I taped it because I was at the Black and White Ball last night. So anyway, I didn't think it was that bad of a show. I personally like the NPR skit. I could do without the vomit routine on Weekend Update. And about Jewel flubbing the line. Big whoppty doowads. I have done that so many times (but I have never sung on live TV). You just get caught up in the moment and your neurons just don't fire so you scat a little. Oh and that Sax got on my nerves. She also looked a little out of sorts, probably because this just wasn't her element. I think she enjoys it more when she doesn't have a time constraint and she can tell us stories. Of course that has been my observation at the shows I've attended. It was bad! I've been a big fan of SNL since I saw it for the first time. The show has gone way downhill since the departure of Mike Myers, Dennis Miller, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Farley, and Phil Hartman. Lately, I've been enjoying the new episodes. This last one made me remember how bad the show really is. Normally weekend update is my favorite part of the show but this time they crossed the line. I did like the Janet Reno joke though! Next, about Jewel. Her performance was okay. She messed up on a line, big deal! Everyone makes mistakes. I think the rest of the performance was good. It did seem like she was going to cry during the second song though. As far as her makeup goes, I thought it was fine. I would have liked to see less but I don't think she had too much on. Her outfit was reat as usual. Someone mentioned something about her losing weight. By the looks of it she may have dropped a few pounds but not too much. She is as angelic as ever. Well, that about does it for my opinion. I had to add mine to the list. I must end this now because I have to get to sleep. Its finals week here at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I think that if anyone were to receive that kind of mail (an album from fans, cheering and telling her how much she means to them), it would help them along and give them an extra boost of energy. It would be a rush and help releive the stress. Why couldn't we give that kind of surprise and pleasure to the woman (Jewel) who does it for us all the time. I know that personally, no matter how stressed I am or how bad a day I've had, all that I've got to do is turn on POY (it's usually in the cd player anyway) and it cheers me up; it relaxes me; it helps make me feel better. So why not do the same for Jewel. I'm sure the EDA tape of cover songs did it as well but the longer she stays on tour the more stress she'll get, especially this early in her career. So I say yeah, the album with the letters is a damn good idea. I walked in the room and there was a video on with a woman singing in a bathroom stall. I turned the vollume up(as soon as I found the remote) and caught the last little bit. I tuned in again eight hours later (because Much repeats itself three times a day--pretty much). I loved the sound, the rhythm, the words, absolutely everything. The next time I was at A&B Sound I looked for it. It was sort of magnetic as it held me in a way that I hadn't really felt in a long while. I finally got the cd and I haven't looked back since. His response was "well the show was OK, but I thought that Jewel was great and she looked absolutely beautiful". I asked him if he had noticed any mistakes and he honestly did not. Furthermore, he liked the jazzy arrangement of WWSYS. In fact, he bought POY that very same day based on the performance. The point that I am trying to make is that to the casual music fan, the forgotten lyric and the new arrangement were not that big a deal as it is to us EDA's. Therefore, we really should just forget about it and let things be as they are. As much as we often don't like to admit it, artists are human, and as is typical of us humans, make mistakes. Who among us has not slipped up in public. I think it is safe to assume that the answer is nobody. The difference is, when we slip up, we don't have a mailing list of a thousand plus dissecting our error for days on end. Instead, We 0pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, forget about what happaned and move on. Undoubtedly, Jewel will do the same. Without a doubt, we will soon be treated to many more amazing performances by Jewel, and SNL will be just a minor footnote in a long, illustrious and accomplished career. Does her view take precedence over the venue's policy? The reason I ask is that I am going to the Mean Fiddler gig on Wednesday and I'd quite like to record it but not if it means being thrown out. I hope you can help. I really enjoyed it ... So she screwed up a couple of lines ... Big deal ... It's funny to me how people on the list are criticizing Jewel, yet they themselves leave out words in their sentences or misspell words ... While I wasn't exactly crazy about the sax, it was a different twist ... Both songs were great, so put me in the positive review column .. I, for one, am very relieved she wasn't in a skit. All of the skits sucked in my opinion and if it wasn't for Jewel, I wouldn't have even been watching SNL. IMO, SNL hasn't been worth watching for a while now and the poor quality of the skits Saturday only confirmed it yet again for me. :( Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 1997 15:54:41 -0400 (EDT) From: Harrisbros@aol.com Subject: NJC: Don't skit, just scat! ***Josh wrote of Jewel's SNL appearance: <> I think SNL would no longer recognize a funny skit if it came up and bit them on the butt. MAD TV can hire good writers, why can't SNL? So, lame material produces lame performances. It's probably best that Jewel didn't agree to do a skit that would most likely bomb anyway. And Jewel can drag out "skits" a little longer than they should be without SNL's help! Remember the rambling windshield wiper story at JewelStock night 2? "That's deep, Jewel!" * sheesh * Odds are that they would have stuck her in some lame Swiss Miss skit and force d her to yodel nekked on a bear rug... heeeeyyyy, maybe she SHOULD do a skit next time! =) Just an opinion from someone who used to enjoy SNL back when it was funny (and it isn't easy remembering back THAT FAR, believe me!)... - -- Dennis (Bass-o-Matic was FUNNY) Harris ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 1997 16:14:46 EDT From: omniventuresinc@juno.com Subject: NJC: Jewel in SNL skit Hi all! Yep, I'm back! My dad is actually letting me use his juno account to be on the list! YAY!!! And I'm getting to go to Six Flags this weekend to meet fellow EDAs! Woo-hoo! Anyway, here's my two cents about Jewel being in a skit on SNL. I was actually hoping that she would be in one. While most people would agree that the show really isn't nearly as great as it once was, I think it's cool when I see either the host or the musical guest in a skit. I think it shows a lot of guts, especially in the skits where they embrace and make fun of their own weaknesses and imperfections. It's like they're saying, yeah, we know that as celebrities we have these traits that annoy people, but that's who I am. This is why I can kind of see why Jewel wouldn't want to be in a skit. Also, they wouldn't have much to make fun of her about. I thought maybe they would do a skit of her performing and getting obscene comments from the crowd, then going medeival on someone. That's sort of what I envisioned if she *had* been in a skit. I know *I* would have applauded it. But hey, so what if she didn't do a skit. She may be shy when in extremely bright spotlights, but we all know how great she can be, from personal experiences at JewelStock or other laid-back settings (or listening to tapes and others' experiences of such). We know that she is not only talented, but chock full of personality and wonder, and isn't that what matters most? hugs, Becca :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 1997 15:20:42 -0500 From: jdfree@students.wisc.edu (Joshua Free) Subject: Re: What are you talking about??? I don't want to start an argument but she didn't cover it up that well. My roommate was doing something else but when he heard the line she messed up he stopped what I was doing and made me rewind the tape so he could hear what happened. He never listens to Jewel so it wasn't like he knew what was supposed to be said. I don't care that she messed up. I feel bad for her but everyone makes mstakes. I had heard WWSYS and of course I loved it, but didn't go out and get the cd. About a year ago, I was at my now ex-boyfriends house and he put in the cd and it played OVER and OVER while we were doing whatever it was we were doing....=) ANYWAYS, we broke up like a week later and listening to Jewel just brought up all those bad feelings of him. But, then I heard YWMFM and I fell in love with her and the music and HAD to put my bad experience behind me! I'm so happy now that I did! Because if not, I'd never have gotten involved with you all!! I thought "With a name like that she's gotta suck." but then I heard the song..and went Oh Yeah..I love this song more than anything in the world :) So I spent the next couple months thinking about it. THEN I heard YWMFM and kept waiting for the chorus(cause it was on real quiet and I thought it was WWSYS)..and after I figured out about that song I just loved Jewel..
