On the subject of female artists, I know she's been mentioned on the list before, but Tori Amos is AWESOME, and truly worth listening to. She has three albums out, my favorite is *Little Earthquakes*. I also have to rave about Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, they came out with the song "What I Am." Their album *Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars* kicks butt, and has the aforementioned song on it. Also cool is Jill Sobule, I don't have her new CD but I have a copy of her debut CD and I love it as well. I also love Selena, and Celine Dion's *Falling Into You.* Thanks for listening. Love, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 1997 23:40:40 -0400 From: "Michael H. Weller" Subject: in defense of cover songs; and keats and "morning song" Hey EDA's, Haven't checked my mail in a few days, so sorry if I seem a bit behind. In response to "Doof" (I assume this is a nickname): When we say that we would like to hear her cover songs, we don't really mean that we would want to hear her do a complete album just of covers, or do all the covers we suggest (what a gargantuan that would be). I don't even know that I would want to hear her do a cover on an album, but I would find it incredibly interesting ( I think this is the key word that spurs us all to suggest these covers) to hear her do one of the songs in concert. (Sorry I didn't quote Doof's message. I'm still figuring out this whole e-mail thing, and, frankly, I'm incompetant. Any teachers out there? And by the way, even though the top of this says from Michael, I'm Julie, but you guys can call me Jules (that's my nickname). For the last half-hour I've been squawking at my father to get rid of his name from it, but he's incompetant too.) However, I do agree with you that we all like her for her original songs. There's a fellow Keatsian out there (don't remember who) who'll probably recognize this quote that profoundly illustrates the effect of Jewel's songs on me: Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on --"Ode on a Grecian Urn", Keats Keats essentially means that art (in this case music) stirs our imaginations so that the visions that we gain from within are even more essential than the artwork itself. I don't just hear Jewel's songs, but I SEE, FEEL, TASTE, TOUCH the songs too. I go through periods where different songs are my favorites--presently "1,000 Miles Away" and "Sometimes It Be That Way" are strattling that position-- but "Morning Song" is my enduring favorite because of the very tactileness (made-up-word alert!) of the song. Can't you also feel the sun on your toes as you watch them curl over the splintery boards of the whitewashed front porch? Can't you also smell the bittersweetness of the coffee, and feel the warmth of the mug between your palms? Please don't tell me you can't taste the fruit and almond tea. Since we started on cover songs, I can now also reply to Dan and Bill Yeh as well as add yet more additions to the evergrowing list. (Someone really should compile these and send them to Jewel). Dan, it's not MISS it's just "American Pie". But, I can definately hear Jewel singing: And the three men I admire most The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost Caught the last train for the coast The day the music died And Bill, you read my mind, I swear. Yesterday I was also thinking of "Different Drum". I don't know if it needs to be slowed down though. By the way, although Linda does the vocals, it's really by the Stone Ponies. And suggesting the song doesn't date you. I was not born when that song came out, but I know it. Since we're discussing that era, I thought I'd suggest some more Peter, Paul, and Mary. (I think we should, after all, acknowledge her base in folk): I've already mentioned "Puff the Magic Dragon" but it's worthy of mention again. "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" "If I Had a Hammer"-- I'd hammer out danger I'd hammer out warning I'd hammer out love between My brothers and my sisters All over this land "Lemon Tree"-- When I was just a lad [girl] of ten (slowed) My father said to me Come here and learn a lesson From the lovely lemon tree From more recent times: "Eat for Two"--=10,000 Maniacs "Joey"-- Concrete Blonde And just for laughs, some They Might Be Giants "Istanbul" or "Particle Man" or maybe both. Sorry for the novel and asta la bye-bye, Julie P.S. Thanks everyone for the info on John Kruk. I must have gotten something like 15 responses, but I read each one. Scary. I wish I could know about these people before they are overplayed!!!! So, can anyone recommend me something? I know how much y'all love to spread your music tastes. I am looking for a singer with an honestly GOOD voice, like Jewel or Tori. I love, like Liz Phair and Ani Difranco, but I don't think they have very beautiful voices, I just love their music. The biggest reason I first loved Jewel is because she had such a pure voice, and it seems like nothing on the radio is any good anymore. I just want someone with a pure and clear and beautiful voice.. Also, are there any female singers who sing hard rock , like really hard, but have a nice voice too??? And. can someone tell me what Cibo Matto sounds like? I think I want to buy the CD but I've never heard them before. A friend of mine has it, but I don't know if she'll lend it to me. Weller" Subject: Jewel idolatry I must agree with Mike. And I give you full credit for the highly reasoned and well articulated defense of your opinion about the idolatry growing up around Jewel. (Again everyone, I'm the same moron who doesn't know how to quote yet--sorry) She is human. And I think reminding us of what we act like AS HUMANS puts into perspective what she must act like when she's out of angel-mode. But as for this "we're all angels" stuff, I think it further supports your reasoning. Angels have always been these ethereal beings of perfection and beauty that humans vainly strive for. In saying that we're all angels, Jewel is telling us to stop striving for this unattainable ideal but realize that humanity, with all its foibles, is beautiful. So what if she was being rude on Nickelodean (which I am really tired of reading about now), she was being human. Don't you guys hate the perfect people you meet in your day-to-day lives? They're just so, what's the word I'm looking for, boring-maybe? Has anyone ever read Gullivers Travels? Swift paints the picture of boring and even cruel perfection in these horse-people called Hounounyms, but the Yahoos (the human-like) are passionate and even sqaubbly, but so much more sympathetic. And Blake (the all-time greatest poet, but don't attempt him until late high school and stick to "Songs of Innocence and Experience" until you get to college and the really cool stuff) even uses angels as an oppressive image. Perfection, when it becomes dogmatic and represses criticism, turns into a dystopic dictatorship. Certainly the EDA's don't want to be that. I think this is Mike's well-taken point. Anybody interested in books on dystopia here's an alternative to the normal "Brave New World" or "Anthem": "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin--written right after the Russian Revolution (1921) and only very recently published in Russia because of the communist repression there. And anyone with a lot of time on their hands, although not a dystopia, read "The Brothers Karamozov" by Dostoyevsky-- the most profound, mindboggling novel ever created. I suggest reading the section "Pro and Contra" at least three times. Be prepared-- the novel's 800 pages at least. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Apr 1997 00:17:39 -0500 (EST) From: Sean Hooks Subject: To the Mike guy Date: 25-Apr-1997 00:14am EDT From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: To the Mike guy Hey Mike I am a long time EDA and have been saying a lot of the same things you have for over a year now. I spend a lot of time watching people, and there are all kinds of very minute clues, especially in body language that can give away what someone is feeling. Looking into a person's eyes is certainly a very good way of determining that. The only problem of looking into a person's eyes is sometimes, you will see more than you want to know. Another problem, some people aren't willing to let you read their soul. It's very unfortunate. There are so many things that can be said without words, and I'm not sure, but I think this quote is from a country song,(Unfortunately) "The smile on your face, lets me know that you need me, there's a truth in your eyes sayin' you'll never leave me, just the touch of your hand, says you'll catch me if ever I fall. Yeah, you say it best, when you say nothing at all." Write back. They both have just about the same amount of votes too. Obviously, people from the X- files mailing list (If there is one) or the Xfiles fan club are casting multiple votes, and it's up to us to give them a taste of their own medicine and vote for Jewel. There's about 1500 people subscribed, and if we each vote 10 times she'll win, and nothing bad can come from that.
