Funny you should mention that, Pete. i too have fears about this whole Foolish games remix thing. Are they going to make it faster? What are they going to have to do to make it fit on the Batman soundtrack? As i pondered these two questions i had a suddent flashback to the Grammys where Toni Braxton performed her smash hit VERY SLOW BALLAD, Unbreak My Heart, to a strange sort of dance beat. Her band which she put together last night was awesome. I still can't believe it. I was so close to meeting her but then the MTV people starting clearing everyone out. It is 1:30am and we planned to be back by 11:30pm. I thought Jewel might be restrained to follow MTV's taping time limits -- but no! We were FORCED to listen to a 3 hour set. A quick recap, and then I'll give more details in future post. First of all, the theater was very empty by the time it came to tape Jewel's portion -- well under 300 people were left. By the end of the show there was closer to 100 than 150 people left (it was JewelStock all over!) I'll give the reasons later. Jewel stuck around and hung with the crowd after the show, but we having already been blessed with twice meeting her before, decided to slide out and give other angels their chance. Tammy gave Lenedra the EDA Cover tape before the show, so hopefully Jewel will have it in her hands shortly :-) Set List: (Stranger) Enters from the East Boy needs a bike Satellite -- played slower than normal ::::enter band:::: YWMFM -- closer to the second recording of this song than the album or single version Down (so long) Foolish Games -- single tempo WWSYS -- with a cool "Summertimeish" sort of entrance and a jazzy interlude Last Dance Rodeo -- brand new, only a few days old Under the water -- from the Craft Retake of Foolish Games Retake of YWMFM Retake of Last Dance Rodeo ::::exit band:::: Fragile Flame Passing Time Don't Too Darn Hot -- a Cole Porter tune Angel Standing By Of course there is much to write about concerning the whole night -- but that will be forth coming shortly. I said something like if Jewel was first look for Tammy and I to leave early. If we did we would have missed a great act. His performance was in many ways better than Jewel's (more on that later). But my main change of heart resulted from the crowd who was mostly there for him, and I had to hear his fans say how they had no interest in seeing Jewel. I then realized what a stupid thing that is to say, because for all you know Jewel's biggest fan is standing next to you. So again, I'm sorry for any Maxwell fans out there. Maxwell was great and a majority of crowd was very much into his music. As far as a performance goes, he was better than Jewel. He worked the crowd better and his set was more like a performance, whereas Jewel's was clips and snip-its -- not than I am complaining. One strong piece of advice for MTV -- get an APPLAUSE sign. Not knowing the songs I "woohoo'ed" at an inappropriate silent part of one of Maxwell's songs. I am now like to refer to myself as "woohoo-impaired" and would thank you kindly not to make of it! :-) As I mentioned, Tammy gave Lenedra the EDA cover tape, and Lenedra was sitting front row right side for the performance. She was flanked on both sides by some handsome young men, does anyone know if these were Jewel's brothers? After the intermission, MTV provided food and drink!!! We returned to an empty theater. Easily less than 300 people left and MTV struggled to fill the empty seats (In other words... as I mentioned in my "pre-show" post had you been there you would have gotten in.) Since the crowd was so small I expect during the airing the crowd shots you will see will actually be ones they taped of us before the Maxwell show (ah, the power of television). Question -- Where the hell is Big Blue anymore? Fashion report: Jewel was dressed down wearing dark brown pants with a lace up fly, and a faded black tank top, with a turquoise neck choker. Jewel's band consisted of a table steel guitar, another guitarist (playing lap steel guitar, guitar and mandolin), sax (Joshua Redman), piano (John Ginty), cello (John Higgins), drums, and stand-up bass (Greg Kohn). Now Joshua is a big name in the sax world, and it was obvious during the first few minutes with the band that they were trying to press his presence, even when the song did not call for it. She opened solo with (Stranger) Enters From the East, which she just called "Enters from the East." She then went on to "Boy Needs a Bike," calling it another new tune -- but we know the truth Jewel :-) A quick of many touch-up's of her make-up in which she uncomfortably allowed her make-up artist work on her. And she asks what would you rather hear "Satellite" or "Don't". Tammy and I, without thought, instantly scream "SATELLITE" and she lays into it. This version was slowed down a bit and I enjoyed it. It's now 11:00pm, 30 minutes after the scheduled end of the show. The band takes the stage. She gives a short story about how this next song was written in Mexico on a surfing trip and how she never thought it would make her so much money, including saying she thinks it is buying Steve a house. YWMFM was nice with the band, the mandolin was awesome for it. But the sax seemed over worked into song (IMHO). She then did Down (so long). Then she put down her guitar and the sax led for Foolish Games. It was harsh (again, IMHO), and I didn't think the sax worked as well as the normal piano entrance. She said to play the song in "single tempo" and opposed to album tempo -- truth be told I couldn't tell a difference. Of course, she began the song by asking people to call up radio stations and request it. (Our little Jewel, still feeling the need to push her material -- it's cute; radio stations should be begging for whatever she wants to release.) Then she fooled Tammy and I by saying how she loves doing this next song, and it started with a bass and sax intro that sounded a lot like the beginning of Summertime. And then suddenly she rips into WWSYS. There was a nice jazzy interlude and the sax really did fit this version of the song. BTW, Don Was was directing Jewel during show and giving her advice during the performance, and he seemed to be very much involved in the whole process. Alan, is this going to be a continuing collaboration? Jewel said she wrote this stupid song at Don's house and threw it away -- but Don asked her to perform it. It was a nice tune called, "Last Dance Rodeo." The hook of the lyrics are, "You're no longer human. You're an insatiable 'ho (or hole). You want to bury your face in the navel of her soul. All we need is a heart to call a home." It started as a solo, then had a sax interlude and ended with the band. For some reason I felt it kind of Tori-ish, but in a Jewel sort of way. That's just my impression though. She stated that her picks were slimly and asked someone if they had any Dunlap picks -- note to the pick people :-) She then sat down to write lyrics for almost ten minutes and literally half the crowd left. (All the more Jewel for me I say!) She then did a laid out, knock down of Under the Water from the Craft with the band. It was awesome! Then Don said that he was having her retake Foolish Games, YWMFM and Last Dance Rodeo. Not so surprising to me they did not have the sax intro or perform on Foolish Games or YWMFM -- appears I was not the only one who didn't care for it. After Last Dance Rodeo retake it was about 12:15am. Don says Jewel would like to do some more songs if it is ok with the crew and the audience. We all scream our approval (hard to make a lot of noise for 100 people though). She does solo, Fragile Flame, Passing Time, Don't, Too Darn Hot, and concludes with Angel Standing By. A very sweet reward for those who stayed. Jewel was in a good mood and laughing, jiggling, etc. as normal. Honestly, it is as close to JewelStock as we may ever get again. Well, that's my take on it in under 1200 words. Hope you enjoyed me walking you through the entire evening. --- Rob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 May 1997 10:52:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Joelies@aol.com Subject: Re: NJC: U2 Concert Thanks for the U2 review! Jon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 May 1997 14:13:49 -0400 (EDT) From: Tlcathome@aol.com Subject: Unplugged - - My thoughts :-) By now most of you have probably read Rob's posts about last nights Unplugged taping :-) Now, it's my turn :-) I may repeat some of what he says, but I'll try to keep it short :-) BTW, there was no check for recorders or anything - jackets had to be checked at the door (left) so we could have taken a recorder in my purse - Darn it all!!! :-) First off, things were running way behind, so we stood outside until well past when they said they'd be locking the doors (good thing we showed up early ;-) It was pretty obvious, even as we waited outside, that the majority of the crowd was mainly there for Maxwell (funny, because before this I didn't even know who he was). It was obvious soon into his show why he was so popular. In a way, he's like a soulful, male version of Jewel - - I mean this in that he has his own spiritual quality, not that they are saying the same thing (does this make ANY sense at all - I think I need a nap....) IMHO, he reminded me of a cross between Terrence Trent D'arby and Prince (formerly known as...). Well, that's how I saw it anyway. I must add, as Rob did, he really knew how to work the crowd. Anyway, it was a good show and I'm glad we got to see his show too :-) So, after Maxwell's set, the auditorim was cleared as they changed the set (Rob and I both agreed that we preferred the set they used for Maxwell over Jewel's - oh well :-) After grabbing a quick sprite and beer, we headed back in and returned to our seats to await Jewel's performance. Man was the crowd smaller.... they moved ppl around a little - seating a few ppl behind the set also... Finally, Jewel was announced :-) YAY!!! She opened with Enter From the East, which was wonderful :-) Then did Boy Needs a Bike, after saying it was new - huh?? ;-) Here she complains about the prop mic set up by her guitar - - it's in her way and she feels she can't move....(this was removed after 1 or 2 more songs) Then she asks the crowd, "would you rather hear Don't or Sattelite?" Rob and I immediately yell out satellite!! in unison :-) I heard a few other Satellites in there also, but I think we were definitely the loudest. Jewel makes a kinda surprised face and if I remember correctly, commented on us knowing what we want - then a few ppl yell out "Don't" to which Jewel replies that it's too late and the ballots are closed and something about believing in Democracy :-) She also comments on how she wrote the song about Hollywood and is not allowed to perform it there anymore, but too bad, she says, Now it's gonna be on Unplugged - (hehe) - (I yelled out "Go, Jewel here, but I'm sure they'll edit it out ;-) Yay!!! She does a wonderful version of Satellite :-) At this point, Jewel asks that her band come out and tells us how great they are and how they had just met the night before at like 11:00 and that they learned like 14 new songs in 3 hours :-) Also, Don Was was very involved in the entire process (I lean to Rob and say, didn't he used to have a band - "yes" - wasn't it called "was, not was?" - "yes" - wow, can't believe I remembered that :-) OK, then she did YWMFM, and then Down So Long (Yes!!!! we hadn't heard this yet - No wonder those of you who've heard it have commented on it so much - It rocked!!! the band was awesome with this, not that I have anything to compare it to....she also did say she thinks this will be on the new cd) next were Foolish Games, WWSYS, and then a new song called Last Dance Rodeo, which was also a great song!! Hope it makes the album!!! Then she sits down and starts writing lyrics- - - we sit there wondering what she's gonna do now :-) When she comes back to the mic, she says don't expect much - To my surprise and delight, the next song was Under the Water from The Craft soundtrack - WooHoo!!!! It was stupendous!! (I'm getting tired of saying 'awesome' ;-) Here, Don has her re-do Foolish Games, YWMFM, and Last Dance Rodeo.... Now, without the band Don asks if Jewel can do a few more songs - yeah, like we'd say "no" to jewel :-) She ends up doing 5 more songs - - they were Fragile Flame, Passing Time (another new one - liked it :-), now she does Don't, Then as she's waiting for her Capo (sp?), she has the audience snap their fingers as she does Cole Porter's Too Darn Hot - - WOW!!! - - - Then finishes with Angel Standing By!! As soon as she's done and it's obvious that it is indeed over, Rob and I head for the door - It's already much later than it was scheduled and there was no phone in the venue to call our sitter :-o. Whew!! What a night :-) Wouldn't have missed it for the world :-) Hope this wasn't too long :-) BTW, our set lists are in the order performed, so it'll be interesting to see how it comes out on the aired version :-) Talk to ya later :-) ONLY 8 MORE DAYS TO THE EDADVENTURE AT SIX FLAGS :-) Tammy :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 May 1997 14:55:37 -0400 From: Paladin Subject: Jewel Help Dear Fellow Jewel Lover, Hello, My name is John I have just recently joined this newsletter and I was wondering if someone could fill me in on some stuff (like the unplugged deal, and this song dedication). I just turned on the tv, and as I switched the channel, I catched the beginning of the Sean Penn version of YWMFM for the first time!!! I thought it was a bit different (you know, the lyrics), but I did like it. The moral of the story is that it is a good thing to get sick at school and to come home early:) Alfred Please visit: http://personal.netwrx.net/trujillo/Jewel.htm Please visit: http://personal.netwrx.net/trujillo/ - ----------------------------------------------------------------- I get a tiny little boost of adrenaline when I think about all I've been given - --- Jewel "My Own Private God's gift To Women" - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see. A friend of mine who works at a Blockbuster snagged the tape for me, but she hasn't sent it yet. Anyway, about 45 minutes into the tape (which recorded for six hours), it came along as part of Crossroads. I was so excited, I watched it about 4 times, then went through it in slo-mo to catch some things that blurred past in regular speed. Useless sidebar: The video that was on prior to this one was the new song by Collective Soul. And guess who directed that video? That's right, Lawrence Carroll (I think), who directed the other YWMFM video. Coincidence? I think not. Anyway, I thought this video was much better than the newer one. It basically showed Jewel at a movie theater where they played some B&W romantic movies from the 30's-50's, where someone sees their lover with someone else. There are a couple of great shots of Jewel with her face lit up in a shade of blue, making her appear even more like an angel, if that's possible. The closing shot of the video is, IMHO, the best shot of Jewel I've ever seen. The video also showed scenes of Jewel decorating an apartment, presumably after moving away from her lover in the song. In one of these scenes, she dances around the kitchen in this funky way that's really cute. If anyone wants a copy of the video, you can let me know privately, and we can work out details. I have some other stuff off cable that I can put on a videotape, too. Regards, Bill Yeh Fellow EDA p.s. to anyone who has seen this video, does her face look kinda chubby in some of the scenes, especially the brown ones? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 May 1997 16:07:29 -0400 From: Paladin Subject: Re: MTV Unplugged Hello, I was just wondering if someone could tell me of a way that I could get back stage passes to one of Jewel's concerts.
