Please do not forward any chain letters. If you read the bottom of the letter, it has a curse in it for anyone who does not forward on the letter and a blessing for those who do. This is called witchcraft, plain and simple. I do like how the body of the letter makes you think about drinking and driving. But then again, this kind of material sends a signal that says it's OK to get drunk as long as you don't drive. I can't use any materials like this to minister to anyone who has a need in this area of their life, because I use the Word of God. The Bible says not to get drunk at all. Each person is different and responds to certain types of counsel positively, and negatively towards others. In each case however, I always show a person that God loves them and wants the best for their lives and that's why God says that we are not to be drunk. This is all about how much God loves us, not that He made up a bunch of do's and dont's to keep us from ever having fun. On the contrary, it's to keep us from getting hurt (or burnt). I'm not trying to come down on anyone for this. I just wanted to point out something that may have missed or had not been considered before. We had decided that Metal (Type IV) settings are so prevalent on single-bay cassette decks now that people shouldn't worry about sending Type IV blank cassettes to the branches for getting copies. Metal-Type IV has been out for about 19 years; almost all cassette decks now have the capability to record and playback using that formula of tape. As for Dolby, I personally prefer not to have my tapes encoded. With metal cassettes taped at 70 uV recording equalization curve (the standard for Type IV) the noise level is so low, in my opinion, to not warrant the possible Dolby tracking errors that could occur on a Dolby-encoded tape in which the record and playback (decode) are slightly different in calibration. This may occur when the record deck and the playback deck are different. The post to the list recommending Maxell UDXLIIS cassettes seems to be a leap backward for sound quality. Given the widespread availability of Type IV-comaptible machines, I see no reason to recommend that the branches produce copies on Type II blank cassettes, rather than Type IV. I hear significant sound accuracy and quality differences between the Maxell Type II cassette and TDK MA, or even better, TDK MA-X cassettes. Furthermore, I can tell a noticeable difference between MAXELL UDXLIIS and the competingTDK Type II product. As for the comment about Dolby tracking levels, I was unaware the branches, as a standard practice, encode the cassettes with Dolby-B. If this is true, none of my tapes came back marked that way. I would recommend against it, if it is being done, but at a minimum the recipients should know that they have such an encoded tape, by having it marked somehow. I hope that all the branches' machines would be Type IV-compatible because the copies they produce are supposed to be of the highest quality. I base the above comments on several sources, including my own listening tests on my home system that includes two high-quality three-head Nakamichi cassette decks both of which can be individually calibrated for different tape formulations. It'd be better to use a bulk-eraser on it, but since audio-cassette is at least a linear format, the erase head will usually do an adequate job... It's a nice gesture, but feel free to hand onto whichever tape you still have for your own use... okay, with that out of the way... James Reach wrote: > dubbing just before this thread began. Given the widespread availability of Type > IV-comaptible machines, I see no reason to recommend that the branches produce > copies on Type II blank cassettes, rather than Type IV. I hear significant I thought the XLII-S/SA-X recommendation was that of *minimum* recommended quality... I consider TypeII to be a "standard" level of media anymore. For most shows, the source tape starts off as a Type II, since most people don't own either Sony pro-walkman, it's questionable whether other portables can generate the current needed for a Metal master... at the least, dynamic range is lost. The lower(numerical) coercivity for typeII makes it better suited for typical live recording. (Though the lower remanence means you would probably want to transfer it to a more durable medium anyway...) For the list trees, however, with the much higher quality source and seed tapes, MrBB's TLC and such, I definitely recommend the best tapes you can afford... I've ended up settling on Maxell MX-S myself, sometimes TDK MA-X. I had some good experiences with Sony Metal Masters, but the price/performance doesn't justify it over the typical prices Tower charges for MX-S/MA-X... (actually, for non-Jewelstock, are we still bound by the rules against DAT or HiFi videotape? even analog DAT copies offer wonderful S/N and excellent dynamic range...) > As for the comment about Dolby tracking levels, I was unaware the branches, as > a standard practice, encode the cassettes with Dolby-B. If this is true, none I personally don't encode anything that hasn't been determined by the tree admin... Even then, I'm not the one doing the encoding. The branch copy I get from the seed has the Dolby (if any) already on it... I turn off Dolby on my decks and let the already encoded signal pass clean. The only time I activate dolby is when A) the tree has set one standard, and B) the leaf has requested another (rare). (as such, I never notify branches of the "standard" encoding, because the tree admin has already done that.) > I hope that all the branches' machines would be Type IV-compatible because the > copies they produce are supposed to be of the highest quality.
