However, for those of us who cannot give blood for health (or other) reasons and have decided to perform some other individual act of compassion, I was wondering if this was something we were going to do on a collective basis. Could we prepare a list or something that could be given to Ms. Kilcher from the EDA's - about what else we've done - upon her return from Europe? Again, please forgive me if this has already been discussed, and I missed it. Have a nice evening angels. I agree 100% with Rachel's post that the term "Jap" is derrogatory and should not be used during conversation. I personally found it offensive in school when others would refer to Jews as money-misers, cheats, well-to-do, or head of world-wide conspiracy controlling banking and the media in jokes or other statements. And they did, and then tried to laugh it off or say, "no offense" etc. It was offensive, but I was a minority and had to suck it up. When I first heard Jewel's music I heard the lines, "You say he's a Jew do you think he's tight You say he'sa Jew will he hate his kids tonight You say he's a Jew He'll never wear that funny hat again You say he's a Jew as if being born is a sin Oh Jew Oh Jew Do you hate him? 'Cause he's pieces of you." I actually love the song "Pieces of You" even with these lines. Jewel is shunning political correctness and pointing out that we all have stereotypes. Instead of sweeping them under the rug, we should keep them exposed and recognize that all of the negative feelings we have about the group in our stereotypes actually are part of what make us who we are; as part of the human fabric, each one of the other groups make up part of us; they are pieces of us. There were reports in the L.A. Times just before Jewel's first headline shows at the John Anson Ford Theater (May, 1996) that several anti-gay groups and others were urging that she stop singing "Pieces of You." Also, since she was coming to L.A. where there is a large Jewish and gay population in the entertainment industry they would strongly object to her singing this song. (They were all present for an Atlantic Records "congratulations on becoming Platinum party") Jewel shunned those critics and sang the song in L.A., but I believe did not do so in San Francisco. Those critics miss the point. "Pieces of You" only makes sense by being politically incorrect and saying the wrong thing...indeed it says, "faggot" not "gay" which is derrogatory in itself.
