And if we do manage to find that elusive Blue Llama (tm) on the Safari Trip, things will never be the same on this list! Woo-hoo! Okay, here's the itenerary at this point: 1) Some long distance folks will get to the Campbells Friday night - May 16. Watch for the Boston delegation to pull in around midnight and liven things up a bit... ;-) 2) We go to Six Flags and the Safari Adventure Saturday morning - May 17 - and hang for the day and early evening. "Team Harris" and those who have the courage to defy them! Trade paint with the sneakiest angels to ever slink around a wooded obstacle course! Hello to all, As much as a pool is a nice thing to relax by and play in under the hot summer sun, it makes me sad. The reason for this sadness is that all sorts of nice froggies and lizards also would like to come and play in it. And of course they can get in much easier than out, and chlorine is not nice to their sensitive systems, so most of the summer I sort of play lifeguard to the wildlife of my backyard, with my handy net-on-pole ready. (frogs are hardest to catch, because they are really fast swimmers and can also dive quite well). Anyway, just now I was looking out my kitchen window and saw a stick floating in the pool. Then I noticed that the stick had little twigs branching off of it, about proportionately to where my iguana's legs are. So I ran out of the house, and sure enough, it was a salamander afloat in the pool. I grabbed the net, and fished him out, convinced there was little or no hope for this little one. He (or she) really did not look that lively. But I put it on the grass, and watched it for a few minutes, and said a prayer for it, and it started moving its legs! Yay!!! But now it's not really moving that much, and I don't know if it's done for, or just resting after its ordeal. And also its eyes are kind of clouded over, and I think the pool chemicals may have damaged them. So now what do I do? Should I fill a big bowl with fresh well water, and place Mr. Sal inside? Or leave him on the grass? Or call the vet? Help! I AM friends with newbies, and I DID invite newbies into the other private room I made... just not those newbies that were harassing me in their IMs. You know, it IS possible to have friends that you met on the Jewel list, but aren't your friends just BECAUSE of Jewel. 2) I never, never, NEVER professed to be an angel. Yes, Jewel's music has had a profound affect on my life, but her music is not a religious thing for me. I don't try to model myself after the things she says in her songs. There are many instances I can think of in my life where the best thing to do was NOT to ignore conflict. If conflict was being avioded in my life, my old best friend would still be being raped by her father. My new best friend would have committed suicide. I would never be able to go to EDA gatherings because I wouldn't be able to get there without conflict. Nothing in life is easy. I choose to NOT avoid, disregard, or ignore conflict. There's nothing good about turning the other way when you see something bad happening. I know this isn't what Jewel meant in her song. Nevertheless, if you're going to try to live your life by the saying "anyone can start a conflict, it's harder yet to disregard it", I believe you'll die with a lot of regrets. I don't believe in STARTING conflict, but I DO believe in trying to counter it, or fight back, or resolve it. 3) I didn't post the names or addresses of the girls who were doing the harassing that night, because I DO want it to be over. If I posted their names, they would probably get hate mail ( I did get a couple of letters asking for thier names, and I didn't want to give them out ). It's also possible they'll get support... you never know. BUT- I hope these girls realize that when they post about their sides of the story, they expose themselves. I had just wanted the truth to be out in the open without naming names. Yes, I DO have proof that they were harassing ME. I have all the letters that started the argument, all the IMs they sent me, and a transcript of the EDA chat room before I invited my friends to leave. By these girls saying WE were the ones treating THEM unfairly, I think they are trying too hard... this can just be over, you know ? By not identifying yourselves, you can let it drop, secure in the knowledge that no one but the EDAs who were on AOL that night know who you are and the things you did. I highly suggest that.... I'm now DONE with this. Hopefully everyone else can be too. If you have a comment about this, please don't send it to the list, but to me. I have no problem with sticking you for myself indefinitely, but I'm sure others on the list are already sick of it :) Oh, and HUGE thank-yous and hugs to the people who wrote me in support and friendship ;). Karen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 1997 14:20:28 -0500 From: Chris Lewis Subject: Re: NJC: dying CDs Hey everyone - haven't posted in a long time, but here we go. As the infamous Gregg Dunn stated, one way that CD's fail is through scratching the back (painted) side of the disk. This is the aluminum, pitted side of the disk, and is easily damaged. I have seen clear plastic/polymer films that can be stuck to the back side of the disk, and actually do help quite a bit, but only of you put them on before the back of the disk gets scratched :) This doesn't prevent aluminum oxidation, or "Disk Rot", but in almost 15 years(!) of CD purchasing (600+) I have personally never seen this occur. (I'm of course going to check some of my older disks tonight to see if I've stuck my foot in my mouth!) The clear plastic side, however, can also get scratched, and is also as likely to render a disk unplayable. Most CD players can deal with small scratches, and can replace missed bits from optical degradation. However, some scratches are worse than others, and often will cause skips. DISCLAIMER: This is for trained professionals only, and should only be attempted if the disk that you are trying to fix is definitely gone. There is a nifty fix for scratches on the clear plastic side. If the scratches are small, you can attempt to polish them out with a *VERY* fine abrasive polish that is very common: Toothpaste! I've successfully revived scratched disks before using various brands of toothpaste. I'm not about to say which is best, I haven't done it that much, but I've used Crest and Crest Gel, and that clear red stuff, and have removed scratches to the point that the disk will play. I'm sure the player is still dropping bits, but the disks wouldn't play before, and play now. Just remember to only polish radially (outside to inside & back, not like rings) and try to only hit the area that you're concerned with. Use lot's of water, and remember that since the disk is broken anyway, you can't hurt it! Good luck, Chris! Christopher G. But if it gets worn off, the pits (whose dimensions are in microns > so as to be read by a laser) are easily damaged and the CD cannot be > played. As a recovering audiophile who's messed around with CDs and the first laser disks when they came out, I can tell you that pressing defects on the CD level, though not impossible to find, are rare nowadays. The pitting phenomena was well know in the early days of laser disks, and was affectionately called "Laser Rot" because the seals were not done properly and would eventually bleed air (and the moisture therein). As the aluminum surface oxidized it left pits and holes that were translucent and visible to the naked eye. If the disc is pressed correctly, it should theoretically last forever. The most recent CD I returned was an Enya CD single disk that had a crack in the center ring. If you looked at the play surface you could see the defects forming in the aluminum. The disk still played fine, but it was only going to be a matter of time and so I returned it. As far as the play surface getting "worn out", I have to say this: It ain't vinyl. If the CD surface is getting scratched that badly, you probably need either a new or a better CD player. I've seen some really really cheapo made CD players that were indeed engineered so badly and cheaply that they literally rubbed the laser optics against the disk. This is *not* a good thing. Spend the extra $50 and get a decent CD player made by a reputable company like Sony that was properly machined and engineered. I've had my Sony D-4 ever since it first came out in 1988 and it plays better and produces richer sound than most of the CD players out on the market today. It also came out before the marketing scam of "oversampling" so it also has the better chip sets for music reproduction. It amazes me at times what companies will do to justify putting in cheaper chip sets (ala 4X, 8X 16X oversampling) and yet trying to make it sound more appealing from the marketing angle. I totally forgot who emailed me about reading Mansfield Park. Anyway, to the person who did, while it isn't like yours my favorite (that will always be Pride and Predjudice for its lightheartedness) I think it is Austen's best crafted novel. The Crawford's were wonderfully portrayed (as all of them were). Unlike the other novels where we are made to feel that the potential love interests who are not the hero or heroine are fully evil, I at times really liked the Crawfords and thought that they were probably very good representations of what people thought were good at the time. And I almost wished Fanny would have accepted Henry. I think she could have reformed him. (Actually, the modern romantic comedy is so often based on just such a relationship) Especially when he showed that delicacy about her family in Portsmouth. At least his falling in love with her was much more interesting than Edmund's. And Mary's mockery of the clergy is really no different than what Austen's is in her other novels (i.e. Pride and Prejudice and Emma). And, since Austen is so often considered an anomaly for her literary time (Romantic Period--which, BTW, I disagree with--rather, I think with the discovery of the Romantic women poets and their emphasis on home and community she fits right in with female romanticism), I think this novel shows her as a romantic (at least as far as male romanticism goes). There was much emphasis on nature, tranquility, the sublime, and the evil of the city that shows the influence of Wordsworth. And in the narcissism of Edmund in choosing Fanny (who aside from being female is really no different from himself), she anticipates the later romantics such as Keats and esp. Shelley. I'd love to talk to you some more about this, but I'm leaving for two weeks to England tomorrow. So if you want to talk before then, you can email me before 12 tomorrow and I'll try and return it. Or you can email me anytime during the next two weeks and as soon as I get home I'll email you back. Hello everyone how are you? I am really good!!!!! Listen to this................................... My friend had 2 tickets to see David Letterman today so my brother took them without even blinking. We got to the city at around 10:30A.M. and went to the theater. They told us to come back at around 2:00 for our tickets to be numbered. We went to eat and came back at around 1:00. there was a line already. We stood in line until 2:00 and that is when they numbered the tickets and told us to come back at 4:00. We were numbered 29 and 30. We walked around and walked around and did more walking. At quarter to 4 we went back and people started gathering. The CBS guy told us he was going to be gathering 1-80 at the front entrance. My bro and I were like....WE IN!!! So he called 1-10 to go into line, then 1-20 and people went ....then he said 1-30 and we went into the line right away...ahead of people who were numbered before us.(It didn't matter, it didn't have to be in exact order.) This guy thought it had to be. He goes to us, WE HAVE 22 AND 23, WE SHOULD BE AHEAD OF YOU. WE LET THEM GO AHEAD. Finally at around 4:50, they start moving us in. We get into the theater(IT IS FREEZING!!!) and they direct us to this guy named Joey. He is going to seat us. Well, we were on the right side of the theater and as the people we going in, the rows were filling up. The right side was filled about 5 rows when we were next.(THE 2 people who went in front of us, filled the 5th row) Joey goes to us, GO TO THE FRONT ROW!!!!!! WE WERE SO PUMPED!!! Not only the front row, but front row~middle aisle and I had the end seat on the left side of the middle aisle. If it wasn't for those people who went ahead of uswe wouldn't have had these seats!!! IT GETS BETTER!!!!!!!! After Dave does his monalouge, he goes into commercial, and then he comes back, when he says he has a camera outside. They go to it and there is this man in the street. It turns out to be Robin Williams. Dave tells him to come inside....Robin decides to come in and he is coming down the aisle I am at. I shook his hand when he went onto the stage. He talked to Dave a little and then left and came the same way. I got another hand shake from him(WATCH IT TONIGHT....I have a hat on backwards with a grey t-shirt...you can't miss me(Front row on the end) I was loving it....I shook hands with Robin Williams and was on tv!!! YES!!!!!! Look for me if you read this before it is on tonight. Well, I am really tired....long day...........I am outta here......talk to you soon.....Mike ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 97 11:57:22 PST From: "Bethany Thompson" Subject: EDA Yearbook Can someone please send me the URL for the EDA yearbook??? thanks helen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 1997 22:00:23 -0400 (EDT) From: Dystopia@aol.com Subject: Jewel Tickets I have three tickets to Jewel on August 31 that I am selling for what I got them for.
