Come on - I guessed more than half of them. I wish Jewel hadn't of done this show. They didn't care about what she was singing. They started cheering in the middle of the song and I think it was because they thought it was over, not that they loved the song. All the sports teams were obvious - Bulls, Yankees, Packers (notice anything that's similar with them?), and the Magic. And that kid from Jerry Maguire (forgot the name) called Melissa Joan Hart (sp?), Malinda. Rosie didn't know the name of the song Jewel was singing. Immature and Savage Garden (that guy can't sing live - he was so out of tune) both remind me of Michael Jackson. The only highlight was Jewel and I felt sad (not because of the song) watching the performance - why do they choose a singer that doesn't belong there? She didn't belong there and you could tell she knew it. FACE GLITTER.... waahhh...) haha. Have fun, dont take me seriously, thats when i get into trouble. love you all madly, as jen would say... Hey fellow EDAs! Got good news here regarding the picks for Jewel. The order is going to be placed on Tuesday. I have been working with Mike Connell, Dennis Harris and Alan Bershaw closely to come up with final plans and preparations. The picks will be light blue color, medium in size, with black lettering. One side will have Dennis Harris' angel drawing (which is on the cover of the Boston tapes) and the other side will have the saying "We are Everyday Angels". The design may be viewable on Dennis' web site soon.I know that "hands manifest thought" was something that many people wanted, but we couldn't do that for a few reasons...one..to use a quote of Jewel's we needed to get permission from Lenedra or someone from Jewel's camp, with them being so busy getting ready for her to start her tour in Europe, we didn't want to bother them with more work. And that would have taken time, we want to try our hardest to get these to Jewel by her birthday. Lenedra already has approved us using the saying "We are EveryDay Angels", so it just makes a lot less work on both ends. Besides, it will remind her of the EDAs every time she plays and it reflects the group as we are....EveryDay Angels. How this is going to work is... 1.) six of your fellow EDAs were willing to make sizable donations so that I didn't have to wait for all your money to get in and the order could be placed as soon as possible. 2.) Like I said, the order will be placed on Tuesday and it will take around four weeks before they come in. This will be cutting it VERY close to her birthday, but we are lucky enough to have an EDA in the city of her birthday show (Cologne) the week before, who we will be shipping Jewel's 120 picks to if we get them from the manufactuer in time. If we can't get them to her ON her birthday, so be it, they will be in her hands not long after the actual day. 3.) This leaves 600 picks for the EDAs. No orders are going to be taken until they come in. When they do, I will be posting the e-mail address' of seven distributors already chosen, of which you can choose who to order from. Also, details on how to order will be in the post. They are going to be 2 for one dollar and a 32 cent postage stamp. At this price, we will break even having paid for Jewel's picks. Thanks to everyone who helped out in making this possible! Hope I answered all of your questions! Thank you. i must respectfully disagree with Tanner's post. i think we should be encouraged to offer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism of Jewel's performances. if she does a bad job or writes a crappy song, we should state our feelings. just because we are EDAs does not mean that we should slavishly offer praise for everything she does. we should not abandon our own senses of what is praiseworthy. i have seen and heard bad performances by Jewel. she is not perfect. i think she would appreciate CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. no one famous should want to be insulated from reality. if i was in Jewel's position i'd appreciate criticism beacause it can be used to improve one's skills. i agree that Jewel has worked hard for her success, but i really can't agree that she has had a "hard life." i am quite sure that many people on this list have had a rougher life than Jewel. i'd trade my life for hers anyday :) peace, dave *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Dave DiCicco peaches@dmapub.dma.org "Innocence Maintained" is a moderated, news only email list providing its subscribers with timely information about Jewel Kilcher. Hi Angels, I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but Jewel was on a little commercial promo type thingy for Rick Dee's top 40. She was talking and what really suprised me was she was saying the speaking part of "The Poem Song". (I love that song!!!) I was in the car and I got all excited and was like "Hey, it's Jewel!", then I was saying "How'd they get that?!". I'm usually either sleeping or not home on a Sunday morning, so I was excited to hear her during the 30 seconds I was listening to the radio. Oh well, that's it. Thanks for reading. Bye! Greg "The Revenge Angel" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Apr 1997 17:52:47 -0400 (EDT) From: the emperor of smurfs Subject: Jewel mention in Dar Williams interview hi angels! about a week back i rec'd a copy of an interview with Dar Williams. This interview originally appeared on February 7, 1997 in the Anchorage Daily News in the "8" supplement on page 7. i wasn't going to mention this interview because the interviewer attempts to pit Dar against Jewel and this really puts Dar in an uncomfortable position. but i decided to mention this in light of the Alan Bershaw's post that Rolling Stone is planning on doing a "hatchet job" on Lenedra, Atz & Jewel. the portion of the Dar interview reproduced below is another example of really bad journalism and it is unfair to both Dar and Jewel. [snip] Q: You write songs that are almost like short stories. I suppose you have to, given the complexity of the emotion and the issues you sing about. dar: Something that I've discovered is that one of the safe directions for a life to take is the so-called "Noah's Ark Approach," where you find your mate and you march two-by-two and it's a stable thing. Looking for that one person is a pursuit we can really sell our selves on. The thing the short story solves is that a love story is one among many. The stories I find more interesting are the ones where people discover something about his- or herself or about work. They discover conflict is not about love; it is about self or friendship. That's the story I like to write. Q: So you're sort of like Jewel with a brain? dar: That is funny...[edited in original which leads me to believe that Dar's statements below are probably somewhat out of context -- dave] It makes me think about the way I think the marketing works with music. Obviously, that would be to get a performer as young as possible because they worship youth, and that person is vulnerable and more likely to sign contracts. You've got to say no to them before they say no to you. I see the system as working against Jewel. If Jewel is able to navigate her way out of it ... [edited in original] she'll be able to succeed. Because she grew up in Alaska, not L.A., she probably has some identity outside the industry. And because feminism has progressed further, she can figure out the traps. Like someone is always going to tell her she is fat, even if she's anorexic... [edited in original] But there's a lot working in Jewel's favor. And Jewel's talent is working in Jewel's favor. Q: Jewel's in her early 20s. You didn't get started as a serious performer until you were 26. Why then? dar: I was interested in theater until I was 23. I started going to open-mikes when i was 22 or 23. It took until I was 26 to really get my stuff out there because I was working with a grassroots network of people to hear and record my music. Q: You've got a serious following on the Web. People spend a lot of time interpreting you and your concerts. It's almost like the hard-core discussion fans would have about Bruce Springsteen in his early days, except most of it is electronic. Is that a planned marketing approach? dar: It just sort of happened, which is great. I have great managers, and their big motto is they want to build the indestructible career. That means don't talk up to people, don't talk down to people. They're very respectful to the people who listen to my music and the people who get my music out into the world. The listeners are a part of the real equation of having a career in music. I don't read the "Dar list" because it would drive me crazy. Then it would become a phenom as tempting as the industry world. I'd be tied to what I've already done and be scared of experimenting. [snip] i think that Dar comes off quite gracious in response to the interviewer's brutally unfair move of trying to pit Dar against Jewel. since Dar's response are edited, i can't help but think we are losing some of the context :( i decided to include the portion about Dar's response to her internet popularity cos i thought it was just plain neat. also, i think the same thing would apply to Jewel or any other performer who would have to suffer through the overanalizations and interpretations of us fans. :) as always, feedback is welcome and appreciated! peace, dave *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Dave DiCicco peaches@dmapub.dma.org on your way up, understand i wish i'd put so much more in your hand the better part of this heart's bitter land i swear there is more here than sand --- peter mulvey *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #285 ***************************
