This happened a few months ago, in February, I believe. It still remains vivid in my mind, and often surfaces when I think of angels. Each of you is free to interpret it as you may. My life policy is to not investigate miracles too thoroughly, to realize and appreciate them for what they are. This may not be a miracle, but it definitely impacted my life and made me wonder.... =) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 01:31:26 -0400 From: Crunch Subject: NJC: The Swan Angel (part I) =) A few months ago, I left work late, around midnight. The temperature had dropped, and so, being in the mountains, the fog had settled in quickly. It drifted lazily, close to the ground in thick clouds that made sight more than a few feet all but impossible. =) I jumped in my truck, worried not in the least. My road home wound up across the peak of the small mountain and down through the woods and meadows on the other side. I drove it every evening. I was used to fog. As I set out up this side of the peak, I was fascinated by the soup-like density and liquidy patterns of the fog, but undaunted in my hurry to get home. Cresting the peak, I quickly began the winding drive down through the woods, though I could barely see five feet in front of the windshield. It was careless and exhilarating! =) Rounding a sharp bend in the road, I was startled. Not only was there clear patch in the fog, but in that space was a very large white bird. The bird, a Tundra Swan, was facing me with wings fully extended flapping them majestically, not as if to take off, but to warn me slow down. The swan's wingspan must have been six feet as it hovered on the road, unafraid. I stood on my brakes, coming to a stop just a few yards from this majestic animal. It stood up high on its legs, peering into the cab of my pick-up. Admist the swirling fog around us, the bird seemed surreal, its brilliant white feathers reflecting my head- lights, its wings slowly fanning the air. It seemed to glow and shimmer, stopping my breath for a moment. I wondered, just for a minute, if this was a dream. =) Apparently satisfied with something, the swan settled. Drawing his wings in, he sat back on the road and turned slightly, as if to let me pass. Catching my breath, I slowly drove around the magnificent creature. It watched me carefully, turning just its head. Its eyes twinkled in the eerie light of the night. As I passed, my last glimpse of the bird seemed to reveal a smile as it bowed its head. Driving away, I looked to the review mirror, and mysteriously, due to the fog or the lack of light, the swan was gone. =) (continued...) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 01:32:26 -0400 From: Crunch Subject: NJC: The Swan Angel (part II) =) I continued on my drive. In awe of what I had just exper- ienced, but basking in the warm feeling that it was something rare and special. My speed picked up again, though I watched the road much more carefully, horrified at the thought of running into another beautiful creature, and not geting stopped in time. =) My path leads off the mountain and across the countryside towards the town I live in. In one particular place, the road crests a series of small but steep hills in rapid sucession. The manner in which this occurs makes it difficult and sometimes impossible to guess the whereabouts of oncoming vehicles. During the day, it is entertaining to accelerate over the hills and try to get airborne. This makes for some hair-raising experiences when cresting a hill to find another approaching vehicle twenty feet away and not quite on its side of the narrow country road. At night, let alone in fog, this danger is greatly increased, even at reduced speeds. =) On an ordinary evening, I would gladly take the risk, confident and exhilarated in my driving skills. The fog would generally increase that fun. Tonight, I was driving a little more tranquily, still musing the appearance of the swan. As I approached the most peaked of the rises, I caught the shine of oncoming headlights on what appeared to be my side of the road. I braked quickly again, sliding to a stop. The headlights seemed to be about fifteen feet in front me, stationary, directed not at me but into the field to my right. I cautiously got out of my truck and made my way through the fog to the vehicle. The driver was getting out of his car. Dazed and frazzled, he leaned against his car as I walked to him quickly. =) This driver had crested the rise just minutes before. His front wheels had left the ground for an instant. When they grounded again, he said that he couldn't see anything through the fog. He crossed the middle line and slammed into the bank on the opposite side of the road, my side. Though startled and and sore, he was uninjured. I drove to a nearby farmhouse to call his wife, a tow truck, and the police. Returning to the wrecked vehichle, I talked with the man about the road, and near accidents we had had on that particular hill. His eyes opened wide and he gasped, "We both are really lucky you weren't couple minutes earlier!" =) For a moment, I was speechless. Slowly, I related to this man about the magical swan that had slowed me down that night. As I spoke, I realized that had I not encountered the creature, I would have been approaching the hill a few minutes earlier. I would have been in serious danger of striking the out- of-control car head on. The man did not miss this and pointed it out immedi- ately, stunning me by hearing the words. The man, a minister, asked if I believed in angels, and if I was a christian. And though I am not a christian, I let him know that I do indeed believe in angels. His words were, "You and I were both watched over by angel this evening, one which you were blessed to actually see!" =) His wife soon arrived, followed by a patrol car and wrecker. After bidding the man farewell, I climbed carefully into my truck and made my way slowly home, wondering. As I climbed into the safety of my bed, I mused that to question what what had happened that evening, would be not to believe. And I do believe that I angels do exist. =) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 01:33:06 -0400 From: Crunch Subject: NJC: The Swan Angel (epilogue) =) A few days later, I overheard some co-workers talking about 'The Swans'. It seems that every year, a specific flock of Tundra Swans stop on their way north at a small nearby lake for just a few days. Apparently, the arrival of the swans is of particular interest to the local com- munity. It is an annual occurance that is easily missed unless one watches carefully. If I still live here next year, you can bet that I'll be watching! =) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Apr 1997 21:34:39 From: george Subject: Hard Rock Live I know this real late and I haven't posted in long while, but I just wanted to say that I can still make a copy of the Hard Rock Live tape if to anyone who still wants one. Subject: Poltz -- Let's go to the tape, Frank Hi James & all you angels! I just read James's post on the Poltz interview, and once again I think I've lost complete touch with reality. Much of what James reported was what I "think" I remember from the interview, but there are some things that came out different in my brain (not the first time this week that's happened, I can assure you). First, I thought that Steve-O said that he knew right away that Jewel had the talent to be big (I think he joked to the contrary first, though). Also, I think he said (in response to Aliaghakhan's question about how he felt he had influenced Jewel as a songwriter) that he helped her with the verse/chorus/verse/bridge/chorus type of song structure, as her songs all tended primarily to be lyrical poem-pieces. I think he attributed that to her isolation growing up and not having heard a lot of "pop" music. He also said that he thinks he showed her that she could write funny and happy songs, not just angst-ridden dirges (that's NOT a quote). There's a ton of pure gold and crystal in that interview, so I hope that everyone gets to see the tape at some point. I say we should show it at gatherings, to entice more EDAs to attend! I'll post more memories (even if they're false ones) this weekend. ttfn, - -=-Larry-=- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 97 00:15:33 +0800 From: "James Reach" Subject: Poltz Interview (NJC) Most of the Poltz interview was about the Rugburns. Steve began playing guitar early; Stinky, whose real name is Jeff Aafedt, had most of his influence in drumming from big band such as Gene Krupa. The group may be on a new label but couldn't talk about it yet. The group likes to tour. It's biggest crowds were when they were playing opening for the Ramones. They liked the sound they had in the recent tour because the drummer is closer to the lead guitarist and thus Steve can hear the beat on every song. Steve wants to do this configuration more on future performances. The group likes to record and will be doing a new album in Marin (or was it Mendocino), California. The best way to do an album is to reside in the area where they are cutting the record; you can take in the environment and be part of the project the whole way. The producer will be a team, and he mentioned the names of several potential producers (including _____ Klein who is Joni Mitchell's ex-husband.) Klein came backstage at the San Diego concert (April 4) to ask for the job. Steve also mentioned several other potential producers, but restated he wanted a team rather than one individual. Steve mentioned that either he was on now or will be on Mercury records; this is the label that this new album will be on. The band's first gig was at an airconditioning factory that Steve's father worked at. It was weird because people would be coming in and ordering parts during the concert. Steve mentioned that he had was awkward in his youth because he had a tooth growing out of the roof of his mouth and had either allergies or asthma. I forgot why he mentioned this. Steve and Stinky (Jeff) began a game they play of one-upmanship...Stinky would say, "Did you invent the flute and Steve would say, "Yes, I did, my father owned a sheet metal factory and I invented it then" and Stinky would say, "Was it supposed to blown sideways?" and Steve would say, "No, it originally was supposed to be blown like a pennywhistle, but then someone put a stop at one end so I thought of blowing it from the side," etc. This humorous dialogue went on for at least five minutes or more, and then Steve explained that they do this often, or they do other characters. One of them is "bad math guy" for example if at a gig the three in the band get paid $300.00 the "bad math guy" will say okay we got $300.00 that's $150.00 for Stinky, $75.00 for Steve, and $200.00 for John. The band will be following the same route as their recent tour again. For more information about the Rugburns write rugburnssd@aol.com Once again the above is based on my recollection, not the actual videotape. I saw them last night in Nantes (France), half knowing what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. They seemed to sound like a cross between Belly and Bettie Serveert, but with a harsher (if that's the word) sound (someone else want to back me up here?) All the songs they played (except for one) were in French (bummer, since I only know very little) and for the only English song (just the lead singer and the drummer on this one) the drummer played the guitar. Other than that, it seemed like half their songs started off the same, but probably because I hadn't heard them before :) Anyway, I saw the post this morning about Lilith Fair and it's web site and it said that Autour de Lucie was one of the touring bands. What a coincidence! Another thing, the venue last night was like any other bar/club (eg. 9:30 Club, etc.) but the closest people to the stage were 4 feet away. That was the wierdest thing. I thought people would move right up front. Is this common? Bye, Anand p.s. Is there anyone in Europe kind enough to show me around if I stop by? i.e. I'm working in Nantes until the middle of August, but want to get around on the weekends. Tim Hunter posted this the last time it happened, and it has some good info in it. Please read: - -----Forwarded message from tim@Synopsys.COM (Tim Hunter)----- First, let me assure you all that the previously posted warning about a virus in a message with the subject of "PENPAL GREETINGS" is a hoax(*). Please do not forward this "warning" to anyone else. [From an email by M. Strata Rose, Postmaster at Synopsys] Letters about new viruses on the Internet have a way of becoming chain letters, and are generally full of misinformation. Please check with your systems administrator or help line before forwarding any letters concerning viruses. Official notifications of new viruses are clearly labeled as such and include full information on the government or industry agency which has issued the alert. Please do not forward chain letters, even "for a good cause". Almost every chain letter asking for emails, postcards, etc on the behalf of someone has turned out to be either misinformation [true once, but true no longer] or an outright hoax. Chain letters are not just a pain or an amusement -- they can cause real problems. Many Internet providers will pull a person's account for forwarding chain letters; forwarding one to a friend can inadvertently get them into trouble. The huge size of the net means that chain letters can propagate geometrically and several well-known incidents of global Internet slowdowns have been traced to chain letters. Letters regarding business opportunities may be of questionable legality. I'll hop off my sysadmin soapbox now. This thread is probably almost over now anyway, but the thing is, I reckon, IMHO, that Jewel would be mortified to learn that so many EDAs thought she was so pure. She is a passionate person, therefore we can safely assume she is probably as passionate about sex as she is about so many other things. It generally works that way. If RCD is anyway supposed to represent, even in some small way, her feelings about sex and lust and so on, then she sounds pretty healthy and likes a good romp as much as the next person. Laughing about sex is just as valid as treating it like a sacred act. Again, this is just MHO. At least she can write about it with a bit of originality, as opposed to, as someone else said earlier, the songs that can only use cliches like...well, we all know them.... It's out within the next few weeks I believe, and comes with a thick photo booklet. Be very excited, it is fantastic! Ani live is like Jewel live...much different (dare I say better) than here studio sound, and the new CD captures that perfectly! that's it! ttyl Dan - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAN STARK danstark@mnsi.net Windsor, Ontario, Canada - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 12:07:00 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: Jewel Tour Books-Ordering Repost On Thu, 10 Apr 1997, Mudgirl wrote: > Being from canada i cannot reply to this. Many smaller record labels take cash via mail, it saves waiting for the check to clear (and for some banks the cost of cashing that check!)... ...usually they use a term called "well concealed cash". E.g. don't make it obvious that there's cash in the envelope. You can get envelopes with patterns inside (not just white) or wrap the cash into a little letter or piece of paper; just so that you can't see the cash if you hold it up to the light. Hi all, just a quick reminder that the official chat for AOL EDA's is tonight. Once again, the official chat time is 10:00 EST, but most of us start showing up much earlier than that and many come and go throughout the evening. For those who don't remember or are new to us, the chat is in private room Everyday Angels. If you need more info, e-mail me privately and I'll send you instructions on how to get there.... He He He... There seems to be a lot of discussion about our beloved Jewel wanting and trying to get rid of her 'pure and innocent' image she acquired god knows where... Now what _I_ this she should do if she is serious about this is to simply make a (lyrics-relevant) video for 'Fading Away"... Someone as (IMHO) incredibly beautiful as Jewel is would be a lot 'easier on the eyes' than most of the common bimbos currently in style. Now, as far as shedding the innocent image, I rather suspect that Jewel is intentionally toying with us, keeping the mystery. As has been illustrated, she gets pretty explicit in many of her songs, but then doesn't always say which position she is taking on the issues mentioned (God's Gift is pretty clear sarcasm, but many others including RCD are not as clear). A little mystery is good for sales in show biz. As far as whether Jewel is _trying_ to be sexy. At least for me, personality is the main point, and appearance is second. Since our dear Jewel has both abundantly, I don't think she could help conveying *some* sense of sexuality... OK, my .02 rubels converted to 1945 deutchmarks depreciated over time for the 1996 tax year, and taxed into the red. Actually, I use Microsoft Word 95. I know it sounds crazy, but with a template (which I can send you if you want it) you can make very nice cards. Especially if you have the Office 95 Pack for Windows, it comes with a program to rotate text for the spine of the card. Mac users, it should all work the same but I can't attest to how the latest version of Word works on Macs. - -tim 'burkeman' ______ ____ ___ / ____/ / __ \ / | Tim Burke / __/ / / / / / /| | tburke@mail.heidelberg.edu / /___ / /_/ / / ___ | /_____/ /_____/ /_/ |_| "I am a worm." -Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 15:19:13 -0400 From: mskywalker@webtv.net (Matthew Turner) Subject: Saturday Night Live Is Jewel supposed to be on SNL tonite?
