all of them have already been mentioned by others. So far I haven't read a single message in this thread that didn't include at least a few of my own personal favorites. But I have a large appreciation for the many people who not only appreciate the same music as me, but can appreciate other music that I myself don't quite appreciate. *whew* So, just to mention a few that I haven't seen yet... Nanci Griffin, Lyle Lovett -- I saw both of them on "Austin City Limits". If it weren't for being bored on a Sat. evening (and spotting John Hagen in the later case), I wouldn't realise how wonderful these two performers were. Terri Allard, Shannon Whorrel (and September 67) -- Two local heroes. The Moon Seven Times -- I came across a fan page for them during a random web search. Based on the utter coolness of their name alone, I special ordered their CD. They are *very* good. Paul Anderson, Judy Tenuda, Stan Freburg, The Frantics, Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, Royal Canadian Air Farce, The Amazing Onionheads, The Foremen, Jim Infantino... and more. -- This music is commonly classified as "demented", need I say more? All featured on the nationally syndicated "Dr. Demento Show" (And yes, I know I left out "Wierd" Al Yankovic.) Utah Phillips -- he's more a story-teller than a singer, but man what stories! James, the Smiths, Afghan Wigs, King Missile, Frente, Portishead, PJ Harvey, Poe, Patti Rothberg, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Todd Snider, Francis Dunnery, Queensryche, KMFDM, .... I think that's enough for now. I'd suggest that if you haven't already, you go back and read all the other messages in this thread, and if you see a name that's unfamiliar, or that you just haven't heard anything by them in a while, go listen to them. There's wonderful music out there and you may be surprised to discover where it can be found.
