To Angel and all of the EDA's on this list. Right on! We do tend to put those we idolize on a pedestal from which we see that they can do no wrong. That is one thing which we must not ourselves do. There is no way that we all as a gathring can think that Jewel can be the most perfect human being in wevery way. Admittedly she does have her positive aspect but being human she does have a negative side. Remember that we (and I don't mean everybody) don't know totally everything about her. We tend to judge using what we do know and that will never be the full story. Examples could be if you happen to meet someone who just happens to seem to you to be the worst person in the world because of the way they look be totally opposite from what picture as a good person and they are in actuality a very caring and decent person. Ever seen the clips showing bikers who have a rep for being of one attitude and ended up being totally different from their rep. To judge anybody, one must know them. Just because Jewel supports good acts, sings of wondrous attitudes, is beuatiful in both body in spirit does not mean that she is a god. Remeber the (from the christian point of view) passage that says "Thou shalt have no gods before me" I know that the quotes in the sig twnd to support one attitude, the songs tend to be motivating for me. Sorry to get off track. Okay back to what I was saying. Being a fan does not mean that you are a fanatic. It just means that you appreciate and like her music and songs. You might like her to. For some thios can lead to a fanatical status, but I think this list is herer to discuss her music. So before I go remember that to act kindly and supportive of one another might be the way that Jewel would like us to act but that is the way we should act anyways as a member of the Human race. If you have to respond do it privatley, not by the list. I know that I went against what I just said and am adding to the extra messages jus trespond if you truly feel that you must. Most teachers are very different in class than they really are. There has only been one teacher that I've had that I haven't been able to win over, and actually, I'm the only person in the whole freshman class the she actually likes. unfortunately, it hasn't changed my grades yet. Don't get me wrong, i think that to each his/her own and we all should have different opinions about everything, cause that's what makes the world go round. Just don't forget we're all EDAs!!! If I lived on the east coast and could arrange the work time off, I'd fly to Germany for the experience at the drop of a hat (or puck). The price is great that was posted here. I've never gone to New York to see Rent, but I did fly to N.Y. from the West Coast for a New Year's weekend once, I've camped out overnight to get front row centre Dylan seats (in the '70s -- that was AFTER Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies for those into carbon dating! -- BTW my brother still has the "Different Drum" single -- it's great), travelled over 1000 miles to see Sheryl Crow in Las Vegas, spent what seemed liked days on a bus to see Jewel in concert -- and I wouldn't have missed enjoying those experiences for anything. If I could, I'd do more things like that. I'm tired now, so forgive me if I'm repeating -- it was on this Jewel-EDA list or somewhere else on the net I read the famous quote about how when you're old you won't regret the things you've done, but you'll regret the things you haven't done. Some people are getting way too hung up on how others should or shouldn't live their lives. Remember we are ALIVE! Enjoy it, fill it, follow your dreams. You're not going to be here forever. So what's the point of niggling over what's weird, or freaky, or cool, or uncool, or strange, or insane. No one has the copyright on these states. There's 5 billion + of us and fortunately some of us are free enough to go to Cologne, or Egypt or San Diego or anywhere on this planet we desire. And some people seem to forget that everyones' lives exist outside this list -- I don't spend every day travelling hundreds of miles to see shows -- I've also travelled 1000s of miles to see pyramids, and mosques and temples, the Wailing Wall and other sights. Fish and flowers and people and beaches and exotic foods. Pretty weird stuff all of it to some. The reason we're on this list is because of our common interest in Jewel. It would be pretty weird if most of the discussions WEREN'T focussed on positive expressions about our interest. But it's obsessive to think that this is all that's going on in the heads, hearts and lives of EDAs. This is what we choose to talk about when we post to this list. I don't know what point there would be if many postings were negative or were just about the countless hours spent working, or at school, or doing other things (there's lots of mailing lists for people with other things they want to talk about) So, please, lighten up if you feel like being cynical or trashing somebody on this list. It's sort of like complaining that water is wet. We're here for a positive reason and griping and complaining and obsessive over-analyzing probably have their own places on the web. If not, those interested can easily start their own gripe-sites and find more like spirited parties to join them. But why pick on your fellow human beings? Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 20:49:31 -0400 From: Kris Kane Subject: Offering support to the EDA Foundation Hello Alan (MrBB), I'm very glad to hear your announcement of the EDAF developments! As a 49 year old EDA, who grew up in the sixties, went to Woodstock, and marched for civil rights, I can say without a doubt that my interest in Jewel, her music and the EDAs is directly related to the degree in which Jewel's art expresses the importance of kindness and respect for life. I would like to volunteer my services in whatever way you and the others feel is needed. I'd like to share with you something that I wrote to a friend last week that I think is relevant to the discuission of the EDAF. Here it is. ************************************** Dear friend, In case you are wondering why I respect and admire Jewel so much, I'm struck by the opportunity that she has to be an agent of cultural change. I'm interested in the phenomenon of how her inner purity, combined with the charisma (personal power) she possesses, allows her the opportunity to set a tone and, in a sense become a living magnet to draw a significant segment of a generation in a more healthy direction. I once read an intersting article in the New York Times that described the disproportionate influence that Bob Dylan had on a generation (and huge numbers of other singers that followed) regardless of his relatively small record sales and very few top ten hits. The author mentioned that, despite Dylan being recognized as "the voice of the sixties", his fans were actually a very small segment of the population. I know that a comparison with Dylan may seem farfetched, to someone who is only familiar with Jewel's debut CD "Pieces of You", however the comparison between Jewel and Dylan does repeatedly come up in critic's reviews. What I'm intrigued by is her strong appeal to a segment of society that are sensitive and idealistic and who savour her purity, which is so rare in the world they've grown up in. I respect her as a voice of reason, a lighthouse of inspiration, in the sea of cynical self-indulgent nihilism typified by a plethora of mediocre grunge bands. Jewel is a fresh breeze that's redirecting her generation and society at large back to a respect for nature, life and each other. ******************************** I think you can see from that, Alan, where I'm coming from and why I am so excited about your announcement of the EDA Foundation. Please keep me informed of any EDAF developments. I'd like to be VERY involved.
