For me personally I cannot stand a concert where you lose your hearing if you go without earplugs, yet if you do go with earplugs you cannot get everything. If I do listen to any loud or heavy music, it tends to be at a volume level that i can stnad and that is easy on the ears. A message sent hours later showed up in the digest but this earlier one didn't.] Hi all, First, here's a quick message from Lenedra(Jewel's mom/manager): <> ***************************************** Just to follow up on some other things while I have you here: Worry not if the "guitar picks" aren't ready in time for Jewel's birthday. I've assured the people involved that I can have them waiting for her upon her return from Europe as a "welcome home" kinda thing. As far as I know, one EDA may still be able to deliver them in Cologne, but if not, it won't be a problem because: Jewel will not be going without an actual EDA gift on her birthday. Thanks to the incredible thoughtfulness & generosity of EDA Gerry Lipnowski, Jewel will be getting something unique & incredible on her birthday from ALL the EDAs. Since Gerry took the initiative & cost to aquire this gift, I want him to tell you all about it when he gets back from Israel in about a week. I can tell you that it will definately blow everybody's minds--especially Jewel's!! EDA Amy Nuefeld also designed a beautiful hand water colored card from ALL the EDAs that will accompany Gerry's surprise which is also being given in the name of ALL the EDAs. I also enclosed a personal message detailing all the things we're doing (EDAF,JPK Fund, Raffle, Blood drive, Gatherings, Hot Dog Fest & Berryhill/Hummelfest) so she'll be aware of it all on her birthday. I've already given these things to Lenedra & she will personally deliver them in Cologne Germany on Jewel's birthday. :-) Adam & I will display these very special birthday gifts on the "Pieces Of Jewel" website, so everyone will be able to see the card & gift when the time comes. PLEASE before anyone gets in a huff about why any of this was done without total EDA involvement, I suggest you patiently wait & see the results for yourself! I personally guarantee that each & every one of you will be very proud to be included in this particular gift. These things were done on behalf of ALL the EDAs & I assure you, Jewel will be extremely touched. Lenedra has already told me so! Gerry will announce his wonderful gift idea & you'll all be able to see this stuff after he makes his announcement in about a week. (He is out of the country right now so don't bother writing him for more info.) It's only right that he has the honor of telling you about this. In the meantime, do what you can to support the EDAF's JPK Fund & Blood Drive. Or do something worthy in your own community! Dan Stark, driving the party 'stang, threatened to arrive with his passengers at 3 AM if the weather didn't relent, so I was facing another possibly long night. It rained all the way to the theater, so I was not reassured. The Chuck Marten concert Friday night at the Emerson went off OK; I managed to get my wife to keep an eye out for potential last-minute drop-ins while I was at the concert, and managed to get a decent audience recording of their set. It was worth it, even though I had to sit through an opening performance by a rather repellent redneck/rock/rap band whose lead singer reminded me strongly of a number of disco DJs I've heard. Toni's band was high on energy, and got a great response from the 20-30 people who outlasted the opening acts. Sharron actually crowd-surfed, but was immediately grabbed and placed back on stage by a couple of too-helpful fans. I got a roll of pictures, including one priceless shot of a fan on stage wearing a ShowBiz Pizza "Billy-Bob" mask. So I packed up and split as soon as the set ended; my fears were groundless, as there was no one in the driveway yet. My wife Linda had fallen asleep in her office in the spare bed while studying Calculus, so I elected to let her sleep. Minutes after unloading the recording equipment from the car, I was startled by a roar and a squeal in the driveway. The EDAs had arrived, hours early. I rushed downstairs and out into the abating storm to help them unload. Big hugs from Liz & Shelly, handshakes from Tim & Dan. They were in good spirits from the journey, and had obviously made good time. We were taking the grand house tour a few minutes later when Toni arrived. She stayed up a while as we all chatted and shared stories of the past few weeks, but finally had to trot off to bed. Shelly presented me with a lovely gift -- one of the official Hotdog Fest T-shirts. Great for wearing to Rugburns concerts! Liz & Shelly started to sleep on the floor before I reminded them of the nice warm water bed awaiting upstairs. They gratefully crawled up to the master bedroom; Dan, Tim, and I talked for a while longer and then called it a night. I slept on the couch so my back wouldn't be too messed up the next morning. Shelly & Liz rejoined us about 9 AM or so, electing to nap on the floor till everyone else was awake. Rusty came over around 10, and he & Toni surprised us by bringing donuts in about the time everyone was waking up. I carefully dressed under my blanket to avoid a repeat of the "naked guy" episode (to embarrassing applause as I finally cast the blanket aside). We all managed to get cleaned up and take showers, expecting a busy afternoon. Dan and I started the tape dubbing that has become a hallmark of most EDA events, and one by one the rest of the band and some of their outside friends drifted in. Neil showed up first, making a big hit with the ladies ("We told you, he's hyper!") and Sharron came by a little later with speakers, after scamming the PA/monitor system from Mike who is currently handling the re-recording of their CD. Mike arrived last with the electronics, and began hooking up his PA system for the event. Meanwhile, Toni cooked her famous extra-spicy chili for lunch/dinner and Dan & I ran out for film and snacks. My wife brought spaghetti and breadsticks for the less adventurous, and everyone mingled while waiting for the time to be right. It was still raining, so we elected to set up the band inside. Mike and his guitarist friend played for a bit to warm up the equipment and the crowd; I lugged recording equipment down from the studio. Shelly passed her Hotdog Fest pictures around, and I was made extremely jealous. At last it was time for the concert. We did a brief sound check, and happy with the results we started about 4:30. Sharron was unable to get a broken string replaced on her loaner guitar in time, so Rusty's old Gibson (now ours) was pressed into service as a replacement. The band played for about 45 minutes, getting an enthusiastic response from the crowd and putting out even more energy than the night before. Liz sat stoically in the very front, absorbed. The rest of us stayed a safer distance away, or wore earplugs; the sound was definitely above average for a concert, though still quite loud. After the main event, there was a break and the band mingled with the crowd. Another band, The Bardo Kit, which has opened for CM on occasion, was next to play. I can't give a detailed review of their set because I was upstairs rewinding tapes and preparing to record the acoustic set afterward. We also took every spare minute to dub tapes, knowing that time was limited and the decks were constantly in demand. Back downstairs, Toni & Rusty set up for their "unplugged" performance; we had some difficulty mic'ing the guitars but managed to get a decent balance anyway, thanks to Mike's help. Unfortunately his vocal compressor decided to blow a fuse at the last moment, so we had to set levels carefully and trust the eequipment a little more. Their set was a two-parter with a half-hour break, and was well-received by the crowd. I was particularly touched by Toni's performance of a rather scathing song she wrote called "Daddy"; she dedicated it to "My biological father -- not Greg, who's my real father". Teen angst (her phrase, not mine). Things dissipated a bit after that; there was some live acoustic stuff performed by whoever happened to want to play, but we went ahead and broke down the PA so Mike could take it home and get some well-deserved rest. The post-show party took off at that point; Dan and I kept running tapes, while he and Tim alternated talking on IRC all evening. After midnight, things tapered off a bit, but there were still die-hard partiers going strong when I finally fell into bed about 2 AM. I later learned that several people stayed the night rather than drive home in an intoxicated state; a good choice, and always welcome here. I offered my bed to Liz & Shelly again, but they insisted that I should go ahead and get a proper night's sleep in my own bed. I acquiesced. Liz was last seen curled up on the living room floor, oblivious to her surroundings except for the occasional candid snapshot taken by the roving photographers. Shelly was taking advantage of the opportunity to meet and chat with new people, and I guess Dan & Tim were on IRC all night. :-) I struggled awake about 10, came downstairs to find more pastries awaiting. The last of the overnighters had departed, and Dan & I finished up the weekend's tape dubbing. It was decided that we would all head into Indy for a shopping/lunch expedition; two cars were needed and the station wagon carried an additional passenger who needed a ride home after the party. Unfortunately, the locally famous Smedley's was closed, so we settled for Broad Ripple and its wacky shops instead. I pointed out the wonderful night clubs including the Patio (where the Rugburns will appear shortly) and my favorite hangout the Vogue. There was shopping galore, and Liz & Shelly came away with new shoes. I was browbeaten into providing a pair for Toni as well. We ate at the other locally famous Bazbeaux Pizza, to everyone's satisfaction. Dan noted it was getting sufficiently late that we should start for home soon; we split from the others and took a scenic but fast route back to Greenfield. And then it was over. Everyone was checking their belongings, hauling them out to the party 'stang. We took a few minutes to pose for pictures, postponing the inevitable, but our EDAs did need to leave. Hugs again, goodbye all, thanks for coming. Last-minute instructions, waves, and off they roared. Sigh. It was fun, but now I have to go back and face another week in the real world. Oh well -- Rugburns concert in 2 weeks here in Indy! Again the following week in Toledo! Lilith Fair! More EDA gatherings! I'm all fired up again. But right now I'm sleepy, so I'll post this and it's off to beddie-bye. Thanks again, Tim, Dan, Shelly, Liz, Mike, Linda, and of course Chuck Marten for their unselfish gift. We might do this again later on in the summer, so stay tuned. - -- | Greg Dunn | I shut out acceptance so I won't | | gregdunn@indy.net | get hurt; and move on to the next| | GregDunn@aol.com | one who will treat me like dirt. | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Patti Rothberg | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 May 1997 15:23:59 -0400 (EDT) From: CaptainZen@aol.com Subject: Jewel on "Batman & Robin" soundtrack EDAs- Sorry this is a little slow, but I'm an idiot and didn't know how to post to the mailing list. I love that song. Oh yes!!!! I am not a good dancer but when I hear that song I want to dance with happiness. Same with another one kinda like it, Eleanor I think it's called. "Eleanor gee I think you're swell and you really know me well..." Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's the only song in history that has the word 'etc' in it. That cracks me up for some reason. I'm sure that's what it says....
