Helen ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Lilith-Meaning Author: "James Reach" at INTERNET Date: 5/12/97 9:44 PM From an old Encyclopedia Britanica: LILITH--a female demon of Jewish folklore; her name (meaning night monster) and personality are derrived from the Babylonian-Assyrian demon called Lilit or Lilu. In rabbinic literature Lilityh is variously depicted as the mother of Adam's demonic offspring following his separation from Eve or as his first wife, who left him because of their incompatibility. Three angels tried in vain to force her return; the evil she threatened, especially against children, was said to be counteracted by the wearing of an amulet bearing the names of the angels. A superstitious cult associated with Lilith survived among some Jews as late as the 7th century a.d. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 1997 01:21:10 -0400 (EDT) From: Words and Guitar Subject: Re: Lilith-Meaning On Tue, 13 May 1997, Bethany Thompson wrote: > Wow. There is a progressive Jewish women's magazine called Lilith, and Andrea Dworkin once wrote that she was "the first feminist." According to legend, she refused to submit sexually to Adam and so was banished, and various tales have her not being the good wife she was supposed to be. I haven't studied her myself, and there are big debates about her because she is not mentioned in the Torah (Bible), but that doesn't really mean that much, if you ask me. I'm sure Sarah picked Lilith to embody many things, especially a celebration of women in all our varied forms and personalities and eccentricities... :) Rachel "I don't wanna join yr club I don't want your kind of love" -- sleater-kinney, "a real man" my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 1997 22:42:54 -0700 From: Phenom Subject: Re: Lilith-Meaning I studied Lilith also in my Bible as Lit class and my Comparitive Religions class. Well, I'm gonna make one and only one post on this subject. Any other Electrical Engineers out there? Check me on this. About the only ways a standard manufactured (pressed as opposed to CD-R recorded) CD can fail are: 1) Physical deterioration of the aluminum coating (oxidation) due to improper coating of the substrate during manufacture and subsequent exposure to high temperature/humidity. Even though the aluminum reflection coating is highly desirable, it is not 100% required to make the CD read, and thus it can deteriorate severely before the CD fails to work. 2) Mechanical damage (scraping off) of the aluminum coating through careless handling. This will also damage the pits which are the actual encoded data, and is pretty much fatal. Contrary to what you might expect, the aluminum coating is on the LABEL side of the disc, not the underside. There is only a thin sealing coat of plastic on top of the aluminum, then the silkscreened artwork of the label. A CD can be damaged very easily by scratching the top of the disc. The bottom, on the other hand, has a thick plastic layer and can withstand severe damage without compromising the CD's playability. I can't imagine the laser itself damaging the aluminum or pits; what probably has happened is that the continued ambient heat and thermal cycling imposed on the CD through continuous play, has oxidized the aluminum or allowed moisture to creep under the coating. A properly manufactured CD (or a gold-plated one like the Mobile Fidelity discs) should be rather immune to this effect. I have had poorly made CDs actually shed the aluminum, and they were rapidly rendered unplayable. Generally when the coating flakes off, the pits are ruined. - -- | Greg Dunn | I shut out acceptance so I won't | | gregdunn@indy.net | get hurt; and move on to the next| | GregDunn@aol.com | one who will treat me like dirt. | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Patti Rothberg | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 1997 02:21:51 EDT From: sparksmark@juno.com (Sparks the Everyday Angel) Subject: NJC So Cal EDA gathering Is there going to be a SoCal EDA gathering? True, Jewel won't be singing anywhere in the area this weekend, but after all the controversy over her last appearance in New York (at SNL), maybe we lucked out and can just concentrate on pure fun now! =) If you've missed past great gatherings like JewelStock, Hampton Beach, LizStock, Hot Dog Fest and the EDA Cafe concert with Berryhill and Hummel, you OWE it to yourself to make this one! And I really don't think it'd be considerate of you to ask Heidi for ownership of Tonka. (I'm sorry) And even though Lillie and Murphy are really sad now, they WILL get over it. In fact, I had left for a 5 day vacation and my cat had forgotten who I was! If they aren't close, then I say go for it. You should try to keep Lillie, Murphy, and Tonka together if it's okay with Heidi. You also made another good point about how Heidi could easily adopt another cat in Bermuda. You aren't the worst person in the world right now. And we're here today with Hillary Shavie, Reno's own Jewel, who is here to increase awareness for organ donations." I thought it was weird that the DJ compared the skater to Jewel, but as we know, organ donation is a very Jewelesque cause, so perhaps the comparison was justified. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 1997 04:15:57 EDT From: banana_cracker@juno.com (mike g fulcher) Subject: Rodney Crowell of Pop Music:JEWEL I started out thinking of how Jewel would NOT fit into country music because she is so close to Rosanne Cash[Interiors] and Rodney Crowell[Life Is Messy] in their explorations into psychology themes. Rosanne has left music to write by the way and Rodney her former spouse is more into maintaining music in his vein which was bred with Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris who easily are folk musicians. Vince Gill is also a contemporary. If you don't understand what I have said so far you might look further inside my thoughts as I compare Jewel once again to the female pilot[Finch] who is tracing amelia earhart's trek around the world in an identical plane of that era. Then I will compare the flight of Jewel along with the EDAs who have come so far for so long. You guys have been flying all along only you didn't realize that you needed the plane to get around the music world...look how much you have accomplished. Most mailing lists have only done one or two of ALL you have done. Jewel Has written 200 songs...and has the forum to deliver each message...you guys and gals need a rest also. I have held a Jewel CD in one hand and another I wanted just as much for the past six months and realized that Jewel's CDs would always be around . Besides my niece has both my cassette and CD now and the realaudio to cassette "bad" recordings. You have been Jewel's support and when you hurt she does unless ...you lose the feeling. If she monitors this list you should be sending her the very best vibes...and tell her how you are going to spend your summer vacation...I don't have one but already I have been to San Antonio Nights which is modeled after Austin City Limits and is featuring local artists on the PBS station.Although a pilot version five shows will be taped and presented to sponsors for funding. I saw COYOTE DREAMS last week and taping is Wednesday for a troubador named Eric Taylor who sounds pretty good on the radio. If Jewel EVER comes to the Alamo City she would be featured on a noonish TV show called LIVING on a station which "curiously" has adopted a slogan recently "News 4 _Everyday_ Living"...and I have been sending them the news digest via e-mail. Hey people! Just wondering if any fellow EDAs out there were also any Indigo Girls fans. They have been such an inspiration to me, personally. (Well, them, Melissa Etheridge, and Janis Joplin, and Melanie of course.) Anyways, enough rambling. Would like to hear from any other IG fans. They just put out a new CD, "Shaming of the Sun." Pretty darn groovy, IMO. Try their new web site out. It's great. Has tour dates, yadayada. http://www.indigogirls.com catchy URL name, huh? Original too. hee Anyways, their going to be at Lilith Fair in Deer Creek...in Noblesville,IN (outside of INDY). Anyways, please don't flame me for writing so much about my girls. (I did, in fact, put the little "NJC" thingy before my post.) Toodaloo! Peace, Jessica P.S. Geez, I said "anyway" enough, dontcha think? The following is taken from the alt.music.alternative.female newsgroup. Does anybody know anything about this? It would seem a little odd for Jewel to persue an animated series at this time, but who am I to say? Therefore, we really should just forget about it and let >things be as they are. But we're not the casual music fan that your friend is. We are the fans who notice the forgotten lyrics and different style. So, why should we forget about it? I don't think anyone is saying "Oh, Jewel, you were horrible, don't ever do that again," I think we're saying "We don't think that worked so well," with the best of intentions. >As much as we often don't like to admit it, >artists are human, and as is typical of us humans, make mistakes. We ARE pointing out the mistakes, and you (and others) are flinching because of it. I'm not saying we're right or you're right, because this is a matter of opinion. I am a person who wants his mistakes pointed out, so that I can learn from them. >The difference is, when we slip up, we don't have a >mailing list of a thousand plus dissecting our error for days on end. >Instead, We 0pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, forget about what >happaned and move on. Undoubtedly, Jewel will do the same. I have confidence that she will, too. So, why is it a problem that we discuss it? Do you suspect that Jewel will somehow be hurt by our discussion? Your last statement says no, so where is the problem? > Without a doubt, we will >soon be treated to many more amazing performances by Jewel, and SNL will >be just a minor footnote in a long, illustrious and accomplished career. Hear, hear! On this note, I definitely agree. Hope you will take this in the way it was intended, as a polite, intelligent (I hope!) conversation. But tonight, taking the advice of my producer, the Ravel was replace by the Gibb's Stayin' Alive and the trout by a cow hock. While the crowd was generally supportive in this, I was tentative and the die-hard "choppies" were incensed and showed their disapproval by refusing to toss flaming matches at me during the performance. Afterward, as I rushed to the rear exit so as not to be mobbed, a young fan shouted "I love you, man, you were great". Simultaneously another yelled, "You really screwed up". Morons. Yes indeed, this is blatantly Non-JC, but I need help! People who aren't juno users may wish to delete now. I have 2 big questions about Juno. #1: How come when I check for new messages, it will say I have, for example 37 new messages, but then when I start reading them, I only have, say, 14 messages in my inbox to read? Am I losing messages, or just my marbles? This happens pretty much everytime I go to read my mail. #2: Ok, so I'm doing this on my dad's computer. I was using his email addy and account to do my mail and to be on this list. Then some helpful soul told me how I could set up my very own account on this self-same computer. Which I did, and it worked just splendidly. Which would now be the account I am using. But there is also a *huge* problem with this. Now, when you click on the icon that lets you into Juno, only *my* account comes up and prompts for password. My dad's account seems to have vanished. This is not good, and I really would like to have this figured out by this evening, so he doesn' go to check his e-mail and flip out. Plus, that addy is still subscribed to this list, and I obviously need to unsubscribe that addy now that I have this one. Is there any way that we can access both acounts from this computer? If one account comes up, how do we get the other to come up if we desire to access it? I apologize for the NJC, but if someone would be so kind as to reply sometime this afternoon so I oculd remedy this situation before daddy darling gets home, I'd be ever so greatful! hugs to all, Becca ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #356 ***************************
