It takes a theory about reality forms some conclusions based on the theory, these conclusions are subjected to "critical tests". The results of the tests either disprove the theory or lend credence to it (not prove; slight detour, all crows are black, if I see a red crow, that disproves the "theory", if I only see black crows that does not "prove' the theory since I only see some crows, not all of them and even _if_ I see all of them then I still can't see all past or all future crows). Much of scientific method started with Plato in a formal sense and much more started with simple common sense millions of years before that. e.g. noticing that fire burns. Scientific method really only works well when there's a very high degree of objectivity and when researchers are fully committed to critically testing their models. All too human people aren't always fully objective. SM just tests things. Most paranormal research is ignored by "serious" scientists because too many huckesters and confidence men have tried to put one over on people. The Church, specifically the Roman Catholic Church was very, very much against science and scientific method. Galileo got in a nice bit of hot water for suggesting that things of the same weight fell at the same rate. Whereas at the time it was accepted that angels appeared to people, that healing through prayer worked and other sort of 'paranormal' beliefs. > "Science" was created by the Christian church to help > in its endeavor rid the world of evil. No to the first bit and a bit whole hearted yes to the second. Science wasn't invented over night, certainly science especially engineering, metalurgy, and a host of others pre-date Christianity by at least 5,000 years. The Christian Church has never really been a friend of science... ...they still aren't and I can point you to a number of sources where Christians are trying to subvert and out right ban science. Still, as a Wiccan the second part, that which was not explained by the Church was evil and hey many people burned for it or were excommunicated, held in prison, tortured. All for a belief in Science. > =( Western, (dare I say, Christian?), civilization is > the about the only culture that brands the paranormal > as evil, or worse, impossible. Most cultures revere Hmmm, devils in Chinese literature, the Wendigo in Ojibwa stories, ... on the other side, healing springs, the intercession of saints, oh, some good old loaves and fishes (mmmm fishes ...sushi)... Human kind of all sorts has feared the unknown. We've often made up tales to explain things we couldn't understand. This goes with out bounds through culture, race, system of belive and era. Science when used properly is good. The Church has done good and bad. Paranormal proponents have also done much good and bad. You have a lovely sentiment, but it sorta falls apart in the actual history of things. I think all you've really succeeded in convincing me of is that mean people suck, what ever their tools are. It's in reference to what Igor mentioned in his post about Jewel playing at the San Dieguito High School in San Diego. Sorry Igor, but I DID make it there!!! Since few accounts of Jewel's behind-the-scenes, angel-benefit activities ever make it to the main limelight, I feel this carries extra importance. Jewel and Lenedra chose to help out this organization called the Jenna Druck Foundation. From what I gathered, it's about families helping families who have lost a child (Lenedra said she connected with this since she herself lost a son), also the foundation provides leadership counseling, seminars and conferences for teenage girls...teaching them that they can be strong women pursuing their dreams, without having to become tough and conform to the "male-oriented business world". So, here's the rundown of what happened... My karate instructor is friends with one of the Jenna Druck foundation organizers. He was asked to help provide security for Jewel at the high school. God knows if the whole school found out there'd be a HUGE mess! Well, knowing that I and another friend (also one of his students) are Jewel-philes, he called us up & asked for assistance. WooHoo! We arrived at the school about 20min before Jewel was due, and like any good security person, we scanned the campus for potential hazards (ie. stacks of frisbees laying around, crazed boys with glassy eyes, etc). After finding none, we proceeded to wait her arrival at the front of the school. About 15min later, up drive Jewel & Lenedra! She's totally casual as she hops out of the car and grabs her guitar (she wouldn't let anyone help her...'Nedra said she's like that!). The sun was blazing, the birds were singing and I still couldn't believe that I was escorting Jewel! We walked past all these classroom buildings almost completely unnoticed, then arrived at the small (~80people) auditorium. Lenedra, Jewel, my friend Paul and I just had to stand right inside the door since no seats were available. They were all filled with high school girls listening to the first guest speak about the upcoming girls' leadership conference. Cameras were everywhere though...makes me wonder if some of the girls didn't wonder why! Finally Jewel was announced, came out in front of the group and pulled out the small acoustic guitar she'd been carrying. Lenedra remained standing over by us. After having several clip-on mikes were stuck on her tanktop, she began a beautiful story about her life, how she has followed her dreams & passions, not succumbing to the pressures from her dad (to go to college) and from society in general (to "get a good job" and keep your passions as hobbies). I know this may sound familiar to what she often says in public interviews ("hands manifest..." did get quoted!), but she talked in MUCH more detail than i've ever heard before. Both she and Lenedra spoke about their mother/daughter relationship among many other topics relating to young people (girls especially, due to the crowd). I must simply say it was FANTASTIC!!! She did play one song (only. :( ) to the crowd, I'm Sensitive. After the talk, we escorted her to another room where the press interviewed her for 15min. Basic semi-intelligent, mostly stupid questions. The most moving moment of the day came when one of the teachers brought in a girl to meet Jewel (till then it was just us, Jewel, Lenedra and the press). She had wanted to thank Jewel for such a moving/motivating talk to the girls. Between her sobs, she said that Jewel had renewed her interest and desire to pursue singing and song-writing as more than just a simple hobby. She said everyone had told her to give it up and finish school, get a "good job" and basically do what she didn't want to do. It was an extremely emotional moment and even i got misty-eyed! Funny too, but the camera crew zoomed in on this moment and I just happened to be standing behind the girl... turns out my face got on the nightly news. I didn't see it, but a friend did and said I had a "shit-eating grin" all over my face. After the press thing ended, we accompanied Jewel & Lenedra to a grassy spot out in the sun where further questions were asked and taping occurred...it'll be shown at the girls' leadership conference coming up in May. Jewel took a couple minutes for signing...the girls even asked Lenedra for her autograph, saying that she's such a great mom, but probably doesn't get asked to sign very often. cute. My friend & I then asked for a pic. w/her, to which she obliged, graciously. They were preparing to leave when I snuck off to the bathroom...I came back only to find Jewel sitting on the grass behind their car singing Quiet Warrior to her mom, and a couple other people! That was a treat...sitting in the sun, listening to an angel sing. :) After she finished & packed up, I asked Jewel if I could post this on the list, saying that not much of her "off-camera" charity involvement gets relayed here. She gave a most happy "yes" and mentioned that these kinds of "events" are what mean the most to her. Didn't have a chance to talk with her really. I didn't feel it was my place to start a conversation, besides, she said she was rushing off to go surfing (my kinda girl!), before having to leave for Europe today (or was it tomorrow?). I thanked Lenedra for all that she & Jewel are doing, told her I was an EDA (her demeanor immediately softened) and we hugged goodbye. I realize this has gotten super LONG, but feel this sort of "giving back" involvement of Jewel in the communities deserves high kudos and recognition. It shows what an angel she really is and how she, through living her passion, is helping empower others to do the same. Peace, - -Erik P.S. Alan, I don't know what Lenedra has come up with regarding Jewel's birthday, but if a charity contribution is done, might we consider the Jenna Druck foundation? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 1997 15:41:27 -0400 (EDT) From: Albert Sze-Wei Wang Subject: Re: NJC: Scientific Method I think the operative phrase here is: Only he/she who sees the invisible can do the impossible. Just because something can't be proven or hasn't been discovered now doesn't mean it can never be. And just because a phenomena seeems to exists now that we can't quite explain doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Science has a bad habit of ignoring evidence if it doesn't conform to widely accepted theory. This is a practice that happens on a daily basis in all fields of science. Science also has a knack for becoming a religion in the sense that it assumes that everything is explainable and if it can't be then it must not be real. Ironically, there's not basis for that assumption at all- but it's easier to deal with. I'm not saying I believe in Ouiji Boards and I"m not at all going to take a position on that debate- since I really don't know one way or the other if it's real or not- on some level I really don't care. ^_^; But my point is that arguing about this is like arguing about religion- you're not going to be changing anyone's mind. You either believe that there are things that exist beyond the level of modern science to explain or you don't. It's these little mysteries in life that to me makes life so fascinating and wonderful. :) What a boring world we'd live in if we had an explanation for everything and if nothing was worth studying or a mystery worth solving. Today I got this response back: Subj: jewel Date: 97-04-16 16:44:50 EDT From: Vh1mkb To: Tlcathome Ok, so I missed one....thank you for the information it is greatly appriciated! I added "pieces" and your page to our list of jewel web sights. Thanks again VH1MKB Yeah!!! Now I'm feeling proud ;-) Love you all :-) Tammy :-) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 1997 02:50:40 -0400 (EDT) From: Aleadawehi@aol.com Subject: Oh yeah? I can top that... There has been a lot of talk of death on this list recently, right down to the intimate details. This has caused me to ponder my own experiences with death. For instance, both of my grandfathers passed away before I was even born. Hence, I never knew either of them. Even more tragic is the plight of my grandfather Harris, who died a scant eight days before my birth. Without getting into details, the most painful part of this for him was wanting a grandchild so badly, and being denied seeing his first. Even worse, he knew he would never lay eyes on his grandchild, as he knew the exact date AND time of his death. This was the final crushing blow to his spirit. To this day, the Harris family still curses the judge who spilled the beans. Thanks for caring angels, Dennis Harris :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 22:47:23 -0400 From: "Dilts" Subject: Re: EDA picks....again.... I really like this idea.... I am all for the idea of EDA guitar picks. I'd love to have some. Really any size, color etc., but as far as the birthday gift for Jewel, I agree with Terrence, the whole point is to get the logo on the pick. I'm not sure who does it but it CAN be done. With so many EDA's, I'm sure lots of us wouldn't mind chipping in. Just remember, Jewel goes through A LOT of guitar picks! Thank You Tessa for the great idea. At last one of these venues in the Uk has heard of Jewel and has tickets to sell! Well, I've bought mine now, for the venue at The Garage, N1 (upstairs , so it'll be nice and cosy)- and the tickets were only 6.00 pounds, what a bargain. So, I now have a permanent grin on my face, my day is complete. If there are any other EDAs going to this gig let me know, maybe we can meet up. However, I should point out that the date for this venue is different from that posted to the list. It is in fact May 2nd, not May 1st. cya - -- Aaron Cooper Out There, somewhere .. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 1997 06:29:04 PDT From: "thomas phillips" Subject: wanting to be an everyday angel Everyday Angels, I am Thomas Phillips, a very big jewel fan.
