What terrific posts from Stephanie and Aaron and all EDAs who've been posting this week. (I just read their posts back to back and now I'm into a new pile of EDA mail.) This Angel needs a ride to the Starry Night EDA gathering in California -- July 10 is far enough away to get organized (and If my assignments still aren't finished, then I'll just resign and take up farming, or maybe folk-singing...). I live on an island off the west coast between Seattle and Vancouver so if there are any B.C. or Washington or Portland EDAs heading to Californiastock (hey, it'll be awfully close to the first anniversary of Jewelstock), let's start planning how to get there. (I don't drive, so I'll take a bus, train or hitch if there's no carpooling going on...). BTW, I've been so busy I've probably missed these announcements but have Lilith Fair tickets gone on sale for the Cali shows yet? And some day maybe there'll be an EDA gathering on my island -- it's beautiful here. You can see all the stars... Hi, First, quick info: Jewel will not be providing the voice of Epiphany in that Fox(Disney?) animated program that someone previously mentioned to the list. Sorry to be so vague but I forgot the name of the show/movie or who posted about it. But I did check on this & she is not involved in any such project. I'd also like to add a big thanks to all who've been writing me privately with encouraging words lately. I haven't the time to respond to all of you, but I love hearing from you & I definitely read each & every one. This past week has been one of the best in a looooong time for the list, too. It's great seeing so many more EDAs hooking up with each other. That's the "X" factor that makes this list so special (in case you're new here & wondering....). There's another "in house" project I've been working on lately & I want to briefly tell you about it. It regards a brand new series of authorized tape trees. I want to begin a brand new series to be called "FUTURE FOLKLORE". Its to consist of special EDA related non-Jewel performances. The 1st two volumes of this series are now in production. They will consist of 2 100 minute audio cassettes featuring all the performances at both The Hot Dog Fest(featuring Poltz & Stinky) from Dana Point,CA & The EDA Cafe (Featuring Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel) from Boston recently. Permission has been granted from all the artists & the recordings are quite nice. Tegan Godwin captured the entire HDF performance & I recorded the EDA Cafe myself (with Phil & Dennis' help). The performances at these "now famous events" are really special & contain much unreleased material. Those who attended either event will testify to the magic that occured. (by the way, I'm a longtime Cindy Lee Berryhill freak. Her & Elizabeth's performances at EDAC are simply incredible!) Although it'll be a little while before the tapes are ready & Dennis finishes designing the artwork, we need to figure out a new network for distribution. Mike Connell is no longer available to administrate the massive "authorized tape trees" & so someone else is needed to take on such a beast. Mike told me he'd be willing to advise this "new administrator" but cannot do it anymore himself. Those who've survived the many free distributions in the past, know that this is a relatively thankless (& extremely frustrating, at times) job. It's also very important to me to include "branches" of this tree that will take care of Cindy Lee's mailing list & The Rugburns list. I want this to be shared amongst all three lists. I know we have folks that cross-pollinate these other lists. (I obviously love challenges! ;-) I realize we're starting from scratch again here, but I think this series has great potential. Like anything we try to do, its going to take serious organizational skills & a LOT of volunteer time. I'm not asking for volunteers at this point. I simply want to see how much interest exists in such a project & we'll figure out who can do what later on. At this point simply think about this project & when I return (after Memorial Day) maybe we can begin to figure out how to accomplish this. Feel free to post ideas to the list, but please save any private emails to me (about this) until next week at the soonest. I also sincerely hope that once Jewel's birthday is over, that we continue to follow the path we've begun travelling down in regards to The EDA Foundation. The JPK Trust was a phenomenal beginning, so lets continue figuring out where this is headed. I see great things happening all around us & I know with this group of people, the potential is limitless. Have a wonderful weekend y'all!! Ginsberg had gone two years without a Buddhist teacher when his friend Philip Glass introduced him to Kyabje Gelek Rinpoche. Rinpoche, the spiritual director of Jewel Heart, soon became Ginsberg's close friend and spiritual mentor, a man with whom he had an immediate connection. Over the years, Ginsberg became fiercely dedicated to Jewel Heart, serving on the Governing Board (along with Glass and others) and dedicating his time for such events as the annual Jewel Heart benefit at Hill Auditorium, where he performed last year with Patti Smith. Because of his loyalty, it only seems fitting that the first Jewel Heart benefit since Ginsberg's April 5 death be combined with a memorial service to honor the poet. Earlier this year, Ginsberg had planned to return to Ann Arbor on May 24 for another benefit concert with Patti Smith. In honor of Ginsberg's memory, the concert will go on; collaborating with Smith will be former 10,000 Maniac Natalie Merchant, along with guitarist Lenny Kaye and poet Anne Waldman - who co-founded the Naropa Institute with Ginsberg in Denver, Colo. Interestingly, the show will take place on the 49th day after Ginsberg's death, a number that is significant in Tibetan Buddhist practice as a day to be accompanied with religious rituals and intense prayer. Before the concert, at 7 p.m., there will be brief religious services for Ginsberg in both the Tibetan Buddhist and Jewish traditions. Rinpoche will lead a prayer with several Tibetan monks from the Gyuto Monks Tantric Choir, known for their unusual musical collaboration with the Grateful Dead. University Prof. Elliot Ginsburg will then represent Ginsberg's longtime friend, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, reading the Kaddish, the traditional Jewish prayer for the dead. Last, Ginsberg's longtime secretary, Bob Rosenthal, will read some of the poet's most recent works, including the funeral poem "Gone, Gone, Gone," written shortly before his death. The concert, a patchwork of poetry and music, will commence at 8 p.m. The winner of this year's Jewel Heart poetry contest to honor the life and times of Ginsberg will read his or her poem, followed by a night of talent and tribute. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Michigan Union Ticket Office, Jewel Heart, Shaman Drum or Mayflower Bookshop. All proceeds from the concert support Jewel Heart, which says it is "dedicated to the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism and to the practice of this rich tradition within the context of contemporary life." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 May 1997 15:32:38 +0200 (MET DST) From: Lisa Golmen Subject: Jeweloss.. not-so-happy-thoughts.. Well, Alan's post indicated she had the flu which can be a lot worse. In that event, a lot is riding on your immune system. Sore throat, coughing, fever, etc depending on the intensity of the virus and how crippled your immune system already is. It's amazing that her tour schedule would be planned without at least a day's worth of break every week or so. It's very difficult to be at your best as a performer when you're constantly wasted. (I've heard otherwise for Steve Poltz, but that's another story ^_^;;;) Brings up memories of what happened during the Tiny Lights Tour when she got sick then. If the record company just didn't plan such an intensive schedule, she'd be healthy and probably a lot happier- not to mention getting more sleep. Then she wouldn't need to get sick and cancel performances because her body is saying it needs a major time-out. There are a few things the human body can go for a while without, but the control systems (Neuropsych studies kicking in) in the brain absolutely cannot go without sleep, glucose, and oxygen. You can get away with sleep deprivation once in a while, but any more than a week or so and you're asking for some serious problems. Two weeks and it starts to become painful and some bodily functions start to fail. 3-4 weeks (depending on individual) and it becomes fatal. > Any way to get some EDA chicken soup to Norway?! I'm betting that her mom is taking good care of her, and plus she'll get the wonderful B-day gift tomorrow. :) Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 May 1997 16:13:56 -0500 (EST) From: SM_KARTALOPO@ACAD.FANDM.EDU Subject: NJC< but yes I am plaguing your email with 1 more poem OK, so last night I wrote another poem. I know it may just stir up the "they suck" crowd, but I hope everyone's mature enough. My personal tastes (that aren't local bands) are really eclectic, including Jewel,U2,Who,Tull,Phish,Doors,Chieftains,Pogues,Clancy Bros.,Candlebox,DMB,REM, Ben Folds Five,Squirrel Nut Zippers,Harry Connick Jr,Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Letters to Cleo,Creedence,Wild Colonials,Dream Theater,Bad Religion,Morphine and Spacehog(to whom one of my friends' dad is renting a harpsichord) If you're ever in the Boston/Providence area, check out Wheat,Hallucinating Arkansas(both better than 99% of all signed bands,in my opinion),Ray Corvair Trio,Mudhens,40 Men & a Lama or Sterlings. If people see things they have in common with others, they can tip them off to other, similar bands. I also think that trading/sending local bands' tapes can be great for everyone involved (esp. the bands). This way,(at least in theory) people can experience great bands before they get exposed to all the MTV hype that destroys so many cool artists. YOU ARE WAY TOO COOL!!!! - -Erin ( Angel standing by) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 May 1997 21:46:08 +0200 From: Paul Andreassen Subject: Jewel show - -- - - Paul Andreassen OK, I'm pretty much up there with Lucy, if ya know what I mean!:) Jewel was magnificent, she looked incredibly beautiful, so much so that I didn't really notice her clothes. The show was in a conference room at the her hotel, and it wasn't a good place to have a consert at all. I sat on the floor, first row, 5-6 feet away from her. It was great. She recognized me from the airport and said hi!! :) She started the show with a song i forget the title of (waiting for lightning, waiting for you), which was awesome. It really touched my heart. Then she played Morning Song, and once during that song she winked at me!! (It's you that I adore/I'm gonna give you some more/ WINK!!!) I was in heaven for a moment. I think the next song was called Frigile Flame, but I might be wrong. I hadn't heard it before, but I really liked it. Spanned from merry play with words to intense mournful soul. Then came Angel Standing By, and I have to say, it was the highpoint of the show, Incredible vocals on that one, and lyrics that bring tears to my eyes. I just closed my eyes and let my self go. A tear actually snuk it's way down my cheek, and when I opened my eyes, at the end of the song, Jewel was smiling tenderly at us. What a great song! She talked about how she had, sort of stolen a line from Bob Dylan, and about her first meeting with him. Was very cute/funny/charming. And she proved her great charisma. SIBTW followed, and it was really great, she had a humourous spark in her eyes during that one. (I'm sorry S. Petersburg is a lousy town, got a big laugh from the audience.) Then she told me it was really great that I made it, so she had at least one EDA in the crowd. Thanked me for the flowers, and the card, and asked me if I wanted to hear Foolish Games or Near You Always. I chose Near You Always. It was really good, and I had this great feeling that she was playing it just for me. She kept looking and smiling at me. Totally incredible. YWMFM was next, and she told us that she'd tought it was the stupidest song she'd ever written when she wrote it. She'd vowed never to play it in public. :) Then she did a great finale with WWSYS. She really showed off her great voice on this one. It was awesome! After the show, I got to talk to her for a little while, I gave her a Teddy Bear for her birthday from me and Lisa (2 norwegian eda's) and a letter. She told me to say HI!! to all of ya'll! So here goes: Hi, and best wishes to all the Every Day Angels out there from Jewel! We talked a little about the show, the horrible room, how glad she was that at least one EDA had made it. That kind of stuff. I was so blown away by her performance, and the fact that I was standing and talking to her, that I forgot to ask for her autograph and picture. She said she'd be back in October, and I'll definitively go see her then, even if it means having to be AWL from the army! Then Lenedra came and dragged her off to bed. She gave me a hug, and said she hoped I didn't catch whatever she had. Then I went hope in a daze, and sat down and wrote this. Love you all to death! <<< I see friends shaking hands, saying how are you, what they're really saying is, I love you >>> - -Luis Armstrong "Nightswimmer" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 May 1997 16:17:59 -0700 From: Eddie Davis Subject: NJC: Help Me!
