Mike, You are robbing yourself of a chance to hear some great music. Don't do that to yourself. Stop trying to put music into the categories the music industry has forced on us. Be yourself. Make finding good music an adventure. There are gems in every category of music. Certainly some kinds of music will please you more. It may only be one great county song you will find that you like, but I'm sure it is out there. If you like Jewel, it means you have great taste in music. I don't think we will ever see Jewel with one of those huge Dolly Parton wigs or sequence dresses. But we have seen her in that see thru top number. I use to laugh at people dressed as cowboys. That was until I ran out of gas on a hot interstate highway in the pan-handle of Texas. As I stood in the hot sun with no tree anywhere close by for shade, I wished I had a huge cowboy hat with that big brim for shade. As I started to walk and got followed by circling buzzards, a rattlesnake came close enough to my feet that I knew why those big high thick leather boots are important. All those country guys are just rockers with different clothes. Go out and give another listen to some of the rockers like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Prine, Phish, Grateful Dead and many others that have been greatly influenced by country. You may just find you do like all kinds of music as long it is good. Igor ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 May 1997 14:07:39 PDT From: "Andrea .........." I initially subscribed to the digest and have been reading the posts for a couple of days..I think I'm gonna like it here !!!! :) I saw Jewel in concert here in February and it was a WICKED show. The thing I love most about her music is that it's so simple yet, there's so much emotion..and her lyrics are incredible :) The concert was my 1st chance to hear any songs that weren't on POY. My absolute fave is 1000 miles away....and Absence of Fear is a very close 2nd. I'm sure this has been mentioned before as this list has been around for a while, but this website has a lot of real audio songs, not just clips, but complete songs and this is where I got my copies of the unreleased songs... http://members.aol.com/jewelpage/index.html Anyway, looking forward to getting to know y'all (and btw,if anyone wants to adopt me, I'd be grateful!) :) Have a great weekend! Igor, in Mike's defense, there is a new so-called country station in L.A.; someone recently phoned in to request something by Merle Haggard and was told "we don't play dead people on this station." This "I swear it's true" story was told by the host at Jack's Sugar Shack last night, after Gregory Page's too-brief set. If I had my guess, it's this mentality of many of the so-called country stations that Mike finds depressing. I love dead people! A lot of country misicians today are really playing rehashed rock n' roll oldies, so of course country stations will get confused about who is or who isn't a country musician. Sure, some of Jewel's songs have some country influence, but that doesn't make her a country singer. Are the Rolling Stones a country band just because they play Honkey Tonk Women or a few other country sounding songs? Obviously not. Danke, Casey ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 May 1997 22:50:32 EDT From: beccasmith@juno.com (Rebecca A Smith) Subject: NJC: Sensitivity in children (long post) (Fred, don't read) Hello all! I was at a dinner this evening, a pretty casual affair at a home, with several children between the ages of, say, 4 and 10 years, and I made some observations. Observations which fit in pretty solidly with the lyrics, "Be careful with me, I'm sensitive, and I'd like to stay that way." Some of the children seemed to be silently screaming out the same message. I've noticed how over the years, more and more children are becoming aggressive with each other, with their families, and with their environments. And as hard as it is to want to acknowledge this, there were times when I saw, tonight and at other times playing with and observing children, there seem to be floods of frustration and even hatred reflected in their faces and in their actions. I don't believe that children themselves are becoming worse, but I do believe that they are like sponges, and pick up not only words and actions from the world around them, but also energy, be it positively or negatively charged. People may say that this is all just a bunch of silliness, but I don't think so. Things around us these days are more mixed up and crazy than ever. How can children, as perceptive and curious and prone to discovery as they are, be expected to be completely immune to this? The answer is, they can't. Often, children get so frustrated that they act out even violently. We need to be teaching our youth how deal with frustration in more positive ways. Granted, young children can sometimes get overwhelmed with things, but perhaps if we set examples ourselves of being more mild and positive, we could help offset all the busyness they encounter. Think about it: if children are brought up in an environment where they are constantly being rushed around and are pushed to meet grown-up standards and such, they will be more frustrated than children who are raised in a more calm environment and taught to appreciate the beauty in small things, like a sunset or a flower. I realise that many parents themselves lead very busy lives and so they don't always have lots of time to spend with their children, and that when they do, they may not always be in the most relaxed frame of mind. With the way our world is, sometimes that can't be helped. But what if we were more alert to things to share with our children? All it would take is missing 5 minutes of the evening news to share a sunset with a little one, or a little while during the evening to look at the stars. Time spent with young people doesn't always have to be spent talking. Most children are brought up with television and teachers yammering all day, and if they are given a chance to unwind and explore the world around them in a peaceful way, they would likely welcome that chance. Thanks to all who read all the way through this post. I know it is really long, but I hope it gives some food for thought. : ) hugs, Becca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 May 1997 22:37:52 -0500 From: Greg Dunn Subject: NJC: Rugburns ROCK Indy 5/15 Sorry about the delay, Rugburns fans! Fatigue from lack of sleep and several intervening events kept me from the keyboard till this evening, and I'm almost asleep now. But since Duff pestered me to post this before it becomes as stale as last winter... :-) Well, since the December concert here in Indy and their performance backing Jewel in March, I've grown exponentially as a Rugburns fan. These guys kick royal butt in concert, and Steve Poltz is a god among songwriters. So when I found out that they were coming back to a very tiny venue called the Patio (not much bigger than the first floor of our house) I knew it was a must-see. We originally made plans at ChuckStock, and at the time Shelly was really excited about going, contingent on getting away from work of course. Unfortunately, at the last minute it looked like she would have to cancel, and my spirits drooped. Oh well, it looked like a number of local folk were going, so it would turn out to be a worthwhile gathering. I even managed to talk my wife into attending, though her work hours necessitated that she leave early; regrettably we drove separate cars. When we arrived about doors-open at 8:30, no one else we recognized was there. I scanned the crowd continuously, until at last a familiar face appeared: Neil the drummer from Toni's band. I greeted him, asking where Sharron was. The answer was that she was waiting for Shelly to arrive. Huh? Apparently she decided at the last minute to make a mad dash for Indy, throwing caution to the wind. That news was enough to raise my spirits. Another pleasant surprise was the arrival of Mike, the band's producer/recording engineer, and his wife Jo. I talked to them for a bit, and we started the evening's festivities off with a decent microbrew. A bit more waiting, and then I spotted a very tall woman and her petite companion entering the venue. Putting my beer down, I made it to the entrance in time to greet Shelly, who had just made the Toledo/Indy run in 3 hours. Happy that she was there and quite safe, I gave her a big hug. We joined the rest of the rapidly swelling group and caught up on past happenings while waiting for the opening act, Uvula. The opening band was a competent rock band with a decent mix of harder and softer stuff; in fact I understand that their bass player (a good vocalist and songwriter) played in another regional band that I quite enjoyed. While they were playing, John Castro and Stinky Jeff wandered in and I decided to go over and say hi. John was his usual charming self, and amazingly, recognized me from out two prior meetings. I handed him a set of pictures from the band, so he'd have some concert shots of his friend Sharron and her bandmates. Der Stinkmeister was busy greeting Shelly (it took about 5 minutes :) but when he spotted my Hot Dog Fest T-shirt, he grinned, pointed, and gave me a thumbs-up. I exchanged a brief greeting with him, and turned around just as another familiar face appeared out of the crowd. "Hi, Steve!" He almost stopped, wondering if I was going to accost him, but I just nodded and let him pass. He nodded and said "hi" on his way out the front door. So everyone was accounted for; as the opening band wrapped up their set, I found myself back among the locals, waiting for the 'burns to get ready for their performance. We hung out for a half hour or so, then decided it was time to move up front and get a good position by the stage before everyone else caught on. I ended up at stage right, in front of John's mic, and after what seemed like another hour of anticipation, the guys strode up to the stage amid shouts and whistles. They spent a few minutes checking connections, taping drum stands down, and making sure the mics worked; then Steve started off the show with a guitar groove, backed up by the other two, that turned into a line dance sort of thing between John and Steve, as they rocked back and forth in unison. Already it looked like a good evening. The Stinkster was in fabulous form, playing with a light but sure touch and holding Steve and John in sync very well. I remember all the guys grinning at each other a LOT, and there was plenty of interaction during the semi-improvised parts. I don't remember if the first song was "The Great Mystery" or "I Love Everything About You", but the other quickly followed, and they were off with a surprisingly mellow mood. In no particular order, they did "I Love You (You Know I Do)", "Girl With The Wandering Eye", "Now's Not The Right Time For Love", and the ABC Song; and that started an uptempo sequence. Then they did "Fence Around My Heart" (with the requisite and wonderful audience solo by Stinky Jeff), "UPS My Heart", "Mama", "War", "Tommy And Marla", "The Banana Song", "Lockjaw", and "Kiss Your Ass". Then it was slow down time again, with YWMFM (funny story about Steve trying to convince a random Jewel fan that he co-wrote the song), "Kicking Distance From Your Heart", "Morning Song" (the one that inspired Jewel to write her own song of the same name), "Broken Hearts", and "I Thought I Saw You Last Night". Favorite moment: Steve explaining that he and John were now going to re-enact the YWMFM video with John playing Jewel's part. Steve started nuzzling John and trying to play with his face; then they stopped, looked embarrassed, and started playing the song. Hilarious. They did another Indianapolis-based improv about some girl in the audience who was allegedly hassling Steve while he was playing. Another great moment: John casually took a swig of water during a break, then wandered over toward the drum kit where Stinky was messing around with something. Stinky stood up and sprayed the kit and John with... something liquid. John spewed his carefully concealed mouthful right in Stinky's face, enjoying the look of surprise at the unexpected retaliation. But, finally it was over, and we realized with sadness that they weren't going to do "Dick's Automotive" at all. OK, it was 1:30 AM, but still! The guys turned off their equipment and started mingling with the crowd... I would like to note that I saw John drink most of a beer during the performance, but Steve had maybe 2-3 small drinks and didn't seem at all affected. He was clearly having a great time, and his performance (guitar and vocal) was dead on. He pulled off some complex chord changes and riffs while talking to John off mic, and his obligatory "lie down and play while Stinky drums on his shoes" was very much a considered act rather than an uncontrollable paroxysm of craziness. :-) Actually, Stinky was a little wilder than Steve, while John appeared a little down -- though it didn't affect his performance at all. Early during the concert, I felt a nudge at my elbow, and a very petite young lady asked if she could stand next to me instead of behind me, where her vision was surely blocked. I let her stand on my left, which meant I was a little further away from stage center, but what the heck. She and her friend took up very little room and they were extremely polite. Not to mention huge Jewel fans! Heather (the first girl) had been to Jewel's concert in March, and was happy to hear that I was also there. I kept her informed with little tidbits about Jewel & Steve's music throughout the concert. She and Amy kept turning around at various points during the concert, hugging me, squeezing my hand, messing with my hair, and repeatedly thanking me for letting them stand in front. The amusing thing was, there was no one behind us -- the crowd was only 2-3 people thick and there was room to my right if they had wanted to lean on the stage. Yeah, I'm not blind; but I treated it as a compliment. No problem; they weren't overly forward or rude, and were clearly having a great time without drinking. Unfortunately, there was one guy who was sloppy drunk, and kept wandering through the crowd singing along, shouting inanities, and trying to cop a feel from several of the women -- including those around me. He tried to speak to one girl behind me, and when she leaned over to hear him, he attempted to lick her. She kicked him; he's extraordinarily lucky that I didn't know about it till the girl apologized to me for the disturbance. I told her she should have kicked him harder, in a softer spot. The girls to my left were much nicer to him than he deserved, even though he wasn't as rude to them. He tried to schmooze with me a couple of times, but the evil eye kept him at bay. I would have hated to have to kick him. :-) After the concert was clearly over, I dragged Sharron over to meet Heather and Amy, and talked up their band Chuck Marten and its upcoming performances. Maybe we will see a few more people at the concerts if they show up and enjoy the band live... Sharron in turn dragged me down the street to another bar, where John and Stinky showed up a bit later. Steve disappeared after the show; sorry Duff & Capello, I couldn't convey your greetings to him as well. Next week, I hope. John seemed a little sad when he arrived, but I noticed he smiled more after Sharron had a chance to sit down with him. I think he was slightly down about the upcoming leg of the tour; apparently they haven't had the best of times in Ohio and Michigan. Let's make the next few concerts memorable, people! Stinky was talking animatedly and obviously having a decent time with his fans. I had a nice talk with Shelly & Sharron until it got way too late and I needed to get home. I gave goodbye hugs to Shelly and Heather (who wandered through as I was leaving), and left for much-needed sleep. So according to Liz, Shelly blew off Friday at work? Hmmm... She sure didn't stay at OUR place. Liz, control that party girl! We want her in good shape for the Toledo show. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | "There was never a moment you | | gregdunn@indy.net | ever got within a hundred | | GregDunn@aol.com | million miles of my soul." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | Patty Griffin | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 May 97 04:01:06 UT From: "ROBERT ELLIOTT" Subject: RE: Country music ... I work at a department store and we have a Ticket master there. Well, today I asked the lady who works the ticket master thing about Lilith fair on August 3 at the Woodlands (Houston). She said she didn't know anything about it. :( She checked the computer and they didn't have anything for that date at the Woodlands. :'( I also checked the Lilith fair web site and they don't even have Houston on their dates. :( I guess it's not confirmed yet or something. Well must be going now, take care.
