Phil; an Angel in CanEDA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 03:09:07 -0700 From: Farr Shepherd Subject: The "GREAT" EDA Adventure Through My Eyes Well sorry that it took so long for me to get my story out. I didn't get homw until sometime around 11:00 due to flight delays which forced me to go straight to work :( But Anyways, It all began with an exicted Oklahoman oversleeping on Thursday until 1:00 which forced me into hurry mode and wisking off to the airport. Turns out that I didn't have Rob and Tammys phone number and was a little concerned about being picked up at the airport bedcause I hadn't had the PLEASURE of meeting anyone who was going to be there yet. Well, after I arrived a little late to the airport I was greeted by Rob with a sign with my name on it hollering accross the airport, WHEW, he found me. After we got to the house there was little time to catch up on some sotries and a get a good nights rest for the upcoming events, the only I got BTW (no thanks to those DAMN Harris Bros). Early to rise and off to work with Rob was the first event for me. Actually, I rode with him to work and then spent half a day in Manhatten, the IMAX theater is AWESOME!! When we got back to the house we were greeted by Tom Proven. Tom and I quickly became Kindergarten buddies as we took to making the EDA RollerCoaster. By the time we got it done Rob had got back with Gian, he thought we were FREAKS seeing how in to the crafts things we were :) Adam showed up a little later, WOW. I was SOO excited to meet him because he was my lifeline to Jewel and the reason I am an EDA today because of his beautiful page, I can't thank you enough Adam. About this time we all decided to see what was going on on the net. We all meet up with Anthony and Chelsey in the chat room. Rob "gave" them Adam and Chelsey was in AWE that she was talking with the "web-god" as she called him :) Well Anthony had to call Rob so he gave em the number and this triggered Chelsey into later calling and starting the game we called "Pass the Chelsey." It was great, we passed the phone around so she could talk to everyone who was there because she couldn't make it (What a Phone Bill she's gonna have :p). About this time is when Cornflake, the Ted-innator, Dennis, Chris, Tegan and friends, Paul, Lauren, Tom O'Brian, Mitch (the Every OtherDay Angel), David, Brooklyn and Renee, Amy, and Puddini showed up. It all seemed to happen so fast. We had a nice group for the evening, everyone was great and hugs were abundant. The hours flew by until sleep was calling and then I received my eviction notice from my bed in teh guest room that Dennis had moved in. As I took up camp in the floor we (Adam, Gian, and I) were almost asleep until Dennis comes in tripping over us and keeping us up for another 1-3 hours YAPPING :) Finally a few more Surprise guests really surprised us by arriving at some ungodly hour in the morning, this would be Tim, Mia, and Mustang Dan. Dan immediatly went back out to the Stallion for a little backseat nap until we would leave for the park. I think Eraic also showed up that mornig with Laura, Jared and Thirza also arrived then. I was soo tired it took us a few minutes to realize who each other were until we ran accross the room for a hug ;) After 2,986 showers we were outside arranging cars for the trip. The EDA caravan was finally off, 6 cars strong making frequent celebrity appearances on roadsides and occasionally finding Rob walking around in the middle of trafic. Eventually we made it to the park which begins part 2 of my story.............. First I wanted to say that I am sorry that ToweringSIS, Liz, Crunch, Duff, Cappello, John-Eric and the others weren't able to make it. I was really looking forward to meeting you and seenig you again. Second, I can't hank Rob and Tammy enough for opening their home to me. Rob acted as my Taxi and Tammy was my Mom for the weekend. I went into it thinking that I was going to be a burden on them becasue I was the first to arrive and the last to leave but they really made me feel welcome and I thank you endlessly for that. I feel that I was fortunate in that I really got to know everyone and talk with each of you a little. I would have like to talk with Mia, Amy, Thirza and Jared (Crash Boy II) more but I felt good overall in that I didn't stick with one group but was able to really get to know everyone. You all were so special to me and I really treasure each of your time with me. I would especially like to thank Dennis for taking me under his wing and making me feel I've been around since the beginning. I also really enjoyed the time spent with Adam. It was so great and RARE that he was able to make it and feel lucky that I was able to befriend him, he a very kind and generous person, one who we should all thank for the 20-30 hours a week the volonteers to his site for us. I wish that i could meet Jeff some day and thank him for the special thing that he has done for all of us. As I sit here and shed tears of happiness for the recent events, I REMEMBER that if it weren't for the kindness of Jeff, Adam, and Alan and all the others who have dedicated so much to the list none of us would have had the times that so many say are "The Best in Our Lives." Lets all try to remember that and save everyone a lot of heartache so we can continue to grow. Well, I now have about 40 more people than I did last week who I would like to keep closer to me than ever before. I want to sit here and tell each fo you haw much I enjoyed meeting each of you and the times we shared but I don't have the time to write an Encyclopedia right now. I hope all the newbies can see how much of a family we really are when you consider that people like me can tavel 1300 miles see people I have never meet and have one of the best times of my life. I encourage all who can to make it to any EDA event you can. There are a lot in the works, including RockFest which is only 4 weeks away. I will be there and eagerly await seeing you all agian and meeting all my new frieinds who will be there. Thanks for listenin, Farr PS It would be great if we all took the time out to THANK Jeff, Alan, and Adam when you can for their hard work. Thank god for Puddini and the Yellow cpa that sent Tom Chasing Twweties in the park :) The whole crowd waited for Dennis for about an hour while he safty checked all the rollercoasters for us until we left for the SAFARI. We somehow managed to find Dennis and all but Tom and Mitch load on the bus and to see the wonders of the Jungels. It was awesome. Dennis and I had the rotating nappers next to us which kept us cracking up. Finally we made it too the park about 2 or 3. We tried to hold the group together but were immidatly unsuccesful due to some impatience and the size. After most of the group I was with decided to go to the Batman show I went of with Christina to ride the Batman ride but got alked into riding the Rapids ride which ended up SOAKING US, I MEAN SOAKING US. I supplied water for the group for the rest fo the day by ringing out different parts of my clothes :) We meet back up with the others and started off on the TEDstavaganza. I din't know how to explain how the Ted-innator lasted through 5 rides on the Batman ride except that hes THE TED-INNATOER :) We all cruzed around making it to the Flught Simulaor ride and Virtual Games. Ted and I dogged it out in the simulators upside down unitl I had no more blood in my toes. WHEW. 7 had rolled aound and we were off to the designated meeting spot for EVERYONE in the park, thanks Dennis (how original). Some headed back to Club Campbell and others stayed as we made rounds with Ted on a few more rides. Off we were then about 9 to the Coca CaCampbell for a fun filled night of all kinds of stuff. We meet up with few more guests as we arrived: Stevie, Eddie Mitch's friend, and Russ. Most all of us sat in Awe as Steph read us some of her buetiful poetry, she was great. Reading it yourself is NO COMPARISON. She put such great emotion into it. Then we got into a Brief (yeah right) discussion of some EDAF stuff. I thought it was ironic that Dennis the Talker Harris brought the qiuet stick :) Memories of HotDog Fest and Hitchiker Joe then followed. I barely made it through them before the night had ended. Amy had to leave which was too bad, I really enjoyed talking with her. Day 3 was already here. We were off to a slow start for the EDA beakfast which caused us to have to all be broken up. Dan, Tim, Adam and I all sat together and started a huge scrambled egg food fight, j/k. About this time more people were leaving. some of us headed back to the Base to prepare for WAR. After Paintball got started it was ON. I had the first kill of the day which David is still feeling. I was then the second kill and was forced to sit on the side to watch the first game end up tied. After the newness wore off Team Harris was kicking some Paint Butt with stratigic hits causing Blood to fly. Didn't know the Ted-innator could bleed did ya?? After Tegan left with her crew from NH we switched fields to a little more fast paced field which led to another Harris victory with Dennis getting killed early and the Laren and Farr Strike Force doing a joint flag capture. Led by Rage of Crash Boy, Chris, David and the others we were defeated on the 4th game as goodwill gesture :) David then took Hitchiker Joe and his friend to Brooklyn, never to be heard from again :) After we got back to R&T's we orded Chinese and practiced catching flys with our chopsticks :) Soon the pictures were flowing, and Futons were braking (thanks CornFlake). BTW, this was where the comment about Eric having the biggest handfull of my nuts that any guy will ever get," comment came from as the Futon came crashing down :) 3D pics were flying and nuts were itching (had to be there :P ) Soon it was down to Dennis, Chirs, Gian, Rob, Tammy and I telling old war stories about the day. After long goodbys Dennis and Chris left and the cleanup began. Rob had to break out the skillsaw and welder to fix the couch and I rented a street sweeper to clean up the Chinease :0 After a little chat in the Undernet Gian and I hit the sack for our early depatures were soon approaching. Next thing I knew Gian kicked me and told me he was leaving and then Rob kicked me later to tell me I was leaving 8) Soon I was at the airport waiting for a few hours for a late plane and then a few more hours in Dallas waiting for a late connection. I was then straight off to work and eventually home. It was a BLAST Farr Please Read the Notes in my next Post ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 06:53:00 -0700 From: "Larry G." Well I finally got some much needed sleep and now feel up to writing my memories about this past weekend. First thank you Rob and Tammy so much. I hope it we didn't cause too much damage.. ;) And we really tried not corrupting your daughters too much. ;P Okay on with the story.. For scores and seven... oops.. too far back.. Fast forward.. Friday I left around 7pm to pick up Rachel, and instead of following her directions I took a detour. I made it to the Belchertown pharmacy without a problem, but it was the task of getting to her house from the center of town that was the problem. Thanks to modern technology I was able to get directions from Rachel. So I headed off for what should have been a 5 min trip took 10 min and I still couldn't find her street. I pulled over and called again, and that's when she told me to look across the street. So I did, and she informed me that the street I was looking at was her street. After driving up and down her driveway she finally caught up to be with most of her stuff and got into the SuperTruck (tm) and off we went to get Erica. We picked up Erica a short time later without incident, well except for the beef jerky spitting thing. (That was good jerky Rachel!!!) On that way down to the Campbell compound we made a fuel stop and picked up supplies. It was there that I got a new job working at the mobil station. I didn't get paid or anything, but I was allowed to use the employee bathroom.. (I had to rearrange the store sunglasses display first..) It was about 2 am when we pulled into the Campbell's driveway. Erica and Rachel were out of the SuperTruck (tm) like a couple of jumpin' mexican beans. At some point it dawned on them that they misplaced me and turned.. Entering the house was exciting, I did the greeting thing for a couple of minutes and then explored the house taking a mental note of all the exits. I stayed awake for a little bit taking in all the conversations and listening to some people play on the guitars. But I could no fight the call of the sandman went to sleep on one of the couches. end of part one. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 11:10:04 -0500 From: "Gianfranco Covello" Subject: Re: njc: what else... The EDAdveture (Friday part B) Well, here's part B to Friday of the EDAdventure.... As i said in my previous post i was gonna briefly talk about my sleeping arrangments at the Campell Inn... It all started when Farr kindly showed me around the house because he arrived on Thursday and knew the place pretty good... Thanks Farr :-) So he procedes to bring me upstairs to where he slept the night before in the *bed*... so i lay all my stuff in that room only to find out that i would be sharing the room with Adam and Dennis and of course Farr(who was kicked out by that damn HarrisBros ;-)) After a looong night we decided to go to sleep, Farr, Adam and I were all ready to sleep, my eyes were closing slowly and then there were bright lights and noise everybody was wondering what the hell!!!... Of course it wouldn't be a 'Looong Night' without Dennis making it longer ;-) So he sits on his bed and looks around to see his pillow, well we left him the worst pillow, i mean what would an EDA gathering be without torturing Dennis in it ;-) so he starts to scream and ramble on that he wants a good pillow la la la :-) but of course what would Dennis be without telling one of his many stories before bedtime so we stayed up listening to Dennis and laughing it up at his stories, great stories Dennis :-) All in all i was very happy to sleep with(but not *really* sleep with) these awesome people :-) so this all ended at around 6:30am... and then i was kicked awake to go take a shower and get ready for the Six Flags Adventure :-) More to come... (your very own crazy canuck) Gianny P.S. thanks Farr for saying what you did about Alan, Adam and Jeff, but also i would like to thank Dennis, Rob, Greg Dunn, and Tom Proven for their work also, and anybody else who has worked selflesly to do projects for the list :-) I love you all... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 10:28:48 -0500 From: Carrie Subject: Kinda JC: The Fake Jewel On AOL Hi all! Saturday (Part A) Well, i was awakened by some noise out in the hall and overheard that there were new arrivals that came in.... I slowly get up from about 3 hours of sleep which wasn't that good considering that the night before i was awake for 25 hrs straight but i wasn't gonna make it bother me :-) I walk out the the next room where i see that the party moved to this spot... I look around and see a few new faces... I see David, Tim Burke, Amelia(Mia) S. Vlah, and the infamous Dan (Da Man) Stark, Eric(crashboy) and Laura. I introduced myself to Eric later on downstaires when we were ready to leave for breakfast... he did not recognize me *yet* :-) I noticed that Dan after driving forever to get there was extremely tired and tried to sleep in the bed but then decided that he should be in his car to sleep.. :-) I didn't introduce myself to the new arrivals yet and just stood there, (a little side note, i talk to Tim, Mia and Dan on IRC all the time) So David comes up to me and introduces himslef and i introduced my self as "Hi i'm Gian from Toronto" i always introduced myself like that, everyone found it amusing for some reason ;-) So when i said who i was Tim and Mia jump up and say "Gian!!", so i was very happy to finally see them :-) But they were exhausted from the ride up... Then we play "lets make Gian wait last to take a shower" :-) so i ended up holding everyone else up before we left :-) We then decide on the car pooling, i was in Paul's car, thanks Paul for the *back* seat... its exactly that, i sat in his station wagon in the trunk space :-) but there was a seat back there but it was facing to the back of the car so i was able to see the car in back of us :-) We decide to go to the local IHOP breakfast place and we honestly thought that they had a table for 30-40 people open all the time, but we were surprised that they didn't so we went to the only other alternative, we ate breakfast at McDonalds :-) Farr and Eric began to throw paper wrappers at Dennis (Farr ya crazy Okie) and i was talking with Dan... Me and Dan were playing off the *Canadian thing* all weekend :-) comparing and what not :-) We were at about 35 people or so and we headed out after breakfast to the (un)amusement park :-) I was again in the backspace of Paul's car and snapping pictures at everyone with my camera (btw, i took about three rolls of film worth of pics so i'll send them to anyone who would like some) We were close to the park by now and i notice some people in different cars waving at me, these are people i have never seen before and they were for some reason waving to me... i didn't know what to make of it, did they think i was some sorta freak or something, i know that i was sitting backwards but hey!! for a second i thought they were gonna feed me or something :-), well needless to say that everybody had a good laugh at it :-) We finally get into the park, and wait for the arrivals that were supposed to show up at the park... Thanks to the Great Puddini's bright yellow hat we found them all, so we meet up with Anthony and Rene, Jared and Thirza, and the third Tom of the day, Tom Miles who brought, Christina Ferrara, Joshua Baumer and Stephanie who was just ready to be tickled without even getting tickled, that's some supernatural power you have there Steph ;-) When we finally get all together we seem to have lost Dennis, we waited for awhile and then decided to go to the Safari without him cuz he was probably wanted to try out his comfy nike mocasins out :-) We get on the Tram and arrive at the bus stop for the safari, well lemme tell you that all these parks are the same, you buy a ticket to buy another ticket to get a bus ticket to that ticket...blah blah blah... get my point :-) The bus is ready to depart and then we see Dennis running after it, wow how did he find us... we tell the bus driver to speed up but Dennis didn't let up.. :-) actually... Dennis met up with us when we were purchasing our bus twickets, but we still felt like running away ;-) The only two people left out of the bus tour were the Tom Tom bros... (Proven and O'Brien) but i think it was planned, they were showing signs of affection all weekend ;-) So let the Safari begin... I was sitting next to Dan Stark which was just so funny, hmm, was it a coincidence that the two Canadians sat next to eachother.. don't know.. Me and him were wise cracking the tour guide because he was doing a poor job of explaining everything and then failed at attempts to be funny :-) it was very funny :-) Then we get to see two elephants *dancing*, Girafes crossing the street, monkeys getting rides from tourists :-) it was very entertaining... We then wait for the Tom Tom Bros to finish with their tour and we decide to get a little to eat, hmmm, you really get a bang for your buck here, it was like 10 dollars for a drink and fries..., or should i say a drink and some fries with my salt.. :-) (and yes i'm talking about U.S. currency, not my monopoly money.. ;-)) Now on to the park of unamusement ;-) We first went to see a stunt show with the theme of batman and robin... it was spectacular.... well not really, more like spectacularly bad.. ;-) i could have done a better job with fircrackers in my back yard.. :-) Dennis really was hoping to see some blood though, that would have made it interesting ;-) After that we decided to go on some rides... well it wasn't going to happen because the lineups were at about a three hour wait, obviously because their were about three good rides in the whole park but i'm not complaining, later i find out that i could have gone on a few more with Ted's assistance but i was too tired by then... Movin on... So when most of the group decided to wait in line for a ride Me, Dan, Tim and Adam split from the rest... Our conversation was mostly of how unamused we were with the service and rides ;-) And of course me and Dan were comparing Canada's Wonderland to the New Jersey Six Flags and Canada wins gold... Canada wins Gold... ;-) We were for some odd reason following Tim and it was an adventure in itself :-) but later on we met up with Rachel and the Mama Llama Amy :-) i'm glad i got to meet Amy as well. We finally get on a flight simulator type ride and hmm.. maybe i should explain it in another post, wow this is getting very long, sorry people.. :-) ok, i promise, 3 more of these and i'll stop ;-) more to come... Farr ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 May 97 13:56:23 MDT From: "Cadet Aaron C. I got to see the Rugburns in concert last night and they were great. It was a free concert and there were only about thirty people there. They were taking requests and talked to those of us who showed up for awhile. It was cool meeting Steve and the other members of the band. They did a little of everything including some great improv. I think they were a little dissapointed at the turnout, but they had a great show anyway. So far two options have come up that are the best in my mind. The best idea in terms of combining a gathering and an actual listening to jewel in person is the Aug 1 Lilith fair option. The next best is to maybe have a smaller gathering in Savannah. While no great amusement parks are nearby, there is plenty to do. If anyone has any ideas in regards to time and whether or not we could actually do this let me know and I will pass it on to the rest of the southern EDA's. If you are a southern EDA post your email address to me and I will do a quick compilation. In terms of the Lilith fair option, me personally cannot go do to other responsibilities like a swimmeet that I have to sell at at 6am the next morn. Lucky me!! It would not behoove me to drive 2 1/2 hours one direction, watch the show for about 5-6 hours, drive back 2 1/2 hours, sleep 1 hour, drive 1 hour, take 1hour to set up meaning I would have to be USC Columbia pool at 5am and work all day there. Not a good idea with the addition of having an 8 hour workday on sun. Fun Well get back to me on the idea of another gathering sometime in late june, or august. If we have to we could do something here in sleepy Augusta, only prob, very little goes on here.
