I am the t-shirt guy for Rockfest and wanted to know if you guys wanted a bunch of different shirts to choose from (EDA, Rockfest) and what colors you would like. The shirts are going to be around $15 and I will be setting up a table at the tailgate party on June 20 and then before and after the show on June 21. Specific details closer to the show to follow. ______________________________________ Attn: Phil, Larry, Farr and Terrence: Phil, if you still have Jewelstock t-shirts that you need to sell, Rockfest would be a good place to do so since we are looking at around 75 EDAs attending -- if you want to send them over to me I can sell them at the EDA table with the other shirts I am selling. Also, I was wondering if I can please get permission to use your angel logo on the some of the Rockfest t-shirts. Larry, this would also be a good chance to sell the rest of your EDA posters (so you won't go bankrupt:). You can also send them to me and I'll sell them at the EDA table for you if you like. ;) Farr and Terrence, how are the buttons coming along? Give me a buzz and we can communicate about setting up the table and discuss prices and such. ;) Thanks guys for your help! -- JE P.S. -- Larry can you please forward this to Phil and Farr can you fwd to Terrence -- I don't have their addresses. :) Thanks! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 18:33:33 -0700 From: howenow@imagen.net (Adrian Duplessis) Subject: the EDA gift, community service, great Time Out write-up etc. The James Kalanick project is a worthy goal -- count me in (and I can even see the instructions so I'll be writing to the appropriate party). And I agree that the organizers have shown great sensitivity to getting this project together and presenting it so that EDAs can all be happy. And as has been pointed out by others, everyone can still participate in the pillow, poems, guitar picks, community service, blood giving (not letting), and anything else their heart desires. I'm going to be joining in on a few of these things -- all in the spirit in which they've been proposed. What a great write-up in Time Out magazine. It's nice that U.K. audiences are being introduced to Jewel by knowledgeable reviewers like that. Here is a quick rule: if it is a movie, and it used to be a TV show. DON'T WATCH IT!! If it is a TV show and it used to be a movie, DON'T WATCH IT!! I have yet to find one REALLY good conversion (sept for maybe the Fugitive, but then I've never seen the TV show it was based off of, so that kinda changs things). As for sequals, look at em this way: ask yourself if you REALLY fell that there is anything more that could be done with this plot line. If the answer is no, then forget it. Still this is not a sure bet. Just be ready for the let down. The REALLY bad part is when they make more then one bad sequal. I have been burnt by sequals a lot. the original Highlander movie was great, weak sound effects and all. The second one total defaced the first, even with the good SFX it almost made me wanna turn it off half way through (and I NEVER do that). The third: A good movie... if you have never seen the first. The scary thing about this one was that they ripped off scene from the first movie in it (like the scene where Kain takes Conners' son in the car and uses the illusion powers to make it look like they are going to run into all sortsa things. That same scene is in the first on, only it's Kuragun (sp?) and Brenda, and the real cars insdead of illsions). This movie series also has a TV series based off of it that is surprizingly good (with it's fare share of suck components :p). Then there was the Crow: City of Angels movie. I actually thought that they could make good Crow stroies without Eric Draven... I was wrong. VERY VERY VERY WRONG!!!. The only good thing about this movie was how Mia Watsername (who played Shara) said my name ;]. Jewel is ready to start pushing Foolish Games and with "You Were Meant For Me" now #1, what has she got to loose? The sooner Foolish Games starts it's run, the sooner it finishes it's run and the sooner Atlantic spits out "Fritz Creek". Foolish Games is dramatically different from the other two singles, so DJs will not play it right away, we must persist! As for the Rugburns, they are with a new label now so according to Jewel we should wait on them and give Foolish Games our attention. Steve re informed me that "Lockjaw" is not released, but you'd still be doing the burns a big favor to request "Be Careful what you wish for". A lot of Jewel fans love the song Jessica (including me). Emily was written about a fictional character for the movie "The Crossing Guard," starring Jack Nicholson, while "Jessica" was written and performed about a friend of a friend who died in a car accident just days before she performed the song in Toronto. "Jessica" is one of the perennial favorite Jewel songs, despite it only being performed on one occasion, which was captured on the bootleg, "Rare Angels" cassette. Jewel has recorded Jessica twice for her upcoming new album, in response to a petition of Jewel fans on this mailing list, one an acoustic version and one an electric version. Jewel had to re-learn the song to record it; she announced from the stage at a concert in 1995 or 6 at Montezuma Hall at San Diego State University that she didn't know the song anymore. Anyway, let's hope "Jessica" makes the final cut when she decides what songs to be on her new album. "Emily" was relegated to only a few seconds on the movie "The Crossing Guard" (no soundtrack album was released). James Reach P.S. Jewel also wrote a song for "Dead Man Walking" at the request of the director, Tim Robbins. That song didn't make the final soundtrack companion disk. Nine planets round the sun Only one does the sun embrace Upon this watered one So much to we take for granted So let us sleep outside tonight Lay down in the mother's arms For here we rest safely If green should slip to grey Would our hearts still bloody beat If the mountains crumble away and the river dry Would it stop the stepping feet Take all that we can get When it's done Nobody left to bury Nobody left to dig the holes And here we will rest safely One sweet world Around this star is spinning One sweet world In her breath I'm swimming And here we will rest in peace Okies, I don't know I just think they are nice songs, and I could see Jewel singing them, any hoo I am doing so great, I have a new great Boyfriend, he is the best :) and makes me feel so good, and I find myself writing lots of poetry, and doing stuff for others, and not as much for myself, which makes me even happier, talk to you later my angels, love you all. There But for Fortune (Phil Ochs) Show me a prison, show me a jail, Show me a prisoner whose face has gone pale, And I'll show you a young man with so many reasons why There but for fortune, may go you or I -- you or I Show me the alley, show me the train, Show me a hobo who sleeps out in the rain, And I'll show you a young man with so many reasons why There but for fortune, may go you or go I -- you and I. Show me the famine, show me the frail Eyes with no future that show how we failed And I'll show you the children with so many reasons why There but for fortune, go you or I. Hi Joshua and all EDAs, Jewel is singing about the dad of a friend of hers, not her own. I also think she is talking about the KKK when she says that. Or she is using the color white as a symbolism. "the more you change the less you feel" since life all changes then that explains why children are so sensitive, yet nothing really seems to bother adults. but what if you found a way to retain the feelings so that you could feel the harshness of the adult world, but with the feelings of a child. this is just one of the millions of ideas about life i have floating around in my head. wondering how somone like me, being bashed mentaly all my life, without any self-esteem, could grow up with such an understanding about life. when i read the letter about James Kalanick i was heart broken. there is just too much lame voilence i this world. i have a lot of adeas about life that i remembered while reading jewel's poetry and songs. i seamed like i had writen them, but i didn't, and that is what shocked me. If you are ever worried about somone and you know somthings wrong, but they say that everything is fine, look into thier eyes and try to think about what they are thinking and it is posible to then realize the fellings of the other person. you can also enhance the feelings by watching there actions to other people and thier reactions to other people's actions. i would like to know what you guys think about this and any other ideas about life that you want to share. OF COURSE, some of you are going to think that i am a total wacko, but that is okay, because very few people have come to understand me and the way that i think, so if you would like to write me a letter telling me what you think about this, that would be cool. thanks EDA's. As a Ku Klux Klansman.. > Sorry if this has already been answered, I'm really behind in my digests, but Daddy was written because when she was young (7-9 range I think) she was watching The Jeffersons with some friends and their dad turned the TV off and yelled at the kids. They weren't allowed to watch black people on TV. She thought it was one of the stupidest things she had ever heard. She thinks that hate makes hate, people become what they see. She is against the KKK, and her dad was never a part of it, its just a reference, kinda like Little Sister was about one of her friends younger brothers. Hope this helps, and I'm really sorry if this has already been posted a million times, I just don't want people to think Jewel or her family support the KKK. Now that is probably the > only one that i have seen IMHO can go either way. Thanks for listening Jurassic Park was the first one I thought of, too. But there are others, too, just off the top of my head: Sense and Sensibility, The Shawshank Redemption (which was a short story by Stephen King), To Kill a Mockingbird (Pulitzer Prize winning book, Oscar winning movie), and lots of things that I just can't think of right now. Oh, yeah, The English Patient. I haven't seen it (yet), but it did win 9 Oscars. And it was originally a book (by a Canadian author! Whoo hoo! Go Canada!) Of course, most book to movie translations I've seen are really bad, especially if you read the book before you see the movie. You can't pay atttention to the movie, the whole time you're sitting there saying "That wasn't in the book!" or "Hey, that's not supposed to happen until later!" or "They skipped a scene!"(I hate it when they do that!) Anyone else ever do this? I do it ALL THE TIME! But I can't help it, if I read a good book, I want to see the movie. - --Shaun ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 23:44:57 -0400 (EDT) From: JenniferY@aol.com Subject: Chasing Amy Thought this was funny. Mentioned to someone @ work that I saw this movie. He (note that it was a guy!) said "Oh, isn't Jewel in that movie" -- of course, this did occur to me when I saw the movie (the actress' resemblance) but I know I would have read about a movie staring her if it was true. Isn't there an uncanny resemblance? (Of course, Jewel's voice is SO much nicer). I got there at 10 on the dot (when the show was supposed to start). The only other angel there was Jared, unless there were some incognito. The crowd was dissappointingly small and never grew beyond about 30. Most seemed to be friends and/or long time followers of Cindy Lee. We talked a little to Elizabeth & Cindy Lee before the show started. I had brought a page from the Voice that had a small blurb about the show that was pretty positive which I gave to her. Anyway, she started out a little rough. She said she hadn't gotten much sleep and was tired but I think she might have been dissappointed by the small crowd. She kept referring to it as an intimate show. After about 30 minutes or so, she told us all to stand up & stretch! She said she knew those chairs we were sitting on were really uncomfortable. After we agreed, she had a flash of inspiration - she told us all to come up and sit on the stage! Everyone was hesitant but made their way up and kicked back on the ground around her - it was like a slumber party or something :-) or probably the kind of feeling you guys had at the Snyder's house party. From then on, everyone had a great time. Not only was Elizabeth singing harmony on a lot of songs, but another friend of their's had flown in from San Diego for that show and was doing a third part harmony. It sounded really great. His name was Rick - I can't remember the last name, it started with a K. The grand finale was Radio Astronomy which they had done the night before in Hoboken. It's a great "dance" number using a Casio keyboard for a drumbeat. Unfortunately, when they went to turn the beat on, it didn't work! Cindy had spilled some Coke earlier and apparently it got into the machine. We were bummed until someone told her to show us the beat and we all played it on our legs for the entire song! It was a lot of fun. Afterwards, we hung around and talked for a while - about San Diego mostly. Jared had a burning desire to know where everyone lived in relation to one another (Igor, Jewel, Cindy, Elizabeth, Steve, etc.) Hmmm, better lock your doors! :-) Rick had a lot of good things to say about Jewel's arrival on the SD scene. We helped them bring their stuff to the car (try walking around New York with a toy piano). They *finally* found the car keys and Cindy, Elizabeth, and Rick took off. Jared offered to drive me back to NJ along with another CLB fan who calls himself Pop Boy. But first, we all stopped for a bite at the lovely "Tunnel Diner" on the Jersey City side of the Holland Tunnel. Yummy. For anyone contemplating seeing Cindy Lee and/or Elizabeth, I highly recommend it. And be sure to tell them you're EDA's. They think we're great! Yes, Dennis, I gave them hugs for you. Spit spit, AmyLlama Thirza - I'm so sorry I didn't call you. I was running around all day and completely forgot until I was out the door! ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #293 ***************************
