I just watched it for the first time last week and it is incredible! It stars Johnny Depp, and cameos many names. It is an independent film, it is all black and white, and it contains some of the best direction and cinematography to date! The movie is a surreal journey through the old west, studded with absolutely key dialogue and numbingly intricate detail. It is rated "R" because it is just not a film for those without insight, and it does contain some brief, though astonishing, violence. Subject: sex, rugs, and violets well, I commend Sean Hooks once again for keeping this list from being boring. :) He's a rabble-rouser, but he's got a good heart. I'm glad to see such topics addressed so openly. I believe that the angel spirit that we need to embody isn't one of black/white, sterotypically "good" beliefs. That's what most religion is for. I think we're angelic because we are open with our feelings and opinions, and try to foster a sense of happiness and wisdom among each other. I think addressing these things helps us all open up, and uncover those feelings we've all been too ashamed to share. Not that a little decorum isn't always appropriate. :) I think SEan did a great job. And, as has been stated, it takes a bit of naivete to believe that Jewel would not ever put sexual meaning into her songs. She's been writing these in her late teens and early twenties, some of the most sexually charged years of peoples' lives. That's one myth that I think she's constantly trying to dissuade: that she's some sort of sugar-sweet angel little girl. She's as horny as the rest of us. (oops, there went my decorum!). Maybe worse. And, I think she's breaking from the mainstream in the manner that she addresses sex, as a loving thing, as a possibly damaging psychological thing, etc. Unlike many pop artists, she's not writing entire songs just saying "let's get it on, baby." She can write about sex and everything else in a beautiful, frank manner, and I'm glad we all appreciate this. tim gavin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 1997 12:51:25 -0400 From: "Gianfranco Covello" Subject: Re: Testicles Racecar Drivers blah blah.... Oh and the concert w/Jewel on friday was fun, but the HUGE sport hall (RIMAC) at UCSD was much too LARGE to give the intimacy that makes hearing Jewel a transcendental treat (not to be confused with a Rice Crispies Treat!). The sOund cheCk that most of the EDA's got in to see was by far the hIghLight of the nite...she even sang one of my all-time favorites, Swedish Song. 'Course, I wasn't as fortunate as some EDA's to get front row seats or even within the first 20 rows!! How'd you guys do it? Who did you bribe?! ;) I look forward to Lilith Fair...bummer that San Diego was left off the map. I've been reading all of these wonderful posts about all the fun people have been having at EDA gatherings all over the place, and I can't stand it anymore! I have to have one, too!!! :) I haven't decided on a date yet, but I'm going home after finals (around May 10), and am getting married on June 8, so it would have to be somewhere between those dates. Also, I live in Lincoln, Maine (about 45 min. north of Bangor on I-95), and anyone is welcome, regardless of where the heck you live. It would really rock if we got a "party van", too, with all sorts of people I've been wanting to meet, but that might be a bit much to ask, cuz it would be quite a drive. I have a huge backyard (and front yard and side yard), and it's really pretty where I live (not much smog here in rural Maine :)). We also have a pool, so that could be fun too! :) Please write back to me privately if you are interested! Thanks and sorry for the length. love, Becca :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Apr 1997 19:09:43 +0100 From: Myles MacRae Subject: Cafe De Paris Hi there. Great to hear that Jewel is coming to our great country (The UK). One quick question though. Her first date here is listed as being at the Cafe De Paris in London. WHERE IS THE CAFE DE PARIS? It is not in any listing magazines or telephone directories. Any help would be appreciated. At the last LA show, I was able to get 5 new people to see Jewel live for the first time and now I keep getting asked "When is she coming back, when is she coming back." At the May 1996 show in LA I got 7 people to see Jewel for the first time. I think at least 4 will be going to the Lillith Fair show, mainly to see her again also. Here's the hole I am though... One of the guys who went for the first time is in the middle now of the infatuation stage and he kept asking me about all of Jewel's stuff but he is not computer literate so he has no idea how to be on the list himself. He said, "I need a poster, I need a poster of Jewel, can you get one, I'll pay you." I replied, "Probably." At that point the other people around me (who I've seen Jewel concerts with before) said, "He can get one, he gets all the stuff from those internet people." So I pretty much agreed. Thus the scenario. If anyone has a spare poster of any size, obviously payment for time/effort and postage will be included. Can I get some help with my friend, the infatuation stage Jewel fan? I remember there was discussion about posters recently, that's why I originally said "Probably."
