This is constructive criticism remember, but here's where it meant wrong. 1)First of all, why does she keep insisting on wearing so much goddamn make-up? She actually looks BETTER without it. It wasnt too bad at the VH1 special but Letterman and the SNL I just watched were pretty bad, I mean tonite it just seemed caked on. 2)I agree with Tammy who spoke of the same thing in regards to the Unplugged show-The sax has got to go. Not that he can't play, but it just seems not like Jewel-music with a long sax solo in the middle of Who Will Save Your Soul 3)She totally forgot like a third of the song, and didn't cover it up well. I mean, this isnt exactly one she doesnt usually play that she might forget the words to, but I do admit that it might have been because this is probly only the 3rd or 4th time performing it live in this arrangement 4)The arrangement of WWSYS is the worst of the many Ive heard. The solo acoustic is better, so is the album, so is the Summer 96 version with the long band intro and scat ending, so is the late 96/97 version with the speeded up final verse. Ick. Even if she sang it perfectly I wouldnt have liked it, and only one long Soooouuul at the end instead of the usual one long one followed by one really long one 5)You Were Meant For Me was actually halfway decent, I would have rather have seen her play this and FGames but I dont know how much choice she had in that matter So, that's it, hope it doesn't sound too harsh, I still love Jewel's music as much as anyone, just was displeased and disappointed with the SNL performance in general. I'm sure is upset too, forgetting many words lines and misplacing verses has to get to her, hopefully Steve was there backstage to console her. It is basically the only time I've ever seen Jewel not seem relaxed or at ease at a big TV gig. Maybe because it was truly LIVE unlike Unplugged, VH1 things, Letterman, Leno, CRose, Hutton, etc etc. It was like nothing she has done before, a very pressurized live two song gig, not like her live shows at all-Live took on a new meaning tonight that she had never experienced before and she wasnt up to the task, she choked, let's be honest. Like I said, dont go flame crazy cause of statements like that, it's constructive criticism, there isnt enough of it on this list. I still love, absolutely love, Jewel's music. Actually, I just bought my Jones Beach tix this morning(for 27.50 a ticket) and am looking forward to it but have mediocre seats, hopefully I'll be able to trade or buy up. Oh, and you never know, good things may come out of tonite. A performance of such average and unremarkable nature with a major mess-up might deter popularity. Yay!! Well, that's all. Jewel looked fantastic, better than i have ever seen in fact. she had this sort of Futuristic chick thing going on (i think it was the eye liner) But if you will notice by the second song her make up has pretty much worn off and the blue eye shadow is faded... the shirt was very flattering, while still see through (you will notice this at the end of the show) the shoes were classic, high heeled black sandals (does she EVER wear sneakers???) I was hoping she would have done a skit (a la Aerosmith) but i doubted it since its very rare that a musical guest gets to do a skit and that since in the skits the artist usually has to mock themselves and Jewel is not the kind of person to do that on TV (i wish she had though)... At the end of the show when they all stand around together and say good bye jewel looked very uncomfortable... She ws kinda standing there with her shoulders slumped, and with the heels she looked a good 3 inches taller than several cast members (is this why she doesnt wear sneakers?) anyways, a good show, a great band, wouldnt mind seeing them on tour with her... Lovies, peace and all that. With all the moving that goes on with CD's, they get scratched. It is inevitable. I have also seen CD's that have had the foil corroded away into nothing-ness. A wierd phenomenon that I have yet to have anyone explain to me why it happens. I've taken these CD's to stores and they look at them with confusion and horror, because they have never seen anything like it. But it can happen. Also, I think that the projected lifespan of a CD when they were first coming out 15 years ago or so was in the range of 10-15 years. I think that number is now a little low, but they may have been taking into account the non-ideal conditions that CD's typically have to go through... With our mouse we roam, through the rooms in a maze, Looking for something or someone, as we sit in a daze. We chat with each other, we type all out woes, Small groups we do form, and gang up on our foes. We wait for somebody, to type out our name, We want recognition, but it is always the same. We give kisses and hugs, and sometimes flirt, In IMs we chat deeply, and reveal why we hurt. We do form friendships - but - why we don't know, But some of these friendships, will flourish and grow. Why is it on screen, we can be so bold, Telling our secrets, that have never been told. Why is it we share, the thoughts in our mind, With those we can't see, as though we were blind. The answer is simple, it is as clear as a bell. We all have our problems, and need someone to tell.. We can't tell real people, but tell someone we must, So we turn to the puter, and to those we can trust. The only bright spot in my opinion was Jewel's performance. > The show just isn't funny anymore and I felt sorry that Jewel had to follow > the gay vomit joke. I love our little angel, but she just wasn't herself on SNL tonight. I hate to say it but she almost seemed high. She looked it anyways. The first thing I notice was her makeup. She's naturally beautiful. With all that makeup on, she looked more like Tammy Faye Baker. It was caked on and almost orange, greasy makeup. And she didn't cover her mistake very well in WWSYS either. But hey, can't win them all. She's not perfect, but human like all of us. She's still wonderful. I just hope fame/Hollywood doesn't go to her head. I think she needs to stick with the acoustics and leave the sax and jazzy stuff out. I still love her, though. Everybody, please don't flame me. Everyone has the right to their opinion. She's still wonderful. I've just seen her do better. I'm not trying to cut her down or anything. Would never do that! I liked the changes to the songs (well, from the versions I've heard anyway). I also noticed where she missed the line and feel that she didn't cover it up enough to make it unnoticable. But hey it was short and quick. No one's perfect, we all make mistakes. It's lifes little mistakes that make each day an adventure. One last thing, I also have to say 'what the heck was up with that sax.' It really did seem like a different song. It was, I don't know, maybe a little too jazzy or something. But in all, it was a beautiful performance. I don't watch SNL but I taped it so that I could see the woman that brings us all together. Don't worry, you can download her WMSYS and YWMFM SNL RealAudio files from my site. Act soon. I don't know how long I'll have them up. As for her performance, I thought it wasn't all that great. The saxophone and steel guitar detracted from her voice and guitar. She also seemed to falter on the lyrics a bit and went into a bit of scat. Also, what's with SNL and makeup? When No Doubt was on, Gwen Steffani looked like the makeup queen, and Jewel also seemed to have WAY too much make up on. Overall, Jewel's performance on the Nick. Awards was by far better. - ------------------ Frank Clark Simply Jewel: http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~fclark/jewel.html ICQ UIN: 169036 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 May 1997 05:32:43 -0400 (EDT) From: SappyD7@aol.com Subject: NJC? Too much make-up, in my opinion. Thought it was funny how she totally goofed the lyrics, then had to catch herself. I was so embarrassed for her! But the band played on, and they seemed to cover it okay. I think Rob posted about the MTV Unplugged show, and how the saxaphone didn't really fit in. I totally agree with that. It seemed forced. However, it was kinda cool to hear the opening, remember Rob's post, and say "I think it's WWSYS." Her performance of YWMFM was rather lackluster, IMO. However, toward the end, she looked like she got really mad about something, and all of a sudden there was some emotion and feeling behind the singing. Finally, at the end, when everyone says goodnight, it was cute to see her just kind of standing there, waving goodbye, being her (I suspect) usual shy self. Overall, I'm not sure it was worth struggling through an hour and a half of lame comedy. On another note, I got my tickets for the Starwood Amphitheatre Lilithfair show in Nashville on Aug. 6. I got to the ticket office right around 10, and there were maybe 6 people in line. 6!! Not only that, but I had the opportunity to buy second row tickets (the people right before me did), only the friends with whom I'm going wanted to sit on the lawn. That really sucked, but I didn't want to forsake them. I almost thought about paying the difference for them, but that was 8 people @ 23 buck a pop additional. The lawn tickets themselves were $27 after Ticektmaster charges. And another thing (remember when Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say that on the REALLY old SNL?), seeing as I went to the box office to buy the tickets, why was there a Ticketmaster charge? I asked the girl at the office, but she just kind of shrugged her shoulders at me. Thanks, that was really helpful. So if anyone else is going to be on the lawn at the Starwood show, let me know. We can get a huge area at the front of the lawn over which to spread our blankets and such. APPEARANCE - ----------------------- I really liked Jewel's outfit. She had a see-through black shirt on with navy blue pants. And I absolutely loved her shoes. I didn't like the make-up though. They sure did cake it on her face for the cameras. I also didn't like all the eye make-up. They put way too much eye liner on her. It wasn't our naturally beautiful Jewel. PERFOMANCES - ------------------------- 1) Who Will Save Your Soul This performance was the worst I've ever seen of Jewel's. It wasn't all her fault though. I hated the band. I especially hated the saxophonist who thought he needed all the attention. Jewel slipped up on the words and obviously looked disappointed. But instead of making a big deal of it, she went straight to the chorus. Everyone makes mistakes though, and I felt bad for her. 2) You Were Meant For Me This performance was great. I still didn't like the band that much, but the song was beautiful as always. She really put some feeling in it. Well that's just my $0.02. I hope I didn't offend anybody, this is just my opinion. ~Jennifer :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 May 1997 09:06:25 -0400 From: "The Bowman Family" Subject: Jewel on SNL After reading a couple of your thoughts about Jewel on SNL, I'd like to give mine.
