For those who still haven't had a chance to meet any, I highly recomend it. Today was the day of the BagelBash, I had to wake up at 7:30am for this, I know it doesn't sound that early, but it is to me so there, anyways I'm glad I did it. Slowly, but surely EDA's started coming in and we had ourselves a party. I also got to meet James himself, very nice gentleman. Just meeting this guy, and I now there are more out there, is an inspiration to me. There is hope in the world, there is no need to board any spaceships to heaven (just kidding, hope I didn't offend anyone, if I did I apologize). We all are part of the big picture here, and it is up to us how it comes out, it could be work of art that will be cherished for years to come or if it is something we have little faith in it is doomed from the begging. Sorry if I don't make much sense. I'm not the most articulate person in expressing myself, but I try. Just had to say that you guys are the best, and keep it up. Oh yeah, here's a little suggestion, it makes me feel good, so I'm going to pass it on. When you see someone, could be your best friend or a Perfect Stranger, but think something nice about them, it could be something like they have a nice smile, or something as "cheesy"(which is term which conotates the notion of bad, but it's not) you like their shoes. You don't actually have to tell them, but just think it. Okay just tell me to shut up now, privately of course. It will take me a few days to catch up on some of my mail. I promise everyone that entered the raffle a personal response to confirm your entry. Let me start at Saturday night 12 hours before BagelBash. I went with Erick Garske to Java Joe's to see Gregory Page. We were planning on meeting Jamie and also met Eric Altman. I was there for a purpose. You ask, what was I doing at a show with so little time left before such an important event the next morning. We were on a mission. Jamie made an excellent partner for the job ahead of us. We first talked to Java Joe. I told him of Jewels suggestion that we help James. I told him of the fine work the EDAs were doing on James' behalf. I told him about BagelBash and the Celebration of Hope. I told him about the raffle and the tremendous amount of people that gave. Those of you that know me, know that I told him everything there was to tell and more. He begged me to tell him how he could help. I let him off easy. We are meeting during the week to discuss the show we EDAs are taking James out to at Joe's. He promises he will do whatever he can to make the show special. The next thing I had to do was to get Jamie to lure Gregory over so we could get his help. That was easy. What was easier was to convince Gregory for his help. Just as when I first met and talked to Jewel and found her to be a true refection of the beautiful music she sang, so did I with Gregory. His music is a thing of beauty and he is just as beautiful of a soul. He too will help make our evening out with James a very special evening. Now I'm going to skip a whole bunch of stuff that I will get back to in a later post. I asked James if he would give us the privilege of joining a group of EDAs at a show on May 15th at Java Joe's to see Gregory Page. He was very happy to do so. I told his father that I would pay for the rental of a special van to get him to the show. Now that many of the EDAs have finally got to meet him, let them tell you their story. But let me just prepare you. Everyone will tell you it certainly will be a privilege for you to meet him. I came for a Celebration of Hope and left with James being that symbol of hope. We all left gaining more from meeting him than we even imagined. He knows what it is like to walk under his own power. He never asked to have his life so drastically changed. But he isn't going to be stopped by this challenge. We had destiny (and Jewel) bring James into our lives. He is going to help us strip the word impossible from our vocabulary. You all need to see why. All of you have done so much already, but I am going to ask you to do one more thing. Join us in a very special evening, with a very special artist, at a very special place, with many of the best people you will ever meet, EDAs. James is about to also join us on line and become our newest EDA. So when we go out with him, he is going to be just another EDA. And he is also ready to help the next EDA with what you all gave him. HOPE! Mark your calendars. An Evening out with James Paul Kalanic and Friends Gregory Page, Bizarre/Planet artist, Former Rugburn Thursday May 15th Java Joe's - Home of the Sound of San Diego Ocean Beach, CA USA Please let me know if you are coming. It is important that I get email back from you if you plan to come. More details will be posted soon. Igor P.S. That's at the address Kris posted, (And thank you Kris for your very kind words. I can hear Jewel's voice in my head saying "I'm embarassed". And it's really something coming from an EDA who saw the Beatles at Shea Stadium AND attended Woodstock! What a list this is -- from Woodstock to Jewelstock.) I do think for sure I've written the article with the longest title about Jewel. Well, the main part of the article will be published in the next issue of SODA at the end of this month. SODA has some other Jewel content (including a cool interview from before her 1996 Vancouver show) and has pictures and graphics that are lacking in my own web-page. (But I'll still post up the second part on my site for EDAs to preview. Part II is going to be more fun, less analysis of the world and much more Jewel -- lyrics and commentary.) It's a lot of work, especially when your compuer doesn't work and you have to rely on the stupid hous of the computer center and each paper and each exam is really really tough. EEK! Despite all this, I have somehow managed to let my creative energy flow through me. (Or maybe it is BECAUSE of all this? Not quite sure on that one...) I have no written a poem in what seems like forever but has really been a grand total of 9 days, until last night. This poem, like so much of my other stuff, has no title. I wrote it for this guy I know at school who is really talented, really beautiful, and who has this inredible sincerity in a quick look in his eyes..something really rare here. I have admired him from afar for so long now, and last night I just wrote...this is what came out... by Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos written 5.5.97 I'm alive with the flowering trees with the way the sun shines on his smile and the way his voice carries in the wind. When I dream I see his dark button eyes telling stories of intense passion rooted in his soft lamb face colored pink with gentle sincerity. His beauty lies not in the gentle curls of his hair or the captivation of his smile but in the way swaying trees reveal his voice, in the way his eyes reveal his kiss, his soul. "He" is here-when I close my eyes- "he" is you. It's purely indescribable, but when I dream, you are there. The gentle rain, your sweet voice, embraces me. Soft flower petals, the motion of your hands, cares or me. One look, on sound, and I am water traveling down the river, searching for your home, hoping for your soul. many times have I taken flight in your voice, many tims have I bloomed to the joy in your stride, many tims have I admired from afar. the insanity of it all is that I have never spoken to you, is that the sond of my name resonating from your voice is as alien as the concept of me being worthy of anything good, of anything beautiful. Your soul's beauty, the spiritual beauty of the first star of night, overwhelms me. Oft have I yearned to behold your glory. My dreams, the perfection of a full moon of completion of all that is nature, Oft have I dreamed of one kiss, one embrace. (the end) I know it sounds really unfinished. After this much writing I ended up finding myself thinking about what words to put next, and I knew that was wrong to the poem, you know? ARGH BUt my creativity is there..it' probably REALLY dangerous for it to be there with all this stress I am under and all the stuff I have to do, but it lives! In my experience, the active changing of Dolby does more harm to the signal than the variation in levels. Dolby is not a precise process. The Dolby circuit on a Sony ES will read and process the enoded signal differently than that of a Denon. Even the differing head sensitivy (and different gain "zeroing" internal to the deck) between different models by the same manufacturer may result in enough variations to confuse the Dolby circuit. This disagreement about Dolby is also precisely why many people have agreed to simply not use it any noise reduction at all. With good Metal tapes on good decks, the slight loss compares favorably to the differences inherent to the many different brands (and thus "tuning" differences in recording) and potential incompatibilities. MHO, of course. >Just my opinion. But an informed one. Others may disagree. May? post to an audiophile group... disagreement guaranteed, or your money back. :) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@best.com, negativl@netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 May 1997 14:21:54 -0400 (EDT) From: Sshaggie@aol.com Subject: This is a cool puzzle Everyone....Please read this though it entirely....You will be amazed by the results. As a person who was an audiophile in college this is very correct. More over, my personal take is that Dolby was the stupidest invention ever to come to analog audio. By its very nature of "noise reduction" it degrades the signal, and every Dolby system does it differently. I would urge everyone to STOP using Dolby for treed audio tapes. Because of the different interpretive nature of each deck, Dolby is one assured way of seriously affecting the playability of music on a remote system. You may use it for your own system if you feel it sounds better, but don't use it for treed tapes on the assumption it will sound better for other people. Odds are it will only make it worse. May 20th in Cambridge, Patty will be appearing at Club Passim. This is a wonderful restaurant by day and concert venue by night. If we can get some EDAs together and have a meal before the show, we can sit close enough to touch Patty. You will be about 2 feet from her. Definitely an intimate setting. The entire club only seats about 150 people. This will definitely be a treat for all attending. If your interested in coming just e-mail me and I'll take care of all the details. It is a reservation type show rather than having to buy tickets ahead of time you just tell them that you are coming and make a reservation. When you show up on the 20th the tickets will be $12.50, and you pay at the door. Everyone if you can, please make it to this show. This is a club with a rich history of showcasing up and coming talent. Shawn Colvin, Nancy Griffith, and many others had their starts there. Hope to see you there. Talk to you soon.
