This will be an intimate living room concert with probably under 20 people. If you wan't to hear Cindy Lee go to www.cdnow.com and search for her name then click on the sound icon. And if you wondering who they are just e-mail me for info. Any questions just e-mail me or call me at 617-288-4381. Please no prank calls. This should be one of the 5 most talked about events in EDA folklore for years to come. Hope to have alot of you here tomorrow. Also anyone who brings a Maxell XLII will get an EDA cover tape. Talk to you soon. Chris Snyder. Here is a repost of Larry's original letter and a review of Cindy Lee's show. Hey all Boston-area EDAs!! I just got a call *from the road* from Elizabeth Hummel: The Cindy Lee Berryhill/EH performance this weekend in Albany was scrubbed, and these angels are remaining in the Boston area for some part of the weekend. As a treat for the EDAs, they asked me to convey to y'all that they would like to have an "open house" performance to which all EDAs are invited, probably some time Friday night. I don't have the details yet, but I will post them by tomorrow night. Much of the thanks for this should go to Dan, Tim, Mia and Liz; they were quite taken with all of you in Toledo and are rapidly becoming "Jewel Fan fans" themselves! You will have a wonderful time; it's a great event for an EDA gathering, and even though it's probably going to be free, I hope one of you will "pass the hat" for these troubadours, so that more things like this can continue to happen. I wish I could be there; send my love!! Dennis, Alan, Tegan, Jennifer, Chris, Phil and anyone within the zone, do yourselves a B-I-G favor and please make every effort to get there; you will not be sorry!! - -=-Larry-=- REVIEW Dan Stark's review By now it was almost 11, the last high school band was wrapping up, and kids were evacuating behind them (it was all-ages). Not only did we manage to get our original 'table' back, (a post surrounded by stools really), but I was delighted to see the remains of my sub were still on that table. Cindy took the stage within a few minutes, and played about a 50-minute set. The best part about Cindy's show is the 'instruments' she uses...I sense some Rugburns influence in the cheeze factor of it all. First she has a mono, $5 ghetto-blaster she uses to play samples on some songs. There is also a toy piano, and a Casio keyboard that a friend gave her for the tour. The Casio also has a bonus bad drum machine effect built-in, which Cindy used on one song. And she also played both acoustic and electric guitar. Elizabeth joined in for backing vocals on a few songs...it was all very entertaining and often extremely funny. Despite the fact no one seemed to pay much attention to the performance at the bar, they came out of the woodwork afterwards to buy a whack of CDs from both Cindy and Elizabeth. Soon the next band took the stage, and the 6 of us (EDAs, Cindy and Elizabeth) exited the bar before the end of the second chord (I think there were only two anyway so I'm sure we didn't miss much). Apparently Cindy and Elizabeth were anxious to get started on their drive to Boston right away, so we bid them, and each other farewell. Burkeman's review Dan goes and gets Mia, and imagine the setting: Cindy Lee Berryhill, Elizabeth Hummel with guitar in hand, and us four in a corner of a coffee shop with a noisy sound system competing with our hearing. Dan is granted permission for a recording (heh heh we wonder what it will sound like) and sets up in front of Elizabeth. In any case, Elizabeth played a number of songs, both requests and new songs, with beautiful harmony by Cindy Lee. Meanwhile, the performance is going basically unnoticed by the rest of the people in the shop. Cindy also takes her turn with a song she isn't going to play tonight. Basically, we sit and spend time before Cindy Lee is supposed to go on stage. We chat about a number of things, including Elizabeth's song "The Goodwill Store" (written after she saw Jewel & Steve sing Silver Lining) the songwriting method, and learning to play piano. It was really a great time, I served the ladies drinks (the cost of getting a private concert) and we eventually ended up back at the Grog Shop with Cindy Lee on stage. Cindy Lee Berryhill is a fantastic live performer. BOSTON & NEW YORK EDAs TAKE NOTE! Go see them play, it will be worth your while. Elizabeth sings harmony on some of the songs, fabulous. Many CDs are sold afterward, including copies of Elizabeth's CD (I had previously obtained mine through other sources) which is also highly recommended by many including myself. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 15:50:57 -0500 From: BeefJerky Subject: Re: NJC: Cab Calloway's Gin Yes, it does. There is nothing more EDA-like than giving a part of yourself. But there's no reason to stop there. Blood is not the only thing in short supply. Organs (i.e., kidney, liver, lungs, etc..) are needed every second. There are people who are living their daily lives connected to some huge machine desperately waiting for an organ donor. At first I thought it was silly. I didn't want to be buried with some organs missing(I know it sounds stupid, but hey at least I came to the realization). Then my best friend's father had a kidney failure. I saw him wither away before my eyes, connected to a machine and waiting for a kidney. Lucky for him, he eventually received one and now he is back to health doing stuff like running, biking, stuff that you and I may take for granted. And the only reason that his recovery was possible was because someone had made a decision to donate an organ and save the life of someone he/she didn't know. Since then I am a registered organ donor. Just something to think about. I just wanted to tell you all about this INCREDIBLE dream I had last night. Jewel was in it. The sky was this beautiful shade of blue that can hardly be described. It was that perfect shade of blue you think of when you close your eyes and envision that most beautiful sunny day. Everything was alive, the sun was shining, and the day was absolutely glorious. It was definitely a perfect day for an outside cncert. There was an outdoors wooden stage that was perfectly polished with nothing but one microphone standing in the middle of the front. Jewel was standing near the microphone, and I was standing very close to her. We were talking in low voices, just between the two of us, and we were flipping through various sheets of paper. I had my ever-present journal in my hand, and as I opened the pages some of the loose pieces of paper I had shoved inside my journal fell to the stage floor. Jewel and I laughed as I bent over topick up the paper. Then I caught a quick glimpse out towards the audience. Tons of people were sitting on the beautiful green ground, some were sitting under willow trees, others out in the sun. There was such jubilation and celebration as everyone picnicked and laughed together. Although I did not know any names, I knew in my soul that every person in the audience was an EDA. Jewel smiled at me, gave me a quick hug, and I knew it was time. She yodeled to let the audience know their show was about to begin, and everyone's attention was drawn to this simple spectacle of two women standing in the middle of the stage. SHe spoke first. She introduced me and tried to say my last name. It was funny...I had to help her out. Then she laughed and said she was going to write a song one of these days about my last name. It was so cute. Then she tweaked my nose and encouraged me to read. As the day went on, Jewel and I took turns reading. We read our own poetry, we read each other's poetry, and, together, we read the poetry of Anne Sexton, Sharon Olds, Kimiko Hahn, Maggie Estep, and Jessica Hagedorn. It was so cool. Then I woke up. It was early...8 AM...and I hated waking up (I am not a morning person at all...i growl at morning people...), but I was able to go to my class...didn't think of skipping. That dream was so cool. I only wish that one day I would be cool enough to, first of all, get to go to a Jewel concert (I am so broke...and she does not come out to Lancaster PA... =~( ), and then meet her, and it is such an ultimate DREAM to be able to read with her. Oh my GOd I think that day would be one of the happiest days of my whole life. *Sigh* It was only a dream tho... love you all thanks for reading, angels stephanie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 11:38:17 +0000 From: "Ken Walden" Subject: NJC: Newburyport Residents Hey angels- Just a note to anyone that might happen to live in the Newburyport, MA area. This is just a reposting of my note from last week outlining procedures for Canadian EDA's who want to order the Jewel Tour poetry booklets. If you've already e-mailed me on this, you needn't pay attention. Thanks. Gerry, a northern angel - --------------------------------------------------------------- THIS MESSAGE IS FOR CANADIAN EDA'S Hi everyone, Sorry this post is little on the longish side, but it's not complex. Really. Here's the deal for Canadian EDA's on acquiring copies of the Jewel tour poetry booklets. First, to prove you're Canadian, you have to answer the following skill-testing question: What was Don Cherry's dog's name? Just kidding.... This will work quite similarly to Mr. BB's excellently conceived process. To reiterate, we're talking about Jewel's "Tiny Lights Tour '97" booklets that were sold during Jewel's recent tour. These booklets contain poetry, writing, vintage & recent photos as well as info about the tour itself. Here's the instructions. Please follow them EXACTLY in order for this to be as easy as possible for us. As Alan pointed out, the cost of the booklets are $10 in American dollars. (same as at the shows). This translates into $14 Canadian. To speed up the procedure, please send me (NOT the list) an e-mail as soon as possible to indicate how many booklets you would like. Please put "Canadian tour books" as the subject. Then send me a standard size manilla envelope (9.5" x 13") that is self addressed & with at least 90 cents in stamps already on it. (Note: DO NOT use postal meter postage! Only stamps.) Add an extra 90 cent stamp for each extra booklet ordered up to 5 booklets. Include $14 in Canadian funds in a cheque or money order for each booklet ordered. *****Make the cheque or money order out to me - Gerry Lipnowski***** NOT to Jewel. NOT to Alan. And certainly under no circumstances to a Harris brother....;-) I will simply put however many booklets you paid for in the envelope & send it back to you. It's that easy. Also, please note that I will be out town for the first two weeks of May. So, please put your envelope in the mail by April 21, or if you can't do it by then, wait until May 14. I'll repost this a few times next week, and we'll start again in May. Send your self adressed pre-postaged 9.5" x 13" manilla envelope, with a $14 cheque or money order for each booklet ordered to: Gerry Lipnowski 3951 Lacombe Montreal, Quebec H3T 1M7 MONTREAL EDA'S PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING; If you want to save yourself the mailing procedure and just meet somewhere for this transaction, send me an e-mail and we can probably do that. I know where most of you live anyway..... Everyone, please read the following reminder from Alan: - ------------------------------------------------------------- "These booklets are in limited quantities & will not be printed again. I'll keep the list posted if it looks like they'll sell out to prevent having to return any requests. Remember, Amyjo & I volunteered to do this "totally non-profit" because so many EDAs requested it. Follow the simple instructions. I know this will be painless if you do. :-) If this can be done without a lot of problems, We've agreed to set up a similar thing with the leftover tour t-shirts. Lets see how it goes." - ---------------------------------------------------------------- Right on Mr. BB......Ditto from me. On a personal note, I just want to point out that I bought one of the booklets at the Burlington VT show, and I genuinely like it a lot. And, as a last thought from me, I think we in Canada should distinguish ourselves from our American compatriots and refer to ourselves from now on as the ED eh's? What do you think, eh? :-) Take care, Gerry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Apr 1997 11:45:28 -0700 From: howenow@imagen.net (Adrian Duplessis) Subject: Your Sister Jewel/Studies in Love... room for all URLs In case my last post wasn't clear, the sneak preview @ is for EDAs and is only about one-quarter of an entire article called "Your Sister Jewel/Studies in Love # Blah blah blah". Because it's so big, the on-line 'zine editor thought it best to publish it in two parts -- what you can see now on my web-page is sort-of the opening act (and is around 3000 words in length). The next part, which is more about Jewel's lyrics and talents and concerts is about 9000 words long. And Jewel's name appears many, many times -- so there's lots of room for anyone with a Jewel page that wants to be linked to her name in the article to let me know. (And I expect there'll be future room left to add in Jewel pages that haven't yet been created.) As I said in my last post, I've tried to bookmark all Jewel web-pages I can find so that they can be entered and appear as links in the complete article. But, in case I miss anyone -- you can let me know the URL of your Jewel page(s). I've managed to put a number of the Jewel sites in as links in the first act -- but if your page doesn't appear in the first act, it'll definitely go in the second act. And once it's all done, the whole feature will remain on the magazine site (which should look a lot cooler than does my own basic page...) for the world to see. BTW, the SODA site @ published a really good Jewel interview in its first edition (December '96) -- you can find it in the SODA archives. I can also do almost anything from tv (I know off a good shot in the Leno performance that I could do). The thing is it would take me longer than the time we have (especially a picture of Jewel because I would have to make it perfect or I would hate myself - I'm very critical of my work - my teacher sure isn't though - getting 98 for every quarter is getting boring). Maybe I can do this next year or for another special date.
