Since subscribing to the list in March, posting a greeting/hello and giving my praise of Jewel's heavenly art and how she moves me so, I have thus far not been greatly prompted to step up to the "podium"... until now. (though very busy schedule, I do read all posts and follow the pulse of the list) I have been a passionate fan of Pat Metheny/Group for some 18 years now. (seen him some 14 or 15 times!) As a "die hard" rocker teen in the late 70's, I discovered Pat late one night on San Antonio's premier rock station and was hooked. I'd never heard anything like it before, and since, never found another artist to compare...until I discovered Jewel. I can attest to the "parallels" mentioned above. Though the music is very different...I think the parallels reside in the "induced emotion" brought on by such profound music. Music felt in the core. I used to think it somewhat sad only one artist could affect me so. Now, I have two. (still somewhat sad though) This is not to say I don't like and appreciate any other music...I love to listen to all kinds of great music....I "experience" Jewel's and Pat's! For those of you who don't know Pat Metheny's music, I'll try to explain. Pat, as Jewel was, discovered in his teens and was quickly labeled a prodigy and guitar virtuoso. Though not always easy to categorize his music, he has won several grammys in the Jazz/Fusion categorys. Every album/cd released was unique and instills a different mindset. I think one great thing I love about his music is that he is not a commercial machine and grossly well known....which makes it very personal! Oh, there are no lyrics. (exception...collaberation with David Bowie on soundtrack for "Falcon and The Snowman", Song-"This is not America") This, to me anyway, allowed the mind to "wander" in any direction and draw feelings from within.(???) Actually, before discovering Jewel, I really didn't think any music with lyric could do for the mind what instrumental could do. Jewel's does...sooooo much emotion! (okay, I'll stop gushing now) If any may be inspired to sample a Pat M. cd and would like a recommendation....hmmm, that really tough. I would suggest a PM-Group release as some of his collaborations and solo works may be a bit intense for a "newbie".... 'Still Life...Talking' or 'Letter From Home' would be a safe bet. Ironically, PM also has a great web presence, mailing lists, and cyber-followers. Two great pages can be found at: http://www.patmethenygroup.com/ http://www.gilman.com/Metheny/home_page.html Just one more thought. As Nathan said above..Pat never "sold out". He always did things his way and cranked out alot of great music. I'm a little discontented(?) that Jewel has soooo much great music that may never commercially be available or heard by the general public. Anticipating the SNL appearance, I imagined just her and her guitar doing, say, 'Pieces of You' or 'Morning Song' or etc. Not to say 'YWMFM' and 'WWSYS' are not fabulous works but I'd guess she'd preferred other selections. I know the SNL thing was a big thread here before.....I don't think the large band/sax thing was very complimentary to her art. I wonder what she thought?? Okay, Lastly(I swear), as I hope it is obvious how much I cherish and appreciate Jewel's music, I can't get enough. I have 'worn out' (yeah, I know, I saw the thread) my 'POY' cd, VH1 video tape(thanx Mike Connell, and have replayed her Seattle/Paramount performance in my head 1000 times.(Front row!) And I'm jones'en for some more. I have watched and tried to understand the tape trees, EDA cover tape(?), etc and don't know how/where to jump in. Would someone care to "adopt" me and show me the ropes? I don't have anything right now to offer except the shared adoration of Jewel and her beautiful self. I read with great envy of the Jewelstock experiences and personal interactions with Jewel herself. I hope someday I may reflect on similar experiences. Thanks for listening........David davelee@gte.net P.S.- The birthday gift was right on target!
